Toyota Motor Corp. will reportedly spend the next three months retooling in order to build its Sequoia and Highlander SUVs on the same line (last year, the automaker canceled plans to manufacture the Highlander in a new plant slated for Mississippi).

Toyota also has no comment about the recent rumors that it had entered talks with General Motors about buying out General Motors's share in the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) venture after the U.S. automaker announced last week that it was abandoning its 50 percent stake in the partnership. Toyota is currently negotiating with the United Auto Workers to adjust labor rates at the Fremont, California, operation. According to reports, the plant could shut down if those talks go sour.

[Source: Automotive News, subs. req'd]
REPORT: Toyota bankrolling $500 million into Indiana plant; no comment on NUMMI originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 11:00:00 EST. On one side are Indiana pension funds who want to protect their investment. On the other side are Chrysler and Fiat, who want to protect Chrysler's very existence, and the government which wants to protect the economy and jobs. In between all of that is the law.

Chrysler was given until June 15 to arrange its affairs or Fiat had the right to walk away from the deal, which would mean almost certain liquidation for the Pentastar. A Fiat spokesman, however, has come out today and said "Fiat won't walk away from Chrysler."

No reason was given for Fiat's new commitment, but in addition to the fact that Fiat intimately knows how long it takes to get a stumbling business through necessary hurdles, this is probably the company's best near-term chance to get into the U.S. market with a whole lot of helping hands. For the time being, everyone now waits to see what the Supreme Court will do with the case. Thanks for the tip, Dave!

[Source: Yahoo!]
Fiat to Chrysler: "We won't walk away" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 13:39:00 EST. Indiana state treasurer Richard Mourdock explained that "Indiana retirees and Indiana taxpayers have suffered losses because of unprecedented and illegal acts of the federal government." The home of the Indianapolis 500 has $42 million worth of retirement funds invested in the Pentastar; less than 1% of the $6.9 billion in secured debt owed by Chrysler. Indiana's appeal of the Fiat sale officially puts any deal with the Italian automaker on hold until a resolution has been made.

Veteran bankruptcy judge Arthur Gonzalez couldn't disagree with Mr. Mourdock more, saying ""the Court finds that all relevant standards have been established to grant the relief requested." By "relief," Judge Gonzalez is likely talking about Fiat and its ability to take ownership of Chrysler.

Though $42 million doesn't buy a lot these days, the state has the right to fight the bankruptcy. Whether the midwestern state wins its case is another matter all together. The New York Court of Appeals hearing of the state of Indiana's objection to the Chrysler bankruptcy hearing is widely viewed as little more than a formality. Chrysler's bankruptcy has gone very smoothly thus far, and with the backing of plenty of rock-solid legal types in the White House, it is now looking more and more likely that Chrysler will indeed exit bankruptcy in around 60 days.

[Source: The Detroit Bureau]
REPORT: Chrysler's sale to Fiat put on hold temporarily to hear debtor objections originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 14:27:00 EST.
Click above for a hi-res gallery of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

The 5th-generation Subaru Legacy has officially begun production, with the first car rolling off the Lafayette, Indiana assembly line late last week to confetti-strewn, ribbon-cutting fanfare. In keeping with Subaru's recent new-model introductions, beginning with the current Impreza and continuing with the new Forester, the 2010 Subaru Legacy wears controversial new bodywork that abandons the elegantly understated lines of the outgoing model in favor of a more stylized (overstyled?) face attached to a car that has grown dimensionally in order to be better-positioned against the likes of the Honda Accord. With production now underway, look for the new Subaru Legacy to start arriving in U.S. showrooms by July. We'll weigh in with our impressions of the car as soon as we can get our hands on one. Thanks to Steve B. for the tip!

