Way back in 1991, Matt Chambers started Confederate Motor Company, intending "to create machines utilizing a holistic, avant-garde process for celebrating the art of rebellion." Seven years ago, Confederate Motors scared the Hellcat out of the motorcycle-riding public. Five years ago, they wowed the biking world with a Terminator-like two-wheel contraption they dubbed the Wraith. Yesterday in Monterey, the company unleashed its latest challenger to the conventions of two-wheeled conveyance, the Confederate P120 Fighter.

The Fighter uses a massive 120-cubic-inch motor (1966cc) that provides 160 hp and 145 foot-pounds of torque. It's mounted in a lightweight aluminum frame, and promises nimble handling and a no-compromise riding experience. Should be a helluva performer, plus it looks like a 22nd century mount for an apocalyptic rider, which is probably worth as much as the performance to most would-be buyers. Many of the people who saw it unveiled at the Quail Lodge today couldn't believe it was actually a production vehicle. Most assumed it was some kind of Hollywood prop, but trust us when we say it's the real deal. Not sure what to get that motorcycle fan who has everything? How about something that's never been available before. Joining the first 31 BMW 7 Series models for 2009 in the Neiman Marcus Christmas book are 45 Limited-Edition Confederate Fighter motorcycles. The basic premise of the bike is similar in principle to the rest of the brand's wares, but the details really make this one stand out. Like the Wraith, the Confederate Fighter uses a girder-style front suspension made up of titanium, aluminum and carbon fiber bits and a 120ci 45-degree air-cooled V-Twin. From there, things diverge rather rapidly, with the Wraith's carbon fiber monocoque chassis being replaced with a backbone unit made from titanium connected to front and rear bulkheads cut from solid chunks of billet aluminum. Confederate claims a top speed of 190 miles per hour, but that may be just a tad optimistic considering that a prepped Wraith managed a land-speed record of just a tad over 166mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Still, this is one sweet bike that would be awesome to ride. Too bad about that $110,000 price tag. Thanks for the tip, John!

We don't cover motorcycles here at Autoblog very often, but this particular bike is so special that we couldn't resist. What bike are we speaking of? None other than the Confederate Wraith. You may remember the Wraith from a few years back, when it debuted as a prototype. What took so long to get this bike ready for production? Oh, just an "act of God", as the insurance companies like to call it; namely, Hurricane Katrina. The Confederate company was nearly destroyed, and without the assistance of one Mr. Barber of Barber Motorsports fame, the company would not be here today. Mr. George Barber was kind enough to offer his help in moving the Confederate operations from New Orleans to Birmingham, Alabama.

Reborn in a new shop, and with a new purpose, Confederate decided to unleash their Wraith upon the crowd at Daytona Bike Week '07. We would say "the unsuspecting crowd", but the group of dedicated travellers who make up the Bike Week audience have come to expect great things, and this year they received two.
