Its national goal of 120 vehicles appears to have increased to 142 according to an article in the Miami Herald which discusses the Florida addition. Armada, an "integrated group mainly engaged in bus tourism" with more than 5,500 buses running, is going to purchase 207 hybrid Eaton buses. The buses come from the same company that recently signed a large deal with Coca Cola. The powertrain is made up of a 6-cylinder diesel Cummins unit and a 44 kW electric motor. The buses will be delivered by Eaton from the U.S. but will be mounted completely in China. Guangzhou already has a test fleet of 30 hybrid buses.
The tax credits that the federal government offers for buying hybrid vehicles are tied to sales. As the sales of any given model exceed 60,000 units total, the tax credit is phased out. The Toyota Prius is no longer eligible for federal tax credits, although some states still offer money back. Fortunately other manufacturers haven't yet sold as many hybrids as Toyota and are still eligible.
Eaton Corporation has launched production of their new hybrid drive powertrain for medium trucks. Several hundred of the units will be built this year for installation starting in 2008 by truck makers like International, Peterbilt, Kenworth and others. Over 220 trucks have been produced over the last several years for field testing that has accumulated more two million on road miles.
