When we drove the Shelby GT500KR at Miller Motorsports Park last May, we were impressed with the steps that Ford and Shelby had taken to make its new King of the Road a special vehicle. Not only was the KR a huge improvement over the GT500 (which led to the development of the 2010 GT500), but the car featured trick items like a carbon fiber hood and lightweight wheels wrapped with R-compound tires. At that time, Shelby also proudly told us that none of the KR-specific parts would be available for sale separately to ensure that owners of lesser Mustangs could not make shadetree replicas that might compromise the KR's image. Of course, all of this exclusivity and performance came at a price: $79,995 to be exact.

Unfortunately, as one GT500KR owner has learned the hard way, replacement parts for this pony car can be surprisingly dear. After an unfortunate incident with a critter on the road resulted in a modestly damaged front end, the owner in question was shocked to learn about the high cost of his vehicle's replacement parts. And as is increasingly the way these days, he aired his displeasure on the web. That initial report has since touched off a firestorm in the online Shelby community, with the issue spreading to numerous forums and chat rooms.

So just why were these replacement parts such a contentious issue? In the main, it's a numbers thing. As in $18,400 for a new hood, $3,392.50 for a front spoiler, and even $632.50 for a set of hood pins, among other things. Further, the disgruntled owner informed a forum member that Shelby requires any damaged KR parts to be returned to their facility in Las Vegas before new replacements can be sent out.

Obviously, a bit of due diligence was needed to verify the claimed replacement pricing and parts return policy, so we got on the phone with Jim Owens, vice president of marketing and communications at Shelby to get the straight scoop. Click through to the jump to hear what we learned.

When the new Knight Rider hit the airwaves, some were a bit disappointed thoroughly livid that Michael's new ride was a Mustang. Since the original KITT was a Trans Am, purists cried foul and said a more natural replacement would be the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Fortunately or unfortunately, one enterprising Camaro owner decided to take up the task and right the show's perceived wrongs. Camaro5 poster Spaceballone picked up a $135 Scanner Light equipped with 64 ice blue LEDs and three built-in patterns. The hood slot in the Camaro fit the kit perfectly, with juice provided by the car's battery.

And with that, our long national nightmare is over. According to the Los Angeles Times' entertainment section, NBC has killed Knight Rider after one season and 17 episodes. Although we won't miss the interminably idiotic dialog, plot chasms, seventh-grade acting and logic-defying vehicle morphing, there will be a KITT-sized hole in our hearts for Mr. Nunez' weekly live-blog of the unfortunate proceedings. If you want to relive past episodes, read our review of the KR or just peruse through galleries of the new KITT (below). Otherwise, let's just forget about this embarrassing attempt at resurrection and get on with our lives.

Welcome to the Series Finale of Knight Rider. No, that's not official, but it may as well be. Counseling will be made available to those in denial. Okay, it won't. Part of me might actually miss Knight Rider, because making fun of it has been such a blast. Nevertheless, it's over. I probably should have taped plastic up like they do in the locker rooms of playoff teams about to clinch the title. That way I can keep the champagne spray off my A/V receiver.

STRONGER THAN IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE--Mike (Justin Bruening) and KITT (voiced by Val Kilmer) are trying to track down a stolen serum that maximizes the recipient's physicality before it gets into the wrong hands. With the help of the lab's research assistant, Billy (Paul Campbell) learns some information about the serum that will help Mike when he takes on the now powerful thief. Meanwhile, Sarah (Deanna Russo) is overwhelmed with her new duties and quickly learns how much work it will take to reinstitute the Foundation for Law and Government.

He offers to lend a hand in order to bring the bar back to its original glory. Meanwhile, Mike gets suspicious when he hears of the recent fires at the bar and discovers that someone has secretly being trying to get Julie to sell the place.

Last week, Mike broke all the rules of Fight Club and solved The Mystery of Dead Tiki Barber. Then KITT yelled like a drill instructor in the final moments of the show. It was as cringe-inducing as it sounds. Anyway, the post-reboot skinny on Knight Rider is this: it has gone from being hilariously bad to surprisingly boring -- especially for the crew that's now essentially jailed at the Fortress of Suck. Including tonight, there's 3 episodes to go before the Cancellation Reaper does his inevitable thing.

"Fly By Knight"
EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE HELP--A plane carrying a 10 year-old federal witness has crashed or so it seems. Mike tries to help the DEA Agent Jessie Renning, by informing her that the crash has been faked and that the drug dealer that killed his father has kidnapped the boy. Considering this information for a brief moment, she instead arrests him for hindering her investigation. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to make a deal with the Deputy Director of National Intelligence for autonomy for the SSC's future cases. Running out of time, Mike and KITT need to find the boy before he is forced to tell where the drugs have been hidden and is killed.

