Ford Racing is continuing to launch its assault on all forms of motorsport with the upcoming launch of the 2010 Boss 302R Mustang to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Boss 302's 1970 Trans-Am championship. No photos of the car have been released quite yet, but we do have plenty of information thanks to a leaked letter to Ford dealers. Like the FR500S, FR500C, FR500CJ and other Mustangs available from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog, the Boss 302R is for off-road use only and will be built in very limited quantities. Just 50 are planned for production at a starting cost of $79,000.

Two versions of the 302R will be available, with the base package designed to compete in various SCCA and NASA classes and the upgraded version built to Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series specifications. The base Boss 302R includes a 5.0-liter four-valve V8 pushing out an estimated 400 horsepower as well as a six-speed transmission, race-spec suspension, brakes and tires, and safety equipment including a roll cage and race seats with safety harnesses. The Grand-Am spec version also gets a sealed high-output race engine, seam-welded body, racing fuel cell, a data acquisition system and more for a cost of $129,000.

Ford Racing is currently taking orders, and judging by sales of their other competition Mustangs you will need to order immediately if you want to get your hands on one. Follow the jump for more information and detailed specifications of the 2010 Ford Racing Boss 302R.

Ford Mustang NASCAR Nationwide Car - Click above image to enlarge

Hold on to your butts, people. Ford Racing and Roush Fenway Racing have unveiled their new stock car based on the poniest of pony cars. Prior to this, Ford teams in NASCAR have driven Fusions. Well, all right, none of them were actual Fusions or will be actual Mustangs. Rather, they'll be normal stock cars like everyone else in NASCAR drives that are covered with enough stickers and fake grilles to make you think that you might be looking at a Mustang from the stands. Man, "stock car" has really become a contradiction in terms.

Now you won't see Mustangs turning left next week in Charlotte at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The new car will compete in four races next year and only in the Nationwide Series, not the Sprint Cup. As such, it won't be based on the Car of Tomorrow platform that the Sprint Cup series uses, but rather the newer, different Car of Tomorrow platform designed specifically for the Nationwide Series. This first new Mustang to race in the Nationwide Series will be the No. 16 Con-way Freight Mustang driven by Colin Braun for Roush Fenway Racing. Is it enough to make us love NASCAR? Not quite, but if we had to race a bathtub on wheels, we'd pick this one.

UPDATE: Sorry about image, fixed now.

As the only American automaker not recently put through a government-sponsored bankruptcy, it comes as little surprise that Ford has taken over the spot long held by General Motors as the Official Sponsor of the NHRA. The first sign of dissension in the ranks came earlier this year as GM's bankruptcy filing ended the contracts the automaker had previously forged with Cagnazzi Racing, KB Racing LLC, Kurt Racing and Pedregon Racing to provide cash, parts and support vehicles.

This new multiyear agreement between Ford and the NHRA means that for the foreseeable future, all official vehicles used by the racing organization will now carry the Blue Oval badge, including trackside safety vehicles. For its part, Ford seems pleased with its newly prominent role within the drag racing community. Brian Wolfe, Ford's North America Director of Motorsports, said in a statement:

We're very excited to be partnering with NHRA on this program. We see this as a very good business proposition in terms of being able to actively reach out at-track and online to the NHRA fan base in ways that we haven't been able to do in recent years. We'll be able to allow that fan base to see and experience some of our great new products at-track while also partnering with the successful Motorcraft and Quick Lane program to give fans a look at the total Ford ownership experience.

The current production manifold works very well with all kinds of engine modifications, but once the revs hit 6,500 rpm, it completely falls flat. The new manifold is designed to support a bump of that redline up to 7,500 rpm. The manifold doesn't really add much power on its own, but it does allow other mods like camshafts, valves and exhaust systems to take advantage of more engine speed.

Ford will be building tooling over the next few months and running production prototypes toward the end of summer. The manifold should be on sale later in the fall. Ford hasn't yet set pricing for the new manifold but it may come in at about $600-700. Mike Sutton from Car and Driver who drove a 2009 GT fitted with the new manifold said the engine easily revved beyond 7,000 rpm, something impossible with a stock modular V8.
Ford Racing to introduce new intake manifold for modular V8s originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. Needless to say, we loved the track pack upgrades as we blasted through the canyons near Malibu. Unfortunately for early buyers of the 2010 'Stang, the Track Pack was a late availability option. Fortunately, buyers don't have to wait much longer as the Track Pack is slated to finally arrive this summer.

