While GM didn't bring a production Chevrolet Camaro convertible to SEMA, it did bring a handful of Camaro Coupe Concepts that offer a preview of things to come for the recently resurrected pony car. Besides the twin-turbo V6 Jay Leno Camaro we profiled earlier, we got to see Snergy, Chroma, Dusk and Graphics.

Those are the names given to the show cars, each highlighting a different element that should make it to production Camaros in the near future. There's a full presser after the jump and some galleries below, but basically, each has a different set of genuine GM accessories bolted on.

Synergy shows off a new limited-production exterior color (and we thought "Chroma" would be the color car) that has us thinking of a bottle of Scope and a slew of currently available boy-racer accessories.

Chroma kicks the SS Camaro up a notch with genuine Bowtie accessories like a body kit and graphics pack, plus some future products like 21-inch wheels, rear Blade spoiler and new grille. The whiteout monochrome paint scheme makes it look race-ready, just waiting for someone to slap on NASCAR decals.

The Dusk (above) is the car that departs most from the typical Camaro mold. Chevy describes it as being "Inspired by the style of young, urban professionals... It is a very tailored look that is stylish and sophisticated, but with a distinct American accent." The Dusk shows a number of possible future options and features, like BBS wheels, a unique ground effects package, new bezels for the lamps front and rear, Brembo brakes and a tech package that includes a Boston Acoustics sound system, WiFi connectivity and an iPhone dock. Done up in a dark Berlin Blue, it makes the Camaro look sophisticated and, dare we say, almost European.

The Graphics Camaro is actually a series of four looks for the Camaro that will rotate through the GM booth each of the show days. After displaying each on a Silver Ice Metallic Camaro, attendees can vote for their favorite look, with the winner possibly going into production. You can vote for your favorite on the Camaro's Facebook page.

There are seemingly thousands of other custom Camaros here at SEMA 2009, but this handful shows where Chevy envisions the Camaro heading in the future.

Click the image above for a high-res gallery of 2008 SEMA Camaro concepts

You read about them earlier, but GM pulled out every joker it had in the Camaro deck today. One of them was bathed in yellow and filled with a host of GM Accessories options, like contrasting side sills and front spoiler, the hockey stick stripe package, and 21-inch wheels in machined aluminum with black accents. One thing we realized when getting up close and personal is that the inside of the Camaro is as dark as a coffin. It might not be a bad idea to splurge for the interior lighting package if you want to see who's in the car with you.

The Dale Jr. Camaro is something old and something new, with a biofuel V8 that's been tweaked for a little more horsepower, and the monster is shifted with a Hurst short-throw. Outside, gray-over-white goes will all sorts of stripes and emblems, whereas inside the car is black with orange stitching and gets a nice set of white center console gauges. And that ducktail dovetail spoiler? Straight out of '69. The car should come with an 8-track of Bryan Adams' Greatest Hits, which probably wouldn't sound too bad on the Boston Acoustics system.

The Camaro Black Concept is the car this blogger equated to pure badass one year ago, after driving the Camaro Convertible Concept. The blacked-out gloss exterior offset by a matte hood go perfectly with the red halo rings around the headlights. Frankly, we'd lower it even more over the 21-inch wheels, but we wouldn't touch the black interior with red interior lighting. We didn't expect GM to put the 6-cylinder in it, but based on the sound it made rolling by, it's not a problem. The Camaro got its first star turn in Transformers, and if Hollywood ever decides to remake The Car, this one is the star. Until then, you can check out the gallery of high-res photos below.

Gallery: SEMA 2008: Camaro Concepts LIVE

Photos copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading SEMA 2008: Camaro Accessories, Camaro Black, and Earnhardt, Jr. Camaro LIVE

SEMA 2008: Camaro Accessories, Camaro Black, and Earnhardt, Jr. Camaro LIVE originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 20:32:00 EST. Quite a few of you guessed it was some sort of Corvette concept, or the C7 Corvette due in 2010. For those of you who guessed Corvette concept, you were right. The picture above is that concept, and according to speculation it is getting some paint work done in the house of Chip Foose. We don't know if these pics were taken before or after the car's closeup, but we hope it was afterward and that GM is getting ready to actually show us the car. Jalopnik's also got pics of Bumblebee getting paint work done in the same shop. It's a much yellower Bumblebee than the orange one seen on the TF2 set, and word is it could be a Z/28... or it could be a package you'd order from... Saleen? Click the link for the photos and gossip.

