Mahindra XUV500

Indian automaker Mahindra has announced that its first global SUV will be called the XUV500, pronounced "five double-o." The company says the vehicle's design was influenced by input from buyers all over the globe, including unnamed western markets, South Africa and, of course, India. The XUV500 will be the first unibody SUV from Mahindra to feature a transverse engine, which means that there's a good chance it'll have a front-wheel drive bias. Beyond that, details on the new SUV are scarce.

Rajesh Jejurikar, chief executive of Mahindra's automotive division (right) said that he expects the XUV500 to make his company the lead brand in SUVs.

Mahindra says that it enjoys a market share of 60.5 percent in India due to the success of products like the Bolero, Scorpio and even the Xylo sedan. Pawan Goenka, president of automotive and farm equipment sectors (left) says that the XUV500 will launch in South America simultaneously under the same name, hopefully broadening the brand's appeal around the world. Tired of waiting around for an official launch date for the hotly anticipated (in certain circles, at least) compact diesel pickup truck from Indian automaker Mahindra? Good news, then. According to a report from Automotive News, the largest utility vehicle maker in India and its U.S. distributor, Global Vehicles, will make an official announcement regarding the targeted sale date of the Pik-Up within the next two-to-three weeks.

Before you get too excited, realize that Mahindra only hopes to announce a launch date - when that date will actually be is still anyone's guess. In fact, Mahindra President Pawan Goenka said in an interview that the vehicle is still undergoing Environmental Protection Agency testing here in the States and an official application to allow the truck to be sold here has yet to take place. The truck could also receive a new name by the time it comes to market in the States.

Following the Pik-Up's official launch in the U.S., Mahindra plans to continue focusing on its export markets with a new SUV designed specifically for the European and North American markets. Judging by how long it's taken to get its first model on the market, though, we'll keep our excitement bottled up for the time being.

In August of last year, we had news of India's Mahindra and Mahindra planning to bring their Scorpio SUV to the States. Apparently, they have firmed up those plans and contracted with Atlanta's Global Vehicles USA to be the sole distributor. According to Advertising Age, Global has signed up 195 Mahindra dealers and plans to add 105 more before sales begin in fall of 2008. While the Mahindra SUV was expected, Global's advertising agency, Titan, let slip that Global will also import a "sport recreational vehicle" and a two-door pickup. The agency said all three would be turbo diesel powered.

While we don't know for sure the exact models Mahindra will send us, unless they have designed all-new U.S. spec vehicles, the pickup above, called the PIK Up, is one likely suspect. And we're just not sure what a "sport recreational vehicle" is. We guess it will be Titan's job to tell us.
