You've soaked in the details. You've seen the pictures. You may even have set one as the wallpaper on your desktop or smartphone. But the new BMW M6 isn't the ultimate ogling machine. It's the ultimate driving machine. So the best we can advise is that you go out and drive one. But short of that, you'll want at least to see it in motion.

Fortunately, BMW has released a pair of clips showing the new coupe and cabrio doing what they do best in a setting that, to our eyes, looks like it must be in the Persian Gulf. Follow the jump to check them out, and try not to mind the soundtrack that's dubbed dramatic music over what we all really want to hear: the engine note.
Continue reading Check out the new BMW M6 duo in action

Check out the new BMW M6 duo in action originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 19:59:00 EST.
With 2012 now upon us, BMW has released a series of updates across its ever-expanding range, but the most noteworthy among them are a pair of special editions in the 1 Series.

First up is the Edition Exclusive, which packages a chrome grille, exhaust tips and window frames to contrast with the special grey metallic paint (or one of five standard colors), along with unique wheels and an interior decked out in special black or grey top-stitched leather with aluminum trim, anthracite headliner, chrome-trimmed steering wheel and handbrake and special sill plates and floor mats.

The Edition Sport, meanwhile, includes the M Sports suspension, wheels and aero kit, offset by high-gloss black exterior trim. The interior likewise benefits from some M touches, and grippy textile upholstery with contrasting blue stitching and aluminum trim.

Both packages are available on either the 1 Series Coupe or Convertible, and with a broad range of engines, with deliveries beginning in March. Follow the jump for the full press release and check out the high-res images in the gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading BMW adds Exclusive and Sport editions to 1 Series coupe/convertible range

BMW adds Exclusive and Sport editions to 1 Series coupe/convertible range originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 16:29:00 EST.
In true Honda fashion, we're once again presented with a "concept" car that's only a set of wheels and a de-Bedazzling away from being production-ready. What you're looking at here is the concept that previews the next-generation Accord that will be dropping later this year, ready to compete with a full slate of redesigned mid-size sedans.

Honda has once again taken a conservative approach to design, and while it's certainly handsome (except for those gaudy air intakes that flank both sides of the front fascia), we can't help but think that it already looks one or two generations old. (2009 Kia Optima, anyone?) We'll have to wait until we see the car in its production spec before making final judgments, but with sexy new mid-size offerings like the 2013 Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, the Accord doesn't look to be gunning for shoppers who want a whole lot of style with their substance.

Substance, though, it definitely has. The base engine is a new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder with direct injection, putting 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a continuously variable transmission. Honda will continue to offer a V6 in the Accord - a dying trend in this segment - measuring 3.5 liters, mated to either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.

The Accord Hybrid will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive."

What's really interesting, though, is that the 2013 model marks the return of the Accord Hybrid - a vehicle that died after the 2007 model year. This time, however, the Accord will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive" - with a 6-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 120-kilowatt electric motor mated to a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine. Honda says that the Accord Plug-In will have a pure electric range of 10-15 miles with a top speed of 62 miles per hour, and that recharging the battery will take less than four hours with a 120-volt charger, or less than 1.5 hours with a 240-volt setup. Not bad, Honda.

Naturally, Honda will pack the 2013 Accord with all of its latest safety technologies, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection and a multi-angle rear-view camera. We expect to see the production car debut in the not-too-distant future (New York Auto Show, perhaps?) with the 2013 model officially hitting dealerships this fall. The Accord Plug-In will arrive a little later, in winter.

We see the form versus function fight played out on a daily basis in the automotive realm. Designers, engineers and accountants lock horns on every model that ever makes its way to the street in order to come up with a suitable compromise that will successfully appease their respective masters. More often than not, a vehicle's more stylish aspects are left by the wayside as aerodynamics, packaging and economics hammer automotive forms into the same uninspired mold. Anyone who remembers the muscular form of the Chevrolet Volt concept need only look to the limp lines of the production model to see the process in action.

It's something special when an automaker cries "Damn the torpedoes!" and drives an undiluted concept design off of the auto show stage and straight into production. Pupils dilate, cheeks flush and hearts flutter with primordial do-want. Such is the case with the 2012 Range Rover Evoque Coupe. In an era when most automakers wouldn't waste firing a single synapse on the personal utility segment, Land Rover has kicked open the doors on an arena long thought forgotten. With its heart-stopping styling, powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine and surprising off-road chops, the Evoque is exactly what we've been missing from this segment. But who's going to buy it?
Continue reading 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 11:57:00 EST.
In just a few weeks, we'll be feasting our eyes on the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe under the bright lights of the Detroit Auto Show. And while the endless spy shots and leaked images have done a good job of showing us exactly what the new coupe looks like, this in-person video gives us a glimpse of what the new Hyundai sports cars looks like in the wild - inside and out.