[Source: Jalopnik]
Transformers: Corvette concept, Bumblebee Z28 in the buff originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 Jun 2008 12:02:00 EST. It wasn't found on the set of Transformers2, but on location for a Christian Slater television show that'll debut this Fall on NBC. It's a very tastefully done brawn job. The SS badge takes its place in the lower right corner of the grille, with another small badge on the rear bumper. The front spoiler that a number of commenters took issue with on the Bumblebee mod looks to be, if anything, an aftermarket piece. But there's still a nice lip at the bottom -- though we did like the black version -- and another body-colored spoiler out back. There is also an LED-looking third brake light, which we hope makes it to production.
Unlike a number of other drugs, the great thing about 2010 Camaro sightings is that you cannot OD on them. With that in mind, we bring you a lengthy Camaro video, this time of a black car being trailed by an "official" camera car. The great thing about this video is that it comes with its own theme music, and the great thing about that is that you know you're going to hear this song coming out of a lot of Camaros when they hit the streets next year. Maybe they'll even offer loudspeakers in the grill as an option so you can blast it on the way to Dairy Queen. We like the song and the car, and as we said when we reviewed the Camaro Convertible concept: we'll take it in black with black wheels, please. To see the feast for eyes and ears, follow the jump for the video.

Blasphemy you say? Could be, but what four-pot are we talking about? In this case, the General's car czar Bob Lutz suggests that the new 2010 Camaro due next February could offer the same 2.0 liter direct-injected engine used in the Saturn Sky Redline, Pontiac Solstice GXP and the SS versions of the Chevy HHR and Cobalt. Before dismissing the turbo-four immediately, consider the top-of-the-line engine options the Camaro offered after the last oil-embargo-driven doomsday. In '72, the big block 402 engine offered just 240 horsepower; in '73, the Z28 was equipped with a 245-horse 350 and by '75 the hottest option underhood made only 155 horses. Ouch. The 2.0 being considered for the Camaro punches out 260 horsepower, and based on our time with the engine, you feel each of them as you run up towards the redline. The next step-up will likely be a version of GM's 3.6, as offered in the CTS and G8, also making around 260 horsepower.

Other Camaro tidbits mentioned by Lutz: it will be priced higher than the Mustang, as GM sees the Camaro as a higher-end offering. Specifically, Lutz suggests that the Camaro will feature a much better interior than the 'Stang, along with its inherently better independent rear-suspension arrangement.

Perhaps a bigger question to ponder is how bad will the performance industry be impacted by new fuel efficiency standards along with the ever-tightening emissions regulations. Just so long as carmakers such as GM continue to offer engine options like their 2.0 liter DI four-banger, the performance drop-off won't be nearly as drastic as it was back in the mid-70s. Thank God for that!

Gallery: Chevy Camaro Concept

[Source: Automotive News, sub. req'd]
Lutz says GM considering 2.0-liter turbo for Camaro originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 18:04:00 EST. A stunning yellow Camaro also had the starring role on the biggest Hollywood blockbuster of 2007. We're even getting "spy shots" of the production Camaro taken by General Motors engineers that are posted on the GM Fast Lane blog. What we won't see any time soon is a production Camaro being unveiled during 2008. Kicking Tires quotes Chevy execs as saying that the company wants to avoid overexposure when production is still a year away. The General also wants to get the concept car to less prominent show sites like Houston and Cleveland, and there aren't many hand-made models to spread out across the country.

Since this is the third year in a row that at least one Camaro concept has been shown at the Detroit show, the crowd gathering around the Mustang fighter has gotten decidedly smaller. We're thinking the reason for that is because the public is now ready for the production model, but since a salable model is still a year away, the General is smart to hold off until the iconic pony car is closer to dealer lots. Besides, if we get a new picture from GM every week or two, it'll more than curb our cravings for bow-tie pony power for the time being.

