Power</a> has become a household name thanks to the organization's yearly awards based on in-depth consumer surveys about all manner of goods and services. In the automotive industry, manufacturers constantly struggle to best each other for top honors, and that struggle has helped push the industry toward ever-better quality. But as <em>Ward's Auto</em> points out, few people know the man behind the name.<br />

James David Power III began licensing manufacturers to use his award in advertisements in 1986, two years after <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru\">Subaru</a> dropped the J.D. Power name in a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/super bowl">Super Bowl</a> ad.<br />
<br />
In 2005, Power sold J.D. Power and Associates to publishing giant McGraw-Hill, but stayed on with the company until 2009. Even after his departure, <em>Ward's Auto</em> says Power is proud of the empire he helped build. While outlets like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/consumer reports"><em>Consumer Reports</em></a> have gained a substantial following, the organization only polls its own subscribers, while J.D. Power takes its data from a larger cross section of consumers.<br />
<br />
Using a separate operation to keep conflicts of interest at bay, companies must pay a fee to be able to use the J.D. Power name in their ads. Yet J.D. Power is not without controversy - auto companies pay substantial fees for access to its various quality metrics and counsel, leading critics to suggest there's a conflict of interest in having a quality auditor paid by the very companies it monitors. In addition, critics note that the company's much ballyhooed Initial Quality Study <a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/features/the-trouble-with-jd-powers-initial-quality-study-feature">isn't purely a study of manufacturing defects</a>, but rather an arcane formula that mixes actual owner problems with design flaws (think: cupholders that can't hold a Venti Frappucino from Starbucks). As most consumers are likely to equate the idea of quality with a product free of problems, the thought is that this is somewhat misleading methodology.<br />

When it comes to handing out awards, nobody works harder than <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jd+power/">J.D. Power</a>. With surveys concocted to measure <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/16/jd-power-reports-vehicle-dependability-has-substantially-improve/">dependability</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/27/j-d-power-more-car-buyers-base-purchases-on-brand-reputation-t/">brand reputation</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/15/hyundai-tops-j-d-powers-customer-retention-study/">customer retention</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/24/2011-j-d-power-initial-quality-report-praises-lexus-honda-pan/">quality</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/22/automakers-suck-at-ui/">whatever else the company can dream up</a>, we sometimes wonder whether the company's plaudits aren't becoming a little like "participant" medals awarded at the end of kids' sports seasons.<br />
<br />
This latest J.D. Power survey, the 2012 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/17/lexus-mini-top-j-d-power-customer-service-survey/">Customer Service Index</a>, measures service satisfaction at dealerships. The most interesting find is that overall satisfaction at dealers is nearly four percent greater than at independent repair facilities. Visits to dealers among owners of vehicles less than three years old are up as well.<br />
<br />
Of course, the numbers that people will be most interested in relate to how each brand fared in the survey. J.D. Power ranks each marque on a 1,000-point scale, "based on dealer service performance during the first three years of new-vehicle ownership, which typically represents the majority of the vehicle warranty period. Five measures are examined to determine overall customer satisfaction with dealer service (listed in order of importance): service quality; service initiation; service advisor; service facility; and vehicle pick-up."<br />
<br />
The brands are broken into either luxury or mainstream categories, and the top performers in each list are clustered fairly close together. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> scored 861 points, followed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac/">Cadillac</a> (852) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/">Jaguar</a> (849) on the luxury side. The mass market competitors finished even closer, with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mini/">Mini</a> leading at 809 points, followed closely by three <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gm/">General Motors</a> brands: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/buick/">Buick</a> (805), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gmc/">GMC</a> (803) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> (801).<br />

Remember the days of planned obsolescence? They're over. The latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jd+power/">J.D. Power</a> Vehicle Dependability Study shows a 13-percent improvement in new car dependability over the first three years of ownership. The latest sample of 2009 model year vehicles shows the lowest rate of problems since the study's inception in 1990.<br />
<br />
The big winner was the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/ls/">Lexus LS</a>, which had the fewest reported problems in the study. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/">Lexus</a> was the highest rated brand as well, followed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac/">Cadillac</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/scion/">Scion</a>. J.D. Power says 25 of 32 automotive brands showed improved dependability, with six declining and one remaining the same.<br />
<br />
While J.D. Power was pleased to see automakers producing high quality cars despite the economic disaster unfolding around them three years ago, it did note that some brands are still not getting credit for building reliable vehicles. "During the past four years, models from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/buick/">Buick</a>, Cadillac, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/">Hyundai</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lincoln/">Lincoln</a> have achieved consistently strong levels of dependability," the company's release stated, "but still have relatively high proportions of new-vehicle buyers expressing reliability concerns."<br />

