Collectors eagerly snap them up and put them on display as fast as the teams will release them. But in this case, the motor oil from Lewis Hamilton's title-winning McLaren-Mercedes MP4-24 was used to create a tribute to the driver.

The painting you see here (at right, click to view in high resolution) was commissioned by ExxonMobil from David Maculuso, who has been painting with recycled motor oil for several years. Macaluso describes the F1-spec Mobil 1 that ran through Hamilton's Mercedes V8 last year en route to the title as an ideal medium, the engine dirt suspended in the viscose giving the final work unique texture and depth. A limited run of 50 lithographic reproductions will be offered to the public, while the original will be displayed at ExxonMobil's pavilion at the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which conveniently coincides with National Oil Check Week in the UK. Details in the press release after the jump.

[Source: ExxonMobil]
Continue reading Oil Painting: Lewis Hamilton rendered in used Mobil 1

Oil Painting: Lewis Hamilton rendered in used Mobil 1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 18:29:00 EST. The company just announced that it will be selling off its gas stations for financial reasons. We suspect that the industry keeps itself shrouded in mystery to protect its profit at times, but Exxon Mobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips, to name a few, have all stated that certain nebulous factors in the supply, demand and refinery process have led to a steep drop in profitability. You know, dozens of billions instead of hundreds. To that end Exxon, for one, is shedding its stations.

Included in the sale will be the company's namesake gas stations. The retail group includes 820 self-operated stations and about 1,400 dealer managed outlets. The company wants suitors to know that this isn't desperation and that it will take at least a few years to finalize any sale. Because of the way the competition reacts to moves like this in the oil industry, we might see quite a bit of this sort of thing in the near future, as well. Hopefully this won't mean further consolidation and even higher pump prices for us motorists. Thanks for the tip, Josh!

[Source: The Street, Photo by David McNew/Getty]
Exxon Mobil exiting gas station business originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 17:31:00 EST. A big reason for what amounts to the largest profit ever in U.S. history is the $3 per gallon gasoline that ruined our love for SUVs and trucks last year. Gas prices fell towards the end of the year, but ExxonMobil had already made its money by that point.

Many lawmakers want to heavily tax ExxonMobil for being too wealthy, but the oil guys point out that they spend a lot of money finding more oil so they can keep the crude coming. As it turns out, it's more expensive to drill a mile deep in the middle of the ocean than it is to poke a straw in the Saudi Arabian desert. Yeah, they're buying back a lot of stock too, but at least they're giving us the energy we need whenever we need it, which is better than the alternative.

If your slow-ass pickup truck is making you late for work, perhaps Holden's HSV tuner division can offer a solution in the form of the Maloo R8 Ute. With 400 HP courtesy of a General Motors GenIV LS2 small-block V8, the almost-a-truck ran a two-way average of 168.66 MPH on a 0.6-mile course, in compliance with guidelines established by the Guinness Book of World Records. This beats the 154.58 MPH record previously established by the Dodge Ram SRT10. Yes, it is fair to call into question the utility of either vehicle, but we wouldn't suggest challenging either vehicle to a race.

The record was set as part of Mobil's "Drive Around Australia" promotion, where a Maloo R8 Ute was driven for 25,000 miles without an oil change to demonstrate the company's Mobil1 synthetic product.

High gasoline prices have to be good for someone, and in news that will shock few, those fortunate men and womenappear to work for Big Oil. Chevron, America's second largest oil company announced Friday that its first-quarterprofits hit four billion dollars, a dramatic 49 percent increase over last year. With a profit of $1.80/share, thatbeat the Street by two cents.

Between ExxonMobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips, America's top three oil companies raked in more than 15 billiondollars in profits this quarter.
