If you introduced an '80s-era Honda Civic to its modern counterpart, it couldn't recognize what it's become. But after decades of growing dimensions, Honda's going back to the drawing board for the next-gen Civic.

The change in direction was reportedly ordered last year before the global economy took a nose-dive by product chief Tsuneo Tanai who observed a rise in oil and raw metal prices. Once the financial sector hit rock bottom, the Civic emerged as a strong player, out-selling the Ford F-Series pickup as the number one vehicle in the United States in May 2008. Not satisfied with sitting back and seeing how things shape up, though, Tanai ordered his engineers and designers to scrap their plans and redesign the next-gen Civic to be smaller, cheaper, lighter and more fuel efficient.

The move coincides with Honda's re-strategizing vis-a-vis hybrids and electric vehicles, not to mention the cancellation of its V8 and rear-drive programs. But despite having put more people on the job, the decision to restart the Civic's development halfway through the process is sure to be a major setback for the company's lifecycle schedule. And not just for the Civic itself, but also for vehicles that share its platform, including the CR-V crossover, the Element sport-utility-box, the JDM Stream and European-market FR-V minivans, to say nothing of the upcoming CR-Z, Acura RDX, and of course the all-important Canadian-market Acura CSX.
But if that minivan is the 2010 Honda Stream, you can still satisfy your sporty urges thanks to Mugen. The practically in-house tuner has developed a full line of interior, exterior, aero, performance, handling and cosmetic parts for the people mover -- from typical Mugen mods like spoilers and wheels to a performance air filter and TypeT touring brake pads. If you add the sport suspension to your minivan, well, maybe you really do need to get a different car.

Gallery: 2010 Mugen Honda Stream

[Source: Mugen]
Unlikely State Of Tune: Mugen takes on the Honda Stream originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Jun 2009 20:07:00 EST. Nevertheless, Honda appears intent to make some money off of this MPV that's based on the same platform as the Civic and CR-V. It's reportedly been a big hit in Japan since it debuted in 2000, though the recent redesign has met with mixed reviews. Though the JDM version can seat up to seven or eight people, Winding Road reports the U.S. version will probably get only two rows of seats. In Japan, the Stream is available with either a R18A 1.8L i-VTEC engine and five-speed auto or an R20A 2.0L i-VTEC engine mated to a CVT transmission. Whether those engines will be offered in the U.S. in unknown, though we would expect at least the larger of the two motors to make the journey to our shores.

Considering Honda's success with the Odyssey in the minivan segment, the Stream may do very well in the U.S. It appears smaller than a minivan, but larger than, say, a Mazda5. The current trend of segment-bending tall wagons and CUVs could carry the Stream right along.

[Source: Winding Road]
Sources Say: Honda Stream coming to U.S. in 2009 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 14:56:00 EST. Because we can't read Japanese, we can't tell you much about them other than their names, which are:

Stream Sports Concept

Fit Daily Active Concept

Stream Exclusive Concept

Forza smart 2 seater concept

The Forza is a scooter, by the way. We're most interested in seeing how extensively Honda tricks out its new Stream MPV, which is one of the blog's favorite "forbidden fruit" JDM machines. If any of you Autoblog aficionados can read Japanese, we'd love to know what the blurbs with each sketch say, otherwise, we'll just have to wait 'till January, when Makuhari Messe turns into the epicenter of JDM car porn for a week.

(Additional pics after the jump)

Source: Carview.co.jp
Continue reading Honda releases sketches of its Tokyo Auto Salon concepts

Honda releases sketches of its Tokyo Auto Salon concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Dec 2006 12:03:00 EST. The restyle gives the new Stream a modern, more aggressive appearance (especially in RSZ trim) and also evokes the front-end design of the current JDM Odyssey, creating a family resemblance that didn't exist before. The outgoing Stream was much more funky-looking and incorporated some puzzling styling cues -- one of which appears to have set the precedent for the controversial side window shape seen on the upcoming CR-V. To illustrate the differences between the new Stream and the model it replaces, we've added a photo comparison after the jump.

The external makeover is complemented by a new interior that bears a strong family resemblance to those found in the new Civic models. The cabin is roomier thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase and redesigned sills that add a small increase in width for the first two seat rows. A completely flat floor adds a little extra room for all passengers, including those in the 3rd row. Naturally, multiple seating configurations can be implemented, allowing drivers to haul a variety of items in the cargo bay.

Honda is calling back some 423,344 vehicles in its home market of Japan over faulty key interlocks which allow keys to be removed from the ignition when the gearshift is in positions other than 'park.' The problem affects a total of nine models, including the Fit, Stream, Civic and Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Mobilio, Integra. and Step WGN. Regardless of the model, all vehicles affected date from between April of 2001 and March of 2002, and all are packing automatic transmissions.
