Objects you do not want to see in your rear-view mirror: Hungry dinosaurs, pissed-off exes holding rifles, mushroom clouds and this guy. Indeed, you're looking at a Lexus IS-Force, an IS-F that's been converted to a cruiser for police duty in the English county of Humberside, which includes the notoriously criminally minded port city of Hull. For the past few years, Humberside bobbies have been chasing baddies in Subaru Imprezas, but the AWD cars just weren't up to the task at hand. What to replace 'em with? Here's what the cops were thinking, according to Sergeant Mike Peck:

"The Lexus was tested during a 12-month period along with similar vehicles and proved itself to be ideally suited in providing a dynamically safe high performance chassis along with an electronically stable platform for the computer equipment. In the past this equipment has placed huge demands on vehicles but the Lexus IS-F easily met with our requirements. The final product provides a most formidable package and is undoubtedly one of the most advanced police vehicles in the world which in turn enables my officers to deal with the criminals who use the roads for serious and organized crime."

We're actually a little weak-kneed at the very thought of the IS-Force's existence. 416-horsepower 5.0-liter V8s with the power to yank your license tend to have that effect. Even on crooks.

Gallery: Lexus IS-F Cop Car

UK police replace Imprezas with Lexus IS-F cruisers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 15:27:00 EST.
2009 Lexus IS F - Click above for high-res gallery

The Lexus IS F is the sole Japanese contender in a crowd of compact high-performance sport sedans. Boasting a full complement of performance upgrades, including a 5.0-liter V8 mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the 416-horsepower sedan blasts to 60 mph in well under five seconds. But the stats only tell part of the tale. Do the sum of the IS F's parts make it a contender against the best from Germany and America? Let's find out.

Gallery: Review: 2009 Lexus IS F

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Michael Harley / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 Lexus IS F pursues perfection, might need more personality

Review: 2009 Lexus IS F pursues perfection, might need more personality originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 11:57:00 EST.
The higher-ups at Toyota may have decided to axe the replacement for the Lexus SC convertible, but don't get too used to the idea of a world without a wind-in-your-hair Lexus. Word has it they've given the green light to a convertible version of the current IS sedan. Of course, lopping off the doors and roof of a four-door is hardly unheard of, as that's just what Audi did to make the A4 convertible, but while that 'vert is set to be replaced by the A5 cabrio, Lexus is going the opposite direction.

The IS cabrio is tipped to come in 250 and 350 varieties, with Lexus reasoning that there'd be no market for an IS-F convertible. But fret not, as the same reports suggest that a lightweight IS-F sedan is on its way, again going the opposite way of the Germans as BMW just canceled the M3 CSL program. Things are about to get a whole lot busier at the Lexus plants in Tahara and Ky?sh?.

It also seems that Toyota's luxury division doesn't quite have redesigns of its sedans ready yet. According to Automotive News, the automaker's smallest car, the IS, won't be redesigned for another few years. While the SC coupe/convertible is set to go the way of the Dodo, expect to see a coupe and convertible iteration of the IS sometime soon. Some sales help is also likely forthcoming from the Lexi-fied version of Toyota's next-gen Prius.

In a blow to high-performance sedan lovers, however, the rumored GS-F performance edition of the marque's rear-wheel drive mid-size sedan has been put on hold with fears that the sinking economy will shrink the market for gas-guzzlers too much to make it worthwhile. In more bad news, the $200K-plus LF-A supercar is also being delayed, reportedly in part for failing to meet its desired performance targets. Japan's Wald Tuning hasn't let that fact get in their way of releasing the Sports Line Black Bison bodykit. Wald's setup adds some visual aggression through an increase in the number of strakes and vents, as well as a trunklid spoiler. Doubtless, this get-up will add weight, possibly offering contradictory real-world performance from a vehicle that certainly looks like it should be fast. The amped-up visuals also help distract from the controversial fender gills, and the Black Bison package for the IS-F manages tack-on without being overly tacky. When trying to launch a brand, especially an upscale brand, it's not advisable to rebadge existing models and crank up the price. It doesn't seem to matter how good the car is, or how swanky the new $10-million-a-pop showroom is, once an Altezza, always an Altezza, and paying 20 percent more for the same car with a different logo is rightfully galling.

