Jeremy Clarkson did an 11-minute interview with a South African radio station that has a name to match its geographic location. Clarkson discussed what it took to make the Top Gear segment that had them drivng around the Monaco GP circuit on a race weekend, the coming Ron Howard movie Rush about the 1976 F1 battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt and Top Gear Festival 2012 "with an array of cars that has never been seen anywhere."

But what has caught everyone's attention - everyone except for the radio interviewer, that is - was Clarkson saying that the festival would be "about the only time" he, Hammond and May would work together in 2012 because "there's no Top Gear this year." There's video of the interview below, the bombshell at about 8:10. Since it's all a bit confusing, Mr. Clarkson himself has set the record straight via his personal Twitter account, confirming that Top Gear will return in January of 2013, though there will be a Christmas special some time before that.

The reason petrolheads will be missing out on their BBC fix? Simon Cowell, apparently. "Sunday nights will be full of fat people singing," said Clarkson. "Top Gear is a medium size van. Cowell is a juggernaut. When he has finished his singing competition, our new series will start."

Top Gear Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux can attribute a fair portion of the its celebrity to the Top Gear crew's exuberant doting. After attempting to destroy the truck via a smattering of inhumane methods, traversing the frozen wastes of ~~Antarctica~~ the Arctic and braving the fires of Icelandic volcanoes, the show has given the globe-conquering Toyota more love than nearly any other model.

It looks as if that won't slow down anytime soon. According to Toyota, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond will once again take to the wheel of a specially-prepared Hilux for an all new challenge.

Just what will that task entail? Toyota is keeping its mouth shut at the moment, and Top Gear isn't typically one for spilling secrets early. Judging by the photos, however, it appears as if the vehicle will need to withstand substantial water crossings and support the trio for at least one night in the wild. Color us excited. Just when we were starting to think that there is nothing on television worth watching, we get our first look at Top Gear series 18. Beyond the jump is a 30 second teaser of the upcoming season, with a glimpse at more episodes filled with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

The cars are there as well, including a very yellow Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, NASCAR Top Gear style and some crazy man who jumps out of a plane with a powered wing attached to his back. Top Gear magazine and Jeremy Clarkson have already let us in on their 2011 care of the year, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque taking the cake from both of them (although Clarkson made the distinction that the best car of 2011 was the BMW 535d M-Sport Touring). A few more TG stars have clocked in to make their assessments, with Hammond choosing the BMW 1 Series M, May selecting the Fisker Karma, The Stig pointing to the BAC Mono, and mag writer Tom Ford laying money on the Morgan 3Wheeler.

Hammond found the 1 Series M perfectly "boisterous," May was smitten with the Karma's future-forward-vegan ethose, namely the fact that it has no animal products, and The Stig's stenographer wrote that the F3-racer-cum-street-legal-maniac BAC Mono is, well, just that. As for the Morgan 3Wheeler, after recounting all the ways it misses the mark as a car, Ford gives those very reasons for it being an awesome experience. We're all for anything Top Gear UK, so we were thrilled to stumble upon this 30-second teaser for the show's trip to India. It appears Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond will be embarking on a trade mission. And yes, you read "trade mission." The UK's big three will apparently attempting to improve Britain's economy by boosting trade with the good people of India.

Of course Jezza, Captain Slow and Hamster are also picking special budget cars for the journey (as demonstrated by the curiously modified Rolls-Royce shown above), and the typical shenanigans are all too likely to ensue. James May and Jeremy Clarkson in China

The Top Gear crew has been spotted filming in China. James May and Jeremy Clarkson have caused a stir in Beijing as they take to the wheel in the newest vehicles available from Chinese automakers.

Judging from the photos that have surfaced so far, it looks like the intrepid duo spent some time in exquisite pieces of engineering like the JAC Binyue and the Greatwall Haval M2, while also taking a look at some of the country's vehicles that ~~infringe on the copyrights of~~ pay tribute to cars manufactured around the globe. That meant taking a gander at hardware like the Smart ForTwo-inspired Shuanghuan Noble, the BMW X5-flavored Shuanghuan SCO and the Mini Cooper-themed Lifan 320.

The episode is likely to surface next season, and we're betting it will feature plenty of insightful commentary from all three of the hosts. 2012 Land Rover Evoque

Top Gear magazine has officially named the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque its Car Of The Year for 2011 after snagging top honors in the SUV category. Perhaps even more impressively, Jeremy Clarkson also named the Evoque his favorite vehicle of 2011. The compact luxury SUV faced off against the likes of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari FF among more common offerings. Top Gear celebrated in classic style by taking the Evoque on an African adventure through the deserts and mountains of Morocco. Sure beats handing an anonymous executive some cheesy trophy on stage.