Reputation is everything, according to a new survey by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jd+power/">J.D. Power and Associates</a>. The 2012 Avoider Study found that 43 percent of buyers who steer clear of a particular model due to quality concerns do so merely because of common knowledge. Ratings and reviews - <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/reviews/">our stock in trade</a> - were cited by 38 percent, while previous ownership of a model caused scorn in only 14 percent of respondents.<br />
<br />
"The fact that so many new-vehicle buyers may be basing their opinions about quality and reliability on pre-conceived [sic] notions, rather than concrete information or data, demonstrates how important it is for automakers to promote the quality and reliability of their models," said Jon Osborn, research director at J.D. Power and Associates, in what reads like a nakedly self-serving press release.<br />
<br />
Other interesting data from the survey included an all-time high for xenophobia, with respondents who avoided import models because of their origin rising to 14 percent, the highest in the nine years of the study. Buyers avoiding domestics for the same reason dropped to six percent, the lowest in the study's history.<br />
<br />
The most influential reason for purchasing a specific model in 2012 was fuel economy, trumping reliability, "the deal," and exterior styling, which were tops in 2010.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/24/2011-j-d-power-initial-quality-report-praises-lexus-honda-pan/">taken it on the chin from J.D. Power</a> since the carmaker rolled out its new MyFord Touch system in the 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/explorer/">Explorer</a>. Ford's ranking in the influential Initial Quality Survey dropped from fifth last year all the way down to 23rd, in large measure because of customer dissatisfaction with the new technology and its voice recognition interface, but also because of refinement complaints about the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fiesta/">Fiesta</a>. But unlike, say, the Houston Cougars, who plummeted in the Bowl Championship Series rankings after getting blown out in the Conference USA title game this weekend, Ford can make a pretty good case that it's getting jobbed.<br />
<br />
The traditional definition of quality when it comes to new cars and trucks has been based on those vehicles being free of defects. But in the last few years, the tide has been turning, in large measure because J.D. Power is increasingly weighing customer complaints related to design and, in particular, new electronic technology. <em>Car and Driver</em> paints the complaints that have dogged Ford among the latter, suggesting that these are less valid quality metrics than something like a poorly assembled door panel.<br />
<br />
The venerable buff book doesn't stop at defending Ford, however, cautioning against what it sees as a trend "toward the lowest-common-denominator solutions to reduce design 'problems.'" Citing examples like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/">BMW</a> moving its cruise control from a separate stalk to buttons on the steering wheel to appease whining customers and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a> getting dinged on IQS for using brake pads that generate too much dust, C/D doesn't say it outright, but certainly implies that J.D. For those of us testing dozens of in-car navigation and infotainment systems each year, J.D. Power's 2011 U.S. Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study comes as no surprise.<br />
<br />
According to owners surveyed in the study, simplicity and ease-of-use are lacking in the majority of systems on the market, with "Address/street/city not found" topping the list, followed by difficulty inputting a destination, poor routing, ineffectual voice controls, a lack of street names and missing points of interest. Not to mention the most obvious issue: the inability to find the proper function in the menu system.<br />
<br />
Additionally, with a growing number of automakers combining climate controls into the touchscreen, these systems are adding another layer of complexity with few tangible benefits.<br />
<br />
Interestingly though, the Garmin-supplied system fitted to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/dodge/charger/">Dodge Charger</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/300/">Chrysler 300</a> - placing first and third, respectively, in consumer satisfaction - do combine many of the vehicle's climate control functions in a separate menu on the screen. So the issue isn't about incorporation, it's about execution.<br />
<br />
Lining the bottom of the pack were a few <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> models (no surprise considering how long in the tooth COMAND is), the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/xj/">Jaguar XJ</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volvo/xc90/">Volvo XC90</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lincoln/mkx/">Lincoln MKX</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/rav4/">Toyota RAV4</a>. And while the Clarion-equipped system (in the process of being phased out) in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/flex/">Ford Flex</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fusion/">Fusion</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lincoln/mks/">Lincoln MKS</a> all made it into the top 10, the TeleNav versions of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/explorer/">Ford Explorer</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/edge/">Edge</a> - yes, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/MyFordTouch/">MyFord Touch</a> equipped models - landed near the bottom. While <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/">Nissan</a> has never enjoyed the same stellar reputation for quality as its Japanese compatriots at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/">Honda</a>, it has lately found itself in danger of acquiring the opposite rep. Nissan's performance on influential J.D. Power quality and dependability studies has been below average lately, as many of its rivals have improved. Nissan will be launching a new quality plan in November, but<em> Automotive News</em> has the scoop today.<br />
<br />
The most immediate change in Nissan's quality approach is a shoot-the-messenger measure requiring dealers to present car buyers with a two-page quick-reference guide that's part of 2012 owner manuals. The manual insert will seek to address some of the common threads that have cropped up in J.D. Power survey results. Nissan will also be addressing some of the most frequent customer complaints, like poor shift quality from its new seven-speed automatic transmissions used in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/">Infiniti</a> products. Nissan tells AN that it is already upgrading the software in the transmissions.<br />
<br />
While that's a start, Nissan has a long way to go to hit its stated goal of having both Nissan and Infiniti brands in J.D. Power's top three in their respective categories by 2016. Nissan ranked just 24th in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/24/2011-j-d-power-initial-quality-report-praises-lexus-honda-pan/">Initial Quality Survey released in June</a>, and managed only 25th in the Vehicle Dependability Survey, according to AN.<br />
<br />
Other issues that have bothered Nissan customers include difficulties with HVAC controls, confusing rear wiper controls, and using hands-free phone systems. Kazumasa Katoh, Senior Vice President of Global Quality, said that these kinds of customer complaints are the result of Nissan customers' embrace of new technology, which can be complicated.<br />

