Twenty years ago, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> debuted the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/chicago">Chicago Auto Show</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/06/fords-svt-celebrates-20-years-of-blue-oval-performance/">introduced the world to its high-performance skunkworks department</a>, known as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/SVT/">SVT</a> or Special Vehicle Team.<br />
<br />
Today, Ford celebrates SVT's platinum anniversary the only way it knows how: with another <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> variant. And as suspected, it comes in the form of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/05/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-convertible-caught-enjoying-the-weather-a/">a topless Shelby GT500</a>.<br />
<br />
Just as a refresher, at the 1992 show in Chicago the SVT Cobra put out 235 horsepower from its Vanilla Ice-approved 5.0-liter V8. Twenty years later, displacement has grown by less than a liter, but thanks to some 21st century tech and a massive supercharger, the 5.8-liter V8 in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible makes the same 650 hp (and 600 pound-feet of torque) as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">its coupe counterpart</a>, laying claim to the most powerful production V8 in the world.<br />
<br />
In addition to the carbon fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, transmission and axle, SVT fitted its own specially developed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, along with six-piston Brembo calipers squeezing massive discs up front.<br />
<br />
Like the coupe, the Bilstein setup is part of the Performance Package (why it's not included as standard is beyond us) and Ford will also offer a Track Pack that includes an external oil cooler, differential cooler and transmission cooler to keep temps in check when flogging the drop top around the tarmac.<br />
<br />
And before you ask: No, the GT500 coupe's 200 mph top speed doesn't carry over to the Convertible. Detroit in January isn't exactly the proper place to go topless in a 650-horsepower tire smoker, but that doesn't mean rumors of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> Convertible's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/29/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-convertible-to-debut-in-detroit/">impending debut</a> at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show">2012 Detroit Auto Show</a> aren't accurate. And these spy shots prove that the car is very much ready for its big unveiling.<br />
<br />
We're expecting the soft-top Shelby to pack the same 5.8-liter supercharged engine as its hard-topped sibling, which means the asphalt will be punished with those aforementioned 650 ponies along with 600 pound-feet of torque. For the coupe, that power equals a top speed of over 200 miles per hour.<br />
<br />
So, here's the big question: Will the 2013 GT500 Convertible be the least expensive way to a wind-in-your-hair blast at supercar speeds? While we all ponder that question, let's all take a gander at the spy photos in the gallery above. 	The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> has apparently rustled some snakes within <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general motors">General Motors</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/al oppenheiser">Al Oppenheiser</a>, Chief Engineer behind the mighty <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chevrolete camaro zl1">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> has officially made a statement about the newest member of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> family, saying that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gm">GM</a> wonderchild has encouraged <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> to come at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> with both barrels blazing. Oppenheiser says that the Mustang has been playing catch-up with the Camaro since the fifth-generation debuted in 2009, and that the GT500 is no different. The GM engineer points out that that the Camaro ZL1 will be track-ready right out of the box while its Blue Oval rival will require additional performance packages to stand up to a road course.<br />
	<br />
	"The days of 'no replacement for displacement' are over, and it's not enough to be fast in a straight line," Oppenheiser writes. We couldn't agree with that sentiment more, but we suspect it will still be hard to argue with the significantly lighter Mustang and its new 650 horsepower supercharged V8. As you may recall, the last-generation GT500 wasn't exactly slow around <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/virginia%20international%20raceway/">Virginia International Raceway</a>. We're packing up our cameras and laptops and heading out of the Los Angeles Convention Center, but before we seal the lid on the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show">2011 LA Auto Show</a>, it's time to reflect on our staff's favorite debuts of the past two days. Unlike previous shows, there was nothing here in LA that truly stood out as the clear Best In Show winner, but because of that, there were plenty of good arguments amongst the staff about the five best cars on display in Los Angeles.<br />

