Monterey coverage continues unabated, with today's posts highlighting three different events: Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, La Dolce Vita, and Concorso Italiano. While Quail and La Dolce Vita have already been covered, here we're focusing on the Italians. Concorso Italiano has been one of Monterey's largest gatherings of Italian vehicles for many years, but last year's move to a municipal airport almost killed the event dead.

Previously held at the nearby Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey Bay, Concorso had to relocate due to some course reconstruction in 2008. This year the show went back to the links, but Laguna Seca Golf Ranch was the lucky host rather than Black Horse. Though the location was different, the show was much the same as we had come to expect from years past. Just like the past 20-something years, the event drew some stunning examples of Italy's finest.

Special gatherings honored the Ferrari 288 GTO, Alfa Romeo BAT cars, Ducati and Iso. There were also the usual huge clusters of De Tomaso, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati and "Honorary Italian" vehicles. Oh, and there were also a few Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Something on the order of 200 of each it seemed. Personal favorites included the Ferrari 512 race car, lime-green Dino, ultra-rare 288 GTO Evoluzione, white Scuderia, Lamborghini LMA, 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS, and the Gilda turbine car that will be auctioned at Gooding on Sunday. It was also great to see Tesla, Fisker and newcomer SV Motors represented. With just 272 produced, the 288 GTO is the rarest of Ferrari's modern supercars. And because it wasn't officially sold here in the United States, there's just a slim chance you'll ever spot one on the road. However, with 2009 being the 25th anniversary of the 288 GTO's introduction, there was talk of organizing a record gathering that would bring many of the cars together. Joe Sackey, Italian car expert and author of the upcoming The Book of the Ferrari 288 GTO, took the reigns of organizing an event in Monterey this weekend, including a display of the cars at Concorso Italiano. We counted fifteen 288 GTOs in total, including an ultra-rare Evoluzione model that was used by Ferrari to develop the F40. Automotive aficionado and all-around cool dude Jay Leno - today celebrating his last night has host of The Tonight Show - is set to receive the "La Bella Macchina" award this August at the 24th Annual Concorso Italiano. One of the highest honors in automotive circles, the award signifies outstanding contributions and a passion for the automotive industry. Previous recipients have included Sergio Pininfarina, Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby.

Concorso owner Tom McDowell summed up Mr. Leno well:
"Jay is the international face of the ultimate car guy and has been an enthusiastic ambassador for the hobby for more than 30 years. With his own large collection ranging from Lamborghinis and jet powered motorcycles to Duesenbergs and a tank-engined 30-foot hot rod, Jay's eclectic taste knows no boundaries, other than making sure it has four wheels and a great history.

The festivities continue around the Monterey Peninsula. We've already shown you pics from Gordon McCall's party and from the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance, but today's coverage picks up an Italian accent. The Concorso Italiano is one of the largest annual gatherings of all things Italian, be it music, cuisine, fashion, tourism, and of course cars. Previously held at the nearby Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey Bay, this year's gathering took place at the Marina municipal airstrip. Just like the past 20-something years, this year's Concorso brought out some stunning examples of Italy's finest, cars designed with passione and intended to be driven con brio. And just like in previous years, a few non-Italian cars that bring that same driving thrill were invited in for the party.

While the tarmac didn't offer the same soft picnic grove as the golf course, the organizers tried their best to make up for it with plenty of shady tents to visit filled with vendors, food and fun. Concorso has always been more laid back than some of the other judged events during the week, and even with the slightly more rigid airport setting there was still a feeling that you were at more of a car club meet than a genuine concours. The usual Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, and Alfas were joined by a bunch of Lancias, DeTomasos, Fiats, and a smattering of "others" that included German, Japanese, American, and British cars. Our favorite stop was the supercar lineup that featured two MC12s, two Veyrons, an Enzo and an F50. We even spotted Valentino Balboni, Adam Corolla and Jay Leno while we were there. Just when you thought we were done with our coverage of the classic and collector car events from Montery in the middle of August, here come the videos. We brought a camcorder along for the trip, and a friend or two offered to shoot some additional footage to share with all of you. We've finally uploaded and processed the clips and have them up on various hosts to share. To get things started, here's some video shot by our good friend Duane of SoCalSpeedZone.com. In it you'll see lots of Lambos displayed on, and then leaving, the Bayonet Black Horse GC at the end of the day. For fans of the Bull, this is total car pron. We're still sorting through our photos and videos from last week's automotive fiesta around the Monterey Peninsula. Today's post is from the Concorso Italiano -- one of the largest annual gatherings of all things Italian. As it is every year, Concorso is "A celebration of Italian style," covering Italian music, cuisine, fashion and tourism, as well as those exquisite cars we all love for their passion. Held at Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey Bay, it is a huge gathering of Italian cars and Italian car lovers.
