As well-known as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan">Nissan</a> is for sports cars like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/370z">370Z</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/gtr">GT-R</a>, it's also known on racing circuits for its formidable competition machinery. In fact, Nissan has just enjoyed one of its most successful racing seasons yet, and on the back of that season, it is releasing a new customer racing car.<br />
<br />
The Nissan 370Z <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nismo/">Nismo</a> RC packs an array of competition modifications. Its weight has been trimmed to 2,954 pounds and its 3.7-liter V6 engine juiced up to 355 horsepower - just slightly more than the street-legal <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/17/first-drive-2010-nissan-370z-nismo-simply-rocks/">Nismo Z</a>. That power increase comes courtesy of a competition-spec exhaust and returned engine management. The RC also packs a race-spec clutch, flywheel, plus oil, transmission and diff coolers. Inside is a Recaro racing bucket with a six-point harness, Sparco steering wheel and carbon-fiber dash, plus a full FIA-regulation roll cage and fire extinguisher.<br />

The package was designed from the get-go to meet FIA GT4 regulations, as well as World Challenge GTS specifications and Nissan says it can easily be modified to race in the Grand-Am GS class as well. Heads up, weekend racers: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi">Audi</a> has officially pulled back the sheets on its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/tt">TT</a> GT4 Concept. Designed to be the next logical step in the company's customer sports program, the racer will supposedly bring a relatively low price tag to the table when it arrives as a production model in 2012, but for the moment, it's been confined to some demo laps at Shanghai's DTM over the weekend with racer Frank Biela behind the wheel.<br />
<br />
The racer comes complete with a 340-horsepower TFSI engine back by the company's S-Tronic DSG gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Buyers will also find a set of adjustable dampers on hand for improved tuning, as well as carbon fiber reinforced plastic skins on the doors, hood and trunk lid.<br />
<br />
How much will you be asked to pay for the privilege of owning such a piece of machinery? Chances of this vehicle making it to the States seem pretty slim, but Audi says that European buyers can look to fork over around &euro;120,000 (around $157k USD). That's probably a small bargain in the world of privateer ready-to-race cars, but it also goes some way toward reinforcing that people have a slightly different definitions of "affordable." The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/aston-martin">Aston Martin</a> Vantage GT4 has only been racing for two years, but in that time has garnered notable accolades: Wins at the N&uuml;rburgring 24 Hours, Spa 24 hours and this year's European GT4 Cup, just to name three.<br />
<br />
The Gaydon firm has made revisions to the 2011 model, incorporating lessons learned from the roadgoing V12 Vantage, including better aerodynamics and greater downforce, as well as a new option that includes racing-tuned ABS and a new traction control system developed by Bosch. No specific numbers were released, but Aston Martin says that it has reworked the GT4's 4.7-liter V8, as well, providing improved horsepower and torque numbers.<br />

To say that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lotus">Lotus</a> has its hands full would be a gross understatement. In addition to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/30/lotus-shocks-paris-motor-show-with-five-concept-debuts/">five new concept cars</a> which the British automaker and engineering firm unveiled in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/paris-motor-show/">Paris</a> this year, Lotus is also <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/20/to-f1-and-beyond-lotus-reportedly-considering-le-mans-gt-and-i/">expanding its racing programs</a> in a big way. The House that Colin Built <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/31/lotus-hires-former-ferrari-fiat-racing-chief-claudio-berro-as-ne/">expressed its intentions</a> to do so nearly a year ago, but as with the complete revamp of its entire product range, we didn't expect anything quite this drastic. Looks like we ought to be listening when the folks at Lotus speak.<br />
<br />
In addition to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/28/lotus-cars-and-lotus-f1-embroiled-in-naming-rights-dispute/">controversial licensing partnership</a> that led to the marque's return to Formula One, Lotus has announced a whole slew of racing programs upon which it is embarking on in the near future. First up is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/16/report-lotus-to-increase-involvement-in-indy/">the expansion of its Indy racing team</a> - operated in partnership with former Champ Car chief Kevin Kalkhoven's KV Racing - from one car to two. Cosworth will undoubtedly be dropped from the effort as the F1 team <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/13/goodbye-lotus-racing-cosworth-hello-team-lotus-renault/">switches to Renault power</a> (the team also announcing a partnership with Red Bull Racing to use its gearboxes and other technologies for next season), and Lotus will be developing its own aerodynamics package on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/14/breaking-indycar-announces-new-chassis-manufacturer-for-2012/">the new adaptable chassis</a> that takes to the grid in 2012. <br />

