When Lingenfelter Performance Engineering announced it had crossed the 200-mph mark in its tuned Camaro ZL1, the man guiding the wheel was Hot Rod editor-in-chief Dave Freiburger. We saw a short video of the run in the 702-horsepower - that's at the wheels - coupe, but in the latest episode of Hot Rod Unlimited, Freiburger offers the long-form backstory of what it took to get to 202.6 mph exactly.

Continental Tire's proving grounds in Uvalde, Texas aren't Italy's Nardo Ring (where the 2013 Shelby GT500 did 202 mph), and there was much more involved than keeping steady on the straights and hanging on the banks. Scroll down for the video.
Continue reading Watch Hot Rod hit 202 MPH in Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1

Watch Hot Rod hit 202 MPH in Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2012 15:00:00 EST.
With the 2013 Shelby GT500 putting out 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet torque, we're guessing that more than a few owners of the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be looking to even things up via the aftermarket. The speed-obsessed guys over at Lingenfelter Performance Engineering are already putting a few options on the table with a three new upgrade packages that boost the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 to anywhere from 630 to 700-plus horsepower.

Apparently, Lingenfelter was eager to prove the merits of its work, and just a couple weeks after taking delivery of an early production Camaro ZL1 had it out on the track putting down times. The test car, pushing out 720 horsepower, laid down a 10.79 second quarter mile pass at Muncie Dragway in Albany, IN, and later recorded a 202 mph top speed at Continental Tire's proving grounds earlier this week. Coincidentally, that's the same top speed that the 2013 Shelby GT500 reached during its high speed testing at the Nardo Ring in Italy last year.

You can read more about Lingenfelter's upgrade packages for the 2012 Camaro ZL1 as well as more details on the high speed test in the press release below.

*UPDATE* We have also added a video of the top speed run that you can see below.
Continue reading Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 tops 200 mph

Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 tops 200 mph originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 17:58:00 EST.
Last time Roadkill took a trip it inolved a $1,500 budget, a 1972 Pontiac Catalina and a trip from El Paso to Los Angeles. This time their adventures point northward to Alaska, and their chariot will be a clone of the 1968 Ford Ranchero that Hot Rod used to take a class win in the first Baja 1000. It is, naturally, called "Viva Raunchero."

Ice racing in America's largest state is the goal. But the real action ends up taking place far away from Arctic latitudes as co-pilots David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan get to enjoy hours of freezing temps when the Ranchero throws repeated tantrums in Vail, Colorado and Utah. You'll find another lesson in road tripping the Hot Rod way in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Hot Rod tackles the Alaska Highway in 1968 Ford Ranchero Baja 1000 clone

Hot Rod tackles the Alaska Highway in 1968 Ford Ranchero Baja 1000 clone originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 20:01:00 EST.
The event is called Rust and Dust, but this year that dust was replaced with rain and mud. Still, the attendees of this automotive festival in Teterow, Germany arrived in large numbers to share their passion for rockabilly, rat rods and racing. The rain attempted to dampen spirits, but it was powerless against these German fans of American old school.

The language is different, but the cars and music are the same. So is the enthusiasm for the style, and it comes through in the following video, which has subtitles but almost doesn't even need them.

OK, that's not true... we need the subtitles. Still, the video shows a group of car enthusiasts gathering to hang out and enjoy their shared love, regardless of the weather. At first it seems odd, due to the language being spoken (and occasional Audi and Opel logo), but it quickly becomes mesmerizing. Click past the jump to see for yourself.
Continue reading German enthusiasts show true passion for rockabilly and rat rods

German enthusiasts show true passion for rockabilly and rat rods originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 19:58:00 EST.
We have something of a hard time applying the term "hot rod" to the Caresto T6 R. The unusual Volvo-based retro one-off has simply transcended the art. Whereas most builders start with chassis manufactured by one of the illustrious Big Three, the T6 R is a clean-sheet design with a mid-engine turbocharged I6 swiped from the XC90 that puts power to the rear wheels via a five-speed Geartronic transmission. With a handcrafted aluminum body and a removable polycarbonate roof, the machine is better executed than most auto show concepts. We aren't alone in that assessment, either. Conceived by Leif Tufvesson, a former Volvo and Koeniggsegg development man, Hot Rod Magazine famously called this Caresto one of the "most spectacularly-crafted hot rods to ever grace the pages of this or any other magazine."

