Mini has made it clear that it is hard at work on a successor to the automaker's bread-and-butter Cooper. Word has it we'll get our first glimpse at the next-generation Mini toward the end of next year, and when it debuts, Sonny Lim believes the machine will be smaller, more mainstream and far less gimmicky than the current creation.

Having served as the senior designer with BMW DesignWorksUSA, Lim knows a thing or two about BMW styling. His sketches show a modern three-door hatch that's still easily-identifiable as a Mini thanks to bulging fender arches pushed far to the vehicle's corners, pie-plate headlights and a traditional Mini grille.

Lim says the next-generation Cooper will be more true to the concept of the original Cooper. Measuring in at just 140.6 inches from stem to stern, the Mini Zero Concept is shorter than the current hatchback and just slightly longer than the the now deceased Mini Rocketman Concept. The clipped size means the Zero weighs in at 1,851 pounds, which should help it yield better fuel economy and performance with minimal changes to the drivetrain. Head over to Behance.net for a deeper dive.
Sonny Lim sketches the next-generation Mini originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 08:58:00 EST.
Britain is not without its automakers, even if they are all foreign-owned, but Mini certainly ranks among the most quintessentially British of them all. Parent company BMW has cashed in on this with a succession of special editions that celebrate its Anglophilia.

The latest are called the Hyde Park and Green Park editions, named after public spaces in London. The Hyde Park model comes in off-white with brown trim (which Mini calls "Hot Chocolate") on the roof, mirror caps and stripes. The Green Park edition has green trim (British Racing Green, naturally) to contrast with the same Pepper White body color.

Owners putting down their deposits for a special new Mini can opt for two body styles (hatchback and Clubman wagon) and four engines: 122-horsepower Cooper, 184hp Cooper S, 112hp diesel Cooper D and 143hp diesel Cooper SD.

The interiors have also been spruced up for the special editions, as you can see for yourself in the attached image gallery. More info can be found in the press release below the fold.
Continue reading Mini motors through London with Hyde Park and Green Park editions

Mini motors through London with Hyde Park and Green Park editions originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 10:03:00 EST.
If you want to buy a new car, you go to a car dealership. If you want to buy a ridiculously expensive and luxurious cashmere sweater in any color imaginable, you go to Harrods. At least that's the way it once was, but these days the swanky London department store has been turning its front window display into an automotive showroom.

A year and a half ago Aston Martin put its Cygnet city car on display at Harrods, a lead that Lexus followed with a showcase of luxury hybrids in the same space a month later. Fisker followed suit just a few months ago, and now Mini is doing the same with its Goodwood edition hatchback.

As you may recall, the Goodwood is a Mini hatchback that's had its interior fitted by the same craftsmen who do the cabins for Rolls-Royce. Only 1,000 units will be made, each with a whopping $52,000 price tag. The Mini Inspired by Goodwood has been on display at Harrods for a week already and will be for another, with a salesman on hand - swatches and samples at the ready - to answer questions and take orders behind the window on Brompton Road.
Continue reading Mini puts Goodwood edition on display at Harrods

Mini puts Goodwood edition on display at Harrods originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Apr 2012 08:58:00 EST.
Want a hot little hatchback? You could do a lot worse than a Mini. But as with many cars, your budget will determine how much speed you get: Cooper, Cooper S, JCW or - with the first-gen model, anyway - the top-of-the-line John Cooper Works GP.

Introduced just before Mini launched the second-generation model line, the GP edition packed more power, less weight and a sportier suspension. After receiving reports a few months ago that Mini was planning a similar version of the current model, we brought you spy shots a few weeks ago of a prototype hatchback wearing some tell-tale signs of GP-ification. But what is this? A GP coupe?

That's what it would seem, with the less versatile and more backwards-hat-wearing Mini Coupe wearing a minimally camouflaged lower fascias front and rear, plus four-spoke wheels like the first GP edition.