Moving beyond, Lotus is also teaming up with ART Grand Prix - champions of several single-seater feeder series - in both the GP2 and GP3 championships. (Lotus F1 chief Tony Fernandez meanwhile announced the launch of his own GP2 team running under the Air Asia banner.)<br />

Not enough? Lotus isn't stopping there. Based on the enthusiasm garnered by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lotus/evora">Evora</a> GT4, Lotus is working on both GT3 and GT2 versions of the car, as well as a GT2 racer based on the new generation of vehicles displayed in Paris, though they aren't saying which one just yet. (That may be largely a marketing decision though, as the vehicles share a common architecture.) Last but not least, Lotus is also crafting a purpose-built, closed-cockpit Le Mans Prototype conforming to the ACO's LMP2 formula. And he's going racing with it. Marek Reichman, the design director for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/aston-martin/">Aston Martin</a>, will be hopping into the saddle of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v12+vantage">Vantage</a> GT4 for his first shot at the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain. Reichman has gone fender to fender before, though he typically keeps to vintage club racing. This will be the first time he's stepped up to the 90-minute big boy leagues of his company's one-make series. Reichman won't be doing it alone, though. Chris Porritt, the engineering manager for Aston Martin, will be sharing driving duties.<br />
<br />
Porritt has helmed the mighty Vantage GT4 in the past, though most of his experience has been at the N&uuml;rburgring. We're thinking that if he can keep the car shiny side up around Green Hell, he should have no problem going toe to toe with the rest of the field. That doesn't mean that the competition is going to be a cakewalk for the team - so far this season, the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge has proven to be full of more than capable racers. The series is slated to kick off at Oulton Park on Saturday, August 21. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/11/aston-martin-design-director-gets-custom-vantage-gt4/#continued">Hit the jump</a> for a peek at the press release.<br />

Single-make customer racing series are an engaging experience for exotic sportscar-makers and their customers. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ferrari">Ferrari</a>'s <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/28/the-little-nurburgring-ferraris-in-their-natural-habitat-at-mon/">Challenge series</a> dates back to the 348 (succeeded since by the 355, 360 and 430, soon to be replaced by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/458+italia">458</a>). <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/porsche">Porsche</a>'s <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/26/pavlovs-bellporsche-reveals-prices-new-911-gt3-cup-racer-ahead-of-frankfurt/">Supercup series</a> has been at it since the early '90s and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lamborghini">Lamborghini</a> launched its own <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/26/lamborghini-super-trofeo-hits-the-racetrack-for-first-test/">Super Trofeo</a> championship just a couple of years ago. Even <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/maserati">Maserati</a>'s getting in on the game with its new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/06/maserati-granturismo-mc-unveiled-for-the-gentlemen-racer/">GranTurismo MC</a>. But despite its extensive competition in the various Le Mans Series around the world, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/aston-martin">Aston Martin</a> has been decidedly absent from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/15/poll-in-what-spec-racing-series-would-you-want-to-race/">the spec-racing scene</a>, the one exception being the company's Asia Cup that started in 2008. But that's all about to change.<br />
<br />
To give the broad base of customers who already own race-spec Vantages a chance to get back on track against equal machinery, Aston is launching its own British GT4 Challenge. The series is open to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/14/aston-martin-racing-reveals-new-vantage-gt4-to-replace-n24/">Vantage GT4</a> and N24, and will run this year at five tracks across the UK (including Silverstone) plus one at Belgium's famous Spa Francorchamps.<br />
<br />
GT4-spec Vantage owners pony up a reasonable &pound;12,950 (about twenty grand American) for the season, which includes hospitality, driving suits and full paddock support from Aston Martin Racing. Fuel and tires are extra, but Aston's trackside support will be so extensive that they'll even install a replacement engine on the spot in case you blow yours out. The 4.3-liter N24 owners feeling underpowered can also upgrade to the GT4's 4.7-liter engine to keep pace.<br />
<br />
While the winner of the existing Asia Cup earn a fully-sponsored season in the FIA GT4 Championship, the British champion gets a crack at test driving either the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/28/aston-martin-racing-vantage-gt2-unveiled/">Vantage GT2</a> or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/06/18/aston-martin-racings-dbrs9/">DBRS9</a> GT3. Now all we need is for Aston to launch a series in North America and we'll be set.<br />

