Ah, Europe: The land of forbidden wagons. Automakers like Cadillac and Acura may have taken a chance and brought out new wagons in the United States over the past few years, but it doesn't mean that the Yankee market will be flooded with useful premium cargo-haulers anytime soon. A shame, too, since Jaguar's new XF Sportbrake is an estate we'd love to see parked at Autoblog Towers. She's pretty.

We love the look of the refreshed-for-2012 XF, and thankfully, none of the cat's sleekness has been tainted with the addition of a larger hind quarters. The car goes on sale in Europe in the third quarter of 2012 with a choice of two diesel engines measuring 2.2 and 3.0 liters. Either powerplant is matched with an eight-speed automatic and sends its power exclusively to the rear wheels.

Jaguar may be in no rush to bring diesel variants to the United States for anything more than a cross-country demo run. But overseas the marque's oil-burning selection keeps growing. The XF is already available in its home market with a 190-horsepower 2.2-liter diesel four, not to mention a 3.0-liter diesel V6 with 240 or 275 horsepower. But if those weren't frugal enough, Jaguar has now introduced an even more cost-effective alternative.

The same 2.2-liter diesel four can now be had in a cheaper 163-horsepower trim for a grand less, at £29,950 on-the-road price (OTR, inclusive of the 20% Value Added Tax). Considering, however, that - at 9.8 seconds - the new version takes more than a second longer to reach 62 mph from a standstill (compared to the 190hp's 8.5-second run), yet returns the same 52.3 mpg combined rating on the UK scale, we're not sure the cheaper price makes this a good value.

What the new diesel spec does offer, however, is an intriguing id to the XFR's ego: Compared to the top-of-the-line supercharged model's £65,350 OTR price, 22.5 mpg UK combined rating and 4.9 second sprint to 62, the bottom of the range is now less than half the price off the top, gets more than twice the fuel economy, and takes twice as long to reach highway speeds. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Jaguar rolls out cheaper diesel for XF

Jaguar rolls out cheaper diesel for XF originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 08:28:00 EST.
With the X-Type standing as a rare exception, for the entirety of its history, Jaguar has meant rear-wheel drive. Want drive at all four corners? That's what its sister brand, Land Rover, has been for. But not everyone who wants luxury with foul weather prowess wants an SUV. In fact, a growing number of luxury sedan buyers look for power channeled to all four wheels, and Jaguar apparently thinks it can no longer afford to sit by and watch those buyers go to the likes of Audi (with its iconic Quattro models), BMW (with its xDrive offerings) and Mercedes-Benz (which offers 4Matic on several models).

As a result, a new story from Autocar indicates that Jaguar is preparing to launch all-wheel drive versions of the XF and /or XJ sedans. The move is targeted specifically at "the snowbelt of America," where Jaguar reportedly believes all-wheel-drive vehicles account for some 70 percent of sales.

The development of an all-wheel drive system is likely being conducted in conjunction with Land Rover, and is expected to arrive within the next two years. The project is being given a higher priority than the development of hybrid propulsion, since Jaguar estimates that its buyers are more willing to pony up for an extra set of driving wheels than a battery pack and a pair of electric motors.
Jaguar to launch all-wheel-drive sedans within two years originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 11:30:00 EST.
It's not every day that you see a diesel Jaguar XF on these shores. In fact, at least officially, there's only one. And it just completed a cross-country road trip that took it from New York to Los Angeles.

The trip kicked off last week in the Big Apple and just wrapped up earlier this week in LA. Over the course of the eight-day journey across eleven states, three time zones and 2,884 miles, the bone-stock XF with the 2.2-liter diesel four averaged a highly impressive 62.9 miles per gallon (even better than the previous European tour), hitting a peak of 67 mpg as it approached the West Coast.

Not too shabby, especially for a luxury sedan that is, at the end of the day, anything but a lightweight. Check out the updated image gallery to see how the oil-burning Jag progressed, and follow the jump for the official press release.
Continue reading Jaguar completes coast-to-coast U.S. road trip in diesel XF

Jaguar completes coast-to-coast U.S. road trip in diesel XF originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 09:01:00 EST.
The first diesel Jaguar XF has arrived in the United States. But it's not destined for a showroom, and it's not headed to a waiting customer. No, Jaguar has slightly more ambitious plans for this particular oil-burning sedan.