The question is whether Mini is planning GP versions of both the hatchback and coupe, or if one of these prototypes is merely a diversion of some sort. We'll have to wait to find out, but you can take a closer look at the spy shots and start to wonder as well.
Mini preparing JCW GP version of Cooper Coupe too? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 18:28:00 EST.
It looks as if the rumors swirling around the supposed resurrection of the limited-edition Mini Cooper John Cooper Works GP have some substance. Our spy photographers caught this creation out and about for a little testing just a short hop away from the Nürburgring recently. From the looks of things, this could be our first glimpse at a new version of the JCW GP. New aero work, including a new front splitter and more aggressive rear spoiler, help set the model apart from its more pedestrian siblings. It looks as if the vehicle will also boast a set of revised rockers with what functional air inlets for cooling off the rear brakes.

With unique four-spoke wheels that pay homage to the first GP and a lower ride height, the hatch looks downright sinister. Early reports have hinted that the hot hatch may boast somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 horsepower with less weight to boot. Like its sought-after 2006 predecessor, odds are there's a big stiffening brace where the rear seats used to reside, too.
Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works GP spotted testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 11:29:00 EST. With only one model and a gallon of gas selling for an average of $1.25, there were plenty of critics who said the Mini brand didn't stand a chance in the States.

"Mini launched in the U.S. during the time when gas was cheap and large trucks and SUVs ruled the road," said Jim McDowell, Vice President of Mini USA in a statement. "Many thought the brand would be a one-hit wonder, and we are extremely proud that we were able to surprise some the toughest critics, and at times, even ourselves."

Now, ten years later, Mini has six models, gas prices have more than tripled and "small car" doesn't necessarily mean "cheap car." It's safe to say those naysayers in 2002 made a big mistake about the premium small car from BMW.

So, happy birthday, Mini USA, and congrats on convincing an SUV-loving American public that bigger is not always better.
Continue reading Happy 10 year anniversary, Mini

Happy 10 year anniversary, Mini originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 09:30:00 EST.
When we first drove the Mini Roadster barely a month ago, we couldn't help but feel that it had, essentially, usurped the place that had until now been taken by the Mini Convertible. The Roadster is, after all, sleeker, more stylish, that much more fun and - for some reason - even a little cheaper ($600 lower MSRP) than the four-seat cabriolet. But does that leave the Convertible without a place in the brand's ever-expanding lineup?

Since both are based on more than just the same platform, the specs are just about identical. That is, except when it comes down to interior space. While the Convertible has a pair of seats in the back - however small, still good for taking the kids for a spin or tossing an extra duffel - the Roadster has none. The Roadster, however, makes up for that with a relatively usable trunk where the Convertible has practically none. The Roadster also weighs 66 pounds less, and has more headroom (up front, of course), though front elbow room takes a three-inch hit.

So with a fresh crop of images released by Mini showing its two droptops side by side, our question is which, if any, you'd choose if you were in the market for a little retro convertible. Cast your vote in the poll below.

Think there are a lot of Mini variants already? Hold on to your hats, because BMW is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. Next month the new Mini Roadster will hit American showrooms, and next year, a two-door crossover (presaged by the Paceman concept from Detroit last year but carrying the Countryman Coupe in production form) should be available as well. But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

With the third-generation Mini Cooper hatchback set to arrive in 2014, the Anglo-German automaker will soon begin the whole process anew. And when all's said and done by the end of the decade, the Mini range will have - according to reports - grown by another three bodystyles for a total of 10.

The current lineup includes six bodystyles: the standard Cooper hatchback, the Mini Convertible, the Coupe, the Roadster, the Clubman wagon and the Countryman crossover. Throw the Countryman Coupe into the mix and you've got seven. What Mini will come up with next for three additional versions remains to be seen - we wouldn't be surprised to see a minivan, a slant-back crossover or maybe a convertible crossover (like the Beachcomber concept pictured above) - but if anyone can milk the bodystyle cow for all it's worth, we're confident its initials are B-M-W.
Mini to expand lineup to ten with three new versions by decade's end originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 11:01:00 EST.
The relentlessly unconventional Mini Cooper looks to be going a lot less unconventional for its third generation, at least on the inside. A glimpse of what appears to be Mini's future was snapped by KGP Photography in the Arctic Circle, and outside, there looks to be little change except for slightly larger dimensions. Inside, though, the giant-speedo-and-toggle-switch IP looks to be binned in favor of a soberly BMW-esque dash cluster and horizontally laid-out central console.

