Law enforcement agencies are now required to obtain a warrant before attaching a GPS device to a vehicle. The Detroit News reports the Supreme Court unanimously ruled today that the Justice Department was wrong when it argued that its agents didn't need permission to track private citizens without their knowledge.

The case in question centered around Antoine Jones, a Washington, D.C. nightclub owner and suspected drug dealer. Police installed a GPS device on Jones' wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee, which eventually led them to a substantial amount of cocaine. Jones was then sentenced to life in prison.

But Justice Antonin Scalia wrote that installing the device constitutes a search under the Fourth Amendment. Specifically, Justice Scalia said, "The government physically occupied private property for the purpose of obtaining information."

In the Jones case, law enforcement agents had obtained the proper warrants to attach the device, but didn't manage to attach it within the 10 days specified in the warrant. The FBI accumulated 2,000 pages of data over four weeks by tracking the vehicle.
Supreme Court: Feds not allowed to use GPS on autos without warrant originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 16:01:00 EST.
For those of us testing dozens of in-car navigation and infotainment systems each year, J.D. Power's 2011 U.S. Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study comes as no surprise.

According to owners surveyed in the study, simplicity and ease-of-use are lacking in the majority of systems on the market, with "Address/street/city not found" topping the list, followed by difficulty inputting a destination, poor routing, ineffectual voice controls, a lack of street names and missing points of interest. Not to mention the most obvious issue: the inability to find the proper function in the menu system.

Additionally, with a growing number of automakers combining climate controls into the touchscreen, these systems are adding another layer of complexity with few tangible benefits.

Interestingly though, the Garmin-supplied system fitted to the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 - placing first and third, respectively, in consumer satisfaction - do combine many of the vehicle's climate control functions in a separate menu on the screen. So the issue isn't about incorporation, it's about execution.

Lining the bottom of the pack were a few Mercedes-Benz models (no surprise considering how long in the tooth COMAND is), the Jaguar XJ, Volvo XC90, Lincoln MKX and Toyota RAV4. And while the Clarion-equipped system (in the process of being phased out) in the Ford Flex, Fusion and Lincoln MKS all made it into the top 10, the TeleNav versions of the Ford Explorer and Edge - yes, the MyFord Touch equipped models - landed near the bottom. However, many of those issues should be rectified with the 2013 update, which includes faster response, better voice recognition and a mild UI overhaul. Hit the jump for the details and the complete rankings list.
Sesame Street is teaming up with TomTom to provide family-friendly navigation narration courtesy of some of our favorite muppets. Bert, Ernie and one very special rubber duckie have been so kind as to lend their vocal talents to TomTom navigation devices. The trio are in good company. Darth Vader and Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson have both stepped into the recording booth to give TomTom customers a little entertainment over a long drive. If you like the idea of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie leading the way, you can head over to the TomTom site to purchase the voice pack for $12.95.

That may seem a little steep to the penny-pinchers of the world, but listening to our childhood television friends may do much to diffuse road rage the next time we're stuck in traffic. Don't believe us? Follow the jump to check out a quick video of Bert and Ernie in the recording studio. We dare you not to smile.
Continue reading Bert and Ernie lend voices to TomTom, will guide you to Sesame Street

Bert and Ernie lend voices to TomTom, will guide you to Sesame Street originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 14:57:00 EST.
Those of you hoping to hear the boisterous voice of Jeremy Clarkson coming out of your TomTom GPS are going to be quite disappointed. As it turns out, part of the BBC's editorial guidelines state that none of the Top Gear presenters can endorse motoring products, and thus, having Clarkson screaming out of your TomTom is a clear violation of this policy.

Some 54,000 units of the Clarkson-ified TomTom have already been produced, with many already in stores. BBC Worldwide has stated that it will now donate all proceeds from the TomToms to the Children In Need charity. The BBC told UK's The Guardian that Jezzeh was in no way involved with setting up this deal and will not make any money from the partnership between BBC and TomTom.