Big praise.

Now the Caresto T6 R is up for sale via the miracle of eBay Motors. The Swedish machine has racked up bids of over $23,000 as of the time of writing with just over three days left on the clock, though the reserve has yet to be met (and is probably far higher). Patina'd rat rod Camaro hits the dyno - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Imagine dumping $100,000 into a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, building a 485-cubic-inch engine topped with a Kenne Bell supercharger and adding coilovers to all four corners, only to learn that your hot rod wasn't different enough. Such a scenario played out for Bill Rombauts and Dave Sherer, but instead of adding more glam to their investment, the two took a decidedly different approach.

The two decided to turn their $100K Camaro into a rat rod, essentially beating down the pony car over the course of a week to make it look worse for wear. The result is a new-world beater that boasts some serious buzz right in time for the Hot Rod Power Tour, but before this rat rod hit the circuit, it spent some time on the dyno.

Beyond the jump is video of the Patina'd Camaro as it hits the dyno. The Kenne Bell-supercharger equipped engine, which boasts 16.3 pounds of boost, gives this beat down Camaro an impressive 804 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. That should be enough pop to make this Camaro a real hand full at the local drag strip, and we're guessing it will attract a bit of attention on the Power Tour. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself, if only to hear what 16.3 pounds of boost sounds like at WOT. Thanks for the tip, Paul!
Continue reading Patina'd Camaro rat rod hits the dyno

Patina'd Camaro rat rod hits the dyno originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 May 2011 09:58:00 EST.
Bill Rombauts and his buddy Dave Sherer have taken the patina'd rat rod look to new heights, applying the rust-first philosophy to a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Before going all Father Time on the paint job, the two spent close to $100,000 giving the car as much go as it has show.

Underneath all that affected rust and thinning paint lives a worked-over Kenne Bell supercharged 485-cubic-inch V8 based on a GM Performance Parts block. Before the addition of the blown 485, the Chevrolet was pumping out in the neighborhood of 650 rear-wheel-horsepower and tripping the lights in around 11 seconds through the quarter mile. Now, Sherer and Rombauts are looking for the 10-second range, and won't say what kind of power the car makes.

Say what you will about the decision to make a brand-new Camaro look like it's 30 years old, but you definitely can't argue with this thing's gusto. With prodigious power, a $100K mod list and a paint scheme some might call ugly, it's also guaranteed to make a stir on Power Tour 2011. To make that goal a reality, Rombauts and Sherer are looking for sponsors to get their car to and from the Tour.
Patina'd 2010 Chevrolet Camaro headed to Power Tour originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 18:01:00 EST.
When it comes to getting packages where they're going, few crews are more on point than the team at UPS. Whether it's across the state or around the world, Brown gets your gear where it's going with a quickness. The company has used a fleet of proprietary delivery trucks since 1966, but judging from what American Trucker just discovered, someone's been turning some wrenches after hours. As it turns out, UPS has its own Hot Rod delivery special. Along with one wicked flame paint job and wild wheels, the beast packs something truly under its fiberglass hood.

Instead of a tired old diesel mill, a super-high output Ford Racing V8 dumps 500 horsepower on the rear wheels via a manual gearbox. As if that wasn't enough to raise some eyebrows, the engine supposedly runs off of straight alcohol for a clean-burning machine that can light the rear rubber on command. We dig the truck, but if it were ours, we'd be rocking stock wheels and a standard coat of UPS brown paint for the ultimate sleeper. Head over to SPEED to check out the video for yourself.
UPS truck gets SHO transplant, flame job originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 08 May 2011 11:26:00 EST. Australia's obsession with automobiles is as strong as the passion we feel for them here in the states. Bandit Films recently brought us a clip showing one man's love for his Ford Falcon Squire. Now it's produced a new film showing one man's ode to the dry lakes racers from a bygone era in California's automotive history.