We won't give away the winner just yet (you'll have to <a href="/2011/11/17/editors-choice-top-five-2011-la-auto-show-debuts/#continued">click past the break</a> to see the results), but we'll say that the first and second place cars were nearly tied, with the Number One car only winning by one vote. We've got to admire the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a>. The vehicle could very possibly be the least-aerodynamic sports car on the face off the planet that's capable of knocking off 200 mph. How does it do it? Lots and lots of power. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> completely reworked the vehicle's drivetrain for 2013, starting with the engine. The larger 5.8-liter aluminum V8 now spits out a full 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque courtesy of a larger supercharger. Ford calls the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> the most powerful production V8... in the world. The muscle-bound Mustang looks plenty impatient lounging on the show floor of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/la auto show">2011 LA Auto Show</a>.<br />

Buyers looking for even more performance may opt for the GT500 Performance Pack, which throws in electronically-adjustable Bilstein dampers and a Torsen limited slip rear differential. Still not enough to satiate the go-fast itch? Good thing the 2013 GT500 is also available with a Track Package that bolts on an external engine oil cooler, transmission cooler and rear-differential cooler.<br />
<br />
Even better, the 2013 Shelby GT500 weighs 270 pounds less than its chief rival, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chevrolet camaro zl1">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a>, and manages to dodge the gas guzzler tax. The <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/mustang/">Mustang</a> has been an American icon for over 45 years, and now <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> is ready to unleash the most powerful lineup in this pony car's illustrious history. Since the Mustang is it's own kind of cool, Ford decided against unveiling it in front of the assembled crowds inside the Los Angeles convention center. Instead, the Blue Oval invited 800 of its closest friends to see the 2013 lineup at the Belasco Theater.<br />

Marketing boss Jim Farley took the stage to unveil the refreshed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">Boss 302</a>, the 420-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">GT </a>and the fresh-faced <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">V6 model</a>. Farley looked to the one and only Caroll Shelby to help unleash the 650-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">Shelby GT500</a>, which looks pretty darn awesome in Grabber Blue. Shelby appeared to be especially gleeful about the latest GT500, adding that this latest GT500 is "the one." Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Six hundred pound-feet of torque. Over 200 miles per hour. With specs like these, you don't need long-form introductions. This is the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>, and all we can say is, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/camaro+zl1">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> has officially been put on notice.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-ford-shelby-gt500/#photo-4606275"><img alt="2013 Ford Shelby GT500 engine" class="right border" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/11/13-2013-ford-shelby-gt500-1321234115.jpg" style="margin: 4px; float: right; width: 250px; height: 211px;" /></a>The heart of the new <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> stunner is a 5.8-liter, aluminum-block V8, complete with a larger, more efficient supercharger. Nearly the entire powertrain has been upgraded for 2013, including a new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. The cooling system has also been upgraded, and the new six-speed manual transmission now has a final drive ratio of 3.31-to-1 - optimized to handle the massive amounts of torque put down by the new engine.<br />

Further enhancements can be had in the GT500 Performance Pack, which incorporates SVT-designed Blistein electronic adjustable dampers with 'normal' and 'sport' modes and a Torsen limited-slip differential. What's more, the Track Package adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler. Like the current GT500, 19-inch wheels are standard up front (20-inch rollers are found out back) and a Brembo braking system keeps everything in check when its time to control all that force. The whole package weighs in at just 3,850 pounds - 270 less than the Camaro ZL1 - and Ford says it will not be subject to the dreaded Gas Guzzler Tax.<br />

	Visually, not too much has changed from the current GT500, save some minor aerodynamic tweaks like an ever-so-slightly revised front fascia with new air splitters, as well as a minimally tweaked rear end. Inside, it's the same levels of comfort and refinement that you'll find in the rest of the Mustang lineup, albeit with new Recaro front buckets.<br />

After decades of dominating the pony car sales charts, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Ford Mustang</a> has finally met its match in the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro/">Chevrolet Camaro</a>. Naturally, this high-profile segment, is one that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> is loathe to concede. After being infused with completely new engines in 2011, the Mustang will soon receive a visual refreshening that aligns this horse's looks even more with the range-topping <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Shelby GT500</a> model.<br />