If there is one important lesson to be learned from the premium German automakers, it's that having lots of personalization options can be highly profitable. With that in mind, there are a seemingly infinite number of parts available from Ford Racing including both go-faster bits and visual accouterments. The gold 2010 that won the Ford Racing invitational this past weekend was equipped with a variety parts including a functional "shaker" hood scoop. Another offering from Ford Racing is the FR3 handling pack which includes an inch lower ride height, stiffer springs, stiffer sway bars and retuned dampers for $1,335. Thankfully, unlike most aftermarket parts, the official stuff from Ford Racing comes with a full warranty, and upgrades are also available for both V6 and GT models. As befitting a powerplant from the Blue Oval, this new block will be able to accommodate a range of classic displacements from 351 to 427 to 460 cubic inches.

Based on the architecture of the popular Windsor 351 but blessed with the more robust 2.75-inch main bearings of the old Cleveland block, Ford designed the new Boss 351 block with strength in mind through 4-bolt main caps, screw-in freeze plugs, splayed main bolts, siamese bores with engineered coolant cross-drilling, front cross-over lifter oiling, and diesel-grade iron with 41,000 psi tensile strength.

Unlike many engine blocks designed solely for racing, the new Boss 351 features a street-capable cooling design and is therefore just as suitable for vehicles intended for cruise night at the local hangout as it is for the drag strip. Its $1,999 suggested retail price isn't going to break the bank, either.
At today's third annual Ford Racing Invitational at Milan Dragway in Michigan, the automaker announced the availability of a new body-in-white based on the 2010 Mustang. The bare body shells will be available to racers looking to build Mustangs for all kinds of classes. Ford will start taking orders for the shells starting in mid-July and running through the fall. In order to avoid having to carry inventory, the shells will be built in batch in late fall and then delivered in December.

In addition, a variety of interior trim kits and wiring kits will be available to meet the needs of racers depending on the rules of the class they compete in. Ford is planning to offer the shells annually for at least the next several years based on the same schedule of orders in mid-year and deliveries in December.

Gallery: 2010 Mustang body-in-white

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

[Source: Ford]
Ford to offer 2010 Mustang body-in-white for racers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:57:00 EST.
At last year's SEMA show, Ford unveiled the latest Mustang to join the Ford Racing stable, the FR500CJ Cobra Jet. The purpose-built drag racer came standard with go-fast parts from the Ford Racing catalog, including a 400 horsepower version of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 (de-tuned to meet specifications needed for NHRA's AA Stock class) and a drag-specific wheel and tire combination. The 2009 model was a success both with customers and on the track. Ford Racing sold the entire run of fifty cars in less than two weeks, and it won its very first race at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA back in February.

Building on that success, Ford Racing announced today that it will be building a 2010 version of the Cobra Jet, with production to begin during the fourth quarter with deliveries taking place in early 2010. The base price is expected to be less than $75,000, and once again production will be limited to just fifty units. Like the 2009 model, the 2010 Cobra Jet will be modified with all Ford Racing parts including the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that is now rated at 425 horsepower. Perhaps the most exciting news is the availability of an optional 475 horsepower aluminum block motor that we dearly hope will somehow find its way into a production car. Follow the jump for the press release from Ford Racing, and look for more details and photos to come around SEMA in November.

Gallery: Ford Mustang FR500CJ Cobra Jet

[Source: Ford Racing]
Continue reading Ford Racing announces plans for 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet

Ford Racing announces plans for 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST.
The current NASCAR top speed record sits at 212.089 mph and was set by Bill Elliot at Talladega Superspeedway in a 1987 Ford Thunderbird. Brent Hajek apparently figures it's about time that 22-year-old record is topped. Next Wednesday, May 13th, Hajek will once again put Bill Elliot behind the wheel of a Ford at the famed Talladega oval in Alabama, only this time, the vehicle in question will be a Mustang FR500C modified to run on E85.

This particular Mustang Cobra Jet has already managed to clock a 252 mph top speed at the Salt Flats in Bonneville, so we can't imagine there will be any problem setting a new record. Of course, there's nothing environmentally friendly about lapping an oval track at high rates of speed for the fun of it.
1967 Ford Mustang hardtop convertible custom - Click above for an image gallery

According to this eBay seller, this is the only 1967 Ford Mustang ever fitted with a retractable hardtop. As we've never seen one before (or one wearing butterfly doors, for that matter), we'll give the auctioneer the benefit of the doubt.