Dubbed the Rancho Deluxe Roadster by its owner Ben Thomas, this 1932 Ford Model B is powered by a flathead V8 and just drips with classic hot rod cool. Thomas parks the car at his shop, Rancho Deluxe, which specializes in working on American cars from World War II through the sixties. It's also a place for folks to hang out, have cake and coffee, then talk about cars. Click past the jump to see Ben Thomas talk about his roadster and his passion for cars.
That break in the action... resulted in more action, because someone at Shelby handed the Hot Rod crew keys to a 2011 GT350.

Did they take a few casual runs up and down the road to get some basic footage? No, they lined up the car on a desert side street and attempted to ruin the rear rubber. On their way back to the original film shoot, they threw in a quick power slide for good measure. Drop the clutch and click past the jump to check out the clip.

Bo Zolland's Cadillac-powered 33-34 hot rod - Click above for high-res image gallery

The last time we checked in with Bo Zolland he was rendering a Camaro to do Le Mans duty. Half a year later, he's stayed in the house of General Motors but gone back in time - on the outside, at least. His 33-34 hot rod is beautifully traditional from the windshield back, but mixes it up in front with that cowcatcher grille flanked by integrated headlights and the six hood-bursting pipes.

We wouldn't mind seeing where the other two pipes emerge, because under that hood is meant to be the 556-horsepower V8 from the Cadillac CTS-V. The sound of that lump through massively shortened pipes would be prodigious, and keeping all that power on the road while moving forward might take all of your attention with those narrow wheels. Give us a set of rims from the Cadillac-powered VRS, on the other hand, and we'd be all about it. You can check out Zolland's latest in the gallery of photos below.
If you want to draw hot rods and learn the basics of drawing cars, then you'll want to check out the Hot Rod Art Book for the iPad. A combination of the text-only book and the videos you'll find at the book's site and Vimeo, it contains 100 pages of guidance and tips from 13 professional hot rod artists and 1.5 hours of videos. It's not going to instantly turn you into Hot Wheels designer Dwayne Vance, one of the contributors, but you'll know how to pen the Powell Motors Homer just like you've always wanted.

Follow the jump for a sample of the video tutorials you'll find in the book.

Yeah... Toyota is painting this one as a what-would-happen if Tundras existed back during the hot rodding heyday of the 1950s. We'll let you draw your own conclusions about that. However, we would like to take this opportunity to point out that the grill would have been chrome, not matte. And odds are they would have lowered the truck a bit more, right?

Also, whatever aerodynamic advantage gained with the moon disk hubs is negated (and then some) by the giant wing mirrors. All that smack talked, an actual Japanese take on American hot rods would be welcome -- maybe next year. Full press release -- and perhaps a better explanation -- after the jump.

This past Sunday was the 7th Annual Wings, Wheels and Rotors Expo at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, California, and after our experience there last year, we just had to go back for more. As you might guess from the title, this is more than just another hot rod gathering. Attendees get a chance to see mega horsepower air transport as well as earthbound movers and shakers. Even better, folks can actually get up close and personal with military vehicles, airplanes, jets and helicopters too. It's like an open house for the military, with a few hundred muscle cars thrown in for good measure. Hot rodders (and bikers) tend to be a fairly patriotic bunch, so the combination is a perfect match. Make the jump for our report from the ground.

Take something old - in this case, a 1933 Ford Roadster body - and make it into something new - a CNG-powered, 600-horsepower beast, perhaps. That's what's happening over at AFVTech, which is prepping the fenderless hot rod for the upcoming Alternative Fuels and Vehicles Institute expo that's coming in May.

AFVTech is using what President Kevin Fern calls the "Natural Drive dedicated EPA-certified CNG retrofit systems" for 600 clean-burning horsepower. The conversion uses a modified General Motors LS7 seven-liter V8 engine (as used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06), a six-speed transmission, drive-by-wire controls and ABS disc brakes.

The company is also working with the Arizona Fountain Hills High School's research club on turning a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria into a hydrogen-powered vehicle.