Gallery: 2009 Chevy Camaro - front

Gallery: Pre Production Camaro High Res

[Source: Kicking Tires]
2009 Chevy Camaro a no-show at auto shows originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 07:55:00 EST.
Since the original Camaro concept hit NAIAS in January 2006, it seems like we've been living with (and writing about) the pony coupe forever. The fact is, we still haven't seen the Camaro's final production duds. Until now, kind of. The Camaro5 website has posted on its forums a near-naked Chevy Pony car in production sheet metal. The front and rear are wearing padded underwear, but we can see from the side-view pic that the basic shape stays true to the stunning concepts of 2006 and 2007.

Missing are the three slotted vents ahead of the rear wheel wells, but it looks like some ribbed metal takes its place. Also history are the funky-cool but slightly impractical side mirrors from the concept cars, and unlike the concept, the production model has a B-pillar. While it's difficult to tell for certain with the flat white paint job and slightly blurry photography, it appears as though some of the hard edges of the concept's belt-line have been softened. Judging by the high-polish 18- or 19-inch rims on this pre-production model, it's as close to final as we're going to see before the RWD coupe starts rolling off the assembly line. Without seeing the front and back of the Camaro, it's tough to gauge how closely GM stuck to the design of the concept, but from this one picture, it looks pretty close.

To no one's surprise, it is the post in which we introduced to you the Chevrolet Camaro Concept for the first time. Titled simply "Debut of the Chevrolet Camaro Concept", this post was published originally on January 9th, 2006 during the 2006 North American International Auto Show. Since then, it has been viewed on Autoblog 364,456 times, more than any other post.

Obviously the Camaro Concept was a big hit with the public, but at the time it debuted we didn't have the ability to offer you a high-resolution gallery of official shots. Now we do, so we've assembled all the hottest Camaro Concept shots we could find in all their 1,280 pixel-wide glory. Check out the gallery here, and feel free to download the pics for your own personal use.

Autoblog's #1 Most-Read Post of 2006 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Jan 2007 14:06:00 EST. Usually a single automaker is honored as manufacturer of the show and enjoys a little extra exposure during the week. With this theme, however, all three Detroit auto companies are celebrated. Muscle cars, their impact on American culture and the current resurgence of American iron dominated the discussion at the keynote luncheon on Monday. With a current Mustang and the Camaro and Challenger concept vehicles parked just off the dais, a panel of six industry experts talked about the renaissance of high-powered vehicles and the legacy of speed that was born in the '60s. Motor Trend editor Angus MacKenzie (far left in photo) was the moderator. Included on the panel were (left to right):

Pat Schievoni, Ford designer

Dan Webb, designer and car builder

Ralph Gilles, vice-president Jeep/Truck & Component Design, DaimlerChrysler

Tom Hoover, "godfather" of the Hemi

Thomas Peters, director of design, GM

Al Oppenheiser, GM designer

Favorite muscle cars of the panel included Shelby GT 500, 428 Cobra Jet Mustang, Z/28 Camaro and Hemi Cuda. They laughed at the competitive atmosphere of the '60s and the vicious horsepower wars. Then came the oil embargo, insurance crisis and concerns over pollution. "The environmental issues were inverse proportion to horsepower," said Oppenheiser, who designed the Camaro concept. "Today there is a balance between horsepower and emissions."

The '80s generated laughter as Gilles said motorsports was the "one thing that didn't go away" and MacKenzie noted that trucks were the only vehicles igniting any passion. "We listed to bad music and wore bad clothes," added Webb, trying to explain the onslaught of boring vehicles in that era.

Hoover said technology spurred the muscle car resurgence and will spawn a new generation of enthusiasts. Schievoni agreed and sees "real growth" in muscle cars for the next 15 years. Added Gilles: "Technology like stability control allows anyone to drive a 400-horsepower car."

In closing, Hoover suggested that designers "keep the door cracked just a little bit for a sleeper approach," acknowledging his preference for fast motors in unsuspecting bodies. To which MacKenzie responded: "More engine, less car; it's the '60s all over again!"
SEMA panel celebrates muscle cars, then and now originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 19:59:00 EST. It's a perfect view to analyze the Autobot's form and pick out pieces parts from the Chevrolet Camaro concept. The most obvious is Bumblebee's chest plate, which appears to made out of the corners of the Camaro concept's front bumper. Though many have panned the decision to base Bumblebee on the Camaro concept rather than the original Volkswagen Bug, at least he seems to retain that affable charm when bipedal that made him such a likeable 25-foot tall robot.

