<br />Diesels and hybrids are currently fighting it out on sales floors across the world, with diesels taking claiming early victory in Europe, while hybrids hold their own in America. Volvo plans to combine the two fuel-saving technologies by 2012 in both the U.S. and across the pond. According to early reports, the system used by the Swedish automaker will be an advanced full-hybrid, with either the electric motors or an oil-burning engine capable of moving the vehicle independently. All-wheel drive will also be part of the package, as the front wheels would be powered by the diesel engine while the rears would be electrically motivated. Shortly thereafter, the automaker would release a plug-in version of its hybrid.<br /><br />Before any of this takes place, Volvo will take a few hybrid baby-steps in the form of stop/start technology on its smaller models before spreading across the line. In contrast, the diesel hybrids will begin at the top, equipped in larger sedans and SUVs. Considering that Volvo's been able to get up to 76 mpg from its non-hybrid diesel <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/09/paris-preview-volvo-ultra-efficient-diesel-drive-trio/">DRIVe models</a>, we will have high expectations for its diesel hybrids.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/">Volvo DRIVe C30, S40, V50</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/80_volvo_drive_press_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/81_volvo_drive_press_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/82_volvo_drive_press_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/83_volvo_drive_press_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-drive-c30-s40-v50/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/84_volvo_drive_press_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20081006/ANA03/810060359/1186/rss01&amp;rssfeed=rss01">Automotive News</a> - sub. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/06/volvo-vows-to-bring-hybrid-diesel-by-2012/">Volvo vows to bring hybrid diesel by 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 09:29:00 EST. The company <a href="http://www.just-auto.com/article.aspx?ID=95309">reportedly</a> has plans to introduce three new diesel powered vehicles by the fall. We are unclear on where Volvo intends to target with its little green <strike>men</strike> cars besides emerging markets such as China and Russia, but we'd love to see some more stylish and fuel efficient options in the U.S. It's too early to speculate on what vehicles Volvo is referring to, but that's never stopped us before. The C30 is currently the Swedish automakers smallest vehicle and at last year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FrankfurtMotorShow/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a>, Volvo showed off its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/20/frankfurt-preview-volvo-c30-efficiency/">C30 Efficiency concept</a>. We'd say that the timing certainly appears right for a production version of just such a machine. After all, who wouldn't appreciate the 52.26 miles per gallon from its 105 horsepower 1.6L turbodiesel engine? <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/">Volvo C30 Efficiency</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-c30-efficiency/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/07_frankfurt_c30efficiency-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.just-auto.com/article.aspx?ID=95309">Just-Auto</a> - sub. required]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/03/volvo-planning-more-small-models-more-diesels/">Volvo planning more small models, more diesels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 14:32:00 EST.
