The news media has turned its empty head to the deeper world of automotive coverage, beyond the front lines of dismal sales numbers and Cash For Clunkers.

None other than spy photographer extraodinaire Brenda Priddy has now been on the receiving end of the gentle, semi-informative coverage mainstream news is so deft at cranking out. A quick package on ABC's flagship World News Tonight broadcast was but a precursor to a more in-depth piece on Nightline that blows Brenda's cover and profiles her hard work in the searing desert heat. Hit the jump to view both videos. Thanks for all your tips!

[Source: ABC News]

California-based Devon, you may recall, was the sole bidder Chrysler reported for its Viper franchise, and it's certainly conceivable that despite the failed bid attempt, the car seen here would still feature a certain 8.4-liter V10 underhood. Indeed, given that Devon continues to tout its creation as "America's next great supercar," that scenario seems rather likely.

The GTX is slated to make its first appearance at next month's Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance (we'll be sure to grab some live photos), and the coupe is tipped to go on sale in the U.S. first in 2010, with other markets to follow. Check out the gallery of renderings below as well as a video of the teasers after the jump.

Gallery: Devon Motor Works GTX renderings

[Source: The Detroit Bureau]
Continue reading Spy Shots: First-ever in-the-fiber shots of Devon GTX supercar emerge

Spy Shots: First-ever in-the-fiber shots of Devon GTX supercar emerge originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Jul 2009 13:40:00 EST. The system takes advantage of energy stored under braking and translates it into extra power.

While Modena has yet to confirm when the car will make its debut, AE reckons it is due for the Frankfurt Motor Show this Fall. If the F450 follows company protocol, European sales will follow shortly thereafter, with U.S. sales commencing sometime in calendar 2010.

[Source: AutoExpress]
Spy Shots: Ferrari F450 mule spotted fresh off the truck originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 13:28:00 EST. But now, she has been outed as The Most Famous Spy in History on a website called ShareRanks.

This shooter of top secret sedans and covert convertibles has been ranked above notorious agents such as Mata Hari who was executed as a German spy. Priddy even tops Revolutionary War spy Nathan "One Life to Live" Hale who is probably in every American history textbook in the country.

That's her in the photo with her back to the camera. It's the only photo she'd authorize for use with this story. "After all, I don't want people to know what I look like!" she said in an e-mail to us (one we suspect that originated in her underground bunker somewhere in the Arizona desert). Then again, someone of her spy caliber could have sent it from right here in the Autoblog offices. Hmmmm.

As someone who makes a living off exposing the secrets of the auto industry, how does she feel about her newfound fame? We asked her that and a few more questions that you can read the answer to after the jump.

Photo Copyright Brenda Priddy, used with permission.
Continue reading World's most famous spy ever is... All that is scheduled to change for the 2010 model year, as the bow-tie will unveil a new Cobalt based of the same global Delta platform that will also underpin the Volt and next Saturn Astra.

Brenda Priddy and her voyeur minions caught a well-disguised 2010 Cobalt roaming the streets, and while it looks like it was doused in silly-string, we can still see plenty of promise. Most noticeably, the 'Balt's profile looks much more refined than that of the current model, with a more graceful greenhouse and prominent nose. Thankfully, the handsome two-tier grill looks to be making its way over from the Malibu, which will help further separate the Cobalt from its economy car past. A sedan and coupe will be available, and we're assuming that we'll see a new, faster Cobalt SS, as well.

High gas prices already have the Cobalt selling in record numbers, and if GM can pull off a better Cobalt by next summer, the amount of them leaving dealer lots should grow considerably. Sources claimed that the trucklet would carry a "Crew" badge, but when the wraps came off, the Journey was born. So much for reliable sources, right? Wrong.

Brenda Priddy actually has in her possession a "Crew" nameplate that was acquired through her normal mischievous means, confirming the rumor that the name was changed just two weeks before its reveal in Germany. Up for grabs in this eBay auction is a piece of camo that came off of a Jaguar XF prototype, which is kind of fun if you're into Jags or just offbeat automobilia. But there's an even better reason to bid - all the money raised will go to charity.

