As many as 250 historically significant cars, trucks and concepts are slated to go under the gavel, a few are bound to be sold well under their true value, and wise bidders are planning ahead for just such an occasion. It seems that the auction house will not be providing specific information on many of the models ahead of time, even if they may differ from the production cars they're based on in significant but unseen ways. This being the case, a few savvy shoppers have retained the services of Mark McPhail, the recently retired manager of GM Performance Engineering. Perhaps we should keep him on speed dial ourselves, ya know... just in case.<br /><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20081218/NEWS03/812180364/1004/NEWS03">Lansing State Journal</a>, <a href="http://www.ideaologists.com/NewsReleases.htm">Ideaologists</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/30/gm-performance-manager-to-advise-barrett-jackson-bidders/">GM Performance manager to advise Barrett-Jackson bidders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 30 Dec 2008 08:28:00 EST. Since it's inception, the General Motors Heritage Center has never been open to the public. The center has a collection of nearly 800 cars of which about 200 are typically on display at any given time while others are loaned out to other museums or car shows. The facility includes 15,000 feet of racks filled with millions of pages of corporate archives documenting the first century of the company's history. The facility has been used for company meetings and special events occasionally opens to friends and family of employees and now GM is partially opening the doors to the Heritage Center. However, it won't be open to just anyone who wanders up to the front door of the non-descript building in a Sterling Heights MI business park. GM is making the facility available for car clubs and groups of 20 or more people. If you've got an event that you would like to hold at the Heritage Center send an email to the center for more information at gmhc -at- gm.com.<br /><br />Check our previous post on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/15/general-motors-heritage-collection-an-amazing-collection-few-w/" title="View General Motors Heritage Collection: An amazing collection few will ever see! on Autoblog" target="_blank">General Motors Heritage Collection here.</a>

Thoughts of what might occur to a pedestrian who was unfortunate enough to find themselves in the path of a moving vehicle never entered their minds. One of the inevitable features of any car design was a hood ornament. Jaguars had leaping cats, Rolls-Royce had the "Spirit of Ecstasy" and there were many others. <br /><br />The years following World War II ushered in what became known as the <em>Jet-Age</em>. The rear fenders of cars began to sprout fins modeled after aircraft rudders, while the leading edge of the hood often featured something that looked like it just popped out of a Flash Gordon serial. While perusing the collection at the General Motors Heritage Center the other day, I noticed that several adjacent cars were all adorned with futuristic looking aviation inspired trim. Enjoy a bygone era.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/">GM Heritage Center: Hood Ornaments</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/img_1658_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/img_1657_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/img_1656_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/img_1655_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gm-heritage-center-hood-ornaments/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/img_1654_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/13/general-motor-heritage-center-hood-ornaments-gallery/">General Motor Heritage Center: Hood Ornaments Gallery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 10:58:00 EST.
