A lot has happened in the last 56 years... mankind landed on the moon, the Cold War ended and General Motors managed to build 100 million small-block V8 engines.

First launched in 1955 with 265 cubic inches of displacement, the small block V8 has seen duty in nearly every memorable machine produced by Chevrolet in the last five decades. In addition to being the bread-and-butter engine in GM's bread-and-butter brand, the small block has also been widely seen in the engine bays of various Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models in the States, as well as in Vauxhalls in the UK, Opels in the rest of Europe and Holdens in Australia.

While the current fourth-generation small-black V8 engine from GM doesn't share much at all in common with its forebears, it's still a tribute to a solid basic design architecture (4.4-inch bore centers, eight cylinders and overhead valves) that has remained a stalwart in power, affordability and efficiency.

The actual 100,000,000 engine will be a supercharged LS9 V8 that would normally be found in the engine bay of a Chevy Corvette ZR1, but this milestone powerplant will be kept and preserved by GM as part of its historical collection. Fittingly, the LS9, with 638 horsepower, is the most powerful engine ever offered by the automaker in a production vehicle.

In related news, GM has announced that its fifth-generation small block, due in the "near future" (perhaps the C7 Corvette?), will be blessed with a new direct-injection combustion system for enhanced efficiency. Naturally, it will still have 4.4-inch bore centers.

There's plenty of cool statistical information in the press release and video after the break, so we suggest you check it out for yourself... especially if you belong to the camp that believes pushrods automatically equal antiquated technology.
Continue reading GM marks 100-millionth small-block engine built [w/video]

GM marks 100-millionth small-block engine built [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 16:56:00 EST. Let's just say that certain Autobloggers appreciate the fact that there's a place on the web where one can easily acquire a mint-condition print advertisement for the 2-door 1970 Chrysler Imperial whenever the urge to do so strikes.

Sometimes, however, a longer perusal of the site uncovers finds that are so startling, one can only think, "Well, yes, you can get it... but should you?" Such is the case with the 1979 Fiat X/19 seen above. It began life as one of the attractive little Bertone-bodied 2-seaters. While we admit that many of the ones we see today (at least in this writer's Northeastern habitat) are in lamentably poor shape, we're pretty sure that we prefer stock examples, no matter how sad and rusted, to this.

Plenty more... follow the jump for the rest of it, including photos.

Thanks to Horst for the tip!

[Source: eBay]
Continue reading eBay Find of the Galaxy: 1979 Fiat X/19

eBay Find of the Galaxy: 1979 Fiat X/19 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 18:29:00 EST.
A week or so ago, we showed you the 1957 Bonaguro Special, apretty dream car realized through one man's vision and hands. Well, this week we bring you another such 'special'-- this one geared more towards racing than cruising. It also appears to need quite a bit more work, but the upsidelooks promising.

The owner says he has more than a dozen period trophies for this So-Cal special from the 1950's, along with variousrecords and vintage Car Craft and Hot Rod magazines in which it appeared.

Dubbed the 'Wright Special,' its bespoke aluminum bodywork clothes a Chevrolet V8 with LaSalle transmission andFord rear end, so our guess (and the documentation) point to a pretty serious performer for its era.

A full restoration is in order, after which vintage racing and perhaps a few shows will be in order. Takers? She'salready at $10,700 with more than 4 days left on the eBay ticker as this is written, so someone out there inauction-land evidently sees the potential in this unique one-off racer. If the winning bidder happens to see this, letus know when the Wright's right.