We've heard this line rather often, ever since <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> saw its J.D. Power scores plummet almost a decade ago. Yet automakers seem to continue to struggle in designing in-car systems that are simple and intuitive. J.D. Power loves to know what you think about new cars and the companies that make them. One of their annual reports is called the APEAL study, which looks at automotive performance, execution and layout, and this analytic look at makes and models is tallied up within a 1,000-point scale. The average score for the entire industry currently sits at 781, which is an improvement over last year's average of 778.<br />
<br />
Sitting at the top of the APEAL scoreboard for the seventh year in a row is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a>, with a rating of 879. It's not surprising to see the German automaker sit in the pole position, but a few other automakers have made vertically positive moves. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/">Hyundai</a> earned 793 points this year, which is a 33-point improvement over the 2010 study and puts the Korean automaker well above the industry average.<br />
<br />
Other major winners are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jeep/">Jeep</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/">Chrysler</a>. Jeep jumped 32 points for a 2011 score of 759, and Chrysler climbed 27 points, to 775.<br />

The calendar has kicked over to summer, and that means <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/j.d.+power">J.D. Power</a> has just updated its Initial Quality report. The 2011 edition of the IQS is a bit surprising, mostly because the quality of new model launches has been trending upward since 2007 for the entire industry on average. The tune has changed for 2011, as J.D. Power notes the first quality decline in four years, though it notes that carryover models performed better than ever - it's the new models that are drawing complaints. It's not all bad news, though, as a few automakers have managed to stand out from the competition:<br />

According to the study, which tracks buyer satisfaction after 90 days of ownership, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda">Honda</a> is a notable leader in quality, and its lineup shares seven awards for specific models. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/accord">Accord</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/accord+crosstour">Accord Crosstour</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/civic">Civic</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/element">Element</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/fit">Fit</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/insight">Insight</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ridgeline">Ridgeline</a> all receive recognition from J.D. Power. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus">Lexus</a> isn't too far behind Honda, with four models getting the 2011 IQS thumbs up. Lexus also leads automakers in across-the-line quality, with Honda, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/acura">Acura</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz">Mercedes-Benz</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mazda">Mazda</a> chugging along right behind. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> showed strong signs of a comeback, motoring all the way from 21st place in 2010 back up to 7th place. Another item of note, is that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/land+rover">Land Rover</a> made a major leap in quality, and has reduced quality issues by 47 problem per every 100 vehicles.<br />

According to JDP, the leading reasons noted for a drop in quality includes growing consumer dissatisfaction with engine/transmission issues and audio/navigation matters. Chief among those who were dinged by both factors is Ford, which <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/03/mulally-facing-pressure-to-fix-ford-fix-tech-and-quality-glitche/">drew black marks for its complex MyFordTouch/Sync technologies</a>, along with its PowerShift dual clutch transmission behavior. The technology updates saw <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> plummet from 5th place overall (first among non-premium marques) to 23rd place out of 32 brands.<br />

