Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty to merge into one vehicle

News out of Toledo is that Chrysler plans to drop either the Jeep Liberty or the Dodge Nitro within four years and merge the two vehicles into one. These two 'utes are built on the same exact platform, use basically the same engines and are built in the same Toledo plant. There is no good reason for both of them to exist, which makes us wonder why they ever did in the first place and why it will take three years to correct. Regardless, considering that Jeep will always be the off-road brand, it would make most sense to keep the Liberty name going. Losing the Nitro, meanwhile, might actually help Dodge improve its image as a volume performance brand.

This convergence of duplicate vehicles is part of Chrysler's Project Genesis plan. Under the plan, dealers will begin to offer Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles under the same roof. Other nameplates that are or should be converged include the Jeep Compass/Jeep Patriot and Dodge Durango/Chrysler Aspen, the latter of which could see themselves replaced by a new model with Jeep underpinnings.

Employees at Jeep's factory in Toledo, Ohio reported back to work this week after two months of mandatory downtime. The good news is that they still have their jobs; the bad news is that they've been told to expect another four weeks off before the end of the year. This time, however, the shutdowns will be scheduled in week-long intervals instead of covering an entire four-week period. The slowdown of SUV sales has been widely covered and the Jeep brand has not been immune, including its bread-and-butter Wrangler model that had proven extremely popular a short while back when the first-ever four-door version was unveiled. Of course, back then gas was below $3 a gallon. Besides the Wrangler, Jeep also makes the Liberty and Dodge Nitro at the Toledo plant.

Chrysler No. 56 on 101 Dumbest Moments in Business list

Fortune has called the notorious, dog-frying Dodge Nitro commercial done by BBDO Netherlands the 56th Dumbest Moment in Business. If you initially missed this story and are jjust hearing about the spot for the first time, you might think Fortune iseither picking on Chrysler or that it was an exceedingly smart year for business, because how could a car commercial be that dumb? Then you'll watch it and understand.

We continue to laugh at the absurdity that several groups of really smart people gave that commercial an "A.O.K.!" If they just would have gone with the idea that lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice, they might have been all right. And the point they were trying to make was obvious after the first hit -- but really, folks, does no one at BBDO Netherlands own a dog or get Atlanta Falcons football games on satellite?

Chrysler pulled the ad (long before it made the Fortune list), saying it "didn't have full knowledge of the ad's existence." We'll set aside the issue of how you only have partial knowledge of an ad. The other claim could have been that it was meant to be a Europe-only ad -- but at this point, if the ad people still need more lessons in The Internet Goes Everywhere 101, then making 'shocking' commercials is probably the least of Chrysler's concerns. Still, we're kinda surprised that this is one of the dumbest things in business all year...

Chrysler recalling over 80,000 Wranglers and Nitros

Chrysler is issuing a recall for 80,894 examples of its hot-selling Jeep Wrangler and not-so-hot Dodge Nitro. The recall will require the power module for each vehicle be reprogrammed to prevent a situation that could cause a brief interruption of electrical power to the engine and instrument panel. This interruption has been reported to cause stalling in 180 separate complaints that have been received by Chrysler. It's only a brief stall, however, and if the vehicles are moving at the time, their engines will reportedly immediately restart. Of course, owners will not be charged for the service to their vehicles, and Chrysler expects to get the world out to them all by the end of the week. Hopefully Greg, the winner of our Autoblog Celebration Sweepstakes featuring the All-New 2007 Dodge Nitro, didn't get one of the 80,894 being called back.

The most common question I've been asked this week is "Who won the Autoblog Relaunch Celebration Sweepstakes featuring the All-New 2007 Dodge Nitro R/T?" Whose garage is the Nitro parked in right now? Well, no one's yet.

One thing we've learned is that giving away a $30,000 vehicle is nothing like giving away a $400 iPod. We can't just draw a name from a hat and send the Nitro to the winner's house on a flatbed. As a matter of fact, Autoblog isn't drawing anyone's name. We hired a professional contest/sweepstakes company to handle all the back end stuff for the Sweeps, and they are responsible for the process of randomly picking and verifying the winner.

That process is complex and involves choosing the winners and a number of alternates. The potential winner must be contacted, verified as eligible, and made aware of what's involved in accepting the prize. If that person is eligible and agrees to accept the prize, that's when we'll be able to announce who won. If not, the process starts again with the first alternate drawn and so on. Obviously, this is a process that doesn't happen overnight. We are dying to know who won our Sweeps more than anyone, so we'll be sure to post who the winner is the minute we're told.

Again, thanks to everyone for entering. We've never done this before, but have been told by those helping us who have that it was a wild success.

We're a little miffed they couldn't wait until after our Sweepstakes to go all Benedict Arnold on their own products, but whatev.