Our spy photographers have snapped a Mustang GT prototype with just a thin layer of 3M vinyl hiding the changes. Up front, you can clearly see the GT500's influence in this Mustang prototype's protruding grille. Also note that the coupe has dropped the Mustang GT's circular, grille-mounted foglamps, as well as swapped out its galloping horse badge for a new logo that's been moved from the center of the grille to the side. Even the lower air intake is shaped like an open smile, just like on the current GT500. And, is that a splitter we see hanging off the car's chin?<br />

We can also see brand new projector beam headlights up front with some LED tech buried within, and out back, the rear end gets new taillights. That rear wing is also new, and the rear bumper has been slightly redesigned as well.<br />
<br />
Ford clearly hopes to imbue the Mustang GT with the GT500's aggressive looks, and these spy shots show they're on-track to do just that. Will it be enough to boost sales above the Camaro? We'll see. The more interesting question is once the Mustang GT looks like the GT500, what will Ford do with its most powerful pony car? Fans of large displacement and forced induction (isn't that everyone?) can officially rejoice today as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/04/uaw-ford-reach-tentative-agreement/">recently approved deal</a> between <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> and the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/uaw">United Auto Workers</a> has answered a question that's been on our minds ever since <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> upped the horsepower ante with its <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/camaro zl1">Camaro ZL1</a>. Yes, folks, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> will be blessed with a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine.<br />

While conventional wisdom has always been that the easiest way to increase horsepower and torque was to bore-and-stroke your way to more displacement, an interesting series of spy shots showing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/09/ford-shelby-gt600-gets-some-intercooler-love/">one conspicuously oversize intercooler</a> led some to believe Ford was ditching the supercharger in favor of twin turbos. Not so, apparently. Ford's latest contract with the UAW reveals that its Romeo Engine Assembly Plant will receive a $50 million investment to build the 5.8L supercharged mill.<br />
<br />
Naturally, contract talk doesn't include a whiff on horsepower or torque, but you can bet Ford is planning on eking out more than the 580 horses that Chevy has corralled from the 2012 Camaro ZL1. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/16/rumormill-2013-shelby-gt500-to-boast-over-600-horsepower/">Something around 600</a> seems like a safe bet, but we'll just have to wait for an official announcement from Ford. So much for the rumors that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gt500">Ford Mustang GT500</a> will turn twin-turbo. According to reports buzzing around the web, the meanest snake of all will <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/09/ford-shelby-gt600-gets-some-intercooler-love/">hold onto its supercharger</a> for the foreseeable future. Even so, that blower will supposedly ensure that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> will have a beast capable of besting the power figures produced by the menacing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro zl1">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a>.<br />

Currently, the GT500 is good for 550 horsepower, and some sources have indicated that the 2014 model will come to the table with at least a 20 pony bump in grunt. Even with 570 hp on tap, the vehicle isn't expected to be a complete redesign when it arrives in early 2013.<br />

Instead, a completely fresh <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> is slated to show its face in 2014 as a 2015 model. Specifics on that particular beast are murky at best, but chances are we'll hear more as the years tick down. Our army of spy photographers managed to snap a few photos of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/shelby gt500">Ford Shelby GT500 </a>strutting a new intercooler. If you take a close look, you can see piping through the upper and lower grille as well as the vehicle's mocked-up fog light openings. Chances are the new equipment is merely part of a scheme to make the vehicle's supercharger a little more efficient, though it's entirely possible that the big bad snake is rocking something exciting under its hood. Something like a twin turbocharged V8.<br />
<br />
Though we've been more than a little skeptical about notions of a forced-induction V6 or four-cylinder Ford Mustang model, we wouldn't be surprised to see the GT500 grow a turbo or two. There's no telling exactly what the engineers at Dearborn could come up with if they scrapped the old supercharger in place of a pair of turbos. Modern variable vane units have all but eliminated lag, and ditching the blower would simultaneously do away with heaps of parasitic drag on the engine. The internet is an amazing place. There's so much information available for free and people from across the globe can communicate instantly. A flip-side to the amazing power of the internet can be revealed by digging through any forum. While most forums are filled with people who enjoy discussing a shared passion, they also become home to folks who enjoy spouting off ridiculous falsehoods and creating a vision of reality that doesn't quite exist. That practice can invoke internet justice, and <a href="http://www.svtperformance.com/forums/smack-down-cafe-18/768947-what-happens-when-you-borrow-you-parents-gt500-driver-member-here.html" target="_blank">one member of SVTPerformance.com found out this out the hard way</a>.<br />