The 2.2-liter diesel four will propel this XF on a cross-country journey that will take it from New York to Los Angeles - a trip across eleven states covering 2,800 miles - over the course of seven days. The goal is to see how far the car can travel on a single tank of fuel, and follows a similar exercise undertaken in Europe that took a different XF diesel across 816 miles from Castle Bromwich in the UK to Munich, Germany, on a single tank, returning an average of 57 miles per gallon on the EU cycle.

Observers can track this trip's progress on the company's Facebook page and Twitter feed, and we'll be sure to report on the venture's results once it's reached the Pacific coast. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Jaguar driving diesel XF across the U.S.

Jaguar driving diesel XF across the U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 07:57:00 EST.
When is a Jaguar XFR not a Jaguar XFR? When it's an XFR-S, that's when. So while this vehicle may look like your standard supercharged Jaguar sedan, it's actually a British rocket aimed - in a bit of role reversal - squarely at Germany.

Spied undergoing development work at Jaguar's test center near the Nürburgring, this test mule looks pretty much like the XFR you can already get from your local Jag dealer. But our sources on the ground tell us it sounds more like the XKR-S, the 550-horsepower super-coupe seen running alongside it.

Though the prototype pictured lacks the exterior visual cues that would go along with the anticipated engine swap, the telltale exhaust bellow tells us the likes of the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG had better take notice.
Jaguar XFR-S snapped gunning for M5 territory at the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST.
If you're a fan of the latest design direction at Jaguar and of station wagons, we had some potential good news for you last week. That's when reports indicated that the British automaker was proceeding with plans to make a long-roofed version of its XF sedan. Now it seems the news is only getting better.

In follow-up reports, Jaguar's design director Ian Callum suggests that the wagon - excuse us, "Sport Break" - will include an XFR version (yes, we're hoping Jaguar spells it "Sport Brake," too). That means the same 510-horsepower turbo eight as the XFR sedan and XKR coupe and convertible. And that's some very good news indeed, particularly for those looking to trounce the odd Porsche 911 off the line with the whole family on board.
Jaguar's upcoming Sport Break to include XFR version? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 11:01:00 EST.
An automaker can't make it in the fringe anymore. Everything's going either upmarket or mainstream, and Jaguar has opted primarily for the latter. The company that not so long ago offered essentially one sedan and one two-door is rapidly expanding to a full lineup. So what's the next step? According to the rumormeisters over at Autocar, it's ditching its current model naming strategy.

According to the UK publication, Jaguar is preparing to jettison nameplates like XJ and XF in favor of a more conventional alphanumeric system like those employed by its German and Japanese rivals. The thinking is that while the faithful know Coventry's naming system, it's not immediately evident to newcomers and outsiders where one model sits in the line-up vis-a-vis the next. Besides, it won't be the first time Jag has slapped alphanumeric badges like XJ8 on the flanks of its cars.

One model could possibly hold out, though, as the C-X75 heads down the road to production. Filling the shoes of the iconic XJ220, the company is reportedly toying with the idea of naming the new supercar XJ330. The original was named for the 220 mph top speed it was aimed to reach (but never did), and the new model is targeted to hit a more realistic 205 mph - or 330 km/h on the metric scale.
Jaguar to ditch current nameplates for alphanumeric badges? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 14:30:00 EST.
A photo purported to be a sneak peak at the facelifted 2012 Jaguar XF has hit the Web ahead of its New York Auto Show debut, and while there's precious little information about where the photo came from, if it's legit, this is exactly in line with what we're expecting the next XF to look like.

The sharper headlights on the car pictured above look consistent with the camouflaged versions seen in spy shots, so there's a solid chance this is the real deal. Underneath the XF's reshaped skin will be a new eight-speed automatic gearbox from ZF backing up a 2.2-liter diesel four-pot pulling down 187 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. That same transmission will likely be fitted to the U.S.-spec models packing the 5.0-liter V8, possibly in both naturally aspirated and supercharged R guise. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

There are major auto shows, and there are relatively minor ones. Holland's AutoRAI may fall more into the latter category, but that doesn't mean it can't have its fare share of new debuts. And a big part of those are reportedly coming from Jaguar.

Say what you will about the wisdom of decisions taken in Europe's notoriously mind-altering playground, but as we already reported, Jaguar has apparently chosen the Amsterdam expo as the location to elaborate on the future of its X-Type successor. But the company's English manners prevent it from turning up empty-handed with only some promises of things to come, so it's created a special series specifically for the Dutch market.

