Unlike the quintessentially American pony car, which has been in nearly continuous production since its inception way back in 1964, the Capri nameplate has been conspicuously absent from European showrooms since 1986 - making it ripe for a remake.

According to the fearless rumormongers at Auto Express, the next Ford Capri may be right around the corner. In this guise, the Capri would basically be a three-door hatchback version of the Ford Focus with a sporty take on Ford's so-called Kinetic design language. The car would be earmarked to do battle with the revived Volkswagen Scirocco and Renault's latest Mégane Coupé.

Inside, the new Capri would share the same basic guts as the Focus and feature the latest version of Ford's Human Machine Interface. Underhood would sit the buyer's choice of an EcoBoost gasoline-fed four cylinder in either 1.6-liter or high-performance 2.0-liter sizes - or perhaps one of Ford's TDCi turbodiesel engines mated up with a Powershift twin-clutch gearbox.

If there is indeed any truth to these rumors, we can expect the next-gen Capri to debut at an unknown auto show sometime in 2010.

[Source: Auto Express]
Rendered Speculation: Ford Capri to return next year? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 May 2009 10:26:00 EST. Now that the Volkswagen has brought back the Scirocco (in Europe at least) Ford looks set to create a coupe off the Focus platform with the old name. Unlike another rendering we saw last month, this one doesn't have the rear fender vents, but sticks with the current fashion of front fender openings (or at least the appearance of openings). The style of this rendering takes the kinetic design language of Ford's Euro line and applies it to a shooting brake-style coupe very similar to the Volvo C30 (which also sits on the Focus C1 platform) and mixes in hints of the Mazda RX-8. At least it's all being kept in the family. If this new Capri does happen, it likely won't appear before the early years of the next decade, although a concept could appear somewhere in 2009.

[Source: AutoExpress]
Rendered Speculation: Another take on a new Ford Capri originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 May 2008 09:32:00 EST. Waylon was the narrator on the original Dukes of Hazzard TV show as well as the singer of the theme song. "Little do the Duke boys know..." begins the story of this "car-painted" homage to the Dukes. You see, a London artist by the name of James R. Ford has taken his 1981 Mk III Ford Capri and turned it into a General Lee look-alike. Well, if you squint from a block away, maybe.

The "paintjob" on this particular replica is actually a mosaic covering that uses 4,342 scale model cars. James apparently made a global appeal for toy cars for his project, and received donations from as far away as Australia. Although his car received its fair share of attention before, "The General Carbuncle," as James calls it, is now on a whole new level since completion. While nothing can truly replace the original, even the modern Charger version we've discussed before, it's great to see the Duke spirit alive and well.

[Source: Hemmings]
Car covered in 4,342... other cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 15:08:00 EST.
