<br />The future of the Dodge Viper has been in question since the summer of 2008, when it was reported Chrysler was considering <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/report-chrysler-may-sell-the-dodge-viper-rather-than-kill-it/">selling the rights to their halo sports car</a> instead of killing it all together. Initially, there seemed to be plenty of interested parties, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/14/saleen-roush-potential-buyers-for-expandable-viper-range/">including Roush and Saleen</a>, but the dwindling economy led to just <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/dodge-reportedly-gets-no-takers-for-10m-viper-franchise-will/">one lowball offer from Michigan-based Devon Motor Works</a>. Even after the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/report-viper-plant-first-to-restart-after-bankruptcy/">Viper's production facility re-opened last month</a>, it was still assumed that the 600 horsepower sports car would up for grabs. Not anymore.<br /><br />Today, Chrysler announced that the Viper program is no longer for sale and that it will be continued to be produced past the end of the year at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. There was no mention as to why the decision was made or what will happen beyond 2010, but for now, the Viper is safe. The official press release doesn't offer much information, but you check it out <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/10/you-had-your-chance-chrysler-says-the-viper-program-is-no-longe/">after the jump</a>, along with a video from Chrysler discussing the decision and giving brief history of the Viper.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/">First Drive: 2008 Dodge Viper ACR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong style="font-style: italic;"><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/10/you-had-your-chance-chrysler-says-the-viper-program-is-no-longe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You Had Your Chance: Chrysler says Viper program is no longer for sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/10/you-had-your-chance-chrysler-says-the-viper-program-is-no-longe/">You Had Your Chance: Chrysler says Viper program is no longer for sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 17:05:00 EST. <br />According to court documents filed by Chrysler, there is but one lone official offer for the firm's Dodge Viper automotive business, and it is well under the $10 million asking price that the bankrupt automaker has been seeking. If a suitable buyer isn't found, it's likely that the Connor Avenue Assembly plant where the Viper is manufactured will be closed down this December.<br /><br />The sole $5.5 million bid came from Devon Motor Works, a small boutique coachbuilder based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that has plans to launch a new supercar of its own called the Devon GTX, which we presume is based on the underpinnings of the Dodge Viper. The GTX is scheduled to make a run at the N&uuml;rburgring lap record for a car currently in production (currently <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/video-dodge-viper-acrs-record-ring-lap-two-views/">held by a Dodge Viper ACR</a>) sometime in July, after which it will be officially debuted at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours.<br /><br />Chrysler first started putting out feelers for its Viper line last August, and the automaker still claims that it "has been approached by a number of parties interested in purchasing the business," though it's now clear that it's rather short on actual realistic offers. At this point, Chrysler is said to be looking into Devon's offer to verify that the small company has sufficient resources to close the deal. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/">Devon Motor Works GTX renderings</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/devon_gtx_rendering_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/devon_gtx_rendering_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/devon_gtx_rendering_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/devon_gtx_rendering_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/devon-motor-works-gtx-renderings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/devon_gtx_rendering_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.freep.com/article/20090528/BUSINESS01/905280470/1014/rss13">Detroit Free Press</a>, <a href="http://www.devonmotorworks.com/index.php">Devon Motor Works</a>, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090527-714008.html">Wall Street Journal</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/dodge-reportedly-gets-no-takers-for-10m-viper-franchise-will/">Dodge reportedly has one lowball bidder for Viper franchise... but is it enough?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 14:26:00 EST. <br />Chrysler has been out <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/report-chrysler-may-sell-the-dodge-viper-rather-than-kill-it/">shopping its Viper line</a> since August of last year, and reports now indicate that there are at least three interested parties that have made offers for America's other sports car. So far, there's no word on who those suitors may be, but <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/14/saleen-roush-potential-buyers-for-expandable-viper-range/">past rumors</a> had indicated that both <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/saleen">Saleen</a> (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/02/breaking-saleen-inc-sells-off-most-of-its-assets/">not likely</a>) and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/roush">Roush</a> were interested.<br /><br />When the announcement was initially made that the automaker was considering offloading Viper as a brand. The prevailing thought was that the move could save the car from extinction; now, the tables have turned and it's generally acknowledged that Viper's sale may actually help save its struggling parent company. The income from selling the sportscar unit could help bolster the report due to Congress by the end of March regarding Chrysler's long-term viability, but the automaker doesn't expect to have anything finalized by D-day.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/">First Drive: 2008 Dodge Viper ACR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2008-dodge-viper-acr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/viperacrfd_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090203/ANA02/902039951/1197">Automotive News</a> - Sub.