If you look up the name George Barris, you'll find two famous individuals from the same era. One snapped iconic photos of Marilyn Monroe and Dwight Eisenhower, while the other took shots of hot-rodded Chevys and Buicks. While we're sure George Barris the celebrity photographer was great, our attention is, as always, drawn to the car guy with the same name. Barris, as you well know, was one of the pioneers of the multi-billion-dollar custom car industry, and he took as much pride in the pictures he took to show off his work as he did the custom jobs that made him famous. Barris's photos eventually landed in popular magazines like Hot Rod and Rod & Custom. Follow the jump to look at some of the photography that helped make George Barris a household name... at least in the car world.

[Source: YouTube via The Garage Blog]
Continue reading VIDEO: Presenting the Kustom Kar photography of George Barris

VIDEO: Presenting the Kustom Kar photography of George Barris originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:13:00 EST.
Click above for huge high-res gallery from Seal Beach

We love spring for a multitude of reasons, but mainly for the car shows that start popping up around the country. The sun comes out and so do the classic cars, hot rods and muscle cars. This weekend we stopped by the 22nd Annual Classic Car Show in Seal Beach, California along with about 25,000 other folks. The show features around 500 cars, stretching from PCH to the pier right down the heart of Main Street.

The day includes a pancake breakfast, a running of the local pinewood derby, and a whole lotta' fun. Besides the bands that show up to play everything from swing to rock-and-roll, there were also the sounds of the cars themselves during the periodic cacklefest moments of the day. That's when the show participants are encouraged to start 'em up and stomp the loud pedal. It's quite an earful, especially if you happen to be standing next to one of the dozen or so race cars in attendance, like we did when a vintage Yeakel dragster once piloted by Tom "Mongoose" McEwen dropped the throttle.

Although muscle cars are generally king at these types of gatherings, there are also a number of other classes. Everything from the aforementioned race cars to European classics; from hot rods to Woodies; from customs to boats, bikes and even buses. A great event that puts a big emphasis on wholesome family fun in a quintessentially American way and you can check it out in our massive gallery below.

Gallery: 22nd Seal Beach Classic Car Show

Photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.
Autoblog spends a day at the 22nd Annual Seal Beach Classic Car Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 19:31:00 EST.
Toyo Tires has one of the coolest booths at SEMA this year. We already showed you the Tetsu Bentley they have on display, but they also have a sweet Evo and GT-R, a custom Cayenne and this beautiful hot rod. It's based on a 1931 Studebaker Model 54, but features a few modifications... to put it mildly. Motivation comes courtesy of a Chevy 350 with an Edelbrock intake, three, two-barrel carbs with open stacks, and a "Zoomie" open header exhaust system. The custom chassis rides on an equally custom air-ride suspension and Centerline smoothies wrapped in Toyo Proxes. As you can probably tell from the pics, it also has a totally customized body and interior that makes it one of the most attractive cars at the show. Check out the gallery for a bunch of high-res pics.

Gallery: SEMA 2008: Choppin' Block '31 Studebaker Model 54

Photos copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.
SEMA 2008: Choppin' Block '31 Studebaker Model 54 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 18:02:00 EST. Starting with a classic old-school vehicle platform, adding power and lowering it to the ground, the Hot Rod ethos still manages to attract its fair share of gawkers, including those of us wielding cameras. Take a look at the gallery we assembled below for the coolest 'rods and customs we could find.

Gallery: Woodward 2008: Hot Rods

Woodward 2008: Hankering for Hot Rods? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 10:34:00 EST. Former Coddington colleague, John Buttera, lost his battle with brain cancer on March 2nd. He was 67. 'Lil John Buttera was one of the pioneers of the Southern California performance scene. He initially moved to the West Coast from Wisconsin in order to work with Mickey Thompson on his famed Land Speed Record streamliner. Buttera then moved onto producing legendary dragsters and Funny Cars out of his own chassis shop in Cerritos, California. He even entered his own creation into the 1987 Indianapolis 500, which qualified eighth and earned him the Clint Brawner Mechanical Excellence Award.

Our sincere condolences go out to his friends and family.

[Source: Inside Line]
Street Rod and Funny Car builder John Buttera succumbs to cancer originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 14:26:00 EST.