Readers can find the full tale in any of the magazine's 29 international editions. Clarkson was joined by Richard Hammond, James May, Top Gear magazine editor-in-chief Charlie Turner and the publication's full editorial and road testing staff in picking the 2011 car of the year. Top Gear Eco Special Spoof

For all of its glory, Top Gear can be a bit formulaic. Any given episode likely includes Jeremy Clarkson saying something absurd about one vehicle/ethnicity or another, at least two of the hosts embroiled in a ludicrous challenge and, of course, plenty of quick editing and stunning videography. It's the hosts and the execution that separates Top Gear UK from its various international incarnations and keeps us coming back for more. Two of the show's fans recently demonstrated how easily the recipe can be applied to even the most bizarre premises by pretending to race two electric cars through the streets of London.

The parody, cardboard boxes and all, is genuinely hilarious, and we aren't the only ones who think so. We showed you the video previously, but now Top Gear UK producer Andy Wilman has released a quick video praising the duo for their creativity, which we think is pretty excellent. See this photo? That's a Noble, a McLaren MP4-12C and a Lamborghini Aventador being prepped for taping in Lecce, Italy. And what trio of personalities will be piloting these exotic machines? Top Gear: Bugatti Veyron vs. Eurofighter

Now we might normally be a bit critical of a television series that advertises itself as a greatest hits pastiche. In some ways, it kind of reminds us of those terrible sitcom episodes they used to slap together all the time back in the '80s, with characters "remembering" bits from old episodes. But this is different. This is Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond doing what they do best. This is Top Gear.

How can you not get excited about re-watching clips like "Ferrari Daytona vs. Powerboat" and "Commie Cars" from Season 12? Or "Top Gear vs. Germans" from Season 11? Or "Veyron vs. Eurofighter" from Season 10?

Top Gear at the Movies

Richard Hammond and James May - two of the stars of Top Gear in the UK - have teamed up to film a short trailer on YouTube for an upcoming DVD based on the television show. Naturally, the video revolves around cars, but there's a unique twist: the video is said to celebrate the most memorable automotive moments in cinema history.

We imagine there will be more than a little bit of James Bond action in the film along with a slew of British machinery... not to mention explosions, gunfire and beautiful camera footage. Hammond in India

That zany trio from Top Gear (the original British version, not the spin-offs shot in the "colonies") have been all around the world. They've shot specials in Africa, South America, the Middle East, Vietnam, Japan, Iceland, the North Pole, and even here in the good old U-S-of-A. So where are they now? India.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were spotted by legions of their fans out of the billion inhabitants of India driving around the subcontinent in a convoy of British classics: a Mini, a Jaguar and a Rolls-Royce. Just what kind of challenges the producers have got them performing remains to be seen, but if the previous specials serve as any indication, this should be a good one.

Jeremy Clarkson has let slip what viewers can look forward to in terms of this year's Top Gear Christmas Special. As it turns out, James May, Richard Hammond and the curly-haired host are taking to India for filming this year. At this point, it's unclear exactly what the trio will get up to in the Asian country, but given that Clarkson hasn't had kind things to say about the area in the past, we're all but guaranteed some sort of multi-cultural dust up. Previously, Jezza has called the country's roads a "war zone." Clearly, he hasn't seen what passes for a network of streets in Detroit.

Last year, the Top Gear crew drew the ire of both Muslims and Christians after the trio were filmed wearing the traditional Muslim hijab and depicted the birth of Christ with a baby Stig in a manger. At least they're an equal opportunity offender. My Little Top Gear

We know a few kids who love Britain's Top Gear more than any of the lame cartoon shows on the air (little Ariel, we're looking at you, buddy), but for some tots, those oafish Brits who present the hit BBC program may be a little too scary. Fortunately, an internet denizen has come to the rescue.

In the video after the jump, you'll see some clips from My Little Pony cleverly edited and spliced to sync up with the audio from Top Gear. The opening credits are funny enough on their own, but the video goes on for a good three-and-a-half minutes of Jeremy Clarkson's voice coming out of the most adorable little unicorn... in the world.

Top Gear got in a spot of trouble recently when presenters James May and Jeremy Clarkson were shown parking their Nissan Leaf in a handicapped space. Getting into a spot of trouble is nothing new for Top Gear, and in fact it seems that the show enjoys jumping in and out of hot water while various groups stand up to voice just how offended they feel.

Rather than thumb their noses in the air, however, this latest bout of controversy has forced producer Andy Wilman to step up and steer blame away from the hosts of his show. According to Perth Now, Wilman claims his production team secured special permission to use the handicapped spots, choosing the spaces in question because they were quiet. Also, Wilman notes that three other handicapped spots remained open and available for use during the shoot. Should the spots have filled up, Wilman maintains that production would've cleared the area to allow for others to use the spots.