Looks like drivers will now be forced to add in their own insults, sarcasm and humor to the TomTom sat-nav experience.
Clarkson contract blunder leads to cancellation of Top Gear TomTom GPS originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST.
Top Gear fans who go orgasmic at the first note of Jeremy Clarkson's dulcet tones will be happy to hear that TomTom has released a new GPS soaked in the world's favorite car show. As previously rumored, the TomTom Go Live Top Gear Edition sat nav features driving directions narrated by Jezza, as well as plenty of petrol-laced points of interest. Those include test tracks as well as locations featured in the long-running show. There are also model-specific start-up and shut-down screens that feature the Top Gear logo. That's fun and all, but the really great part is that the company's Live service offers real-time speed camera alerts. Handy.

The GPS also features a Stig mode, though the company isn't saying what that is or what it does for drivers. Some say the device just sits there on the dash and glares disapprovingly. All we know is, the device is available here in the U.S. as well as a host of other countries. Hit the jump for the official press release.
Continue reading New Top Gear edition TomTom satnav features Stig Mode

New Top Gear edition TomTom satnav features Stig Mode originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 11:17:00 EST.
If you're the owner of a fairly new General Motors product, you may want to take a close look at the most recent OnStar terms and conditions. As it turns out, the company has altered the parameters under which it can legally collect GPS data on your vehicle.

Originally, the terms and conditions stated that OnStar could only collect information on your vehicle's location during a theft recovery or in the midst of sending emergency services your way. That has apparently changed. Now, OnStar says that it has the right to collect and sell personal, yet supposedly anonymous information on your vehicle, including speed, location, seat belt usage and other information.

Who would be interested in that data, you ask? Law enforcement agencies, for starters, as well as insurance companies. Perhaps the most startling news to come out of the latest OnStar terms and conditions is the fact that the company can continue to collect the information even after you disconnect the service. If you want the info to be cut off all together, you'll have to specifically shut down the vehicle's data connection. If that sounds scary, you should check out a full breakdown of the new policies here.

*UPDATE: OnStar has released a statement in response to the dust up over its newest set of terms and conditions. These days, you need A-list celebs to sell pixelated fish and other playthings. The disembodied and slightly stilted voices of navigation systems appear to be going the same way, and Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson is the latest talent to contribute his voice to giving directions - ironic, considering he's made his disdain for GPS clear in the past.

According to the UK's Daily Mail, TomTom will unveil a device next month in which the famously ornery BBC star will advise you to execute handbrake turn - going all, well, Clarkson, when you miss your offramp. If he ever gets to be too much, apparently the unit will allow you to get directions from The Stig, which we expect will sound like not getting any voice directions at all.
Jeremy Clarkson voicepack coming to TomTom navigation originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 09:01:00 EST.
The Supreme Court is set to rule on whether or not law enforcement officers need a warrant in order to track a suspect's vehicle with a GPS device. The case centers around Antoine Jones, whose vehicle was bugged for a month without his consent or a go-ahead from the justice department. The police have argued that such tracking shouldn't require a warrant because the location of Jones' vehicle on public streets is public knowledge. Advocates arguing against that stance say that the comprehensive surveillance constitutes an unjust invasion of privacy.

No one is disputing the fact that Jones was, in fact, selling cocaine when his vehicle was monitored.

Lower courts have sided with Jones' attorneys on the privacy issue in the past, though there is a precedent for allowing evidence obtained through warrantless GPS tracking to be upheld. The issue seems to be exactly how long law enforcement continues the tracking. Either way, law enforcement, prosecution and defense attorneys will all have a close eye on the outcome of the Jones case.
Supreme Court to hear automotive GPS tracking case originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 14:29:00 EST.
We have to remind ourselves to breath deeply at these high-tech junctures in the road. Porsche is still first and foremost a remarkable sports car company that we all love and adore for so many reasons. In recent years, yes, Porsche has challenged all of us with some product and tech moves that have caused a groundswell of debate. But the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen based company still continually makes the lion's share of enthusiasts dream big.