For the first time in a long time, we sat down and played a racing game the other night. Fine, it wasn't a racing game -- it was the <a href="http://www.virtualgt.com/">VirtualGT racing simulator</a>. What did we learn? Georgia ought to pass a law against letting us onto Road Atlanta in a Porsche 997 Cup car. Also, instead of sitting on our buddy's couch and stuffing our face with Collisions: Pizza Cravers and Ranch flavored Doritos (a real flavor -- <a href="http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/doritos-pizza-cravers-ranch.html">we swear!</a>) while mindlessly hitting everything on the streets of Monaco in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/GT4/">GT4</a>, being in a race cabinet (and having a Cup instructor barking instructions in our ear) allowed us to pop off a 1:43 run around a 2.54 mile course. Not too terrible. And we're totally <em>sure</em> the cabinet added a second or two. Ahem.<br />
<br />
Sadly, those high-falutin' racing rigs cost a fortune -- $18k at the low end, and that's without a display of any sort. You'd have to be a Porsche Cup racer to afford one. Not so fast, say our pals over at <em>0-60</em>. In fact, they built a cabinet for Need For Speed: Shift and they're calling it the D.I.Y. R-Cade. First of all, how much will it cost you? $500, minus all the electronic stuff (which you probably already own anyhow). How long does it take? Not sure, but there are about 60 pages of instructions. We figure pretty long. Still, the end result is pretty cool looking, <em>and</em> you'd have your own racing cabinet. <br />