Japanese luxury car buyers also have quite a taste for European iron, specifically German cars from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Enthusiasts in Toyota's own backyard echo the universal car-guy complaint that Lexus vehicles lack personality. There's no denying that Lexus cars are well-made and capable, and the IS-F may finally infuse the brand with enough attitude to woo buyers of storied marques. Currently, most Lexus buyers in Japan are stepping up from Toyota ownership. Less than 5 percent of sales are conquests, and actual sales have lagged behind projections. Lexus offerings have been expanded from the initial IS, GS, and SC models to include the LS, and the RX will be coming in 2009. While it may appear less than successful so far, Toyota can afford to be patient. American buyers have fully embraced Toyota and Lexus nameplates to the point where they're both smashing successes. In another two to three years, we're betting Lexus will have a cheery song to sing in Japan.

[Source: Businessweek]

Lexus brand isn't flying in Toyota's home market originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 22 Mar 2008 16:02:00 EST. According to AutoBild, it turns out the car isn't an IS-F racer at all -- well, at least not beyond the hood and fact that it has four doors. The German paper reports that the car is actually a Lexus reskin of a 2004 Opel Vectra DTM racer (above, top). Even the engine is from the Opel DTM car, and not a Toyota V8. This could explain why no one at the Lexus stand at the salon would say a word about the car.

So Lexus might get away with never claiming it was a Lexus... cough, cough... but it's a bit odd that they would let Winding Road get the idea that it's the pet project of the IS-F's chief engineer, designed to show the true potential of Lexus' hot sedan and "something of what a full race IS-F might just feel like." Perhaps what a full-race IS-F might look like. Unless Lexus really intends for a full-race IS-F to feel like a 4-year-old Opel.

Thanks for the tip, Georg!

In exchange for your money, Lexus will give you an IS sedan stuffed with a 5.0L V8 producing 416 horsepower and 371 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm, with which you could reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds if so inclined. Attached to the muscle car-like motor is an 8-speed automatic with lighting quick 0.1 second shifts, and Lexus has fortified the car with a suspension tuned in Germany on the Nurburgring and Japan on Fuji Speedway. There's also bigger brakes, larger wheels and boy-racer bodywork that has yet to grow on us.

Let's get this out of the way first...
It would seem that the MSRP of the Lexus IS-F, while high by any Average Joe's standards, compares favorably with at least the Audi RS4. We'll have to wait on pricing for the rest of these next-gen super sedans before we can tell you which one's the best value. The IS F's engine, meanwhile, falls short of only the indomitable AMG 6.3L V8 and a detuned version of the Corvette ZR-1 engine, and there's no shame in that.

[Source: Lexus]

Gallery: Lexus IS-F

Continue reading 2008 Lexus IS F to start at $56,000

2008 Lexus IS F to start at $56,000 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jan 2008 13:48:00 EST. Lexus hasn't released any details about the DTM-esque racer, but from the looks of its massively flared wheel arches, comically large diffusers and righteous wing, it's all business with a side of flash. Where Lexus might campaign such a vehicle is open to speculation and we'd encourage you to do just that in the comments below.

[Source: Lexus via World Car Fans]

Lexus IS-F Racing Concept coming to Tokyo Auto Salon originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 Jan 2008 15:51:00 EST. The gaping gills and misshapen snout - the most radical exterior elements - have done little to distinguish itself from its lesser brethren, and the interior is largely unchanged, save a few badges and trim pieces.

Lexus execs have recognized that more has to be done to separate the performance brand from the run-of-the-mill models, but even so, they maintain that the IS-F will serve as the design template from which other F-badged offerings will be based.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s design chief, Wahei Hirai, admitted that Lexus' aim of competing with the AMGs and Ms of the world would take a different tact than its Germanic rivals. Hirai is quoted by Wards as saying that "They appreciate consistency, or continuity, very much. We like to make (our vehicles) a different way." Difference for difference sake is rarely a good thing, and the IS-F may have already proven that fact.