We have just been brought to the company's hardcore research & design center in Weissach in the verdant farm country just outside of Stuttgart to drive special Panamera S test mules equipped with the most recent iteration of an ECU-software development that Porsche knows is going to make people like us fret. Until we actually experience it first hand.

Adaptive Cruise Control is a pretty quotidian option these days, especially on larger Porsches that get driven regularly in busy highway traffic. It's a good idea that's been serving owners faithfully since its introduction.

But we've just tried the next phase in ACC development, called ACC InnoDrive, short for Innovative Drive. It's officially part of the Intelligent Drive Strategy sub-group within the Porsche Intelligent Performance umbrella. The InnoDrive system takes ACC into areas of our driving lives that a Porsche shopper would never have imagined from the brand just 10 years ago. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, maybe BMW, you bet. But the winningest company in racing?
Continue reading 2014 Porsche ACC InnoDrive tested... hello, Big Brother?

2014 Porsche ACC InnoDrive tested... hello, Big Brother? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 15:00:00 EST. The Chinese component maker has been producing primarily aftermarket head-units since 2002. But as of today, it's getting in bed with the big boys.

Foryou is teaming up with Intel to create the next generation of aftermarket and OEM, integrated infotainment systems powered by the chip manufacturer's Atom processors. The low-power, ultra-efficient chipsets are set to render everything from 3D GPS navigation to in-car internet access.
The ongoing spat between a company known as LightSquared and a number of high-profile combatants including the Defense Department, the Federal Aviation Administration, John Deere and General Motors' OnStar service continues unabated.

The Federal Communications Commission, which has to approve of the company's proposed broadband network, has placed LightSquared under some tight deadlines and has asked the company and its many detractors to put together a joint report on how to proceed with the network without interfering with GPS systems already in place.

In a series of 46 tests performed by the National Executive Committee for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation & Timing, the LightSqaured service disrupted communications from both OnStar and GPS devices used by the likes of the U.S. military.

GM and its OnStar subsidiary believes a workaround is possible. Says OnStar spokesperson Vijay Iyer, "We'd love to be part of that testing and validation and we believe there is potential mitigation solutions specifically geared toward that bandwidth that's being used out there."

Assuming these companies and agencies can all get their issues worked out, LightSquared hopes to have its service commercially available to 100 million subscribers by 2012. A series of hearings on the matter have been announced for June 23rd by two subcommittees from the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Stay tuned.
OnStar asks FCC to investigate LightSquared over GPS interference originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 18:28:00 EST.
Recently, we learned that sixth-generation Chevrolet Corvettes are out to get us, and now it seems that our beloved GPS has turned on us. Consumer Reports calls it "Death by GPS", and it's a term that refers to folks who wind up in dangerous or fatal situations because they blindly follow the directions provided by their electronic navigational aid.

A Canadian couple was recently in the news when their GPS led them astray and into a remote part of Northern Nevada. The husband set out for help while the wife remained with their vehicle for seven weeks until being discovered (still alive) by a group of hunters.

We live in an age where we rely quite heavily on the technology around us. It's no surprise then that we put blind faith in our personal devices, yet we should take a step back to see them for what they really are. The GPS is a tool to aid with navigation, yet it's not an infallible machine. Data (and a clear line of sight to orbiting satellites) is a major requirement for a navigation unit to function at its best. More remote areas have less data because of the infrequent amount of traffic they receive, thus a navigation unit would have less information with which to provide feedback.

If you're behind the wheel of a vehicle, and you're heading into unfamiliar territory, it's a good idea to remember that your navigation system is part of a team. Your brain should also be part of that team. Click past the jump to watch a CBS News clip discussing the "Death by GPS" phenomenon.
Continue reading Stranded Canadian couple latest victims of "Death by GPS"

Stranded Canadian couple latest victims of "Death by GPS" originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 12:32:00 EST.
There's a whole world of radio frequencies and space-based signals that most of us don't care to know much about. But when it comes to our cell phones and GPS units, what we don't know may just hurt us... or at least hurt our ability to find the nearest fast food restaurant.