Gallery: 2010 Subaru Legacy

[Source: JConline.com]
First 2010 Subaru Legacy rolls off the line in Indiana originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 31 May 2009 17:01:00 EST. Without cutting any jobs in North America, Honda will move assembly of the Honda Pilot SUV and Honda Ridgeline pickup from Alliston, Ontario, to Lincoln, Alabama. Later this year, Honda is expected to add another 2,000 jobs as it begins to build Civics in Indiana, as well. That plant will be Honda's seventh in North America. Honda has sold 34,163 units of the Civic in North America through April of this year, which is 8.2% more Civics sold on average per day than in 2007. For comparison's sake, Toyota has sold 32,435 Corollas, Ford has sold 23,850 Foci and Chevy has sold 18,636 Cobalts so far this year.

At least that is how it used to be with one of the world's largest automaker. (The one exception is the Toyota Avalon sedan -- exported to the Middle East last year.)

Toyota has now announced that it will ramp up U.S. vehicle production in Indiana and begin exporting vehicles to other booming markets around the world. The first to leave our shores will be the Toyota Sequoia, as it heads to buyers in the Middle East later this year. The Toyota Sienna minivan will follow, as it will be shipped to China and other markets as early as 2010. This news should be welcomed by workers and suppliers at the automaker's plants as Toyota recently slowed production at several facilities. This new trend of shifting production towards exporting vehicles may help keep them running at capacity, and keep everyone on their jobs.

As of today, production of the Tundra full-size pickup is split between Toyota's facility in Princeton, Indiana, and the automaker's brand new San Antonio plant in Texas. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Toyota is considering moving all production of the Tundra to just the Texas plant. Just over two weeks ago, Toyota announced it was slowing production on the Tundra (and Sequoia) due to lagging sales. The move to consolidate all Tundra manufacturing in one location may be seen as a sign Toyota only expects to sell 200,000 full-size units or less this year, as that number represents the production capacity of the Texas facility. You may remember that Toyota boldly claimed it would sell 200,000 units of the Tundra in 2007, the newly redesigned truck's first year of sales. It missed that target, but not by much with 196,555 units sold. Toyota hasn't officially commented on the rumor yet, but we'll let you know when it breaks the silence.

UPDATE: Toyota has issued a statement saying it is not moving all Tundra production to San Antonio.

States have come up with some neat little quips to get people to slow down for work zones on freeways. "Slow for the cone zone" comes to mind. The Hoosier State has shunned the soft sell and gone straight for the I-double-dog-dare-you-to-speed-here school of prevention by serving up a $1,000 ticket.

Starting July 1, the Indiana DOT can lower speed limits without previous any study in highway work zones. Then, they can send five-0 to the scene to make sure Joe Q. Driver isn't trying anything funny, even if there aren't any workers present. The first time Joe's foot slips after he passes the 45 mph sign, it's $300. The second infraction is $500. And if that doesn't cure his wayward ways, then his gracious donation of $1,000 will gladly be accepted by the good state of Indiana. Oh yeah, and if he fights it and loses it's another $70.

Our favorite provision is the "aggressive driving" misdemeanor. If you drive 46 mph in a highway work zone and perform any aggressive action on a driver in front of you, such as flashing your headlights, and you get caught, you get a $5,000 fine that probably comes with its own Howitzer sound effects. If you do it again, the officer will apply a Rowdy Roddy Piper sleeper hold, then pin you to the mat with a $10,000 ticket, three years in jail, and a felony on your record. Don't mess with <strike>Texas</strike> Indiana.

The deal was one of the first fruits born from Toyota's decision to snatch up the 8.7% stake in Subaru that GM dropped back in 2005.

The agreement nets Toyota the ability to produce 100,000 more of the vanilla sedans per year (Toyota sold an already impressive 448,445 Camrys in 2006) at Subaru's plant in Lafayette, Indiana. Subaru, meahwhile, snared a $230 million payment from Toyota to build even more of the best-seller, and 1,000 jobs have been added, as well, to nearly double the 120,000 Tribecas, Outbacks and Legacys the plant produced in 2006. The local community also netted a $60,000 donation to their zoo's owl exhibit in return for support of the deal.

So, Toyota gets more Camrys to sell, Subaru earns money, the citizens of Lafayette, Indiana have 1,000 more jobs, and the owls at the Columbian Park Zoo win an upgrade to their exhibit. Maybe they'll tell their other bird friends to aim for cars other than Camrys.

