As we mentioned yesterday, the Autoblog team watches a lot of motorsports, but NASCAR isn't usually one of them. None of us found ourselves in front of the TV for yesterday's running of the Daytona 500, the sport's biggest race and inaugural contest to kick off the season. From what we're told, we didn't miss too much. There were left turns (lots of them), crashes and the race was cut short with 48 laps left to go on account of rain. Who was out front when the rains came? Follow the jump to find out.

Gallery: 2009 Daytona 500

[Source: New York Times | Photos: Getty Images]
Continue reading SPOILER ALERT: Daytona 500 rain-soaked results

SPOILER ALERT: Daytona 500 rain-soaked results originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 15:29:00 EST. There's been some good episodes in the past 22, and we've also suffered through some infommercials for current and upcoming Ford products. Episode 22, however, takes us to the company's new Dearborn test facility where Ford Racing Team drivers get their first crack at the GT500. It's entertaining enough to watch Ford personnel tell the likes of Jack Roush, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth to "use common sense out there" on the track, but this episode is made by the excellent videography that ensues from suction-cupping cameras to a GT500 that's being absolutely punished by some of the best drivers in the world. Our heart goes out to Ford Marketing Manager Jim Owens who sat shotgun in the GT500 lap after lap while each pro driver tried his best to impress his buddies back in the paddock.

[Source: Ford Bold Moves]
Ford Bold Moves Episode 22: Team Ford Racing Shines originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 16:56:00 EST. Tomorrow, however, a brave group of NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers will fight their instincts in a drift battle against some of the top D1 drifters at Irwindale Speedway, the site of this country's very first professional drift event in 2003. All of the proceeds from the event, called the Mopar D1 All-Star Duel presented by ShiftIntoGear, will go to the Kasey Kahne Foundation.

Kasey Kahne himself will be among the eight NASCAR drivers drifting it out at Irwindale, along with Bill Elliot, Robby Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Chris Cook, Greg Biffle and Casey Mears. The professional drifters, meanwhile, will be lead by none other than Samuel Hubinette, a.k.a. the Crazy Swede, and also include Ken Nomura, Toshiki Yoshioka, Voughn Gittin, Rhys Millen, Tanner Foust, Hideo Hiraoka, Takahiro Ueno and Tatsuya Sakuma.

Chris Cook, professional racer and part owner of the ShiftIntoGear professional driving school, will be responsible for educating the NASCAR drivers in the fine art of drifting before flying off to compete in the NASCAR Busch Series race at Kentucky Speedway this weekend.

We sure hope ESPN or some show is on hand to capture this event. Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of drifting, it's going to be fun to watch.

[Source: Irwindale Speedway]
NASCAR drivers take on pro drifters at Irwindale originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Aug 2006 17:58:00 EST. Patrick, is currently in exploratory talks with some NASCAR teams for his daughter to join the NEXTEL Cup circuit as early as next season.

Patrick's IRL contract with Rahal-Letterman Racing ends after this season, and her father/manager is also in talks with other IRL teams. T.J. and Bev Patrick, however, attended NASCAR's USG Sheetrock 400 last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway and were guests of Roush Racing in the garage area. Roush runs Fords and features drivers Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray.

So what's the deal, is NASCAR giving away free 50-inch plasma TVs for signing up or has America's favorite form of racing become the most lucrative deal around?

[Source: ESPN]

Danica Patrick switching to NASCAR, too? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Jul 2006 14:26:00 EST.