Translogic reports a signal conflict between a Reston, VA 4G network by a company called LightSquared and the GPS systems that we've come to rely on could be a very bad thing. Opponents ranging from GPS makers to the U.S. military object to the LightSquared network, which is said to have too close a signal to GPS signals. And since GPS is satellite-only and the 4G system will use both satellites and thousands of local towers, the 4G service could drown out GPS signals. Without GPS, the military, first responders and trucking companies could have a difficult time serving, saving and monitoring, which could endanger lives. That's not good.

LightSquared is reportedly saying the two systems can both work together, and the company has the Federal Communications Commission on its side. For the near term, though, government officials have reportedly told the Associated Press that LightSquared systems won't be turned on until there are assurances that GPS signals won't be lost.
Jealous of your Android-toting friends with their slick Google Maps Navigation service? Well, a new GPS app has arrived for the iPhone 4 and it's also free... for 30 days.

TeleNav has released a new version of its GPS app for the iPhone and in addition to providing the usual navigation and POI searches, the constantly-updating app allows users to get restaurant and service ratings, reviews and other information directly through the app. But naturally, there's a rub.

The app is free for 30 days and after that you're charged either $21.99 for a year of service or pay-as-you-go for $2.99 a month. If you opt to keep those few ducats in your pocket, you can still use the GPS mapping and local search - the same as the pre-installed Google Maps application. And if you're packing an Android device, the TeleNav app is available as well, but only if you're hooked up with Verizon and are willing to shell out $19.99 a year before the end of the month. After that, the service goes up to $39.99 each year. Hit the jump for the full details and pick up the iPhone app at the Apple App Store or the Android version through the Android Market.
Continue reading TeleNav GPS comes to iPhone 4... for a price

TeleNav GPS comes to iPhone 4... for a price originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 08:58:00 EST.
It's one of the great ironies of our age that many of the devices that were crafted to make our lives easier are more prone to catapulting us into fits of blinding rage. Anyone who's been led astray by satellite navigation knows exactly what we're talking about. But what if your devices knew that you were upset with them and could alter their behavior accordingly? Researchers at Cambridge University are working on new technology that could create emotionally-sensitive robotics to reduce driver distraction and curb road rage.

The tech uses a range of sensors to detect everything from facial expressions to hand gestures and even the user's tone of voice. Researchers are hoping that in the future, vehicles will be able to uses similar data to decrease the volume of the radio or mute cell phone calls if they sense that the driver is upset or agitated. Still, don't expect your next new car to be able to sense your emotional state. According to The Daily Telegraph, mainstream application of the tech is still long way off.
Navteq's interest in Trapster is obvious: One of the world's largest mapping and sat-nav software companies needs more crowd-sourced traffic information. With over nine million downloads, Trapster has both the reach and programming knowledge to expand the depth and breadth of the firm's traffic data.
According to Autoblog sources familiar with the matter, five companies were interested in acquiring Trapster, and an outright bidding war was waged by three of the startup's suitors. In the end, Navteq brought home the brass ring for an undisclosed amount.

Trapster was established in 2003, growing considerably once it received funding in March of 2009 which allowed it to bring on a handful of employees.

Trapster users can expect their service to remain intact, and with the engineering resources of Navteq integrated with the current apps, traffic, road hazard and maybe even police data stands to increase considerably.
Exclusive: Navteq acquires Trapster originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 15:27:00 EST.
DrivingRoad.com is a new site that aims to cater to those who enjoy that early morning weekend blast up a canyon road. The members-only website offers information on the best driving roads around the country. Simply offering maps and road information doesn't seem like it should require a fee, which is why DrivingRoad.com posts downloadable route information for GPS devices.