BAIT AND SWITCH--Mike jumps into the thick of a bank heist and tries to stop it, but instead becomes one of the robbers' hostages. Oddly, the robbers do not seem interested in the bank's money. Apparently, they have a specific plan that includes the safe deposit boxes and the husband of one of their hostages. Unable to communicate with KITT and his team, Mike tries to enlist the help of the other hostages to stop the robbers from escaping. Unfortunately, one of the so-called hostages is one of the robbers, which makes Mike's job even more difficult.

Last week, we learned that Carrie's survived the massive explosion, that her dad is Shaft, and that she's not good to go for field ops any more. Exit Carrie. Concerned, Mike goes looking for her and in return gets the answers he has been searching for about his past. Meanwhile, the NSA has decided to dismantle the SSC now that Dr. Graiman is dead and they can then move forward with KITT's nemesis KARR. With Torres' permission they take out KITT's chip that contains his personality and memories and place it in KARR. Upset by what has happened, Mike, Sarah, Billy and Zoe devise a plan to find where KITT has been taken and get him up and running and destroy the evil KARR once and for all.

Well, what do you know? K.I.T.T. was a big hit here at Barrett-Jackson today. We'd never have guessed that there would be enough fans (with money) of the original Knight Rider series here at the auction to drive bidding all the way to $40,000 (add another $4K in fees), but indeed there were. This isn't actually one of the original cars that was used by the Hoff in the '80s, but bits and pieces of it were in fact used in the craptastic new version that our own Mr. Núñez so lovingly mocks each and every week in his hilarious live blog. Not all is lost, though, for fans of the real K.I.T.T., as this is a fully functioning replica, complete with the trademark flashing front strobe lights and two working monitors inside. Plus, how many of your friends have talking cars that are signed by George Barris? None. Perhaps it was worth the dough after all.

Alex should be writing this post, as he's the sharp end of the stick with which we've been poking NBC for the past 11 episodes of the new Knight Rider. His Knight Rider Liveblogs are ruthless and hilarious at the same time, and next weeks will be a high watermark for his creative series of posts. That's because episode 12 of what will surely be the first and last season of Knight Rider in the modern era will feature the showdown between our beloved KITT and his nemesis KARR. In the original series, KARR (Knight Automated Roving Robot) was the prototype version of KITT and a little rougher around the edges compared to KITT himself, i.e. he had a programming error that made him "unstable" and liable to kill an innocent pedestrian with a Turbo Boost to the chest. The modern KARR, however, is a full on Transformer that's bipedal and has a mean right hook. Take a gander at the official preview after the jump that appeared at the end of episode of 11, and come back next Wednesday night when Alex enters the ring with KITT and KARR and only one comes out alive.

Last week when we left off, Mike and KITT were sent on a scavenger hunt by a kidnapper/terrorist who obviously never has any rollover minutes on his mobile phone. Anyway, one thing led to another and Mike rescued Ambassador Erykah Badu from the Chatty Kidnapper's clutches, only to go and get himself caught in the final ten minutes. Then, Knight Rider became Speed 3: Knight Rider's Writers Run Out of Ideas, as the bad guys loaded a bomb onto KITT and told Mike that he has to stay over 100 mph or go boom. Speaking of going "BOOM!", that's what happened to Carrie when one of ther FBI agents opened a booby-trapped door in the warehouse after they arrived, freeing actress Sydney Tamila Poitier from this KITT-shaped small-screen prison.

Day Turns Into Knight

MIKE AND KITT CONTINUE ON THEIR QUEST TO STOP A TERRORIST FROM DETONATING A NUCLEAR WEAPON AND KILLING THE AMBASSADOR--Mike and KITT are now transporting a bomb in the trunk of the car, but in order for it not to explode they must stay above 100 miles-per-hour. Trying to come up with a plan to disable the bomb, they load KITT onto the plane to buy some time and keep up their speed. Clinging to life, Rivai manages to give a clue to find where the terrorist is hiding. Meanwhile, Sarah receives some upsetting news about her dad.

MIKE AND KITT TRY TO RESCUE A KIDNAPPED FOREIGN AMBASSADOR FROM A TERRORIST IN TIME FOR PEACE TALKS--Mike (Justin Bruening) and KITT (voiced by Val Kilmer) are sent on an endless string of mini-missions by a crazy terrorist in exchange to keep Ambassador Olara Kumali (guest star Vanessa Williams) alive, but they soon realize that they are part of a bigger plan. Trying to outsmart the terrorist, Rivai (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) and a team of FBI agents find themselves in an explosive situation. And... after a lengthy hiatus, we're back. New Year's Eve marks the return of Knight Rider. It's the 9th episode, there are nine episodes left, and in a few hours we all ring in 2009. Huzzah.

