The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has expanded its investigation into Chevrolet Cruze engine fires to two model years.

In April, NHTSA began investigating two complaints concerning fires erupting in 2011 Cruze engine compartments. Now, Reuters is reporting that the government agency has added 2012 Cruze models to the list, upping the number of total vehicles from 177,000 to 370,000.

General Motors told Reuters it has cooperated with investigators and there have been no reported injuries or accidents related to the probe.

According to a pair of complaints filed on NHTSA's website, two Cruze sedans were on the the open road when smoke began streaming out from under the hood. A few minutes later, the cars were ravaged by fire.

"In two minutes, the car was fully engulfed and flames were 15-feet high," one complaint said. "GM needs to find out and correct this problem before someone get [sic] seriously hurt."
NHTSA broadening Chevy Cruze fire probe to 370,000 sedans originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 18:01:00 EST. The government agency received two complaints about fires in Cruze sedans and eight in Wrangler models, with some reporting their vehicles were completely destroyed. In both Cruze cases, the compact sedans were being driven when the fires occurred. One Cruze Eco owner reported seeing smoke emanating from the engine bay, and the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames five minutes after coming to a stop.

In seven of the Wrangler cases, the engine was running when the fires started. One owner reported seeing burning liquid pouring onto the ground that couldn't be extinguished with water. In 2010, Chrysler recalled certain Wrangler models to address automatic transmission fluid that could overheat and expel onto hot surfaces, causing fires.

Both General Motors and Chrysler are cooperating with their respective NHTSA investigations and say they are unaware of any injuries or fatalities stemming from the fires.
NHTSA investigating Chevy Cruze, Jeep Wrangler over engine fires originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 13:30:00 EST.
In the fine tradition of the Celebrity Wagon, the Bow Tie brand brings you this: The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Wagon.

We kid, but in all honesty, the Cruze Wagon isn't just a more utilitarian take on one of our favorite C-segmenters - it's an attractive one to boot.

And speaking of boots, the Cruze wagon uses its extra inches to good effect, expanding the cargo capacity of the standard sedan and hatchback models to 17.6 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and blowing out to 52.9 inches with the rear thrones folded flat.

Chevrolet MyLink comes along for the ride, and in Europe, buyers get a choice of three gasoline engines and two diesels. But here in the U.S. we get nothing. Chevy has no plans to bring the Cruze Wagon to the States.
2012 Chevrolet Cruze Wagon blends style with utility originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 10:19:00 EST.
If you, like us, were wondering how MG managed to snag Jason Plato away from Chevrolet in the British Touring Car Championship, well you had good reason to wonder. The racecar driver and Fifth Gear co-host had, after all, driven the factory-backed team to both titles in 2010 and landed himself third and his team second just this past season. But you can wonder no more, as the latest news from the BTCC paddock is that Chevrolet has withdrawn from the popular saloon racing series.

The news arrives as a bit of a surprise coming from the front-running team, particularly at a time when the grid has expanded enormously in the past couple of seasons. The reason? According to Autosport, Chevrolet wants to focus its energies on the World Touring Car Championship, where the same outfit RML that ran the BTCC team fields similar Cruze touring cars - driven by Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alain Menu - with considerable success: The RML Chevrolet team has claimed both the drivers' and constructors' titles for the past two seasons running, making it something like the Red Bull Racing of touring cars.

A longtime competitor in the BTCC, RML reportedly hopes it won't be long before it is back on the grid in the British series, and given that most of the cars in the championship are fielded by privateer teams, we wouldn't be surprised to see them return as early as next year. In the meantime, General Motors will be well represented in the series by Vauxhall.
Chevrolet pulls out of British Touring Car Championship originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 08:01:00 EST.
If you think the Chevrolet Sonic sedan looks a bit abbreviated now, you should have seen it before General Motors stretched the vehicle. Take a good look at the spec sheets for the Sonic hatch and Sonic sedan, and you'll likely notice the four-door is over a foot longer than its twin. According to Automotive News, GM felt that early design attempts at the sedan bodystyle were too stubby looking. While the four-door was always intended to be somewhat longer than the hatch, designers rolled in additional space in the vehicle's rump to help situate the vehicle's proportions.