The content isn't simply "go here, have fun." Pace notes are incorporated into the GPS route guidance and your device can now act as a co-driver. Information is audibly relayed so you know what type of turn you are heading into and what to expect on the other side. This data isn't cultivated simply by user-driven reviews, either - a team of editors establish all the content so the format is consistent across the site.

Founder Andrew, states:
"DrivingRoad.com was born out of a passion for driving great cars on great roads. That passion is unexplainable to most, but when experienced, the thrill is like none other in the world. That idea of thrilling, unrestrained freedom is what we are all about."
If you are a fan of finding that great driving road, this sounds like the ideal tool for you. Currently, the site is launching in beta and only has California roads ready for download. Once the system has been fully tested through the beta launch, DrivingRoad.com will be release road information for the rest of the country. See for yourself in the video, after the jump.

You can register for membership in three ways: Pay a yearly rate of $30, a quarterly rate of $11, or a monthly rate of $5. However, DrivingRoad.com has extended a special offer to Autoblog readers; you can sign up for a yearly membership for $20 if you go through this link: DrivingRoad.com Membership.
We would call this a radar detector, but it appears to be much more than that. The Passport iQ, in addition to detecting radar and laser, has a built-in GPS unit, Bluetooth connectivity, red light and speed camera notifications, speed limit information and live traffic updates. All of this information is displayed on a five-inch, full-color touchscreen.

The price of the Passport iQ is $649.95, which, assuming it works as advertised, is peanuts compared to a few speeding tickets and a bump in car insurance rates. Escort offers the unit on a trial basis for free, for 30 days. It also comes with a 90-day free trial subscription to Escort's Defender Database, which comes loaded with thousands of speed trap locations.

Mopar, the motor parts division of Chrysler, has enjoyed a nice long run providing parts and accessories for the entire Pentastar family. Whether you own a muscle car or a muscular off-roader, the Mopar catalog has you covered. Now it's venturing into a new arena with the launch of the Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System, or EVTS.

A vehicle is not an inexpensive asset and it's smart to want to protect it. The EVTS allows you to do just that. There are three plans available - Base, Silver and Gold. Each offers an increasing level of protection and service. The Base plan features a GPS vehicle locator, real-time tracking if your vehicle is stolen and a $1,000 theft-protection warranty. Silver ups the ante by including text-based alerts for parents. If a set speed limit or distance cap is exceeded, the owner gets a text message ("OMG, Billy juz hit 107 mph! Hez gonna get spanked, LOL!!!"). In addition to the warning alerts, the Silver plan provides arrival and departure notices, a map of locations visited, an available 24/7 emergency service contact, automatic theft notification and an on-board panic button. The top-tier Gold plan has all of those features but adds unlimited online tracking and a concierge service. The concierge allows the owner to call for directions, make reservations and assistance for other personal queries.

The Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System starts at $495, not including installation. The Silver and Gold plans require an additional yearly subscription priced at $149 and $249, respectively. Quite wisely, Mopar built the system to be transferable and upgradeable. Check out the press release after the jump for more details.
Did you know that someone out there is snapping pics of the deceased critters? His name is Ron Ringen and his friends refer to him as Dr. Roadkill.

According to The New York Times, Ringen is not a "unique" artist trying to turn a profit but rather a retired veterinarian helping wildlife researchers. His goal is to log enough data (animal type, location, etc.) to better understand the impact of roadways on the surrounding animal populations. This information will go a long way in developing new methods of preventing or reducing animal/car interactions.

Ringen has found and photographed over 1,400 animals, and after he gets his shot, he then records the location in a GPS device. The animals he has found have ranged in size from tiny sparrows to a 1,500 pound black bull.

Mr, Ringen is not the only one scouring the blacktop for roadkill. There are volunteers across the state assisting in the capture of information. WildlifeCrossing.net has nearly 300 registered users and they have information on nearly 7,000 dead animals. The California program is doing well and it has recently added a second state, Maine, to their website.

If you have some spare time, a camera and a GPS device you can help track the pattern of roadkill incidents. Safer roads equal a better driving experience, and that's something we can all get behind.