[Source: Wards]

Gallery: Lexus IS-F

Lexus IS-F design to influence F-lineup, even though it ain't pretty originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 19:34:00 EST.
Lexus is using the F brand to launch itself into the arena of premium luxury sports cars. Hitched to the wagon of the recently introduced IS-F is the next salvo: F-Sport performance accessories. Presumably, if you like to tune your cars with manufacturer-backed parts, or if you have a 2006 or newer IS 250 or IS 350 and want to hook up a home-cooked IS-F, this is where you should look first.

Parts include: 19" forged alloy wheels, front and rear brakes with cross-drilled discs and blue calipers and carbon-rotored beauties with yellow calipers, a carbon fiber engine cover, performance air intake, lowering spring set, performance shock absorber kit, sway bar kit, and lower rear chassis brace, among other goodies. Follow the jump for the full press release, and be sure to check out the gallery of hi-res pics.

The engine bay is filled with 5 liters of 4-valve V8 putting out 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque. The Minilite-esque wheels hide a Brembo braking system with six piston front calipers and cross-drilled rotors 14.2 inches in diameter. The sill extensions wrap up the front fenders to form a styling detail reminiscent of extractor vents, and the rest of the body has been tweaked in the wind tunnel to improve high speed aerodynamics. It all sounds good when you read the spec sheet, and the car does at least look aggressive . What everyone's dying to know, though, is "has Lexus done it this time?" Automobile magazine had the same burning curiosity, and they just also happened to have an IS-F sitting in their lot.

In no time, they headed over to their local Dynojet. The result? Well, they're a little disappointed, and they're calling the torque delivery peaky. Looking at the dyno graph, we're not sure we'd agree entirely with that assessment. There's at least 225 lb-feet at the wheels from 1,800 rpm, topping out at 318 lb-ft. First, let's point out that 15 percent torque loss through a drivetrain including an eight speed automatic is pretty phenomenal. Secondly, the torque curve is pretty fat below the peak. What is surprising to everyone, though, is the way the power drops off precipitously on the other side of the 5,200 rpm peak. You'd think an engine with 4-cams and Yamaha-designed cylinder heads would be a revver. Of course, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics and these dyno results are sure to kick up some debate. What still remains to be seen is how the entire package works when pitted against its bogeyed competition. For that, we must still wait.

[Source: Automobile, photo: Automobile]
Pull my dyno - Automobile puts the IS-F on the rollers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 11:29:00 EST. Quality woes didn't help, but overall, the brand induced yawns. Big, body-on-frame barges are still available at the Lincoln store, but there's also a market for luxury cars filled with technology and quality that invokes a ho-hum response. Yes, folks, that means that Lexus is getting sucked in by the vacuum Cadillac left when they went all Led Zeppelin on us. Well, that's not entirely true - what is happening, though, is the age of the average Lexus buyer is sneaking up. Currently it's at 51 years old, while kids who spent the 1980s learning hair metal riffs on their B.C. Rich are choosing Infiniti, Audi, BMW, or even the somewhat fusty Mercedes.