Called the Designer Edition, it's available on either the XF or the XJ, powered by the 3.0-liter V6 engine, and decked out in Stratus Grey London paint - looks decidedly greenish to us - with tan leather interior and piano black lacquer trim. The XF Designer Edition is further distinguished by bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels in grey or black, heater leather steering wheels and sports seats and heated windshield. The XJ Designer Edition, meanwhile, packs a infotainment system with Bowers & Wilkins audio, high-def dual-view touchscreen and TV tuner plus a leather headliner.

Only 20 units of each are slated for production, the former coming in at €77,790 ($110,000 by current rates), the latter at €121,290 ($171,000). Just don't forget where you parked yours.

Jaguar has announced a new 2.2-liter diesel engine capable of 187 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque that can also travel 52.3 miles per gallon in the combined European cycle as fitted to a prototype of its 2012 XF sedan. The engine will also have little trouble meeting Europe's stringent CO2 regulations, as The Leaping Cat claims the engine only emits 149 g/km of CO2.

On the technology front, this new 16 valve common-rail diesel features a water-cooled turbocharger, low friction pistons, a fresh crankshaft and new injectors. Jaguar engineers also fitted a new oil pan and new electronic systems to allow for an intelligent Stop-Start system that operates more efficiently. The efficient little motor will work in concert with an also new eight-speed ZF transmission. Jaguar claims the diminutive diesel will propel the XF to 60 miles per hour in 8.5, while promising a top speed of 140 miles per hour.

As an added bonus, the folks at Jaguar were kind enough to pass us high-resolution photos of the refreshed XF undergoing testing. The camo is quite good, though we can see some alterations to the lower air dams, and we're guessing tail lamps, headlamps and the grille have also been given a once-over.

Jaguar says in the post-jump press release that the 2.2 diesel will make its way under the bonnet of a future XF production car, with "an estimated on-sale date being announced at the New York Auto Show." Keep in mind that the Big Apple show is international in scope, so assuming that a U.S. announcement means it will be sold here probably isn't a good idea. Hit the jump to read over the Jaguar press release.
Jaguar has been mulling the idea of taking another stab at the venerable BMW 3 Series after its last attempt, the underwhelming X-Type, failed in spectacular fashion. This is the other stab.

The Jagaur B99 concept is a team effort between Jag and Bertone and serves as way for Bertone to celebrate its 99th Anniversary. The new compact Jag's name is a melding of the company's first initial and its age.

Bertone says the concept is a design study in what it calls "dynamic imbalance" between parallel lines and "leaping forms."

It represents not only Bertone's new direction and a possible answer to the ubiquitous 3 Series, but a big leap in terms of technology. The B99 is powered by an all-new extended-range hybrid drivetrain designed by Bertone to run on two electric motors whose batteries can draw a charge from a small onboard engine. Bertone says they've been looking into sustainable energies for the last two decades and the B99 is the top of that evolution chain.

Bertone also presented a race car iteration of the B99 Concept (inset, right), saying it is working on a GT2 version of the B99 in hopes of proving the car is not just a pretty face.
Jaguar is looking to expand on its existing lineup of vehicles. Currently, Leaping Cat buyers can choose from variants on the two-door XK, four-door XF and flagship XJ sedan. A two-door, four-passenger XJ-based coupe is reportedly in the works and will take aim at the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. Also apparently being discussed is a shooting-brake based on the XF and an entry-level crossover based on the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

According to Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director for Jaguar, crossovers will be a definite part of the automaker's future. Besides the proposed entry-level Evoque-based CUV, Jaguar is considering another crossover based on the Range Rover Sport.

Does a Jaguar crossover make sense? If you're Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's Global Brand Director, it certainly does. Speaking to Autocar, Hallmark said that Jaguar "needs a crossover and needs to stop being a saloon-based company." We're a bit confused as to exactly why Jaguar needs a CUV when the typical Jaguar shopper could easily afford something from the Land Rover showroom.

Hallmark adds that a Jaguar XF wagon will appear shortly. That, we like, but with Jaguar making noise about a crossover, we find it hard to imagine an XF station wagon ever rolling into US showrooms. Hallmark goes on to say that lightweight cars will become part of the brand's future DNA.

Wait, so how does this crossover fit in with the brand again?

Jaguar's current styling language alienated some who were enamored with the previous classical design, while others (ourselves included) greeted the more avant-garde approach as a much-needed breath of fresh air. To enhance Jag's new design, the automaker has just released this Black Pack appearance kit for the XF sedan, and might we say, meow.