If this interior is accurate and not just an elaborate - and expensive - engineering mule bait-and-switch, then it signals a rather marked change in the Mini way of life. The theories of why it might be the real deal are, again, the testing expense, the expectation that the Mini will get a BMW 1 Series GT brother and the platform sharing necessitated more commonalities, or that designers might simply be over the still-unique first- and second-generation interior design (a retro-minded setup that both delights and enrages with its haphazard ergonomics). What's every bit as likely, however, is that this isn't a Mini at all - it's a next-gen 1 Series wrapped in a Mini mule shell.

While we all wait to find out if the Mini cabin dream is over, you can catch more high-res glimpses of this odd creature in our gallery.
3rd-gen Mini Cooper spy shots suggest retro-free interior originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 10:58:00 EST. Nearly every automaker is incorporating streaming music, social media functionality and other assorted apps into their infotainment systems, but one thing that's largely been missing is performance data. If you've got access to the ECU and can tap into an accelerometer, you've got the info, and now Mini is making use of it.

Driving Excitement is the latest Mini Connected app for the iPhone and it measures all the major performance parameters and more.

The Condition Check lets you keep tabs on engine and exterior temps, fuel level and whether the Sport button has been engaged, while the Force Meter visualizes longitudinal and lateral acceleration. The new Digital Sports Instruments takes over the nav screen to a display coolant temperature gauge, along with horsepower, torque and engine revs. And by entering the Excitement mode, you've got automatic access to web radio and Dynamic Music to keep the tunes flowing during your flogging.
It may have taken them a while to get around to it, but after reviving the Mini marque in 1994, BMW hasn't forgotten the original's rich racing heritage. Created out of a partnership between Mini USA and its dealer in Charleston, South Carolina, the Mini Cooper racer can be made out of any existing hardtop hatchback made between 2007 and 2012. It packs all the safety equipment necessary for competition duty - including a full roll cage, window net, racing bucket and harness - plus upgraded brakes, suspension and rolling stock, but is otherwise pretty much showroom stock. And that's the point behind B-Spec categories sanctioned by such bodies as the SCCA, Grand Am and World Challenge.

Mini and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced an investigation into certain Cooper S models after reports of engine fires on at least 12 vehicles, five of which resulted in a total loss. Interestingly enough, Bloomberg reports that in eight of those cases, the fires occurred while the vehicles were parked and turned off.

At this point, the investigation covers around 36,000 2007 and 2008 model year Mini Cooper S models. A spokesperson with NHTSA said that the complaints indicate a growing trend and that most of the reports have occurred within the last year.

Neither Mini nor the automaker's parent company, BMW, have commented on the investigation at this time.
NHTSA investigating Mini Cooper S over engine fires originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST.
The Olympics are coming to London and the games are apparently a perfect opportunity for Mini to launch a new special edition. To be fair, Mini would view a sunny Tuesday as the perfect opportunity for a new special edition. Still, the Mini London 2012 Edition is here, and it's arrival has been marked in a rather unique way.

Mini parked three examples of the all-new limited-edition Cooper side-by-side then enlisted the help of England Long Jump Champion J.J. Jegede to do what he does best.

Offered up in either Chili Red, White Silver or Lightning Blue, the Mini London 2012 Edition Coopers can be had in base, D, S or SD varieties. Each is outfitted with a pair of unique 17-inch gray wheels, red, white and blue interior stitching and a host of upgraded interior features such as lounge leather sport seats and chrome accents. The most notable interior feature, however, is the etching of the London skyline, which has a beautiful piano black backdrop.

Ten years ago, the dormant Mini brand was revitalized when BMW launched a redesigned and altogether more modern Cooper. A decade has gone by, and earlier this week, Mini just built its two-millionth vehicle. It came in the form of a Cooper convertible wearing special paint on the outside and interior extras available only on this specific car.