<a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> has had its share of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/30/fords-second-gen-sync-system-off-to-a-buggy-start/">quality issues</a> with its fledgling <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/myford touch">MyFord Touch</a> technology, and watchdogs like <em>Consumer Reports</em> and J.D. Power have taken notice. <em>Bloomberg</em> reports that Ford CEO Alan Mulally is all too aware of the automaker's latest technology glitches, saying, "We've had just a few issues with some technologies associated with Sync and MyFord Touch."<br />

The "just a few issues" Mulally is referring to include reports of touchscreens blacking out, general complaints about a steep learning curve and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/05/10/optima-beats-camry-accord-in-cr-test-altima-still-favorite-ex/">recent crossover ranking</a> by <em>Consumer Reports</em> that placed the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/explorer/">2011 Explorer</a> 17th out of 19 vehicles tested due in large part to the tech. CR also dropped the coveted "Recommended" nod for the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/edge/">2011 Edge</a> because of MyFord Touch.<br />

Mulally's recent statements come just before the release of J.D. Power's June 23 new car quality report. J.D. Power's VP Dave Sargent claims the automaker's own data shows that quality has taken a hit, adding that Ford is "making an early warning to the market that this may be a problem." There is no telling how car buyers would react to Ford slipping a bit in the rankings, but the company's stellar performance in the study over the past few years has likely been a major reason why the Blue Oval managed to re-pass <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> on the sales charts.<br />
<br />
Ford isn't taking the potential quality issues lightly, recently spending $100 million to deploy laser-guided robots in 17 factories to help reduce wind noise in its automobiles. The robots will enable Ford to install doors to within one tenth of one millimeter of specification. J.D. Power and Associates has released its annual Vehicle Dependability Study for 2011, and there are a few surprises in store for those who religiously keep track of who outperforms who on the automotive reliability front. For the first time ever, <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/lincoln">Lincoln</a>, with 101 problems per 100 vehicles, leads the chart, followed by <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/lexus">Lexus</a> with a score of 109.<br />
<br />
Number three on the list is also something of a surprise: <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/jaguar">Jaguar</a>, who's score of 112 problems per 100 vehicles seemingly proves not all leaping kitties leave unwanted presents outside the confines of their litter boxes. <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/porsche">Porsche</a> (114) and <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/toyota">Toyota</a> (122) round out the top five. The industry average comes in at 151 problems per 100 vehicles, which of course means that some brands perform rather poorly in J.D. Power's rankings.<br />
<br />
Bringing up the rear in this year's study is <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/mini">Mini</a>, with 221 problems per 100 vehicles. That's not good. BMW's smallest brand is followed by <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/jeep">Jeep</a> (214), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/land-rover/">Land Rover</a> (212), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/dodge">Dodge</a> (206) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler">Chrysler</a> (202). The study also ranks individual models in each category, and Toyota's seven individual segment victories gives the Japanese automaker more individual victories than any other brand.<br />

A brief explanation of how this particular study is compiled: <span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_PressRelease1_lblPR">J.D. Power polled </span><span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_PressRelease1_lblPR">43,700 original owners on</span><span id="ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_mainPH_PressRelease1_lblPR"> problems experienced during the past 12 months on 2008 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership.</span> As such, this study is not ranking the latest vehicles by any given manufacturer, but is instead intended to help consumers predict the durability of a potential automobile purchase.<br />

Power and Associates has just released the results of its latest customer service survey. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus">Lexus</a> managed to take home the luxury crown for greatest customer satisfaction in the service department while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mini">Mini</a> snagged top honors among mass-market brands. According to J.D. Power, one of the biggest factors that can influence how buyers feel about their service experience is whether or not their dealership aggressively tries to upsell maintenance agreements. The Consumer Service Index study rates dealership experience on a 1,000-point scale, and J.D. Power reports that the difference between an owner who feels that he's been upsold and one that doesn't could equate to a 140 point separation in final score.<br />

Interestingly enough, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/jaguar">Jaguar</a> managed to take second place amongst luxury brands with 837 points while stablemate <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/land rover">Land Rover</a> lagged all the way to 13th place with 785 points - 34 points below the luxury make average. It's no secret that the corporate schnoz adopted in recent years by <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/acura">Acura</a> is, shall we say... <em>controversial</em>. But whether or not it's helping or hurting sales is up for debate. On one hand, the brand's 24-percent increase in sales in 2010 over the previous year has <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/honda">Honda's</a> luxury division outpacing the gains of its rivals. On the other hand, nearly everyone's 2009 sales figures went down the economic toilet, and J.D. Power reports that exterior styling is the number one reason new car shoppers are rejecting the marque, followed closely by Acura's interior styling.<br />

