General Motors is looking for every way to conserve its ever thinning supply of money, and while April sales were better, the overall picture is decidedly grim.

In a move to conserve resources and hopefully help clear up any inventory buildups, AFP is reporting that The General plans to idle most of its domestic plants this summer - for as long as nine weeks. GM is expected to let its employees know first before any official statements are made, but it is believed that the work stoppage will coincide with GM's normal July shutdown, though there could be staggered closures as early as May.

If GM does put its operations into a large-scale hover, it may have a ripple effect on suppliers, many of whom are also holding on by the slimmest of margins. Will the summer be a season of cascading furloughs and bankruptcy announcements? Let's all take a deep breath as we wait to see.

[Source: AFP]
REPORT: GM planning up to nine-week summer shutdowns originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 08:56:00 EST. The company confirmed this morning that it will eliminate 10,000 salaried positions around the world before the end of this year. That will take GM's global white collar staff from 73,000 down to 63,000. Of the 10,000 heads to be cut, 3,400 will be in the United States where the company currently has 29,500 white collar staff. Those jobs will be eliminated by the end of April through another program of buyouts.

Those that remain in their jobs after May 1 will be taking home less in pay every week. From May 1 through the end of the year, those in executive positions will see a 10% cut in base pay. Those at lower pay grades will see salary cuts of 3-7%. Whether the cuts remain in place into 2010 will depend on the state of the business at the end of this year. In this economy, a job with 5% less pay is probably better than no job at all, but it still sucks.

[Source: General Motors]
Continue reading GM confirms 10,000 more salaried employees to go this year, plus pay cuts

GM confirms 10,000 more salaried employees to go this year, plus pay cuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 09:10:00 EST. Those workers are out of a job on November 1st, but a new round of job cuts means even more empty cubicles for the world's largest automaker. The Detroit News is reporting that GM plans to lay off more white-collar workers despite having already reached its goal of reducing the company's salaried workforce by 5,100 jobs. While a specific number of how many more jobs would be cut wasn't given, a letter sent to GM execs confirms that more pink slips will be handed out by the end of this year and into early 2009. To further reduce spending, GM is also canceling certain employee benefits including its 401k matching program, tuition reimbursement and adoption assistance programs. All of these spending cuts are meant to help GM weather the storm until the auto industry bounces back from its own recession. We're sure that's little consolation to the men and women who are out of a job in the mean time, but with fewer and fewer people buying new cars and trucks, GM has little choice.

[Source: The Detroit News]

GM cutting more white-collar jobs and employee benefits originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 17:22:00 EST. This basic truth has been proven once again with GM's announced lay-offs of some 1,500 hourly workers, The cut's breakdown includes about 700 workers from General Motor's Pontiac assembly plant, about 400 each at both its Wilmington, Delaware, assembly plant and its Detroit-Hamtramck facility.

In Pontiac, where GM assembles full-size trucks, the worker reduction is necessary as General Motors reduces its output to just 24 trucks per hour from 55 per hour. In Detroit, the General will cut its Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS production from 56 units per hour to 38, and in Delaware where the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and Opel Roadster are built, production has already been cut in half. This announcement comes just days after GM said it would close plants located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Janesville, Wisconsin.

[Source: The Detroit News]
GM laying off 1,500 workers at three plants originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 18:29:00 EST. This 15% head-count reduction is part of an ongoing effort to trim costs as the automaker continues to hemorrhage cash.

Also on the docket are early retirement plans offered to a select group of workers close to retirement age, while employees who choose to stay won't be getting raises until 2010 at the earliest. If GM reaches its reduction goals, the automaker will have shed its salaried workforce by 17,000 people in the last decade alone.

[Source: The Detroit News]
GM to cut 5,000 salaried workers originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 18:32:00 EST. The plant produces mid-size SUVs such as the Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X. Sales have decreased on all the models, leading to the inevitable cutbacks and GM's announcement that 340 hourly workers will fall on the chopping block. The layoff will see the facility maintain its two-shift schedule, but it will reduce output by 8 vehicles per hour. Completion of the reorganization is expected by mid-March.

[Source: Automotive News, sub. req'd]
GM announces layoffs for 340 Ohio workers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 08:04:00 EST. Production of full-size GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado pickups will be cut from 54.5 an hour to 45 an hour starting in September.

The plant employs 2,800 hourly workers and 300 temporary workers. GM spokesman Tom Wickham said Tuesday that an undetermined number of those temps would be the first to lose their jobs. The Detroit News was estimating about 500 total workers could be affected.

Wickham said the cuts were necessary due to a decline in full-size and heavy-duty truck sales. He also said there were no plans to throttle production at GM's other truck plants.

[Source: The Associated Press via Yahoo News]
UPDATE: GM will cut pickup truck production originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 16:41:00 EST.