The two-millionth Mini was driven off the assembly line by none other than British Prime Minister David Cameron. Mini intends to give the car away as a prize in a contest being conducted on is Facebook page. The contest is called Two Million Mini - Two Million Faces, and it features Mini compiling the faces of two million fans of the brand. On September 30, a winner will be chosen at random, and their prize will be this one-of-a-kind Cooper convertible.
Continue reading UK prime minister Cameron drives two-millionth Mini off the line

UK prime minister Cameron drives two-millionth Mini off the line originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 18:01:00 EST.
Driving the Mt. Washington Auto Road is an eight-mile journey that invokes a range of emotions. The start of the ascent fills one with excitement, while the first views into the distant New England surroundings move you to a sense of awe. Transition from tarmac to dirt, however, and awe gives way to trepidation. This is a narrow road with two directions of traffic, no protective barriers and a long drop-off that sits uncomfortably close to your car's tires.

Still, this a must-drive road, and we were delighted when Mini reached out with an invitation to join them on a trip to the top. Our ride was a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman with fresh rubber and a manual transmission, and our expectations for the experience climbed into the clouds.
Now this is cool. The crew from Unit9 has joined forces with Mini to create a heinously addictive Facebook flash game. Using data from Google Maps and real-time weather, the game allows players to challenge friends and strangers to races through the virtual streets of Europe. Awesome? You bet your Union Jack it is.

Fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise will recognize the overhead view, and real engine and tire sounds from genuine Mini racers adds a little something extra to the gameplay. You can chose the length of race you want to participate in as well as whether you want to run it during the day or at night.

Players are also afforded the opportunity to choose from a number of custom Mini Cooper models with different colors and roof designs. Check out the preview video after the jump and head over to Facebook to start knocking fenders with the rest of the world.
Continue reading Mini uses Google Maps and Facebook to let you race digitally on any road in the world

Mini uses Google Maps and Facebook to let you race digitally on any road in the world originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 17:00:00 EST.
We just had seat time in a pre-production 208-horsepower Mini John Cooper Works Coupe on a little 0.7-mile Austrian circuit. By now you've all seen the 2012 Cooper Coupe officially revealed and they're still popping up testing on public roads around the Nürburgring in slight camo mode.

Coincidence? Nay. This weekend - 25 and 26 June, 2011 - the 39th running of the wildly popular Nürburgring 24-hour race takes place. There will be 250,000 fans in attendance and they shall behold, among other things (barring the onset of beer goggles and thick barbecue smoke), this Mini John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance competing in the "SP 3T" class.

We were shown this wee beast in a secret tent off to the side during our recent Austria test, but now the truth can be told. This official factory effort by Mini Deutschland is Mini's world premiere in 24-hour endurance racing. Here's hoping it can handle the 14.2-mile Nürburgring-Nordschleife for a day in really fast traffic.

Mini may have just released its own "spy photos" of the new Coupe, set to go on sale later this year, but now, our cameramen have spotted the next-generation volume model Mini out on the street. As you can see, the next Mini Cooper is expected to grow in size a bit, if only to make room for a smaller entry-level car that's coming down the pipeline (previewed by the Rocketman concept from this year's Geneva Motor Show).

While the Mini's overall shape won't be changing, we can expect the front fascia to take influence from the design seen on the Countryman crossover. Moreover, the new platform that underpins the Cooper will be shared with a new series of front-wheel-drive BMW models. The biggest changes will, of course, be found underhood, where we can likely expect an updated range of turbocharged and naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines.

Next-gen Mini Cooper spotted testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 13:31:00 EST.
Want a Mini but not impressed by the plasticky interior? If you've got the cash, you could always upgrade to the Goodwood edition to have an interior outfitted by the same people who trim the cabin of a Rolls-Royce. But if that's not your cup of Earl Gray, Bulgarian customizer Vilner has got a package that could be more up your alley.

Demonstrated on a Mini Cooper dubbed "The Italian Job," Vilner has decked out the interior in diamond-quilted Nappa leather and two-tone Alcantara. The result looks fit for a Pagani, and is complemented on the outside by a silver paint job with matte black roof and trim and a rather Gumball-style decal package.

The look is pretty sweet, particularly inside, but we dare not ask if it's any more affordable than Mini's own Goodwood special. Check out the press release after the jump and the images in the high-res gallery for more.
Continue reading Vilner out-Goodwoods the Mini Goodwood with custom Cooper

Vilner out-Goodwoods the Mini Goodwood with custom Cooper originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 08:30:00 EST.