We're slowly warming to the new Veloster-inspired front fascia, and the other visual changes for 2013 have been easier to appreciate. The revised taillamps look nice, and we dig the wheel design of the 3.8 R-Spec model shown in this video. V6-equipped Genesis Coupes will now be good for 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, routed to the ground via a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. Turbocharged four-cylinder models will still produce a more than respectable 271 hp and 275 lb-ft with the same transmission choices.

The videos, available after the jump, give us a glimpse inside the new Genesis Coupe, and though we can't see much more than the gauge cluster and steering wheel, it doesn't appear that too much has changed inside. More interesting is a brief second video clip with a first-person acceleration run, though in truth, it doesn't reveal much more than the engine sound because of the way it's shot.

The web has fired up an interesting bit of rumor concerning the next-generation Mazda6. British auto magazine WhatCar? reports that a shadowy senior official within the Japanese automaker has confirmed that a coupe version will bow after the current sedan's successor debuts in a little over a year.

The 2013 Mazda6 is set to hit the market in January 2013, and WhatCar? reports that the coupe version may not touch down until 2014 or later. That's a long, long way off, and there's no guarantee that, even if the model becomes a reality, it will be sold in the States. All of which means we're taking this one with a Mazda6-sized grain of salt.

Still, WhatCar? reports the coupe version of the Mazda6 will make use of the same SkyActiv tech found in the four-door, including a weight-saving design, small displacement engines with forced-induction and new transmissions. Still, we like the sound of an attractive two-door designed to give the Honda Accord Coupe and Nissan Altima two-door some competition, especially if it comes packing excellent fuel economy.
Mazda6 coupe coming? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 09:57:00 EST.
Toyota is an auto sales juggernaut, but when it comes to sports cars, the Japanese automaker tends to come up exceptionally short. That should change with the introduction of the Toyota GT 86 in Europe and Scion FR-S in North America, both of which promise rear-drive fun and a reasonable price tag. So far we've seen the 86 in person and we've snapped plenty of pics, but we haven't had the chance to hear the 2.0-liter boxer engine rev.

That changes all changes thanks to a three-minute video that is big on CGI and funky techno music. Hit the jump to watch the animated 86 in action. You'll see the boxer four assembled out of mid air, wrapped in 86 sheet metal and driven to the virtual limit. The video is very Forza meets Gran Turismo and the music a bit overpowering, but the sound of the new boxer engine makes it a must-watch.
Continue reading Toyota GT 86 lets new boxer engine rev in latest vid

Toyota GT 86 lets new boxer engine rev in latest vid originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 12:32:00 EST.
A new report says General Motors has decided against producing a coupe version of the forthcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. We don't know how far into the development process a two-door Malibu made it, but renderings of the car were shown to journalists last week. When queried, however, GM design chief Ed Welburn told Inside Line, "A Malibu coupe could be a pretty nice car, but it is not in the plan right now."

GM introduced the new Malibu at the 2011 New York Auto Show, and has said it intends the car to be a truly global product sold in 100 countries. Shorter and wider than the old model, the new Malibu's proportions would have certainly lent themselves to a two-door - and we'd be lying if we said it wouldn't warm our hearts to see a "Chevelle" badge on the decklid.

Alas, the coupe market isn't what it once was, and Chevy clearly has other plans for positioning the car. A 38-mile-per-gallon Eco model was also announced at the New York introduction, taking advantage of GM's eAssist mild hybrid system currently used in the Buick line to improve the Malibu's fuel economy by five mpg compared to the 2012 model.

All standard 2013 Malibu's will be powered by a new 190-horsepower, 2.5-liter, direct injection four-cylinder. This may have influenced the decision against a coupe, which would have demanded a sportier engine. Also likely playing into Chevy's thinking is an increasingly crowded brand lineup. With new nameplates like the Sonic and Spark joining the one-year-old Cruze and Volt, Chevy sales and marketing has quite a lot on its plate already.
Chevy won't build Malibu coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 13:30:00 EST.
Between Subaru and Toyota, the pair of BRZ/FT-86 rear-wheel-drive coupes are high in the running for the honorary Chevrolet Volt Award For Painfully Slow New Car Rollouts. We won't take you through the entire lifespan of this pair of Japanese sports cars, but we'll say this: we're sick of waiting in Pavlovian anticipation for their Tokyo Motor Show unveiling already.

Still, at least this latest set of spy photos gives us a better glimpse at some of the Subie's finer details, including the full shape of the taillamps and what appear to be LED running lights just above the fog lights. We could probably do without that rear spoiler, though we'll wait until all of the swirly paper has been removed before making any final design assessments.