If you were at Yasgur's farm with your Microbus, chances are that you've got a lust to wheel around in an ES350 for your retirement years. The average age of that car's buyers is 61, and only Cadillac, Lincoln, and Jaguar have more buyers north of 60 in this segment. This data has Toyota's fancy division rethinking their future plans, lest they be left in the dust. While Lexus may not release a direct competitor, they're keeping a close watch on how BMW launches its 1-series. The way BMW woos buyers is what Lexus has to do, according to Jim Farley, who recently left for Ford. Younger buyers are looking for edgier cars with a higher degree of technology integration, so Lexus must make a serious run at building a real performer with the IS-F, as well as push design and image. Merry Christmas, says Lexus, which announced today that its hopped up entry-level luxury sedan will go on sale Christmas Day in Japan. Also unknown until now is the exact horsepower rating of the car's 5.0L V8, which has been revealed as 311kW, or 417 horsepower when converted from kilowatts, at 6,600 RPM. Meanwhile, torque is pegged at 372 ft-lb at 5,200 RPM. The 4.968L engine features variable valve timing on the intake side of things, as well as both direct and port fuel injection systems, which is interesting and a little confusing. We'll leave it to an engineer to explain that one. As we already knew, however, the engine's power will be divided up into tiny pieces by an 8-speed automatic sourced from the Lexus LS 460. Pricing starts at ¥7,600,000 or $65,170.00 USD when converted. Perhaps if you've been good this year, Santa will drive an IS-F all the way from Japan and park it under your tree. If not, you'll have to wait for its impending U.S. arrival like the rest of us.

Check out Toyota's full press release after the jump.

[Source: Lexus via MT forums]

Gallery: Lexus IS-F

Continue reading Lexus IS-F sales begin 12/25 with 417 HP underhood

Lexus IS-F sales begin 12/25 with 417 HP underhood originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 09:55:00 EST. In keeping with tradition, the L-finesse'd automaker is teaming up with Neiman Marcus to offer its own special holiday edition ride to trust fund kids and recent divorcees in the form of the Lexus IS-F "Special Build."

For those of you in a higher tax bracket and smitten with the new 400 HP sedan, the duo is offering a limited run of 50 IS-F "Special Builds" that come swathed in an Obsidian black paint job, perforated leather seats with white stitching and an "F" logo embossed into the headrests. The steering wheel gets white leather accents and when you're not up to enjoying the burble from the 5.0-liter V8, you can bask in your favorite Barry Manilow hit album through a Mark Levinson premium surround system with nav and Bluetooth connectivity.

Lexus and Neiman Marcus realizes that deep pockets and driving talent have a tendency to be mutually exclusive, so included for your $68,000 is travel and lodging for buyers to attend a complimentary course from Skip Barber. They're taking orders beginning at noon on Thursday, October 18th, so get your platinum card ready and kick off the holiday season right.

Top tip Tony!

[Source: Lexus, Neiman Marcus]
Continue reading Neiman Marcus "Special Build" Lexus IS-F

Neiman Marcus "Special Build" Lexus IS-F originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 14:56:00 EST.
Lexus = luxury. That's been the traditional equation, and rather sedate luxury at that. The IS is more fun, certainly, but it's not really a monster-revving tire smoker -- at least, not before it's been fettled. (I don't know what the means either - Ed.) It appears, though, that as Lexus works to broaden its image with true sports car credentials, a lot of tires are going to meet their ends to make the point. The video above is seventy-eight seconds of tire-smoking drift and spin, courtesy of an IS-F at Laguna Seca. If this is what the IS-F does... well, then the LF-A should be a whole lotta fun. On hand will be the Lexus IS-F, a very high-performance version of the brand's smallest model. What better place then to also announce a new line of performance parts and accessories for Lexus? We have no idea what the performance parts will be, but will find out at a press conference in Las Vegas on October 30th. We're guessing a performance exhaust and air filter are a given, maybe a strut-tower brace, and if we're really lucky a TRD supercharger to make the 400 HP 5.0L V8 even more fierce.

Along with the IS-F and announcement of new performance parts, Lexus will also bring along nine project vehicles to the SEMA Show. We're also expecting the all-new Corolla, Matrix, a heavy-duty Tundra and convertible FJ Cruiser from Toyota to be present.

[Source: Inside Line]

Gallery: Lexus IS-F

Lexus rolling out factory performance parts at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2007 10:01:00 EST. The tourney will be for charity, but the top prize of a one-year lease on a Lexus IS-F is for the winner to keep and use as he or she pleases. Hosted by tennis champ Andy Roddick, the tourney will take place at New York's Rockefeller Center next month, while money gathered from entrant fees in the three-day tournament will benefit the Andy Roddick Foundation for neglected, abused and sick children.
