If you've been wondering exactly what <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> has in mind for the next-generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/falcon">Falcon</a>, look no further than the recently revealed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/new-york-2011-2013-ford-taurus-and-taurus-sho-bow-in-the-big-ap/">2013 Taurus</a> for a few clues. Ford design guru <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/j%20mays">J Mays</a> has officially made it clear that the look of the sedan will be transposed onto several of the automaker's other products, including models like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mondeo">Mondeo</a> and Falcon. The crew from Go Auto spoke to Mays at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">New York International Auto Show</a> last week where the designer said that the corporate look will still allow each model to flex its character.<br />

Mays said that the design was heavily influenced by vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a6">Audi A6</a> and that the new trapezoidal grille design on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/taurus">2013 Taurus</a> will allow the vehicle's face to be easily applied to a range of products. Even so, don't expect to see exact carbon copies across the dealer lot. Mays made it clear that the design can be modified to deliver everything from an aggressive visage to a more subdued look.<br />

When a car comes with a 48-page press release, well, you know its maker has some special things in mind for it. The 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> Mondeo, in five-door and wagon styles, is just such a car, with The Blue Oval calling it "the most stylish and technologically advanced Mondeo ever." Visually, the car's main lines haven't changed, but the details have been made sharper: a sleeker front bumper with new LEDs and more aggressive lip, the twin character lines down the side, the chrome trim all around the windows and the new chiseling in the rear valance.<br />
<br />
Inside is the familiar story of upgraded materials wrapped around new techno bits. Ambient LED illumination falls from overhead, where also resides a new woven headliner. Driver aids include Lane Departure Warning system, Auto High Beam, Driver Alert, Smart Regenerative Charging and Active Grille Shutter, which opens and closes the grille aperture automatically to promote either cooling or increased aerodynamic efficiency. <br />
<br />
Under the hood are new engines, including the Mondeo's first crack at Ford's 237-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder EcoBoost. That will be an option alongside the current, 203-hp version. There's also a reworked 2.2-liter Duratorq TDCi diesel putting out 197 hp, the most powerful such engine yet.<br />
<br />
It goes on sale as soon as next month at the same starting price as the current Mondeo, &pound;17,295 ($26,842 U.S.), although the Titanium trim gets bumped up &pound;200 to &pound;19,945 ($30,958 U.S.). If this drawing proves accurate, it looks like the new midsize models will combine a lot of what we see in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/focus">2012 Focus</a> at the front end with a greenhouse and rear stance that actually looks more like the current <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/taurus">Taurus</a>.<br />

The Fusion was Ford's first model to adopt the automaker's now ubiquitous three-bar grille design, but this rendering finally dispenses with that look in favor of something a little more <a href="http://www.ford.co.uk/Cars/KineticDesign/mdp=v1204941954768">Kinetic</a>. We don't know if the production model will go this way or perhaps use the modified perforated version adopted by the latest Taurus and <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/explorer">Explorer</a>. <br />
<br />
The new Mondeo and Fusion will probably debut sometime later in 2011 and come to market early in 2012 as a 2013 model. <br />

Where to? He's leaving the Blue Oval to join the deep blue sea, taking over as CEO of Bavaria Yachtbau, a German builder of sailing and motor yachts.<br />
<br />
While his industry and title will change, the aim of his job won't: turn compelling ideas into profitable products. Having done that with three of Ford's best known vehicles in just ten years, Bavaria Yachtbau could have made a great score, and Ford has a massive gap to fill.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford of Europe</a> has dropped the first official photos of the refreshed 2011 Mondeo, along with some details on the mechanical updates. The only substantive visual change is a reshaped front fascia with a larger trapezoidal lower grille similar to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fiesta">Fiesta</a> and the upcoming 2012 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/Focus">Focus</a>, as well as reworked driving lights. <br />
<br />
Behind that new grille Ford has added the same type of active shutters the Focus is getting to restrict air-flow at higher speeds or colder temperatures, reducing turbulence and aerodynamic drag. <br />
<br />
The rest of the engine compartment is occupied by two new powertrain options, including a more powerful 237 horsepower version of the 2.0-liter Ecoboost inline-four that debuted earlier this year. At 179 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions, the new Ecoboost will have the same fuel consumption as the lower power unit and 20 percent less than a V6 of similar power. This more powerful unit is likely the one that we will get in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/edge">Edge</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/explorer">Explorer</a> for 2011. All of the Ecoboost engines are mated up a six-speed dual-clutch Powershift gearbox similar to the unit that just debuted in the Fiesta in North America.<br />

