Although these turbocharged beasts are what make the heart swoon, the bulk of World Engines engines are much more mundane. With fuel efficiency a top priority these days, the Diamond Star brand will soon be investing some nine-billion yen (US$84.2m) into its engine plant in Japan's Shiga Prefecture, which makes the global four-bangers in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 liter capacities. Expect to find these engines underhood in various Lancer and Outlander models.

[Source: Just-Auto - sub. req'd]
Mitsubishi raising output of World Engine by 35% originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 08:31:00 EST. Did you buy one? If you answered yes, there's no need to read this post. You'll either go crazy wondering why anyone in their right mind would want 280 hp in such a sweet, useful crossover, or you'll become suicidally jealous of what you could have bought if you'd only waited a few months.

The SRT4 is a monster. We mean that in a rabid Cookie Monster kinda way -- not that cute little potty-mouthed Binky seen in early Caliber commercials. This car is mean. It does away with an inch of suspension travel, with stiffer springs, dampers and stabilizer bars front and rear and gets dropped onto 19-inch, low-profile 225/45 Goodyears for a ride that is anything but cuddly.

We got to play around with an Inferno Red SRT4 for a few miles of twisty, southwest Georgian roads recently and can't think of a better color. Unless it's the Sunburst Orange. Either hellishly-vibrant hue with contrasting black air intakes in the hood and rear wing advertises to anyone with working corneas that this is not a normal car. Special front and rear fascias and a 3-inch exhaust outlet complete the bad-boy look.

Continued after the jump.

Gallery: First drive: 2008 Dodge Caliber SRT-4

All photos Copyright (C)2007 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.

Continue reading First drive: Dodge Caliber SRT4

First drive: Dodge Caliber SRT4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 12:01:00 EST. Forum member Ironside happened upon a 2008 model guide while visiting a local Dodge dealer and when he flipped through the book, he spotted the SRT specs and pics. He even photocopied the pages and posted them for proof. Many forum members seem to be let down, as the promised 300 hp is apparently not gonna happen. Here are the posted specs and a few comments:

2.4L DOHC 16V Dual VVT 4-cylinder intercooled/turbocharged World Engine with 280hp @ 6000-6400rpm, 260 lb-ft torque @ 200-5600rpm.

0-60mph = 6.2 seconds

1/4 mile = 14.6 seconds

Top speed = 157mph

The SRT-4 will have a choice of two different 19" 5-spoke rims, the painted ones like on current SRT's, and the chrome ones.

Final colours that are offered are brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red (So no new colours like we'd hoped for the SRT).

The front driver seat FOLDS FLAT.

NO MyGIG.

***NEW INTERIOR*** Offered in what they call a "new completely dark slate grey" (huge improvement from the sound of it).

Jalopnik found pics of one sitting on a city street for all the world to see. Looks a lot like the photos we've seen already, but seeing one in the wild brings the reality of imminent production to a point. Chunky and mean, we can't forget that this little wagon is packing 300 hp. When we talked about the chats with the SRT team on CaliberForums.com, we were reminded that this Dodge will be a normal 2008 model year car, which means it will arrive "as the leaves change colors," according to one engineer. Unfortunately, the on-sale date can't be pinned down to a specific day this far out, so we'll have to be satisfied with an autumnal arrival. We're very eager for someone to get their hands on an SRT-4 to see how Dodge handles the torque steer issues that come with routing 300 horsepower through the front wheels. Click over to Jalopnik for several more photos in larger sizes.

[Source: Jalopnik]
Spy Shots: Dodge Caliber SRT-4 in the wild originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 09:01:00 EST. Currently, the team has the Caliber SRT-4 on its plate, and the focus of the most recent chat session centered around the car's impending arrival. The SRT team revealed that Dodge's 300-horsepower "economy" car will be a normal 2008 model year car, which means it will arrive "as the leaves change colors", according to one engineer. While the supercars of the world are currently battling it out between 600 and 1,000 horsepower, economy cars are waging war between 200 and 300 horsepower. While we have no information on how much power the next generation Nissan Sentra SE-R will produce, we'll tell Nissan straight up it's going to need at least 225-250 ponies to compete. These spy shots show the Sentra in SE-R trim with the obligatory revised front and rear fascias plus side sills. Larger wheels and some massive rotors are also part of the package. The power bar has been raised by the 250-hp MazdaSpeed3 and 300-hp Dodge Caliber SRT-4.
