In fact, it's frowned upon to give alcohol a name that can even be associated with cars. New Jersey craft brewer Flying Fish has attracted the attention of MADD, the NJ Turnpike Authority (NJTA), and the press for breaking the taboo with its line of beers named after exits on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The Exit 4 American Trippel was the first in the "big beer" series -- they come in 750-ml bottles -- part of "a multi-year brewing experiment to brew a series of beers as diverse as the great state of New Jersey." Exit 11, a Hoppy American Wheat Ale, will be coming later this month and is "a tribute to Woodbridge's exit, where the Turnpike meets the Garden State Parkway." Which must taste delicious...

MADD feels that "The combination of a roadway and advertising for any kind of a beer doesn't make any kind of sense." The NJTA wants to make sure no one thinks it's turned into a brewer. To address both issues each bottle of flying fish includes a disclaimer, "The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has no affiliation with the Exit Series. Both the Turnpike Authority and Flying Fish agree that you should never drink and drive." That hasn't quite quelled the controversy, but it does tell people two things they should already know.

[Source: Boston.com]
MADD angry at Flying Fish brewery for naming beers after NJ freeway exits? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 08:00:00 EST. It's one of the most effective campaigns we've ever seen. The posters feature one of three vehicles, each of which has a busted-up windshield and leaves long skidmarks in its wake. The cars themselves are intact when the posters are completely flat, but when they're taped up against a static object like the towel dispenser shown, the message becomes abundantly clear.

You see, when you crumple the bottom part of the poster, the car looks like a real wreck. It's a simple, brilliant, and attention-getting way to communicate just how irresponsible and dangerous it is to get behind the wheel after you've been drinking.

[Source: AdJab]
MADD's new DWI awareness posters are a smash originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Oct 2006 10:56:00 EST. Several recent high-profile, alcohol-related accidents and fatalities in Japan have brought this issue to the forefront, and Nissan appears to be one of the first Japanese automakers to address the issue.

In a meeting earlier this month, Nissan decided to follow a policy of incorporating anti-drunken driving mechanisms in future vehicles. Two such devices under consideration are a tube-like breathalyzer ignition interlock and a PIN keypad with a multi-digit code that might be tricky for an intoxicated individual to remember.

Devices such as these are readily available in the U.S. and Europe already and are often mandated for repeat DUI/DWI offenders. Anybody remember the 40-Year-Old Virgin's ride home from the bar? Although not a laughing matter, the scene points out the potential for bypassing such mechanisms so they shouldn't be considered foolproof by any means.

Although recent changes to Japanese law have seen fatal alcohol-related accidents decline substantially over the past 5 years, Nissan has had a running association with MADD as sponsor of their Strides for Change walkathon and seems determined to help reduce these types of tragedies. This year Nissan and MADD raised $2 million for the cause.

The number of fatalities from alcohol-related accidents has gone down significantly since the 1980's but with more than 16,000 such deaths in 2004, "drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime," according to MADD.

[Sources: Drive, MADD]
Nissan developing drink-and-drive proof vehicles originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Sep 2006 12:29:00 EST. Last month, fourteen from Wakefield High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, were killed when the driver's Mazda RX-8 slammed into aconcrete barrier. In response, the high school, the Wakefield Forest police department, Mothers Against Drunk Driving(MADD) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) have gathered together to put on a safe-driving fair thisweekend. Leith Chevrolet dealership owner Chris Leith has also joined the fair.

Air bag deployment andequipment simulating alcohol intoxication are some of the exhibits at the fair. For those in the area, location andtimes of the safe-driving fair can be found at the link.

[Source: The News & Observers]
NC tragedy leads to safe-driving fair this Saturday originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Apr 2006 19:01:00 EST.