Subaru will be bringing a concept version of the BRZ to the Los Angeles Auto Show before the final production car debuts in Japan. All we can say is, it's about time.
Subaru BRZ continues to tease originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 13:01:00 EST.
We're all anxiously waiting to see what Hyundai has up its sleeves for the updated Genesis Coupe, and it looks like we may have a better idea of what's coming down the line. Gencoupe.com forum member shcboyzone managed to lay hands on a few grainy photos of what's appears to be the 2013 Genesis Coupe. Is this the real deal? Hard telling. If it is, the sports car will rock styling that's very similar to what we've seen from the Hyundai Accent and Veloster. With a more upright fascia, hexagonal grille and sculpted lights, the similarities are unmistakable.

It looks like the vehicle will also feature unique hood louvers, though it's unclear from the photos whether or not the pieces are actually functional. Around back, Hyundai has graced the coupe with a set of LED tail lamps as well. While this design seems to dovetail fairly closely with the heavily camouflaged mules we've seen in testing, we won't know for sure whether or not this is the real deal until we get closer to the vehicle's unveil at the next Detroit Auto Show. The Mini Cooper Coupe - or "Couper," as associate editor Jeff Glucker has dubbed it - goes on sale in the fall, priced from a respectable $22,000. Stepping up to the Cooper S Coupe will set you back $25,300, and the top-rung John Cooper Works Coupe commands $31,900. But those are just the base MSRPs.

If you're in the market for a new Lexus, it'll have to come with four or five doors, unless you've got the $375,000 to shell out on the LFA or want to drop the entire roof with the IS Convertible. But that could all change with the arrival of the new GS line.

The new-for-2013 sedan - previewed by the LF-Gh concept in New York and recently spied undergoing testing at the Nürburgring - is expected to bow at Pebble Beach in just a few weeks. But while that vehicle, like the IS, ES and LS, is expected to be a proper four-door sedan, rumor has it that a coupe version could be in the works as well.

If it comes to fruition, the GS coupe could pick up where the smaller, discontinued SC left off and go up against the likes of the Audi A5, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and BMW 6 Series, but Inside Line advises it likely wouldn't arrive until the spring of 2013 at the earliest.

A convertible version could be in the cards as well, though Lexus would be just as likely to avoid stepping on the IS C's toes. Of course, this could all come to naught, or Lexus could opt to go an entirely different route for its next two-door model.
Lexus pondering GS coupe? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 11:31:00 EST.
If there's one thing the world needs, it's another BMW X6, right? Mercedes-Benz seems to think so - after all, this isn't the first time we've heard rumblings about a four-door coupe-crossover from the German automaker. Now, Automotive News reports that the new X6 rival will be built at Mercedes' Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant.

Makes sense to us. The swoopy new crossover - speculated to be dubbed 'GLS' - is understood to be based on the redesigned 2012 M-Class, which is also being built at the Tuscaloosa facility. Sources within Mercedes-Benz have told Automotive News that the new crossover will likely start production around 2015.

This announcement of the new M-Class variant's production plans is part of a larger $2 million investment in the Tuscaloosa facility. In addition to the new M-Class, Mercedes-Benz has said that the C-, R- and GL-Class vehicles will also be produced in Alabama.
Mercedes-Benz will build M-Class "coupe" in Alabama originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 11:01:00 EST.
Thus far, the Cruze has been a big success for Chevrolet. Although you could chalk up part of its meteoric rise to a lack of supply from Japan, the Cruze was the best-selling compact in America last month. To build on that success, General Motors is reportedly developing a two-door coupe Cruze for future production.

Although officials have yet to confirm the Cruze coupe, reports indicate that development is already well under way, with production earmarked for the Orion, Michigan, plant where the Sonic is being built. Why not the Lordstown, Ohio plant where the Cruze sedan is built? That facility is already running at full capacity - even into overtime - just to meet demand.

It would be interesting to see the Cruze spawn a coupe variant, particularly since two-door versions of the Cobalt and the Cavalier that preceded it, lamentable though they were, proved popular among teenagers as first cars. We particularly miss the Cobalt SS, which was available in both coupe and sedan bodystyles before the model was discontinued, as it offered one of the best performance to price ratios on the market.
Chevy developing two-door Cruze originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 08:59:00 EST.
The fourth-generation Nissan Altima continues to sell moderately well after five years of production, and Nissan is hoping that will hold true for 2012. This sixth year of existence will come with few changes, except for a slightly higher MSRP and one very affordable technology package.

Nissan says that the new Altima Sedan 2.5 CVT will now start at $20,410 plus destination, up $140 from 2011 numbers. The 2.5 S CVT is also up $140 with a base price of $22,570, while the top trim 3.5 SR CVT will now set you back $25,430, or $320 more than the 2011 model.

The Altima Coupe also received new pricing: $30,760 for the Altima Coupe 3.5 SR with a six-speed manual transmission. That's $210 more than 2011, and $2,330 more than the Altima Coupe 3.5 SR with CVT transmission. That's right, you'll be paying up for a stick-shift.