What the top bidder receives, besides the knowledge that he or she has helped a good cause, is "a sticky wad of camouflage from the not-yet-out 2009 Jaguar XF!! The "camouflage", in this case, is a small bundle or wad of silver and black SUPER-STICKY duct-tape-like adhesive." And Brenda herself promises it is authentic. "We personally witnessed as an engineer peeled a bit of tape off a prototype and then threw it way in a garbage can at a remote gas station in an undisclosed location."

[Source: eBay]
Continue reading eBay Find of the Day: Priddy auctioning Jag XF camo for good cause

eBay Find of the Day: Priddy auctioning Jag XF camo for good cause originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 15:03:00 EST. The latest Accord to be caught by this ace spy photographer is apparently the 2008 Honda Accord V6. Note the dual rear exhausts when you click through to see the full-size pics at Straightline. Another lightly-disguised sedan undergoing final testing, this V6 differs little from the previous base sedan we showed you a couple of weeks ago. Slightly different 7-spoke wheels and a sunroof are the only apparent changes besides the dual pipes out back. Oh, and one interior shot shows a fairly large binnacle for the nav system in the top center of the dash.

Not meant to set the design world atwitter, the new Accord is inoffensive if not handsome. The sedan styling echoes that of the Accord coupe that was unveiled as a concept last January in Detroit and has also been captured by Brenda Priddy & Company. Lacking the honeycomb grille of the coupe, the sedan offers a slightly more mainstream look that should continue to win hundreds of thousands of buyers annually in the midsize sedan segment.

Rumors suggest those buyers will find a bit more personality under the hood, via a new 3.5L V6 with at least 270 horsepower on tap. Lower emissions and and better mileage are expected too, thanks to Honda's new cylinder deactivation feature. Looks like we'll be getting a new acronym in the process (VTEC, ftw!). Production of the new Accord should start in September or October with deliveries to dealerships arriving not long after.

[Source: Straightline]
Spy Shots: 2008 Honda Accord V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 13:34:00 EST. The Accord is certainly one of Honda's most important products, and we can see from these shots that the sedan will look similar but not identical to the Accord coupe that was unveiled as a concept last January in Detroit and has already been spotted out in the wild. Brenda Priddy & Co. notes the sedan is lacking the honeycomb grille from the coupe and certain lines of the body are different. In our estimation, it's a fairly vanilla design, which is in keeping with this car's purpose of appealing to the largest demographic possible in the midsize sedan segment.

While this mule was likely a four-cylinder model, we expect a new 3.5L V6 from Honda for the Accord with at least 270 horsepower when the car debuts later this year. Expect lower emissions, however, and tricks like cylinder deactivation to increase the car's fuel economy at the same time. The four-cylinder, meanwhile, will likely have around 180 horsepower. Production of the new Accord should start in September or October with deliveries to dealerships arriving not long after.

Check out higher resolution spy shots of the 2008 Honda Accord sedan from various angles by viewing the gallery. Sure enough, we now have some genuine, professional spy shots in all their DSLR glory, and it's quite a selection. Brenda Priddy and crew captured all angles of Honda's new coupe, including the interior. The car is still wearing some light camo on the front and rear fascia and three quarter windows, but otherwise it is virtually naked.

What you can see looks a lot like the concept we saw in LA and Detroit. Compare the pics in our gallery to those at the Read link and you'll see a handsome coupe that has some upscale details and a fairly aggressive overall look, especially in those wheel arches that continue into the lower body styling front to rear in one continuous sweep.

Differences between the concept and production version appear to be minor. The grille appears more car-like, the exhaust tips have been made more practical, and there are different, but equally attractive wheels filling the fenderwells. This version is also sporting a trunklid spoiler and repositioned cyclops brakelight out back. With the still-partially-taped taillights, the rear almost looks like a Chrysler, and the front reminds some of a Scion tC, but when it finally emerges fully unclothed this fall, it should be a unique design. The partial interior shot shows a two-tone black over tan interior with a dash that looks rather similar to the current model.

