2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni - Click above for high-res image gallery

It was eleven in the morning on a typical Thursday when my phone rang. "How'd you like to drive the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni in Beverly Hills at 3:00 pm... with Valentino Balboni?" Aside from screaming "YES!!!" at the top of my lungs, all sorts of thoughts started to crowd my brain. What should I wear? Should I shave? Do I address him as Valentino? Mr. Balboni? Your majesty? And most of all, am I worthy? Normally at car events, you wind up talking to a bunch of MBA-types and, no offense, but really, who cares? You drink too much, brag too much, dress how you like - it simply doesn't matter. But this was Valentino Balboni. Respect is demanded. Then I got a text message from Drew Phillips, our resident ace photographer. "No flip flops." Right.

It's believed that Valentino Balboni has driven 80% of all Lamborghinis ever made.

In case you're not sure what all the drama is about, Valentino Balboni spent four decades as a test driver for Lamborghini. In fact, for several of those years he was the test driver. Not only has Balboni been at the helm of every prototype Lamborghini since 1973, but most of their production cars got a quick lap around the streets of Sant'Agata with Valentino at the helm, just to make sure they were up to Lamborghini snuff. Still not clear as to why the man's such a big deal? It's believed that Valentino Balboni has driven 80% of all Lamborghinis ever made.

Balboni was instrumental in the development of the Gallardo, Lamborghini's most successful model of all time with over 9,000 sold. Lamborghini has just released a very special and very limited edition of the Gallardo, dubbed the LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, after their own living legend. Just 250 will be produced and all are rear-wheel drive - a first for Lamborghini in nearly a decade. But how did this car come to be? I was lucky enough to spend ninety minutes in a Lamborghini Valentino Balboni with Valentino Balboni asking him exactly that. Plus a whole lot more - click on the jump to read all about it.

Gallery: First Drive: 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading First Drive (Kinda): 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni... with Valentino Balboni!

First Drive (Kinda): 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni... with Valentino Balboni! originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 12:31:00 EST. The Dallara-designed masterpiece first met the world in 1965 at the Turin Auto Salon and was apparently stored after that until Marios Kritkos fell in love with it in 1977. Kritkos, who handled the importation of Lamborghini cars for Cyprus, went to Sant'Agata in 1978 and dragged the chassis back to Cyprus. The chassis has recently been "discovered," not that it was ever really lost, and Los-Angeles based Joe Sackey (author of The Lamborghini Miura Bible) and Gary Bobileff (whose website has a sweet Ferrari-themed interface) now have Miura #1 at Gary's shop, where it will get a restoration to an astounding standard. Give us a pair of Snidely Whiplash goggles, and we'd drive that thing every day.

[Source: Hemmings]
Lamborghini Miura No. 1 found, set for Cali restoration originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 16:58:00 EST.
There are few cars that are a true one-of-one. If you've ever watched Barrett-Jackson auctions on television, you've seen the guy who claims his '67 Camaro is the only one in existence... with that particular combination of options. Yes, his car is unique, but we wouldn't declare it a one-off by any means. We're talking a truly unique car, like this 1968 Lamborghini Miura Roadster with coachwork by Bertone. Built for the 1968 Brussels Motor Show, the Miura Roadster features an open top with larger air intakes integrated into a rollover hoop. The rear of the car was also reshaped with a larger spoiler and unique taillights. The car was recently restored to its original condition including its beautiful metallic blue paint. We saw it in person at this year's Pebble Beach Concours, a mere week after it was fully completed, where it finished second in the Lamborghini class. The Miura Roadster is now being offered for sale, and we imagine it will go for quite a bit more than the $330,000 it cost to restore the car.

Enthusiasts of exotic Italian automobiles everywhere owe a debt of gratitude to Adam Gordon. The New York real estate developer has just completed what is sure to have been an extremely costly restoration of the Lamborghini Bertone Miura Spyder. We say "the" Miura Spyder because it is the only one ever made. In fact its serial number doesn't even show in the company's register.

As we reported when Gordon first acquired the car a year and a half ago, the Miura Spyder was made by Nuccio Bertone and Marcello Gandini as a one-off show car in 1968, when it was unveiled at the Brussels auto salon, much to the amazement of even Ferruccio Lamborghini. The car was then brought back to Sant'Agata where Lamborghini's own people, in consultation with Bertone, deemed it impossible to put into production. The factory then refinished the only existing example in green with all manner of extra chrome bits and sold it to the International lead and Zinc Research Organization, which used it as a showcase piece and brought it to car shows in such locations as Detroit, Montreal, Anaheim, London, Tokyo, Sydney and Paris, before finally donating in 1981 it to the Boston Museum of Transportation in exchange for a $200,000 tax receipt. The car then disappeared largely into obscurity for 25 years as collectors failed - incredibly - to comprehend the value of the only factory-original Miura targa in the world.

Although the Boston museum invested what must have been considerable time and energy into refurbishing the Miura Spyder, it wasn't until Gordon got his hands on it that the car was returned to its original Bertone condition by the Bobileff Motorcar Company. The car's history has been chronicled in a new book, "The Lamborghini Miura Bible" by Joe Sackey. Follow the jump to read the full press release, and click the thumbnails below for a small gallery of images of the Miura Spyder.

Every year in August the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance gives car enthusiasts a chance to see exceptional automobiles together at the same place at the same time. With Lamborghini as a featured marque this year, it was inevitable that some of the best of the breed will be on the 18th fairway in just a few days. The earliest known 350GT (Lamborghini's first model), the earliest known Miura, and several one-off examples will be on display. As a bonus, Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini's legendary test driver, will be serving as a class judge. More information can be found in the press release after the jump, and look for our coverage of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as we report live from Monterey next week.