A video was posted to YouTube, which showed a man driving a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">Ford Shelby GT500</a> down a dark road. Amidst the howl of the car's supercharger, the occupants talk about what it would be like to hit a deer on this road... and then they hit a deer. The rest of the clip involves yelling, not safe for work language and the driver fleeing the scene after running an oncoming car off the road.<br />
<br />
The sleuths at SVTPerformance.com identified the driver as board member "Grant218" (later changed to "Grant Theft Auto"). Grant explained that he borrowed his dad's GT500, and the damage isn't as bad as it seems. After reading through many (<em>many</em>) pages in the thread, we find out that Grand <em>stole</em> the car from a man he knows, put over 300 miles on <em>the Shelby</em>(!) and then tried to return it and hide the damage.<br />

The crew over at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/inside+line">Inside Line</a> has manged to put together a test that any auto enthusiast should be eager to read about. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford's</a> entire lineup of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustangs</a> has something unique to offer, and IL wrangled up one of each different 'Stang on offer: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+V6">V6</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+GT">GT</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+boss+302">Boss 302 Laguna Seca</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a>. In the end, there can be only one...<br />

All four cars were flogged on a pair of tracks, including the 1.6-mile loop at Streets of Willow. The finishing order based on lap times was predictable, but the numbers are impressive across the board. The golden age of horsepower ended a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, right? Well, no. In reality, it seems that every new model year brings more and more ponies from the likes of the reborn <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/dodge/challenger">Dodge Challenger</a> along with the stalwart <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a>.<br />

According to the internet rumormill, that pattern isn't going to change any time soon. <em>Car and Driver</em> reports that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> will boast as much as 620 horsepower. Naturally, the powerplant providing all those ponies will be a supercharged V8, in this case bored out to displace 5.8 liters instead of the 5.4 we've been seeing for the last several years.<br />
<br />
<em>Car and Driver's</em> math tells us, assuming the power and weight estimates are in the ballpark, to expect a scorching 12.0-second quarter mile time from the 2013 GT500, a top speed that could be as high as 190 miles per hour and a sticker price of roughly $60,000.<br />
<br />
For what it's worth, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/09/2012-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-chicago-2011/">Chevrolet is estimating</a> that the supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine that will power its <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/zl1">Camaro ZL1</a> - the top run (so far) of Chevy's muscle car lineup - will put out around 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, that's all subject to change...<br />

It's easy to dismiss the muscle-car phenomenon as a fluke of American excess. With our miles of open freeway and sinfully cheap gasoline, the inexpensive, high-horsepower V8 machine was a creation that could have only come from our neck of the woods. But that doesn't meant the rest of the world doesn't appreciate of our contribution to automotive history. Just look at the thriving <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> community in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/poland">Poland</a>.<br />

A devoted group of pony car lovers recently got together for a little meet up and happened to cook up one of the best fan videos we've ever laid eyes on. There are plenty of special-edition Mustangs in the mix, including at least one Bullitt, a Shelby GT500 and even a P-51 Edition. But these horses aren't all standing around in a parking lot somewhere. Oh, no. <em>Motor Trend</em> is on a quest to determine the best budget supercar. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/nissan/">Nissan</a> stepped up to the challenge with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2011 Shelby GT500</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/corvette">2011 Corvette Z06</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/gtr">2012 GT-R</a>. Total cost of the vehicles used in this 1,585-horsepower shootout? $244,290... or $37,040 less than the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/17/2010-lamborghini-gallardo-lp-570-4-superleggera-first-drive/">570-horsepower $281,330 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera we tested in 2010</a>. Perspective, folks.<br />