The second new engine is a reworked 2.2-liter diesel inline-four that now puts out 197 hp, a 12 percent bump from the previous edition. The new Mondeos will will be shown publicly at the Moscow Motor Show in August and go on sale in the fall.<br />

But ahead of its big reveal, spy photographers have caught the new Mondeo out in the open, and while the basic shape hasn't changed, there's something far more interesting under the hood. <br />
<br />
The major stylistic upgrades are up front, where the Mondeo's fascia picks up a few cues from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fiesta">Fiesta</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/2011-ford-focus-unveiled-u-s-and-euro-models-finally-unite/">2012 Focus</a>, including a larger lower grille and slimmer upper section. The front foglamps have been re-shaped and a strip of LED running lamps tie the design into Ford's B-segment hatch. <br />
<br />
At the back, the tailgate gets a subtle re-shaping above the license plate pocket and it appears the lights have been modified under the camo tape. The most important changes will be in the engine compartment, where the Mondeo will get the new 2.0-liter Ecoboost inline-four and the Powershift dual-clutch transmission. Expect all the details to be revealed shortly ahead of the Paris show this fall.<br />

Earlier this year, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/19/ford-to-launch-facelifted-mondeo-until-global-mondeo-fusion-repl/">we reported</a> that <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> will be giving its European-market <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/mondeo">Mondeo</a> a slight facelift in order to keep things fresh until the all-new global <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/fusion">Fusion</a>/Mondeo replacement arrives around 2014. The next-generation car, reportedly being developed in America as you read this, will be practically the same in all markets, building on the automaker's "One Ford" global product strategy. We've already seen the first implementations of this in the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/fiesta">2011 Fiesta</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/2011-ford-focus-unveiled-u-s-and-euro-models-finally-unite/">2012 Focus</a>, so we have relatively high hopes about what the next-gen Fusion/Mondeo will have in store.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, our spies have caught a mostly uncovered Mondeo prototype hanging out near Der N&uuml;rburgring, sporting revised headlamps and a trapezoidal lower grille, much like what we've already seen on the new Focus. Out back, revised taillamps (possibly with LEDs) are on hand, showing that Ford's new C-segment stunner has had a lot of influence on the sedan's rear, as well. Our spies indicate that the revised Mondeo will share many of its powertrains with the new Focus, including new EcoBoost offerings. Expect the production model to make its official debut later this year at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/paris-motor-show/">Paris Motor Show</a>.<br />

The interim Mondeo, pictured in the leaked photo on the right, will receive some minor adjustments to its appearance and specifications in an effort to keep it fresh, like the new Galaxy and S-Max minivans, until the new model arrives.<br />

The next-gen Mondeo, however, will join the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fiesta">Fiesta</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/detroit-2010-next-gen-ford-focus-a-c-segment-savior/">new Focus</a> as Ford's third new global car, replacing the Mondeo overseas and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/fusion">Fusion</a> in the North American market. According to reports, the new Mondeo/Fusion is being developed in the United States for expected simultaneous manufacturing - with few adjustments to local tastes - in the U.S., Europe and China.<br />