Continue reading Rare Lamborghinis to be featured at Pebble Beach

Rare Lamborghinis to be featured at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:01:00 EST.
Most car enthusiasts know about the Lamborghini Miura, one of the most beautiful and desirable cars from the '60s and '70s, but few know about the one-off Miura Jota and subsequent SV/J models. The Jota was built in 1970 as an experimental car to test new ideas for the upcoming Miura SV. It featured a lightweight body with extra vents, a split sump engine (implemented on later SV models), "Megaphono" exhaust pipes, and a bevy of bespoke features. After the car was finished, it was sold to a loyal customer. Unfortunately, the Jota was involved in an accident and was completely destroyed when it burned to the ground. However, when several of Lamborghini's customers heard about the car, they asked if they could buy one of their own. Lamborghini decided not to officially build a production Jota, but they did offer conversions based on the SV model. The Lamborghini Registry lists only six "works" SV/J models, all featuring the Jota bodywork. The one seen here is chassis number 4892, and it will be auctioned off at the upcoming Russo and Steele classic car auction in Monterey. It's tough to tell what the car will go for since the SV/J models rarely ever change hands, but you can bet it won't be a paltry sum.

With all of the events going on around the area it's hard to see everything, but we wanted to share some of the highlights from their catalog. Located at the Marriott, just across from the RM Auction, Russo & Steele displays some of their most eye-catching pieces right on the sidewalk out front of the hotel. It gives the public, and presumably some potential bidders, a chance to see some of the coolest cars right out in the open.

This year we were greeted by a sweet blue Lamborghini Miura SV, along with a selection of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth-built or inspired vehicles. Ed Roth's "Globe Hopper" was the last vehicle he made. It's a Porsche powered trike that sports his typical flamboyant styling in a fully functional vehicle. Beside it was the "Great Speckled Bird," another outrageous trike with VW power this time. Joining these Roth originals are two special tribute vehicles: The 2007 Bubble Top Astro Sled by Roth fan Dave Shuten, and the 2005 Rat Fink Chopper by longtime Roth associate Jimmy C. The Astro Sled is said to be a million hour project, and features great details like a blown 1957 Hemi with a Weiland Blower and eight Stromberg carbs. The chopper is a real trip, styled to resemble the immortal Rat Fink on two wheels.

Just down the street is the parking garage where some of the offerings were pre-staging. We spotted a beautiful silver 1955 Mercedes 300 Gullwing, 1984 Lola Corvette Racecar, Shelby GT350, GT500 and GT500KR, 1970 Cuda AAR, 1956 Alfa Giulietta Super Spyder, 1938 Ford Monoposto, 1966 Prostreet Nova, among others. There was even a 2008 Viper stuck in the corner. Other notable cars at this sale that we didn't get pics of include a genuine and rare 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang G.T. 350 R competition model, a Batmobile from "Batman Returns," and a handful of super rare classic GMs from the collection of Reggie Jackson. The sale runs Friday and Saturday nights.

Gallery: Pebble Beach Week 2007: Russo & Steele Auction preview

Pebble Beach Week 2007: Russo & Steele Auction preview originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 17:37:00 EST. Not only can you find electronics, DVDs, clothes, gourmet food, and just about anything else on your wishlist, but there is the eBay Motors area that offers up a helping or two of automotive wish fulfillment on a regular basis. And today's find is one of the best we've come across in some time. A 1970 Lamborghini P400 Spinto. Better known as a Miura S to most enthusiasts.

EBay Item number 150063006307 is self-described as "one of the nicest ones available today in the USA." This Giallo/blue baby also has full "REGISTRO LAMBORGHINI" certification due to its original condition. Chassis number #4401 has but 14,244 miles on the clock and even in the subpar photos, looks splendid.

First shown at Geneva in 1966, the Miura was an instant smash hit for Lamborghini, vaulting the small carmaker to supercar fame. The mid-engined V12 layout was groundbreaking and the Gandini-penned body still remains one of the most beautiful sports car shapes ever created. Originally sporting 350 hp, the "S" (for Spinto, or tuned) bumped that to 370 hp through reshaped combustion chambers, different carburetors, higher lift cams and improved breathing.

Only 140 of these "S" cars were built before the arguably no-better SV version was introduced at the 1971 Geneva Salon. The SV had more power but was also a bit fatter and lost some of the original appeal with the addition of the rear wheel arches and the loss of the headlight "eyelashes." Not very often that one this nice comes up and the $200,000 current high bid reflects the interest this car still draws. Deservedly so, we might add. You still have almost 6 days to bid, so get a move on.

[Source: eBay, Lamborghini Registry]
eBay find of the Day: Lambo Miura S originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 16:29:00 EST. Speculation sure is fun, isn't it?

It'd be nice to see. The Miura Concept, while not as jaw-droppingly beautiful as the car it pays homage to (very few cars are), is a stunner and an excellent modern interpretation of the classic. It's also probably not unreasonable to think that certain people at Lamborghini are irked knowing that the Audi Brand Group's next biggest attention-grabber is going to be the R8, and not a car wearing the raging bull on its hood.

A limited-run of few hundred world-class Miuras would fix that in a hurry.

[Source: Pistonheads]
Rumor: Production possibility for the Lamborghini Miura? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Jul 2006 14:58:00 EST.