Perhaps tellingly, Acura's two most successful models in sales gains are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/acura/mdx">MDX</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/acura/rdx">RDX</a> utility vehicles, models competing in burgeoning segments (and the former of which features a somewhat muted faces compared to the rest of the company's lineup). But hope may be on the way, and soon. According to <em>Automotive News</em>, Dave Conant, who owns an Acura store in Mission Viejo, California and has gotten an early look at the next-gen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/acura/tl">TL</a>, Acura's middle child is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/08/spy-shots-next-acura-tl-getting-rhinoplasty/">getting a major nose job</a>.<br />
<br />
And more new models are reportedly on the horizon as well, including hybrids and a likely return to the entry-level compact luxury class. What's more, the automaker has promised dealers that future models will be better differentiated from one another, both styling-wise and in size. All that sounds good, just so long as no giant polished cow-catcher grilles get in the way.<br />

Customer loyalty is incredibly important to automakers and something earned by providing both good products and service. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/J.D.+Power+and+Associates/">J.D. Power</a> has just put out its 2010 Customer Retention Study to show how well each automaker is doing at keeping existing car buyers coming back for more. Leading the way are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a> who tie each other with a 62 percent rate of customer retention. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/">Hyundai</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus/">Lexus</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> are right on their heels however with a rate of 60 percent each.<br />
<br />
Overall, import manufacturers have the edge on the domestics but that gap has slimmed down due to customers realizing that American automakers are producing a greater number of good products. Of the top 10 automakers in the study, nine are imports.<br />
<br />
One of those imports is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/kia/">Kia</a>, which has climbed the most compared to the 2009 study. Rising 21 percentage points, the Korean automaker now sees a rate of retention of 58 percent. That's 10 points above the industry average.<br />

Economists and talking heads argue endlessly about our economy on a daily basis. "It's back!," "It's almost back!" and "It's never coming back!" seem to be the leaders among the varied viewpoints we hear and read about. One sector that has apparently begun to rebound is the car rental business. Not necessarily in financial terms, but from the standpoint of customer satisfaction, America's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rental+car+companies/">rental car companies</a> are returning to to a position last seen in the pre-recession days.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/j.d.+power">J.D. Power</a> has released its annual North American Rental Car Satisfaction Study, and the results are positive for every company included in the survey. Now in its 15th year, this J.D. Power study examines customer satisfaction with the airport car rental process, and it looks at six specific factors: Costs &amp; Fees, Pick-Up Process, Rental Car, Return Process, Reservation Process, and Shuttle Bus/Van. The highest score possible is 1,000 points and, for the 2010 study, the average Overall Satisfaction score is 750. This is up from 733 in 2009 and 734 in 2008. Every company in the survey has improved year-over-year in the survey.<br />
<br />
This year's big winner, however, is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/enterprise">Enterprise</a>, which received the industry's highest rankings in customer satisfaction. Enterprise is no stranger to this award, and getting the nod in 2010 makes it seven years in a row for the rental car company. Following behind Enterprise, Hertz and National also performed quite well in the survey while Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Dollar and Thrifty rounded out the results. As per usual whenever there's great change afoot, finding the shelter of reality among competing storms of He Said/She Said isn't easy - it will probably take us another ten years to find out what's really true right now. J.D. Power and Associates has added more data to the mix with its report, "<a href="http://businesscenter.jdpower.com/Library.aspx">Drive Green 2020: More Hope than Reality</a>." The one-sentence summary is that, according to J.D. Power's research, there might be more hype than substance to hybrid and battery demand, but that China could change everything.<br />
<br />
J.D. Power is basing this on its assumption that hybrids and electric vehicles will only go from 2.2 percent of worldwide vehicle sales to 5.2 percent of worldwide sales in 2020. The cautious note on sales the firm puts down to regulatory inconsistencies across the globe, stable oil prices, and buyers' concerns about buying and maintaining such vehicles.<br />

To make battery demand a serious, valid concern, Powers believes that there will need to be a "significant increase" in the price of oil, a significant decrease in the costs of green technologies and a "coordinated government policy." <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/porsche/">Porsche</a> once again grabs the top spot (for the sixth time in a row) in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study. This year's study asked 76,000 owners 90 days after purchasing their 2010 model-year cars "how gratifying their new vehicle is to own and drive." The answer, for the first time since 1997, was that the domestic brands were more "appealing" as a whole than the imports (the domestics earned a score of 787 on a 1,000-point scale - 13 points greater than the imports).<br />