<br />Although BMW's M division may have arguably veered off course with the recent introduction of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/X5M/">X5M</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/X6M/">X6M</a>, well-to-do M-ophiles may have something to look forward to in the form of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/10/bmw-m3-gt4-to-campaign-in-nurburgring-24-hour-enduro/">M3 GT4</a> available to consumers.<br /><br />Campaigned at the 24 Hours of N&uuml;rburgring this past May, the GT4 variant of BMW's V8-powered M3 is fitted with all the race-ready kit you'd expect in something developed to tackle the Green Hell, including an Ohlins suspension setup, aerodynamic enhancements, a full roll cage, airjack system, race buckets and a modified engine and transmission. "It would be specifically for motorsport drivers," BMW's M division head, Dr. Kay Segler told Autoblog. Translation: Don't expect to see this car on the street - it's a trackday toy or competition-only machine.<br /><br />Although the trigger hasn't been pulled, Segler said it's being actively considered. <br />American fans of Nissan's fantastic new 370Z can order their cars in Chicane Yellow, but up until now, their counterparts in Blighty have been out of luck if they've wanted a sunburst Z of their own. Until now. That's because Nissan UK has cooked up a special new limited-edition (if unimaginatively named) 370Z Yellow. <br /><br />Apparently inspired by the Japanese automaker's European GT4 series racers, all Yellows will receive 19-inch forged RAYS alloys, a black leather and suede interior, along with illuminated door sill plates, special floor mats, and so on. Did we mention the bespoke lower body graphics? They remind us of less subtle, billboard-sized versions of the graphics packages on certain Porsche 911s.<br /><br />Nissan assures that there will be a "strictly limited volume" of Yellows for sale in the UK, with "exclusivity guaranteed." But tellingly, perhaps, the company isn't divulging just how many it plans to produce in the model's press release (available after the jump). <br />BMW is far and away the most prolific automaker at the annual 24-hour Nurburgring race, with 114 class victories over the event's 29-year history and almost one-third of last year's field comprised of Bimmers. This year, BMW's Customer Racing program will partner with Schubert Motorsport to bring out a BMW M3 GT4 to campaign in the GT4 class, with FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) drivers Agusto Farfus, Jorg Muller and Andy Priaulx joining two journalists from German magazine <em>Sport Auto</em>.<br /><br />The M3 GT4, which benefits from all the race-ready hardware you'd expect in a vehicle prepped for a 24-hour enduro, made its debut at last weekend's ADAC Westfalenfahrt at the 'Ring, taking the win in the SP10 class and finishing 30th overall. Aimed at the discerning enthusiast who'd prefer to keep their road-going GT in the garage, the MC is designed to compete in the GT4 European Cup class, with a full roll cage, carbon fiber body panels, plexiglass windows, upgraded brakes and suspension, along with lightweight rollers shod in racing slicks. Output for the revised 4.7-liter V8 hasn't been disclosed, but expect the MC to put out around 450 hp when it takes to the track. The cost? A cool 135,000 Euros. <br />KTM has performed well during the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/13/ktm-confirms-participation-in-gt4-with-x-bow/">X-Bow's campaign in the European GT4 Sports Light series</a>, winning the championship in its inaugural season. In fact, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/26/ktm-gt4-x-bow-revealed/">the KTM X-Bow</a> claimed the top three spots at the end of the 18-round series, and in the process, KTM's first four-wheeled street racer managed to beat out a slew of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/23/donkervoort-d8-gt-in-production-sales-begin-in-june/">Donkervoorts</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/search/?q=lotus+exige&amp;invocationType=wl-auto&amp;searchsubmit=">Lotuses</a>. German X-Bow driver Christopher Haase piloted the KaTooM to a number of victories and won the driver's championship in the process. Somewhat amazingly, the angular little orange and black roadster was even able to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/22/ktm-x-bow-takes-class-win-in-gt4-annoys-astons-and-vettes/">pick on</a> much larger and more powerful competition, like Aston Martins, Ford Mustangs and Corvettes. <br /><br />We think it's fair to call the X-Bow a success for KTM, which now looks forward to bigger and better things. Up next is an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/15/ktm-bringing-faster-harder-x-bow-to-geneva-in-2009/">even faster version</a> of its racer as well as a range of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/09/ktm-preparing-low-cost-clean-city-cars-and-suv/">city cars and off-roaders</a>. The team <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/26/ktm-gt4-x-bow-revealed/">campaigned a pair of X-Bows</a> at the Silverstone circuit in the UK and aside from getting a one-two podium finish in its class, the team mixed it up with the rest of the 16 GT4 contenders, including Aston Martin N24s, Chevrolet Corvettes and Ford Mustangs. Among the 400+ hp racers, the X-Bow placing seventh and eleventh overall in Saturday's race, and fifth and sixth on Sunday. As <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/13/ktm-confirms-participation-in-gt4-with-x-bow/">detailed before</a>, the GT4 version only receives a few modifications for track duty, including a steel rollover bar that replaces the production model's aluminum units, some added zylon fibers to cope with road debris, modified wheel covers and a Sparco integrated impact-absorbing head restraint system. The team will be operated by Reiter Engineering, the same outfit that worked with Lamborghini on the GT1, GT2 and GT3 races in previous years, as a way to remain focused on more consumer-oriented versions of the X-Bow.<br /><br />Loris Bicocchi, who helped develop the X-Bow and has tested numerous vehicles including the Koenigsegg CCR, and Catharina Felser, a former Formula Ford and Formula 3 participant, will campaign the race-spec X-Bow during the series. The competition version of the car has been modified to meet FIA regulations with steel rollover bars (versus the production model's aluminum units), a revised exhaust system that uses a racing silencer, extended wheel covers, added layers of zylon fiber that aim to prevent penetration by track debris and a slightly retuned suspension that can hold up to the rigors of wheel-to-wheel action.
