The Chicago Auto Show may be the smallest of the North American auto shows we cover (yet largest by square footage, ironically), but year after year, more and more automakers choose to show off some new metal under the lights of McCormick Place. This year saw a total of 18 major reveals (click here to see our full rundown), and while that pales in comparison to last month's Detroit show, there's still a lot of new metal to talk about here in Chicago.

1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R

Ford debuted the 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible earlier today at the Chicago Auto Show, but it wasn't the only Mustang vying for our attention on the show floor. In fact, we had a hard time keeping our eyes off this Vibrant Red beauty.

The pony car in question? A 1993 SVT Cobra R, the pinnacle of the Fox Body Mustang. The standard SVT Cobra made its official debut at the Chicago Auto Show back in 1992, and its reappearance in the Windy City was a fitting reminder of the 20th anniversary of Ford's Special Vehicle Team.

So what makes the 1993 SVT Cobra R so special? For starters, just 107 were produced, making it one of the rarest Mustangs ever built by Ford. The 235-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 is the same powerplant as the one in the standard Cobra, but the R model had less weight to push around thanks to the removal of the rear seats, radio, air conditioning and all sound deadening material. Ford also fitted the Cobra R with adjustable Koni shocks, larger front and rear brakes, 17-inch wheels shod with Goodyear tires, an external engine oil cooler and power steering fluid cooler, aluminum radiator and more.

The particular Cobra R brought to the show by Ford is literally a time capsule from the early '90s and in incredible condition. Amazingly, the odometer reads just over 4,100 miles. You can check out the car in detail in the gallery above.

In the world of Hot Wheels collecting, there are two types of people: those who open and those who don't. We tend to fall into the third, more populous category of those who demolition derby.

Clearly, we could never have demonstrated the kind of self-restraint it takes to purchase a brand-new 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R and leave it in its original factory wrapping. Fortunately, there are people out there like the seller of this particular machine. According to the eBay Motors listing, there are a mere 11 miles on the odometer, and the plastic you see on the hood and fenders is the same garb that the mean Mustang wore off the production line.

Even the front splitter and brake cooling ducts are in their original bubble wrap in the trunk, and the interior is swaddled in plenty of FoMoCo plastic. That means that this pony is as close to a factory-new Cobra R that you could possibly buy today.

Ford famously minted a mere 300 examples of the Cobra R in 2000. The cars were bare bones, street-legal racers, and while the 5.4-liter V8 under the hood was supposed to churn out 385 ponies, owners typically found the engine to return those numbers at the wheels, not the crank. When launched, Motor Trend found the car capable of 0-60 mph runs in the 4.4 second range and a skid pad effort of over 1.0 g.

So, what's it worth? Hard to say, but the auction has a Buy it Now price of $70,000, though the seller is also entertaining offers. Check out the auction here. Thanks for the tip, Brent!

We often point out the extremely odd vehicles that end up for sale on eBay Motors, but every once in a while a true gem pops up that's worthy of note just to ensure it winds up in the hands of the truly deserved. Such is the case with item #180182185046, a 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R. This particular example is #186 of only 300 made and has only 4,257 miles under its belt. For those who don't remember the Cobra R pedigree, it was the apex of SVT engineering at the turn of the millennium, powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.4L V8 producing 385 horsepower. Make no mistake, the 2000 Cobra R was a track special model with no radio, A/C, heating or even a back seat. While more powerful Mustangs have come and gone since the 2000 Cobra R, it is arguably one of the best handling 'Stangs ever thanks to the attention paid to weight reduction and its competition-oriented chassis tuning. The car is easily identifiable by its deep chin spoiler and large fixed rear wing, though the only time we've ever come across one is in a video game. The bidding for this mint Mustang ends on November 26th, but currently stands at only 11 bids with an offer of $35,100 leading the pack and the reserve not yet met.