This comparision is not about high-dollar exotics, however, because <em>M/T</em> is looking for the best sub-$100,000 performer. The 2012 Nissan GT-R develops 530 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6. The American muscle machines perfer V8 power with the supercharged 5.4-liter GT500 producing 550 horses and the 7.0-liter Z06 pumping out 505.<br />
<br />
The Shelby GT500 certainly represents the best bang-for-your-buck due to its $55,330 as-tested price tag. Yet both the Z06 ($98,010 as-tested) and GT-R ($90,950) offer equally appealing performance at a relative bargain.<br />
<br />
<em>Motor Trend</em> took all three super coupes to the drag strip and the Streets of Willow road course. There's so much going on at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/sema/">SEMA</a> it's all-too easy to miss a few things. And while there are a ton of Mustangs, one would think that this Shelby prototype would have caught our attention - particularly since we were aware of its existence. Back in September we reported that on some <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/07/new-shelby-models-could-include-v6-twin-turbo-gt500/">potential future Shelby models</a>, one of which was a 1,000 rwhp twin-turbo GT500. <br />
<br />
Nicknamed "Code Red," this particular GT500 was created in collaboration between Shelby American and Nelson Racing Engines - the same firm responsible for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/09/for-the-truly-insane-1800-horsepower-mosler-mt900s/">1,800 horsepower Mosler MT900S</a>. The heavily modified 5.4-liter V8 features twin 61mm Turbonetics turbochargers along with a dual fuel system that includes cells for both race and street gas as well as an electronic boost controller that can vary boost for each gear.<br />

If Shelby offers a production of the "Code Red" GT500, expect plenty of other goodies to be included like Baer 14-inch brakes, Shelby/Eibach adjustable suspension system, 9-inch Currie rear end, 10-point roll cage, and plenty more? Price tag? Shelby estimates that the package (car not included) would cost around $100,000.<br />

When you grow up in Detroit, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> is so much more than just another performance car. It's arguably the most iconic automobile born within these city limits, and anyone who's called the area home can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride while driving the Blue Oval's pony through the Motor City. It's like eating a hot dog at the ballpark - you can't explain why, but it just tastes better.<br />

At the tippy top of the Mustang hierarchy sits the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a> with its supercharged 5.4-liter V8, 550 horsepower and an exhaust note that will wake the neighbors. Our love for the GT500 has run deep since its debut in 2006, though most of that affection was never given to the convertible. The droptop Ford suffers from substantially more handling and rigidity issues than the coupe, and when you consider the added price that Ford charges to lob off the roof ($5,000, in this case), it can seem like a puzzling proposition.<br />
<br />
For 2011, Ford has tweaked the GT500's core, not to mention stiffening individual components of both the front and rear suspension setups. That, combined with a new electric power assist steering system, means this should be the most driver-focused GT500 yet. Thus, we put the top back and basked in the warm Michigan sun to rekindle our love with Detroit's most powerful pony car. This, friends, is our kind of end-of-summer lovin'.<br />

NASCAR's making moves, one of which is helping Germany's DTM series make the giant move to the U.S. The German touring car promoter ITM is in talks to run a 12-race calendar in the U.S. in 2013, with six races alongside Grand-Am events and another six alongside NASCAR events. The next generation of DTM cars will bow a year earlier, and they would run by themselves as opposed to joining a multi-regulation series in the U.S. The plan will certainly be welcomed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>, who will <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/15/bmw-returning-to-dtm-in-2012/">return to DTM</a> in 2012 after an 18-year absence.<br />
<br />
DTM is also spreading its wings the other way, having come close to getting Japan's GT500 class in SuperGT to run according to DTM technical regulations. That would put contenders like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/19/video-four-minutes-of-shear-supergt-bliss/">Honda HSV-10</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/08/the-time-has-come-unofficial-lexus-lfa-supergt-contender-render/">a potential LFA racer</a>, as well as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ferrari">Ferrari</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz">Mercedes</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lamborghini">Lamborghini</a> teams already there, against the best of the rest from Germany.