When it comes down to specific awards (as shown in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/j-d-power-2010-apeal-awards/med/#3175769">segment-level graphics</a>), <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> leads with five. The automaker earned one each for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/expedition">Expedition</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/explorer">Explorer Sport Trac</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/flex">Flex</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/fusion">Fusion</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/taurus">Taurus</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi/">Audi</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a> each garner two awards. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/taurus">Ford Taurus</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/avalanche">Chevrolet Avalanche</a>, both segment leaders, are the only two models that ranked highest in the 2010 APEAL study and in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/17/jd-power-2010-initial-quality-study-domestics-lead-imports/">2010 Initial Quality Study</a> (IQS) announced in June. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/suzuki/">Suzuki</a> is credited with the greatest improvement this year, while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/jeep/">Jeep</a> drops one slot from last year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/hyundai-trumps-bmw-and-jaguar-in-j-d-power-2009-apeal-study/">2009 APEAL Study</a> and falls to the bottom of the list for 2010. When I bought my first new car, back in 1973, I'd been warned by friends to expect a good half dozen defects that would need to be straightened out by the dealer. It turned out there were only five, I quickly counted, before taking my little sedan back to the shop for repairs. I was lucky. The worst problem I had to deal with was a loose mirror. A college chum, meanwhile, got stuck with a bad transmission on the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> he bought about the same time. But he took it in stride, as long as it got fixed right. And so did just about everyone else. Dealing with defects was a part of buying a car back then. <br />

But things started to change even before I was ready to trade in. The twin oil shocks of the '70s initially put the focus on fuel economy - more specifically on high-mileage imports. But as memories of gas lines faded, the emphasis shifted to the unexpectedly high quality the best of the Asians were delivering.<br />
<br />
One could argue - as an NPR talk show host did during my appearance this morning - that J.D. Power and Associates, with surveys like the Initial Quality Study, made <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a> by quantifying that quality gap. And it was a big one, domestic makers routinely suffered twice the number of "problems" of the top foreign makers. Of course, even the imports had their issues back then, but as quality became a watchword, even the worst manufacturers suddenly started to make it a top priority, and, year-after-year, the defect count for the typical car rolling off the assembly line has steadily shrunk.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/17/jd-power-2010-initial-quality-study-domestics-lead-imports/">According to Power's latest survey</a>, the average buyer of a 2010 car, truck or crossover is experiencing about 1.08 problems during the first 90 days of ownership. More precisely, in the language of the Initial Quality Survey, there are an average of 108 "problems" per 100 vehicles. <br />
<br />
The products produced by the worst manufacturer on the list, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/land-rover/">Land Rover</a>, suffered 170 problems per 100, or 170 PP100 - less than two glitches for every vehicle. Put another way, that's less than half what the best makers could deliver in the early years of the IQS. J.D. Power and Associates has released its 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/porsche/">Porsche</a> has earned back the top spot that was occupied by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus/">Lexus</a> in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/22/lexus-leads-hyundai-improves-while-infiniti-drops-in-j-d-powe/">last year's study</a>. The annual J.D. Power study measures IQS based on problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100) - a lower score means a lower rate of problem incidences and higher quality. <br />

Domestic brands, as a whole, demonstrated higher initial quality than import brands for the first time in an IQS (impressive, as the company has been conducting the study for 24 years). "Domestic automakers have made impressive strides in steadily improving vehicle quality, particularly since 2007," said David Sargent, vice president of global vehicle research at J.D. Power and Associates. "This year may mark a key turning point for U.S. brands as they continue to fight the battle against lingering negative perceptions of their quality." According to J.D. Power, the industry average for initial quality is 109 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2010 (that is a slight increase from 108 PP100 in 2009). However, initial quality for domestic brands as a whole has improved to an average of 108 PP100, slightly better than the initial quality of import brands, which average 109 PP100 in 2010.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/acura/">Acura</a> made an impressive improvement in the 2010 study. The automaker climbed from 111 PP100 in 2009 to just 86 PP100 in 2010, earning second spot just under Porsche (83 PP100). <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> (87 PP100) earned third position with Lexus (88 PP100) immediately following. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> (93 PP100) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lincoln/">Lincoln</a> (106 PP100) also earned Top 10 positions. Interestingly enough, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a> (117 PP100) fell from its seventh position in 2009 to 21st in the 2010 study. The complete J.D.