<br />Since taking the reigns at FoMoCo, Alan Mulally has made it clear that one of the keys to Ford's resurgence is to leverage its assets abroad. Specifically, he wants to utilize the automaker's platform development in Europe to maximize engineering and manufacturing efficiency, creating several global models. While we're still waiting for Ford to ditch the old Focus platform for the Euro model's underpinnings, the next major implementation of Mulally's plan will come in the form of the next Ford Fusion, which will use the current Mondeo platform.<br /><br />The CD3 platform, which is derived from the Mazda6 and underpins the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, will be abandoned in favor of the Mondeo's EUCD platform and will be the foundation for Ford's global mid-size/CD-segment vehicle. Ford of Europe has been tasked with reworking the platform for the U.S., which has been internally dubbed CD4. However, it isn't merely North American plants that will be changed over, but American plants. The <em>Journal</em> doesn't give any further indication of where those plants might be or what those cars might be, only saying that the strategy could be revealed during Ford's Q2 earnings announcement this Thursday. But we'll say again: come on, Mondeo! Coltrane E-brake turn away from profitability, the Blue Oval's global efforts are becoming increasingly important for its survival. The plan going forward is to utilize small and medium sized vehicles from Ford's European arsenal globally. In North America, the cars will be spiffy, though Ford will be robbing Peter to pay Paul on that count -- spreading the costs of America's premium cars over the breadth of the entire program's worldwide scope. <br /><br />According to <em>Automotive News</em>, we're getting a big list of Euro-Ford based cars in the near future. The Fiesta will slot in under the Focus, and will share a new platform with Mazda. Also on the Fiesta's underpinnings could be a small crossover or minivan. The Euro Focus will finally get here in 2011, when the next generation drops. 2012 will bring the C-Max, a Mazda 5-ish people mover. The Fusion moves to the EUCD platform, though we hope it doesn't grow too much, lose its joyous demeanor, or come up short on fuel economy. Dubbed "the most desirable Mondeo yet" by Ford, the Titanium X Sport will be available either as a saloon (sedan) or estate (wagon) and be powered by Ford's 2.5L turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine or its 2.2L TDCi diesel mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. New 18-inch alloy wheels, side skirts and chrome dual exhaust tips add a premium punch to the visuals, while the interior benefits from red stitching on its leather seats, as well as a cow hide-covered steering wheel and shifter. You'll find no wood veneer on this car's instrument panel, as aluminum inserts and piano black inlays give the Mondeo's domicile a more stark and modern feel. There is a "sports suspension", but it appears that the Titanium X Sport is more show than actual go. It's something Ford fanboys have been demanding for some time, and yesterday Mulally officially confirmed that the next-gen Focus and Fusion would be global vehicles, sharing platforms with their counterparts across the pond. This will be in addition to the B-class car that's coming in the form of the new European Fiesta small car that will slot below the Focus in Ford's U.S. lineup. <br /><br />The amount of overlap between Ford in the U.S. and Ford of Europe was one of the first things that surprised Mulally when he arrived at Ford exactly one year ago. This has been a popular pastime for automakers of late, as LWB versions of sedans from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/11/10/cadillac-to-debut-china-only-sls-at-beijing-show/">Cadillac</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/28/china-getting-long-wheelbase-bmw-5-series/">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/04/11/chinese-get-long-wheelbase-a6/">Audi</a> and others have surfaced as psuedo-limos for the Chinese market. <br /><br />The picture of the stretched Mondeo was apparently found on the Chinese forum <a href="http://soulkk.spaces.live.com/">SoulImage</a>, and shows an obviously-lengthened Ford Mondeo sedan with a longer wheelbase to accommodate its extended rear door. It's a bit strange to see cars that have just debuted going through the taffy puller and coming out with different proportions than the press photos, especially before we have yet to see the real thing in person, but this Mondeo manages to still look handsome and stylish even with the extra inches. We managed to get our act together for this week though, and in episode 59, Dan Roth fills in for Damon Lavrinc, who's in Geneva. Alex and Dan recount their visit to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/28/consumer-reports-announces-its-10-top-picks-of-the-year/">Consumer Reports</a> track day, which provided insight into the organizations testing methods and showed that there are real car guys within the belly of the beast. A great time was had by all, and the CR folks were eminently gracious. <p>Daniel Craig, the next James Bond, has already endured his fair share of controversy, and now the poorguy will have to while away the opening sequence in <em>Casino Royale</em> in a Fiat W190 bulldozer. This word, afterwe we reported last month that he'll also be driving a <ahref="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/04/mondeo-ford-mondeo-007-set-to-drive-mass-market-ford-in-casino/">FordMondeo</a> in the film.</p>
<p>But don't shed a tear for Daniel Craig. We're quite sure that he'll still get to shackup with some ridiculously hot beauty in an exotic locale, bide his time with lots of too-cool spy gear, and save theworld in his free time.&nbsp;Oh, and we're quite sure all the <ahref="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/25/product-placement-war-heats-up/">product placement</a> in the film will resultin a sizeable paycheck for the inconvenience of it all. Besides, 007 can always ditch the ditch-digger (and the BlueOval rep-mobile) and drive off into the sunset in the Aston Martin he's also scheduled to drive. Life is tough, eh,Craig?</p>
<p><em>Casino Royale</em> is slated for a November release.</p>

It's clear looking through the heavy camo of the spy shots that the next Mondeo will have an <ahref="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/09/14/ford-iosis/">Iosis</a>-inspired face. Whether or not the rest of the Mondeowill look as good as this artist's interpretation remains to be seen.