Just yesterday, Mini took the wraps off its all-new two-passenger Cooper Coupe, or "Couper," as we've been calling it (clever, eh?). We think the Mini Coupe adds a nice touch of diversity to the growing lineup, and if you strongly agree, perhaps you're ready to plunk down your cash for one, and the cost of entry is $22,000.

The 2012 Mini Cooper Coupe comes in three varieties; base Coupe, S Coupe and John Cooper Works Coupe. That $22,000 price tag is reserved for the base Coupe, while the mid-range S Coupe commands $25,300 and the JCW Coupe will set you back $31,900.

Mini has also announced pricing for the rest of the 2012 lineup, with nearly all models getting a $100 bump. The two exceptions are the $800 jumps for both the JCW Cooper hardtop and convertible. These models now come standard with an aero kit, hence the added cost. There are a few other equipment updates and color changes for the 2012 model year, which you can read about in the press release posted after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Mini Coupe priced from $22,000, other models get $100 bump

2012 Mini Coupe priced from $22,000, other models get $100 bump originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 11:29:00 EST. Mini has just released the first official details on the company's upcoming Coupe. In Europe, the two-seater will be available with a range of diesel and gasoline engines, spanning from a 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder good for 122 horsepower to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four pot with 211 ponies. In between, a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-pot with 143 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque is available, as is a more modestly turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder good for 184 hp. As you might expect, our cousins across the pond will be able to choose between four trims, including Cooper Coupe, Cooper S Coupe, John Cooper Works Coupe and Cooper SD Coupe.

Mini says that its creation should serve as a kick in the pants for the compact sports car segment, but we're guessing that the company is also hoping the Coupe will do the same for the automaker's sales. So far, there's no word on pricing or availability, but with hard details now out on the table, odds are it won't be long before buyers will be able to get their hands on a set of keys. Hit the jump for the full press blast.
Continue reading Mini Coupe prototype teased, full engine lineup revealed

Mini Coupe prototype teased, full engine lineup revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 10:24:00 EST.

Cadillac has apparently changed its plans for the next-generation CTS yet again, confirming the development of a coupe to fill out the rest of the line when it arrives in 2013. This comes after reports that Caddy's mid-level fighter would only be offered in sedan form.

Fighting it out for the hears and wallets of coupe and convertible buyers was originally going to be left to Cadillac's upcoming BMW 3 Series competitor, currently codenamed the ATS. The rationale was that a more traditional coupe roofline and folding convertible top would integrate into the ATS's rump more smoothly than the angular CTS.

For the next generation CTS, Motor Trend says Cadillac is changing the car's underpinnings from the current Sigma platform to the Alpha rear-drive platform, which will also see duty under the next Chevrolet Camaro.

Rumor has is that Cadillac is working on an even more radical design for the next-generation CTS Coupe, which will likely share its doors with the Camaro. And as we've heard so many times before, there may be a low-volume flagship model from Cadillac, nosing its way past the six-figure price point.

2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW has just given us an early preview of the 2012 6 Series Coupe in Munich ahead of its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show, and as you'd expect, the all-new hardtop 6er simply adds a fixed roof and a Hofmeister Kink to the cabrio we sampled earlier this year.

Head designer Karim Habib tells Autoblog that he drew most of his inspiration from BMW's iconic 3.0 CS produced in the late 60s and early 70s - particularly the elongated wheelbase, endless hood and upright, sharknose grille that just so happens to conform to the EU's pedestrian impact standards. The fascia benefits from full LED headlamps and triple-element foglamps (optional on both the coupe and cabrio), along with lower, wider kidney grilles that - when compared to the 7 Series' vertical slats - come off as less pinstripe-like and more aggressive; toothy, even.

Underneath that expansive hood lies BMW's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, producing 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque - identical to its drop-top sibling. An eight-speed automatic gearbox shuttles power to the rear wheels, allowing the coupe to hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds before topping out at the electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

According to BMW officials, the cabrio was introduced before the coupe because it makes up 60 percent of 6 Series volume in the U.S., the 6er's largest market. BMW hasn't released an official curb weight for the coupe, but it has confirmed that it will be lighter than its 4,500-pound convertible brethren. Sales are set to begin this Fall and should command slightly less than the cab's $90,000 point of entry.
The SCCA World Challenge series is some seriously exciting stuff that doesn't get nearly enough television exposure. With actual street cars duking it out on tight courses, it's door-to-door racing at its finest.

Catching the races live on TV can be impossible, particularly on basic cable. To stem that problem, World Challenge TV streams each race live on its website. Today's race starts at 4:20 PM EDT, and will be available for live viewing at WorldChallengeTV.com.

There's a 49-car field vying for the top spot, including two factory-backed Cadillac CTS-V Coupes.