Both May and Clarkson reportedly expressed concern over the use of the spots before the shoot. Wilman assured the men that the handicapped logos would not be seen in the footage, but they still made it onto the screen. That's both his and the production team's fault, and Wilman wishes to apologize to anyone who was offended. He also wants to make sure that everyone concerned understands it was not a decision made by Captain Slow or Jezza.

When Top Gear said that, "In the real world, [the Tesla Roadster] doesn't seem to work," the electric automaker responded with a lawsuit. Nissan is taking a different tack, putting a clever twist on the one-sided, anti-EV message that the British television show keeps broadcasting about the faults of plug-in vehicles. In the town of Lincoln, where presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May supposedly ran out of juice in a Nissan Leaf (it was all staged), Nissan will install two charging points, one dedicated to each of the TV stars.

The EVSE - a PodPoint charging unit - will be put in the downtown area and the two sockets, will "allow both Jeremy and James to recharge their batteries at the same time." How kind.

When the chaps aren't around, other plug-in vehicle drivers will be able to charge for free at the station, something that the local government representatives are obviously pleased about (as you can read in the statement after the jump). The station should be operational by the end of August, and Nissan says it is going to invite May and Clarkson to be the first to plug in there. That's an event we look forward to seeing on an episode of Top Gear right about... never.

Jeremy Clarkson gets a push in a Nissan Leaf

We're not into spoiling the on-screen antics that make Top Gear one of the greatest automotive shows ever, but we're not gonna let slide the fact that the BBC aired last Sunday the much-anticipated Top Gear episode in which Jeremy Clarkson and James May embark on a journey in the Nissan Leaf and Peugeot iOn.

Yes, the Top Gear duo ragged on the Leaf and iOn after the vehicles were intentionally discharged in order to highlight the difficulties of charging electric vehicles in a municipality with no public charging stations (read Nissan's official response to the show's battery-depleting antics), but both Clarkson and May did have some positive words to say for the Leaf and iOn. Take, for example, Clarkson admitting the Leaf drove much like a conventional vehicle and May comparing the iOn to a Porsche 911.

Top Gear has taken heat, mainly from UK-based news outlet The Times, for its portrayal of electric vehicles on the show. Tesla even sued the BBC after its Roadster made its appearance on Top Gear in 2008. Andy Wilman, executive producer of the show, responded to critics today, saying that at no point did the Top Gear hosts test the claimed range of the Nissan Leaf, nor did they suggest that "the vehicles wouldn't achieve their claimed range." Wilman had more to say, which you can read here, but need we really remind anyone that Top Gear is pure entertainment with just a dash of factuality.

There's just no telling what sort of trouble the zany hosts of Top Gear will get into next. Recent months have seen Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond garner the ire of at least two world religions and an entire nation among other offenses. As you'd expect, the antics of the BBC trio don't look to be slowing anytime soon.

Clarkson has recently caused two stirs on separate occasions, first by parking in a handicap spot on TV and second by joking that he had a cancer scare at one point during his life. May also parked in a disabled space while the two were discussing the merits and drawbacks of two electric cars - a Nissan Leaf and a Peugeot iOn in the episode of Top Gear that aired in Blighty over the weekend.

The shot drew sharp criticism from awareness groups.

Clarkson's cancer comments came from his newspaper column, and the controversial comment arrived on the heels of BBC DJ Chris Evans recently announcing that he'd had a few growths removed from his bowel after a routine checkup. Clarkson joked that his doctors had found cancer in his bowels, too, but he hadn't had time to have the growths removed. Evans' father died from bowel cancer.

Richard Hammond Top Gear

Whether you love Top Gear USA or think it an affront to comedic decency, one thing's certain: the show seems to have helped spawn a new wave of car-themed programming. Adam Carolla's The Car Show has taken to the air as a result of The History Channel's move into fuel-soaked entertainment, and now The BBC is striking back. The Beeb has announced that Richard Hammond will be getting his own show on BBC America soon. Called Hard Drive with Richard Hammond, the program uses a similar format as the UK's World's Toughest Driving Tests.

Hammond will travel around the United States, driving and competing in some of the toughest vehicles our country has to offer. We're sure he'll meet some genuine characters along the way as well.

Hammond isn't the only Top Gear presenter being awarded an American show. James May will also take to BBC America with James May's Man Lab U.S. based on the UK version of his program. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Richard Hammond loves Porsche, that's no secret. Apparently, James May is a fan as well, and both Top Gear presenters recently arrived to the set in their 911 coupes. May took the opportunity to explain why his Porsche is superior to the one Hammond owns and someone was kind enough to film it.