In any case, this restomod 'Stang has been comprehensively reworked, including a new Ford Racing 302 crate motor, along with a new Tremec T5 gearbox, a fully reworked suspension and a set of four-wheel discs hiding out under the American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels.

Of the staffers we surveyed here at Autoblog, we're not crazy about the paint or the doors, but the retractable fiberglass top unit from Mustang Plus is something we can't help but find interesting, particularly if this conversion was done to a donor car that wasn't originally terribly collectible (non numbers-matching, etc.). Admittedly the lines of the top don't blend with the rest of the design as nicely as a stock hardtop's roofline does, but that's to be expected with conversions like this. Besides, both the engine bay and the underbody are incredibly sanitary - certainly cleaner than they were the day this 'Stang rolled off the assembly line.

The seller says that the droptop conversion is something of an homage to a concept Mustang model that Ford originally considered building back in 1967. According to the listing, the Blue Oval invested some $250,000 in exploring the concept, only for it to get nixed by Henry Ford II because it couldn't be motorized. A quarter century later, retired Ford designer Ben J. Smith apparently devised the system seen here.
As the saying goes, records are meant to be broken. For Vaughn Gittin Jr., that record was the world's longest drift. This past December, Gittin and 0-60 Magazine took a road trip across the United States in a 2010 Ford Mustang GT that also included a stop at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to break the record. The previous milestone was 4,137 feet, but Gittin believed he could surpass that and went about seeing how long his set of Falken Azenis ST-155 tires could withstand constant opposite lock. As it turns out, they lasted a little over two minutes before completely running out of tread, resulting in a run of 6,285 feet, or 1.19 miles. While the results are still pending with Guinness, we'll go ahead and crown Gittin as the record holder. Hit the jump to watch the video. Thanks for the tip, Alan!

[Source: 0-60 Magazine]
Continue reading VIDEO: World's longest unofficial drift set in stock 2010 Ford Mustang GT

VIDEO: World's longest unofficial drift set in stock 2010 Ford Mustang GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Mar 2009 20:29:00 EST.
Ford's FR500 Mustang turnkey racecars are off to a great start in 2009. The FR500C took two of the three top spots in the Grand-Am Koni Challenge opener at Daytona, and this week at the NHRA Winternationals the FR500CJ Cobra Jet captured a debut win in the AA Stock Eliminator class.

The win didn't come without its challenges, though, as rain delayed the competition for several days and made for an inconsistent racetrack. The victory seemed to be fated, however, what with the original Cobra Jet also winning its debut back in 1968 at the Winternationals with legendary racer Al Joneic behind the wheel. As the name implies this one is built at Ford's Romeo MI engine plant alongside the the other 5.4L supercharged V8s used in the Mustang GT500. This fully dressed crate engine forms the basis of the Shelby Super Snake and the upcoming limited run Cobra Jet drag car. In its current form the engine puts out 605hp thanks to the installation of a new supercharger.

The supercharger is an Eaton 2.3L unit for four lobe rotors. The rotors have 160 degrees of twist. If those specs sound vaguely familiar, that because it matches the unit GM is installing on the LS9 engine for the ZR1 Corvette. This one is of course not street legal and is intended for off-road use. At 605hp and 550lb-ft, Ford claims this is the most powerful off the shelf modular motor yet. At a list price of $18,150 it may also be the most expensive running almost the same price as a base V6 Mustang. The FG01 V8 Supercar will be officially unveiled at this weekend's race in Melbourne, where it'll entertain with some demo laps and then reside in the pits. According to Ford, the race car was designed to maximize driver safety while minimizing teams' operating, maintenance, and repair costs. Best of all, unlike the "stock" cars run in our various NASCAR series, Australia's V8 supercars actually bear more than a passing resemblance to their production counterparts -- four doors and all. There's no mistaking the fact that this car is derived from the Falcon XR8. Plus, it has a Giant Effing Wing that makes the apparatus hung off of some Pikes Peak hillclimb cars look like the ducktail on a '73 Carrera RS. Awesome. The FG01 will go into battle against its Holden counterparts next season.