All told, the Sonic sedan is a whopping 14.1 inches longer than the Sonic hatchback, and nearly all of that length is in the trunk area. That gives the Sonic Sedan 14 cubic-feet of cargo area, just 1.4 cubes less than the significantly larger Chevrolet Cruze.
Chevy stretched Sonic sedan because it looked funny originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 16:30:00 EST.
Automotive News reports General Motors may begin manufacturing the Chevrolet Cruze in Europe. The vehicle would likely be produced at an Opel plant in Poland, while a handful of other Chevrolet models may see their production move elsewhere in Europe. The move is said to be the first step toward moving GM European operations toward profitability. The automaker would pull some production out of South Korea, which would then free up the company to proceed with cost-cutting measures at Opel. Automotive News reports Opel has lost approximately $13 billion since 1999.

Under the plan, Cruze production would find a home in Gliwice, Poland. Meanwhile, GM would spread the vehicles currently built at the facility across other Opel plants in the EU. Additionally, GM is considering moving the Orlando crossover to the Opel facility in Bochum, Germany. That plant currently builds the Zafira minivan, and has been rumored to face a closing in the future.

Last year, GM exported around 250,000 vehicles to Europe from South Korea.
GM to build Cruze and other Chevy models in Europe? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 17:29:00 EST. AutoForum managed to swipe what it says is a full, undisguised view of the vehicle's revised front fascia, where we can clearly see a more angular split grille with new horizontal slats. The current Cruze relies on a rounded opening. It isn't completely clear that this is a planned global facelift, or if it's just a market-specific look, but if it's the international mid-cycle refresh, the vehicle will also benefit from more expressive triangular fog light housings and stylized detailing along the lower fascia. We like what we see.

General Motors has already made it clear American buyers can look forward to getting their hands on both a diesel Chevrolet Cruze as well as a five-door version of the vehicle. Whether this fascia update will tag along on either of those models remains to be seen, however. The snapshot clearly shows a European license plate bezel, and the vehicle has been on sale in the old country for significantly longer than it has here in the States. Head over to AutoForum to see the full-scale shot side-by-side with our current model.
Chevrolet Cruze facelift spotted overseas originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 10:01:00 EST.
General Motors has suspended production of the Chevrolet Cruze. The automaker's Lordstown, Ohio facility suspended its third shift entirely and shortened its first and second shifts due to an unnamed supplier issue according to a spokesperson with the plant. Reuters reports GM has declined to elaborate on the nature of the kink in the company's supply chain, but stressed that the automaker hopes to clear up the issue as soon as possible. The Cruze has enjoyed major success this year, becoming the second-best selling vehicle in its class, second only to the Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla leads the Cruze by a scant 4,000 units, but the Cruze has managed to best both the Honda Civic and the Ford Focus without breaking a sweat. Previously, GM CEO Dan Akerson said he hopes the Cruze will become the best-selling vehicle in its segment by the end of 2011, but its unclear just how the new supplier crunch will impact those goals.
GM suspends production of Chevrolet Cruze due to supplier issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Those of us in the U.S. will have to wait until sometime in 2013 to see the diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze, but GM insiders seem more than willing to dish out some details on the oil-burning Cruze well in advance of its debut.

Ward's Auto reports that "sources" have confirmed the oil-burning Cruze will achieve a highway fuel economy rating "in the range of 50 miles per gallon." Additionally, unlike the manual transmission-equipped, 42-mpg rated Chevy Cruze Eco (an automatic Eco is available, but its mpg rating is well below that of the manual), the diesel Cruze, according to Charlie Klein, GM's director of global mass, energy and aerodynamics, will be a fuel-sipping sedan regardless of which trans is bolted to the engine.