Following the success of a similar package - launched alongside the Speed Pack - on the XKR, Jaguar's Black Pack brings anthracite-finish 20-inch alloys and glossy black trim to replace the chrome around the windows and grille. Small tweaks, yes, but even these slight adjustments give an already-pretty sedan some extra touches of hotness.

Jaguar has yet to announce if this treatment will be available on North American-spec XFs, as the Black Pack is currently only available in Europe. This appearance package can only be had on white, black, grey, silver or blue models across the XF range, plus the shades of blue and red exclusive to the XFR. Buyers of the less aggressive models, however, can also opt for the XF Aerodynamic Pack that ports over some of the XFR's more sporty aero bits. Check it out up close in the high-res image gallery below and read the full details in the press release after the jump.

It feels like Jaguar's renaissance has only just begun, and here's the sedan that started it all, already prepping for its own renaissance. The Jaguar XF, in line to be fitted with some tailoring taken from the XJ's handsome suit of sheetmetal, was caught again stretching its legs in the desert. The exterior changes won't be radical, but expect a smattering of fascia work and some tweaking of lines and light clusters out back, along with some revised and refined interior elements.

Stephanie Rice was crying when she apologized on television, but was probably crying even more when she had to hand back the keys of her complimentary Jaguar XF. The Australian triple-gold-medalist swimmer was apologizing for ostensibly off-hand remarks made via Twitter following an international rugby competition, remarks that have reportedly cost her a sponsorship deal with the British automaker's Australian arm.

According to Inside Line, after watching the Australian Wallabies rugby team - a member of which with whom Rice is reportedly romantically involved - defeat the South African Springboks, she reportedly derided the vanquished rivals as "faggots" in a Tweet on the popular social media portal. Rice subsequently apologized for her remarks, but Jaguar Australia evidently felt the association was no longer in their best interests and have terminated her deal as a result.

2011 Jaguar XJ - Click above for high-res image gallery

The turnaround at Jaguar/Land Rover is happening even faster than the company's owner, Tata, had planned. A year ago, JLR posted a net loss of £64 million ($101M U.S.) in Q2; compare that to this year's second quarter and its £233.8 million ($369M U.S.) net profit on 57,135 vehicles sold.

While we're sure they aren't complaining, the boost has left JLR in bit of a lurch: production has bottlenecked because it needs more engines from Ford, after already buying "considerably more" than it expected. Ford hasn't offered any comment, but it is reported that the two companies are working together to figure out how to get Jaguar the powerplants it needs.

Jaguar's new 5.0-liter V8 has seen its fair share of praise since its introduction, but even the best petrol mill is worthless without fuel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website indicates that 5,048 of the automaker's 2010 and 2011 XF and XK models equipped with the 5.0-liter engine are being recalled for a faulty fuel pump relay.

The problem can reportedly occur if the in-tank electronic fuel pump isn't properly activated when the fuel pump relay is energized at vehicle start-up. When this happens, the engine could receive inadequate amounts of fuel, resulting in the vehicle abruptly stalling with little or no warning, which would potentially result in an unscheduled (is there another kind?) accident.

Beginning August 30 of this year (or possibly earlier) owners of affected vehicles can simply take their faulty cat to the nearest Jaguar store for a free software update that should fix the issue. Hit the jump to read over the NHTSA press release.

With the all the news coming out of Jaguar, it's obvious its Indian parents are intent on making the leaping cat a credible competitor to the world's luxury automakers. To wit: not only has Jag green-lit the XE - a next-generation XK-based competitor to the Porsche Boxster - it ready to take the fight to the BMW 3 Series in the form of a reborn X-Type.

While the previous Mondeo-based X-Type fared poorly during its run, Tata Motor's chief executive, Carl-Peter Forster, told Automobilwoche that in order for the British brand to compete on a global scale, a smaller sedan is a requirement. To that end, a new sedan is under development to slot in below the XF, likely utilizing a new aluminum architecture based on its next-generation sedan.

In addition to X-Type replacement and the new, smaller coupe - rumored to arrive in 2012 - Forster says that work is underway on a long-wheelbase version of the XF for the Chinese market and a wagon version of Jag's mid-size sedan is slated for sale in Europe (XFR estate, anyone?).

On the Land Rover front, the recently revealed Evoque is the first of three new products to debut in the next five years, including an all-new Freelander with seating for seven and a revised Defender which is set to arrive in 2015.