PR After the jump.

[Source: Toyota]
Continue reading First Subaru Camry rolls off the line in Indiana

First Subaru Camry rolls off the line in Indiana originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 17:32:00 EST. Coincidentally, both projects are scheduled to begin March 19. That's when Honda will break ground on its new $550 million facility in Greensburg, Indiana. Today it was announced that the plant will inititally build the Civic and be good for an additional 200,000 units annually. The new facility will additionally employ up to 2,000 workers.

Although a Honda spokesman, David Iida, had no comment, experts seem to agree that the Civic will be the only car on the plant's menu for some time. "My strong belief is that Civic will be the first and primary product, and that more will follow after that," said Alan Baum, director of automotive forecasting for Birmingham, Mich. based Planning Edge. Although Civic sales were down last year, we told you earlier that Honda felt it was because of a lack of supply rather than demand. Honda's immediate move was to add Civic production to its Alliston, Ontario, plant. The East Liberty, Ohio plant will likely continue on as a source of Civics, as well.

[Source: Automotive News]
Honda earmarks Civic for new plant in Indiana originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Mar 2007 18:33:00 EST. The Japanese automaker ran ads in newspapers around Indiana looking for workers with experience in Automotive Engineering, Purchasing, Information Technology and Administration. Eighteen slots were available, but Honda was inundated with over 5,000 applications. They've stopped accepting applications for fourteen of the positions in the areas of production and maintenance, just so that the mountain of applications can be sorted and sifted through. Those interested in applying for the remaining four positions can click here.

What does that mean? Some might say it illustrates how a languishing workforce is eager to throw its hat in the ring with a Japanese automaker, perhaps expecting greater job security in these uncertain times. From our perspective, it illustrates how saturated the job market is for anyone in an auto-related field. With layoffs and voluntary separations occuring around every corner, there are clearly many more qualified people than there are available jobs right now. And it's not often we see a "Now Hiring" sign put out by an automaker, so when it happens, regardless of the automaker looking for fresh blood, a glut of applications is almost guaranteed.

[Source: The Detroit News]
Honda receives 5,000 applications for 18 spots at Indiana plant originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 12:55:00 EST.
"It might be the fastest speed ever recorded on the northwestern Indiana county's roads," said Porter County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Emmons," most people's cars won't go that fast." Not really the thing you necessarily want to be known for during your first year of licensed driving. We can't imagine what the perceived punishment was going to be, but it was obviously severe enough that Brandon Rapp, 16, was clocked doing 142 miles per hour in his Subaru Impreza (WRX?) in an effort not to be late getting home.

The teen now faces charges of speeding (87 over the limit!) and misdemeanor reckless driving, either of which could cost him his license.

Mr. Rapp was stopped at 12:40AM on a stretch US 30 and informed officers that he was speeding so his parents wouldn't be mad at him for being home late. The officer wrote the tickets and told the young driver to go straight home and call him within the hour. When she asked where he was, the 16-year-old's mother made the call to the officer and got the whole story. If he thought he was in trouble for being late and was willing to risk driving 142 miles per hour, we don't even want to think about what might have happened after that phone call.

Thanks to Kurt B for the tip!

Members will be given a set number of points to 'spend' per year, with each vehicle having itsown number of points based upon variables like price and time of year. Most drivers can expect around 28-45 daysof vehicle useage per year. More details about the system are available at the link.

The club has five members thus far, with a goal of signing 20 by the beginning of June and a total of 40-45members overall.
Toyota has announced that it will move its best-selling Camry sedan assembly to Subaru's underutilized Lafayette,Indiana plant. The changeover will free up capacity at the company's main car factory in Kentucky to build a 'new tallstation wagon.'

Of course, Toyota isn't going it alone... it'll have the faith and trust of $94 million in state and localgovernment incentives Subaru acquired when the plant was announced in 1989.

According to the Indianapolis Star, the automaker is expected to announce that it will hire 1,000 workers at theplant as early as Monday.