[Source: TFW2005]

Related posts:
His lament after finding out that he wouldn't be able to enjoy this paragon of luxury was to point out that he had never even sat in the vehicle, let alone get behind the wheel and drive. Our hearts go out to him and you'll understand why soon enough.

This, however, was not the case for GM's Tom Peters, lead designer for the Camaro. He got the opportunity to drive the concept for the first time and someone was smart enough to bring along the video camera.

The video provides some interesting points about the development of the concept and what kind of enthusiasm was put into the project.

Enjoy and don't forget to bid.
Lead designer of the Camaro goes for a spin originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 12 Aug 2006 14:03:00 EST. While Lutz only mentions the comments left on FastLane Blog, we can add that the support for the Camaro on Autoblog has been robust to say the least. After posting on the Camaro Concept's introduction at the North American International Auto Show in January, you all left 1,074 comments on the post. And despite losing to the Dodge Challenger in our Pony Poll by a narrow margin, the Camaro has remained an object of pure automotive lust on Autoblog ever since.

In his post Lutz talks about the Aussie origin of the upcoming Camaro's chassis and the need for the car to appeal to all age groups and people outside the U.S., an obvious hint that the Camaro's going global.

You can check more photos of GM's announcement yesterday at the company's Flickr gallery here.

So mad props go out to Lutz and company for recognizing the power of the blog. Yes, behold the power of the blog! For our next trick, we'll resurrect the Firebird. Who's with us?

[Source: GM FastLane Blog]
Lutz thanks blogosphere for Camaro support originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Aug 2006 16:04:00 EST. A fully brain-functional Wagoner posed with a red version of the concept car for the obligatory photo-op (above).

Production of the Camaro will begin in late 2008, and the much-anticipated car will hit showrooms in early 2009, presumably after a massive debut at the '09 Detroit Auto Show.

Not much new, but here are the highlights:

RWD with independent rear suspension

V6 and V8 versions, manual and automatic transmissions

styling will closely resemble the concept car

asked about a droptop Camaro, Wagoner would only say, "It will come in many shapes and sizes."

no comment on a possible Pontiac Firebird version

The new series will follow eight interns as they each take a vehicle - based on GM's hydrogen fuel cell technology - from the drawing board through the design process. The series promises a "rare look" at several aspects of automotive industry and product development process, such as the sprawling engineering centers and proving grounds where cars are born and put to the test.

Given the number of vehicles being followed and the relatively short length of the series, we're a bit concerned that several aspects of the development process will be glossed-over; however, considering that it's currently easier to find documentaries on the making of Little Debbie swiss-cake rolls than it is to find anything on the passenger car design process, we'll take what we can get.

Umm ... now we all know the Camaro Concept (and the Dodge Challenger Concept, as well) will likely go into production, but last we heard the business case was "still being fleshed out." Reportedly 100,000 Camaros will need to be sold in order for Chevy to start profiting from the Camaro's return. A convertible model would no doubt help the cause, so we're not surprised it's on the table. Indeed, debuting a Camaro Convertible Concept in the intervening years before the actual coupe goes on sale will keep the car's buzz at a fevered pitch until production starts sometime in 2008 or 2009.

Check out another sketch after the jump, both of which are courtesy of John McBride as seen in Popular Hotrodding.

[Source: Post-Gazette.com]
Continue reading Camaro convertible already approved?

Camaro convertible already approved? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 08:02:00 EST. A bright orange Chevy Camaro Concept that's more than meets the eye will play the good-natured Transformer named Bumblebee, which has traditionally been portrayed by the Volkswagen Beetle. Vines, who is on the product strategy team for the Challenger, says a business case is being produced "fast" and a decision should be reached by the end of the year. We already know Chevy needs to produce 100,000 Camaros annually for its pony car to turn a profit, so it would stand to reason Dodge is considering how it's going to move that many Challengers. Currently the Mustang is capable of 160,000 sales per year, so the big question is whether or not the market can sustain the sale of 300,000-plus muscle cars per year.

[Source: Inside Line]
Dodge insists Challenger does not yet have green light originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 May 2006 10:28:00 EST.
