1967 Ferrari 330 P4 - Click above for a high-res image gallery

A few years ago, RM Auctions arranged a private sale at the Ferrari factory to help the Maranello firm clear out some of their various race cars, prototypes and other motoring effluvia that had begun to clutter up the cavallino campus. The sale was so successful (and fun) that the auction house decided to do it again. And again. For this year's Leggenda e Passione event, they just picked up a vehicle that might have several of us calling Alitalia to check airfares. In cooperation with Sotheby's, the company will be auctioning off an ULTRA-RARE AND HUGELY VALUABLE LE MANS PODIUM-FINISH FERRARI 330 P4! The caps are theirs, not ours, but the emotion behind it is shared. These things don't come up for sale very often and when they do, it usually takes quite a few digits to secure them.

The particular P4 in question is chassis number 0858, a 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 that happens to be one of only three original P4s built. There were others that were converted from P3s, but this is one of the factory P4s. This very car won at Monza and claimed third at Le Mans, where it was piloted by Lorenzo Bandini and Willy Mairesse. Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon drove it later at Brands Hatch, where they clinched the manufacturers championship for Ferrari behind the wheel of this beast. It will be the star at the May 17 auction, along with a gorgeous Testa Rossa and a number of other historic Ferraris and Maseratis. Pierre Scerri began building his dream car in 1978. Fifteen years and 20,000 hours later, he finally had his dream: a Ferrari 312PB he could put in his dining room. Not just any 312PB, but a 1:3 scale, fully functional 312PB. Fully functional as in it has a 100cc 12-cylinder engine that starts and runs with a working gearbox connected to a wooden knob-topped shifter in the trademark Ferrari gate. Even the tiny gauges accurately report engine information.

Scerri took three years just to make the drawings for the car and then made every single piece himself. That includes the Firestone tires and every engine part down to the valve springs. Scerri even taught himself to make glass so he could recreate the exact pattern in the headlights' glass.

When the model master starts the tiny Italian's hand-built engine, it even produces that well-known Ferrari "music." All that's needed now, as a YouTube commenter says, is a "1:3 scale Stig."

The video is from a 1998 episode of "Jeremy Clarkson's Extreme Machines." Scerri has since begun construction on another 312PB, a 330P4 and a 250 GTO.

James Glickenhaus' Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina

Ultimatecarpage, with the permission of owner James Glickenhaus, has posted the first three officially sanctioned photos of the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina. The Enzo-based one-of-a-kind tribute to the classic Ferrari 330 P3/4 was not scheduled to be revealed until later this month, but leaks on the web spurred Glickenhouse to action.

The official unveiling is still scheduled for later this month, but until then, the owner has allowed Ultimatecarpage to post three photos. No, it isn't as gorgeous as the P3/P4 -- nothing is. What it is, however, is fantastic. Modern-looking for sure, the car's fenders, roofline, and rear clearly harken back to the P3/P4.

Built with the full cooperation of Ferrari, Glickenhaus' car is a fitting tribute to the revered original. We look forward to July 29th when the full set of images will be released. We have one suggestion for Mr. Glickenhaus, direct from the Autoblog "Wishful Thinking" department: next summer, please send this car to Goodwood and have it follow your original P3/4 up the hill. What a thrill that'd be!