As for that engine, GM has unofficially confirmed that it will indeed be based on the 2.0-liter diesel that's found under the hood of the Holden Cruze CDX. In the Holden, the 2.0-liter mill pumps out 160 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. One last bit of info: we hear that the diesel Cruze's torque will allow it to easily outrun the Cruze Eco.
Chevrolet targeting 50 mpg with diesel-powered Cruze originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 08:31:00 EST.
Let's take a stroll into a parallel universe for a spell; one where Michael Bay doesn't soak his Transformers films in vats of teenage testosterone for a fortnight. What would that realm look like? Chances are the mighty Bumblebee wouldn't be a pre-production Chevrolet Camaro. After all, here in real-life, the average teenager is stuck driving something a little more pedestrian, even if he is saddled with saving the world. We're thinking something along the lines of the Chevrolet Cruze. Apparently, China is where this alternate universe manifests itself, because General Motors has just released a Bumblebee Edition Cruze in the People's Republic.

The car comes with a suitably yellow paint scheme with black accent stripes, as well as an Autobot insignia on the fenders, wheel caps and spread around the interior. Speaking of the insides, illuminated Transformers sill plates are standard fare as well. The standard 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the only available powerplant.

For what it's worth, this isn't the world's first Bumblebee Cruze, though it is the first to use the proper yellow and black color scheme.
Japanese manufacturers are continuing to feel the sting of the March tsunami and earthquake disasters. Last month, the Toyota Camry was the only vehicle from a Japanese automaker to make the list of top ten best-selling cars and trucks. The four-door typically holds onto the top slot among passenger cars, but June saw the Chevrolet Cruze take that honor. The Camry fell to the fourth-best-selling car and eighth most popular model overall. General Motors managed to move 24,896 Cruze models off of dealer lots compared to 21,375 Camry vehicles.

Not surprisingly, the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado continued to be the most popular vehicles in the land of the free. GM walked away with the second, third and fourth top-spots with the Silverado, Cruze and Malibu.

Toyota says that Camry production is ramping back up to pre-disaster levels, so it won't be long before the Japanese sedan gives the new Chevrolet compact a run for its money. Head over to USA Today for a full breakdown on the top-10 best-selling models in America last month.
Cruze knocks Camry out of best-selling car spot for June originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 13:01:00 EST.
We already told you that the six-speed automatic-transmission-equipped Chevrolet Cruze is getting a two-mile-per-gallon fuel economy bump in 2012. General Motors has made the news official, and the automaker has also revealed a few upgrades for the upcoming model year.

On the 2011 Cruze, a $525 Connectivity Plus Cruise package was available. The kit featured Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, steering wheel-mounted controls for the audio, cruise control and leather on the tiller and shift knob. That equipment will now come standard on the 2012 Cruze 1LT and Eco.

In addition to the upgraded kit for the 1LT and Eco, all trims of the 2012 Cruze will get remote keyless entry. Other highlights: Keyless start has been added to the 2LT and LTZ; a seven-inch touchscreen display on the Eco, 2LT and LTZ; and fog lamps on the LTZ trim. Click past the jump to read the full press release to learn more about the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.
Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Cruze gets fuel economy bump, more standard equipment

2012 Chevrolet Cruze gets fuel economy bump, more standard equipment originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 08:28:00 EST. Chevrolet has reportedly issued a recall of 2,100 of its Cruze compact car in the U.S. and 400 units in Canada after one car was found to have an improperly attached steering wheel. While the defect sounds terrifying, Chevrolet says the mishap hasn't caused an accident or any injuries.

According to The Detroit News, Chevy is confident that only one car had the issue, and the recall is a precautionary measure. According to the story, Chevy says it inspected more than 2,000 vehicles at the plant where the defective Cruze was built and several hundred more at dealerships and didn't find any with a similar fault.