Gallery: Ford FG01 V8 Supercar

[Source: Ford Racing Australia]
Continue reading Aussie Ford FG01 V8 Supercar unveiled

Aussie Ford FG01 V8 Supercar unveiled originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jun 2008 10:29:00 EST. In case you've forgotten, the Mustang FR500S is the $75,000, 325-horsepower racing car introduced at SEMA and offered directly to customers by Ford for use in the new single-make Ford Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup series. Starting this May at Road Atlanta, a series of eight Challenge races will take place in support of larger Grand-Am, HSR and NASCAR regional events, culminating with a September doubleheader at Miller Motorsports Park, for which the series and trophy are named.

Last weekend, the FR500S owners made a pilgrimage to the racetrack in Salt Lake City, UT where they attended performance driving school, participated in seminars about the series, and, most importantly, took delivery of their racers. Kudos to the pair of drivers who strayed from the norm, opting for black and red cars instead of the white chosen by everyone else. Once all the talking ended, the group headed out to the track for open practice sessions in their cars. May's not that far off, and the next time this group of racers gets together, they'll be competing for championship points. If you want to see the cars in action, we've pasted the Mustang Challenge schedule after the jump.

Gallery: Ford Racing Mustang FR500S

[Source: Mustang Challenge]
Continue reading First Ford Racing FR500S cars reach customers' hands

First Ford Racing FR500S cars reach customers' hands originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 15:57:00 EST.
If there's anything that the Shelby GT500 lacks, it's definitely not power. At an MSRP of just over $40k, it has more horsepower per dollar than just about any car out there. The boys over at Ford Racing and Roush, however, thought that it could use a little bit more. The two have developed a supercharger upgrade for the GT500 that pushes horsepower to just over 600 while keeping a 1 year/12,000 mile drivetrain warranty. This will most likely be the supercharger used for the GT500 KR as well as the base supercharger for the Shelby Super Snake. Pricing is set at $5,600 and the blower can be purchased through Roush or a Ford Racing distributor.

The latest one is not the just announced Shelby GT500KR (shown above) that bowed at the New York Auto Show earlier this month. Rather, StangsUnleashed.com has published a press release that reveals Shelby Automobiles and FoMoCo will hook up yet again to produce a limited number of GT500 Super Snake coupes in late 2007.

The Shelby GT500 Super Snake coupe will come standard with a Ford Racing Supercharger on its 5.4L V8 that bumps the Mustang's already prodigious power numbers up to 600 horsepower. While that engine will come with a full factory-backed warranty, there will reportedly be other engine options that include a 725-horsepower motor that comes without the blessing of the factory (no warranty). Other mods include a Ford Racing Handling Pack that adds adjustable dampers, lower springs, bigger stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace. The brakes are of course bigger and fit snuggly behind a set of Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels.

Check out more info and the press release after the jump.

Thanks for the tip, Drew!

[Source: StangsUnleashed.com]
Continue reading Another one, seriously? Last month we told you that three Ford GTs were being raced by Matech, and after its first test at Dijon, Ford's most premium super car looks to be ready to compete against the best Europe has to offer. The Matech Ford GT posted a time of 1'20.611, finishing .185 behind the overall fastest tester, the Ascari KZ1-R. Driver Christophe Bouchut tabbed the GT as "easy to drive" and called the car "well built".

MyVideo has footage of the Ford GT in action at Dijon, and it looks quite at home at the track, sounding like the super car that it is. We hear the flames coming out of the exhaust of the GT during the practice run are in fact not the product of a Power Stroke diesel, so there is no reason to be alarmed.

Check out the very well-produced video of the Ford GT at Dijon after the jump.

[Source: Fiagt3.com]

Gallery: Matech Ford GT

Continue reading More on the Ford GT entrant to GT3

More on the Ford GT entrant to GT3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 12:33:00 EST. One interesting fact it reveals is that Ford Racing celebrated its 100th anniversary 18th months prior to Ford Motor Company's big centennial blow out, because in 1901 Henry Ford beat Alexander Winton in a race held at a Grosse Pointe racetrack. Ford sold the car he used, the trophy he won and solicited some venture capitalists in the stands that day to start Ford Motor Company.

The main message of Episode 12 as it pertains to racing is that Ford doesn't plan on leaving the track anytime soon. Not only does racing offer opportunities for trickle down technology in the areas of performance and safety, but is there any better marketing for Ford than seeing a Blue Oval cross a checkered line?

[Source: Ford Bold Moves]
Ford Bold Moves, Episode 12: Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Sep 2006 14:09:00 EST.