Knight Rider's New Year's resolution is to not suck as much, so starting with next week's episode, they're going to try and make the show better. As if. My New Year's resolution is to watch less Knight Rider, which NBC should make easy for me when it throws dirt on KITT after the February 25th episode.

KNIGHT FEVER: KITT may have met his match when he falls victim to a computer virus -- Mike must stop the spread of a computer virus that threatens a total global meltdown. The job gets much harder when KITT is infected. Meanwhile, Mike's jealousy begins to show when Sarah reconnects with an old flame, who may be the key to solving the latest mission.

On New Year's Eve, Knight Rider returns to the airwaves following its extended holiday hiatus. Once the 12/31 episode is out of the way (it's reportedly one of the earliest ones filmed, so expect it to suck miserably), the too-little-too-late "reboot" of Knight Rider will get rolling, with character deaths (yes!) and a story arc that will include a KITT vs. KARR showdown. As in the original series (which seems like I, Claudius compared to the current dreck) Peter Cullen will provide KARR with his voice. Unfortunately, instead of a two-tone 3rd-gen F-body, that voice will be attached to giant transforming robot. That's all good for Peter Cullen, who knows from voicing transforming robots, but for Knight Rider it seems pretty dopey, which is par for the course. Liveblogging the final nine episodes of this catastrophe is gonna be fun, and it all resumes Wednesday at 8pm Eastern.

Gang, you and I have nine more Knight Rider liveblogs ahead of us, then it's over. NBC hasn't officially announced the show's inevitable cancellation, but you don't exactly need to be Stephen Hawking to figure this one out. After first giving the show a baffling full-season order, then announcing that it's being completely revamped after ratings took a nosedive following the 1-week break it had in November, NBC suits have reconsidered the number of episodes they want to subject us to when Knight Rider returns from hiatus. The 22-episode full-season order has officially been cut back to 17, the last of which will air on February 25. Barring some kind of ratings miracle, Knight Rider will then join last year's NBC retread fiasco, Bionic Woman, in the Bad Decision Hall of Fame. According to the L.A. Times, Knight Rider's Wednesday 8:00 PM slot will go to a new, as-yet-unnanounced program starting March 4th. Note to NBC: this would be a good time to run the Top Gear pilot. Just saying, you know? After all, you'll need something to replace Knight Rider next fall. As for KITT and friends, they return on New Year's Eve for their season-ending (and probably series-ending) 9-episode run. Seriously, was there any doubt that this would happen? Here's the skinny, verbatim, from Ford's press release:

The 2010 Mustang will be seen in the episode "Knight of the Zodiac" inside the Satellite Surveillance Chamber, also known as the SSC or "KITT Cave." The 2010 Mustang poses as KITT during an inspection and impresses everyone.

As crazy as it sounds, this particular bit of product placement may be more subtle than the pathetic shilling of Goodyear tires that NBC cooked up for last week's episode, during which KITT actually utters, "The tread is from a Goodyear Assurance ComforTread. It's one of the most popular brands of tires sold and distributed in North America." Somehow, I managed not to immediately kill myself upon hearing that and, as a result, I'll be liveblogging tomorrow night's Knight Rider pony parade. You know where and when to find me.

Knight Rider. It is the bane of my existence, and it is going to get radically changed according to The Hollywood Reporter. The current formula is getting canned, as are three of the regular actors -- Sydney Tamiia Portier (Carrie), Yancey Arias (Alex), and Bruce Davison (Graiman). Knight Rider czar Gary Scott Thompson is calling this a full "reboot" of the show, which follows the partial reboot that occurred between the pilot telemovie and weekly series premiere. Why is this necessary? There are two key reasons.

  1. The show sucks. The acting, the writing, Attack Mode K.I.T.T. -- I could go on. For more details, read the liveblogs. You will then know what I do: this is crap.
  2. No one watches. KR apologists will talk about how the show plays well with guys in the 18-34 demo, but seriously, these people need to zip it. Last week's episode was beaten outright in its timeslot by Cuidado con el Angel. That's a telenovela that airs on ... wait for it, because this is completely awesome ... Univision.
So, in an effort to make the show not suck so that more people watch, Thompson says, "We're moving away from the terrorist-of-the-week formula and closer to the original, making it a show about a man and his car going out and helping more regular people, everymen." Regular characters Mike, Sarah, Zoe, and Billy survive the rejiggering, and the word is that NBC will look to stunt-cast other actors in the weekly stories to add some juice. (Cough...Hoff...cough). The new-and-probably-still-not-improved KR will arrive in January. If this frantic re-do doesn't yield marked improvements ratings-wise, we expect to see KITT turn into a pumpkin instead of an F-150 at season's end.