Those affected by the recall will be asked to take their Cruze in to the dealership to be inspected for the fault, which will be repaired for free if a problem is found.
Both Chevrolet and Ford have something to brag about at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada named the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze the Canadian Car of the Year; the 2011 Ford Edge took Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year honors. According to General Motors, AJAC members cited the compact sedan's efficiency, refinement, and price as the key factors, and that added bonuses like 10 standard air bags helped seal the award for the Cruze.

The 2011 Ford Edge crossover, won over journos with its extensive redesign and came out ahead following both road and track tests. Additionally, the Edge's onboard technology features helped drive home the win. Hit the jump for both press releases.
There's always a little skepticism attached to Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates. Even though the agency adjusted its testing procedures in 2008 to help generate more realistic figures, buyers and experts seem to approach the mystical city/highway numbers with the general impression that figures have little bearing on what owners actually experience in day-to-day use. So it should be no surprise that when General Motors and the EPA announced that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco would hit 42 miles per gallon on the highway, a stink of disbelief filled our newsroom.

That kind of lofty highway fuel economy is typically relegated to hybrids, clean diesels and subcompacts that require an uncanny mastership of human origami to ferry four friends along - not roomy four-door compact sedans. Fortunately, GM was kind enough to turn us loose on a long stretch of Southern California interstate to put the fuel economy of the Cruze Eco to the test.

Most cars never look quite as cool as their conceptual and pre-production versions, and it would appear that the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be no exception. Carscoop was able to get its hands on design drawings of the car used for trademark filings with the European patent office.

The good news is that the Cruze hatchback manages to stay fairly faithful to the version shown off at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The predictable bad news is that the front fascia looks less aggressive and ditches the LED light strips for standard fog lamps. What's more, the wheels will be smaller than the oversized auto show setup seen in Paris, and the rear taillamps will most likely be toned down a notch. The design and the show car are actually very similar looking. However, you can't have the sweet without the sour, so the really bad news is that the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback has not been greenlit for U.S. roads.

An affordable car should get an ad campaign to match. Following that logic, Chevrolet's Middle Eastern advertising team put together a spot to highlight the low price of the all-new Cruze. Rather than slapping some highly-stylized photography work or clean studio images onto the side of a billboard, Chevy had an artist set to work on the blank canvas with a blue marker. For over eight hours.

General Motors has released official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, and the automaker's original target of 40 miles per gallon (highway) has been surpassed. The Cruze Eco is officially rated at 28/42 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission, making it the segment-leader in terms of efficiency.

To achieve this, the Eco uses GM's latest 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, rated at 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. On its own, the engine is efficient enough to deliver 24/36 mpg, but a host of aerodynamic changes and weight reductions on the Eco account for the extra bump in fuel economy. In addition to a lower front air dam extension, rear spoiler, lowered ride height and revised underbody panels, the Cruze Eco rides on lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-rolling-resistance tires. What's more, a front grille shutter has been developed to improve airflow at higher speeds, thus accounting for a 10 percent coefficient of drag over standard Cruze models.

The Cruze Eco is priced from $18,895 and hits dealerships in January of next year. For the full details, hit the jump for GM's press blast.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is a nimble, compact sedan that could potentially turn into a top seller for General Motors. Apparently, it's also a fan of classic video games. Well, at least the Chinese ad agency that dreamed up this interesting ad for it certainly is. A large room serves as the stage for a full-size representation of the Pac-Man universe. A white Chevy Cruze plays the part of Mr. Pac-Man while a series of Black Cruzes represent the ghosts.

The video is well made but could use a little more substance beyond the driving and background music. However, the song will be with you all day. A bit of a warning though, the song has a few swears in it, which is funny because either the ad agency didn't notice them or just doesn't care. Also, the ghosts should be multi-colored, and it would have been really hilarious if they were old Cavaliers.

Check out the commercial after the jump. If you end up enjoying the music, the name of the band is The League and the song is called "F* RNR".
