<div align="left">Designed with an eye toward post-apocalyptic living, Paul Elkins whipped up this trailer to pull behind his bicycle at the Burning Man festival. It's 100 pounds of home away from home, built from aluminum tubing reclaimed from a satellite dish and skinned with the same type of plastic commonly used for political campaign signs. A card table and some wheelbarrow parts are also in the mix, following the idea of using what's on hand after a disaster.</div>
</div>
<br /> While Elkins designed another version of this idea that's more suitable for road use, this rig looks pretty comfortable and well equipped. It harnesses the energy of the sun to charge batteries and dehydrate food - you'll be able to read a book at night while enjoying your own beef jerky recipe. Hot water for a shower is also provided courtesy of the sun. It's all pretty cozy, and it's way cheaper than an Airstream. Checking out Elkins' blog reveals plenty of ingenious projects that might give you something to do during the coming winter months. <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/">Homemade Bike Trailer</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/reclined-bed_thumbnail.jpg" alt="reclined-bed" title="reclined-bed" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/026_0a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="026_0a" title="026_0a" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/100_1975-1252034708_thumbnail.jpg" alt="100_1975-1252034708" title="100_1975-1252034708" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/100_1978-1252034709_thumbnail.jpg" alt="100_1978-1252034709" title="100_1978-1252034709" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/homemade-bike-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/100_2404-1252034712_thumbnail.jpg" alt="100_2404-1252034712" title="100_2404-1252034712" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://highmileagetrikes.blogspot.com/index.html#5510366049285942968">High Mileage Trikes</a> via <a href="http://www.neatorama.com/2009/08/26/an-eco-friendly-bicycle-hauled-travel-trailer/">Neatorama</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/05/recession-vacation-bike-pulled-camper-built-from-salvage/">Recession Vacation: bike-pulled camper built from salvage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 05 Sep 2009 15:02:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Big Rig Jig - Click above for image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<blockquote>Big Rig Jig is a rumination on power as manifest in the relationship between humankind and nature. The sculpture utilizes two decommissioned 18-wheeler tanker trucks, referencing a global oil industry at the nexus of our world's political, social, and environmental systems. By repurposing these symbolically rich objects, the artist conveys his admiration for and anxiety over humanity's power.<br /></blockquote>That's how Mike Ross, a designer working on large-scale sculptures since 1998, describes Big Rig Jig, the twin 18-wheeler piece of art seen above. We're not going to try and interpret that too much, but the inspiration obviously has something to do with society's dependence on oil. Debuted at Burning Man back in 2007, the sculpture has continued to be on display over the last few years at various events and festivals.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/">Burning Man 2007: Big Rig Jig</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/a_lush.i.ous_600x403_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/big_rig_jig_night_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/d_evacado_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/e_aqui-ali_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/burning-man-2007-big-rig-jig/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/ff_mayhem_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://bigrigjig.com/">Big Rig Jig</a> via <a href="http://www.greenlaunches.com/other-stuff/big-rig-jig-truck-sculpture-to-show-world-politics-society-and-environment.php">Green Launches</a> | Image: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dr-placebo/" title="Link to dr.placebo's photostream" rel="dc:creator cc:attributionURL">dr.placebo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/18/big-rig-jig-one-artists-take-on-the-global-oil-industry/">Big Rig Jig one artist's take on the global oil industry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 19:28:00 EST. There are few things in this world that embody the American spirit more than the automobile, and transportation of all sorts was on display at this year's festivities. We already showed you <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/15/the-dogsled-pedal-powered-quad-debuts-at-woodward/">The Dogsled</a>, which made its first appearance at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/woodward+2008/">Woodward Dream Cruise</a> just a few weeks before but was actually designed and built for Burning Man. That machine was truly impressive, but take a good look at this Hummer replica that towered over the unique individuals who gathered themselves together at the Playa, a wide desert expanse at the festival. As you can see from the video embedded after the break, the Bummer Hummer was made from wood and painted up in all sorts of crazy hues. According to one party-goer, "It is a statement on the consumerism culture of America, especially with gas at $5 a gallon nowadays." They must be from California. Of course, the wooden Hummer burned in the end. <em>Thanks for the tip, Patrick</em>!<br /><br />Check out more vehicles from Burning Man 2008 in our gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/">Vehicles of Burning Man 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/000_burningmanvehicles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/001_burningmanvehicles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/002_burningmanvehicles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/003_burningmanvehicles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-of-burning-man-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/004_burningmanvehicles_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/gallery?o=45&amp;f=/c/a/2008/08/26/BAEE12J3FL.DTL&amp;type=burningman2008">SFGate</a>, photos by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bmiller1710/">bmiller1710</a> | CC2.0]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/02/hummer-crashes-burning-man-in-a-big-way/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HUMMER crashes Burning Man in a big way</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/02/hummer-crashes-burning-man-in-a-big-way/">HUMMER crashes Burning Man in a big way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 12:59:00 EST. Although its final destination is this year's Burning Man out in the Southwestern desert, the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/07/25/nextcruise-green-event-will-run-alongside-woodward-dream-cruise/">NextCruise event</a>, a green-minded cruising alternative running alongside the Dream Cruise, has brought the machine out to play a bit early. Looking over the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/">build pictures</a>, this pedal-powered machine looks like a scaled-down monster truck with its fully-triangulated frame made from steel and its solid axles front and rear. The frame is suspended both by transverse leaf-springs mounted above the axles and coil-overs at each corner. All four riders pedal to power the right rear wheel with the left rear seeing braking duties. Good 'ole-fashioned American ingenuity at its best. We'll see if we can track this thing down while it's stuck in traffic on Woodward Ave. Saturday afternoon. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/">Woodward 2008 Preview: The Dogsled</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/the_dogsled_quad_16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/the_dogsled_quad_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/the_dogsled_quad_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/the_dogsled_quad_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/woodward-2008-preview-the-dogsled/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/the_dogsled_quad_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.thirstybeachlandscaping.com/quadbike/index.html">The Dogsled</a> via <a href="http://jalopnik.com/400352/people+powered-quadcycle-makes-stop-at-woodward-on-way-to-burning-man">Jalopnik</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/15/the-dogsled-pedal-powered-quad-debuts-at-woodward/">The Dogsled pedal-powered quad debuts at Woodward</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 09:26:00 EST. While most vehicles have their parts transplanted into new vehicles or converted into <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/08/is-your-next-tank-of-gas-from-seat-foam/ ">fuel</a>, some become works of art.<br /><br />The "Galaxyman" is one such art piece. Made from a used Ford Galaxy MPV, the sculpture&nbsp;is one of German performance artist HA Schult's latest works. Schult first displayed his 1,000(!) similar sculptures in 1996, and has brought the exhibit around the world to such places as the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The exhibit is currently on display in front of the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, and will touch U.S. soil later this year while stopping in New York City.<br /><br />[Sources: Ford Motor Company; World Car Fans]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/15/recycled-ford-galaxy-mpv-travels-world-as-galaxyman/">Recycled Ford MPV travelling world as 'Galaxyman'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 15 May 2006 18:03:00 EST.
