Winkelmann: Lamborghini to go racing, no Superleggera planned

To the outside observer, Lamborghini and Ferrari may appear to be peas in a pod, and while the two exotic automakers may arrive at similar points, they come from completely different directions. While Ferrari remains essentially a racing team that produces road cars to support their motorsport campaigns, sporadic privateer entries notwithstanding, Lamborghini has never had the same degree of racing pedigree. That may be about to change, however.

This year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance highlighted Lamborghini as a featured marque, and the guys over at Garage419 had a chance to talk with Stefan Winkelmann. The Lamborghini CEO revealed that the company is preparing a full-on factory racing program, and though details are still a few weeks away, Winkelmann said the factory racing effort would start in Europe. Winkelmann also dispelled rumors of a potential RWD-only variant of the new Gallardo LP560-4, as well as a Superleggera version, saying that Lamborghini had no such plans for the time being. Lamborghini ceases production of Gallardo Superleggera

The king is dead; long live the king. With barely a whimper, the short-lived and short-geared Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera has slipped quietly into the night. Its truncated production run yielded just 172 examples – 10 in white, 34 in gray, 37 in black, 45 in yellow and 46 in orange (each of whose owners thought they were being original) – ensuring that the Superleggera will become a collector's item years from now. The departure of the Superleggera comes hot on the heels of the introduction of the new LP560-4 and makes room for a new stripped out Gallardo.

SEMA 2007: Hope you aren't eating while viewing this Lambo

Anyone unlucky enough to make it over to the Sony Xplod booth at SEMA this week will be greeted by this "Lamborghini" replica that takes some of the best elements of the Italian supercar and twists them into something that isn't for anyone with a weak stomach. Built by The Custom Shop for John Robert Wargo, some of the details look right, but it basically only has a loose association with the real thing. Blending elements of the Diablo, Gallardo Superleggera and Murcielago, it is none of the above. It's actually powered by a 450 HP, 5.3L Chevy LS4 and is said to be good enough to push this 3200-lb car to 200 mph. We sincerely doubt it, especially considering its dubious aerodynamics and the TV monitors and speakers pouring out of every orifice on this "vehicle." We really doubt that it would be up to the task of going down the road at even regular highway speeds, let alone 200 mph. If you have the guts, click through to see the full gallery.
