Few events bring out the big guns every year like the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In the absence of a prominent British Motor Show, the car-fest hosted by the Earl of March is the most significant automotive spectacle the UK has to offer this side of seventeen seasons of Top Gear. But it's so much more than that.

Goodwood is a celebration of all things automotive. And more than watching cars sitting still on a convention center show floor or even the lawns of a concours, the Festival of Speed goads automakers, racing teams and classic car collectors into running their finest pieces of machinery up The Hill in a visceral orgy of velocity.

This year's event just took place over the long weekend, and was packed with everything you'd hope to see: the crème de la crème of production road cars, grand prix racers, classics, endurance race cars, prototypes, rally machines and touring cars. But don't take our word for it: we've assembled a gallery of over 200 images from this year's event specifically so you wouldn't have to. Check 'em out, but be warned: there will be drool.
2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed in 235 pictures originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 20:01:00 EST.
Mini diesel by Cummins - Click above to enlarge

Cummins: the largest independent diesel engine manufacturer. The QSK78: the largest engine they make. Mini: one of the smallest cars on the road. Oh dear, this could get messy.

The unfathomably large QSK78 was recently unveiled with 78 liters of displacement, eighteen cylinders (that's 4.3 liters per cylinder!), a dozen turbochargers, 3,500 horsepower and over 10,000 lb-ft of torque. It's used to power those enormous dump trucks seen schlepping heavy loads (try 360 metric tons on for size) around quarries and mines. And now it's been installed in a vintage Austin Mini.

The Frankenstein-ain't-got-nothin'-on-me monstrosity was, according to Cummins, commissioned by a customer, but we can hardly image it being actually drivable, let alone certified for street use anywhere this side of the Persian Gulf. It'll be unveiled this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it's sure to be the most powerful - not to mention the strangest - vehicle on display. Press release after the jump.

As we start the second half of 2009, the automotive industry remains in turmoil but the economy is finally showing signs of recovery. And once again, we have a full calendar of events to keep our minds on the positive aspects of our industry. Show season is in full swing so you'll find plenty of concours events, cruise nights, and local shows filling July weekends. In America, Meadowbrook is the star of July, but there are also other interesting events like the GoodGuys Heartland Nationals, Hudson-Essex-Terraplane meet in Pontiac, New England Concours d'Elegance in Vermont, the First Annual Great American Car Show in Massachusetts, Micros on the Monument in Racine, International Bricklin Owners Club Annual Grand National Meet, and the Alfa Romeo Owners Club National Meet in Portland, among others.

There's lots of racing in July, too. Most Formula 1 teams will make a brief stop at Goodwood before resuming their regular racing schedule at the Nürburgring, followed by the Hungarian GP at the end of the month. IndyCar hits Watkins Glen, the Streets of Toronto, and the airport course in Edmonton. NASCAR fans can look forward to races in Daytona, Chicago, and at the Brickyard. ALMS teams can take it easy after the marathon that was the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a two-hour stint at Lime Rock Park.

There will also be plenty of other random racing action in July, with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Portland Historic Races, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman, and the New England Forest Rally. Green car fans can look forward to the Eco-Rally U.S.A. 2009, and bike fans can take in the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix or AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio.

If none of those events appeals to you, check the Google Calendar after the jump for even more listings, all with detailed info and links. Please use the comments section to add or modify listings. Oh, and Happy 4th of July!