Click the read link for half a dozen large photos at Temple of VTEC.

Thanks to shadow7 for the tip.

[Source: Temple of VTEC]
Spy Shots: New 2008 Accord spy photos originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 11:33:00 EST. As these Brenda Priddy spy shots show, changes are afoot. Expected sometime next year, the 2009 model Cayman will feature a revised nose and rear fascia with reshaped lights that use LEDs. These are basically the same changes we noted on the recent spy shots of the '08 Boxster, which makes sense.

The front air intakes are more rounded, giving spotters an immediate point to differentiate old from new. From the back you'll notice the new bumper with its cat's eye lenses housing the aforementioned LED lighting. As with the Boxster news, there is still no word on powertrain or interior updates. Thankfully, the sexy flanks remain intact and we can only presume that the Cayman will soldier on as one of the best driving experiences on the road today. They're more like the odd couple, really. However, if said Porsche is still not quite ready for prime time, then doing some winter weather testing in REALLY cold weather makes sense. Plus, it doesn't hurt that you'd be away from prying eyes -- at least most of the time. It seems the Brenda Priddy network of automotive shutterbugs has managed to capture the new 997 Turbo Cabriolet ahead of its official debut. There have been a few disguised prototypes and mules caught before now, but these are the first shots of a clean, unwrapped car. And it looks good. The Car Connection has the full size version of the image at right, as well as an illustration that looks pretty spiffy.

This newest all-wheel-drive convertible should share most of its mechanicals with the coupe, including that ripping twin-turbo, 3.6-liter flat-six. You know...the one that makes 480 smooth horsepower, all controlled with your right foot and your choice of either a six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic. The Turbo Cab Tiptronic in 996 guise was Car and Driver's quickest Turbo ever before the 997 hit the scene, so don't scoff at the ragtop/slushbox combo. After all, it's still a Porsche Turbo.. The droptop might show up in Geneva this week (it's due in the Spring), but you can see it right now with a simple click. Expect pricing to start about 10 grand above the hardtop model's MSRP of $122,900.

[Source: The Car Connection]
Spy Shots: 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 09:19:00 EST. With spy shots by Brenda Priddy in hand, Edmund's Straighline is speculating that the recently updated 3.7L V-6 will be replaced by Chrysler's 4.0L unit and that the existing 4.7L V-8s will simply get a few extra ponies. Besides the engine changes, this freshened Dakota features a more rounded and chrome-laden grille, new headlamps and relocated badge. Even more importantly, however, the new Dakota will see some much-needed changes on the inside as well. To recap, WR took a Corvette Z06 and masked it up with tape, fake fender flares and a hood scoop made from cardboard. The result was a car that looked convincingly like a prototype for the "Blue Devil" super Vette currently being developed by General Motors. The fake "Blue Devil" was then driven around Metro Detroit, which led to the public taking pics of the car and unknowingly submitting them to other media outlets as genuine shots of the "Blue Devil". The shots were then published online by The Car Connection, AutoWeek, MotorTrend and other sites like this one.

We were curious how professional spy photographers reacted to finding out that someone had driven around a faux prototype, perhaps one they themselves could've shot and sold for money to their clients. We asked both Brenda Priddy and Chris Doane, two names you should know if you follow spy shots that we've covered on Autoblog, to give us their take on the prank Winding Road pulled.

You can read a statement prepared by Chris Doane and a short interview with Brenda Priddy after the jump.
Continue reading VetteGate: Spy photographers respond to fake Blue Devil pics

VetteGate: Spy photographers respond to fake Blue Devil pics originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Dec 2006 12:58:00 EST. Brenda Priddy pulled out her good lens and took a few shots of a heavily camouflaged Nissan Altima Coupe.

To refresh, according to Auto Express magazine, the coupe will be shared with Renault which will call it the Laguna Coupe. It's expected to be powered by the same 3.5-liter V6 as the Altima with around 260 hp. That should give the Laguna a 0-60 mph time of less than seven seconds and a top speed around at least 140 mph. An automatic gearbox is expected to be the most popular choice in shifters. Prices on the Laguna Coupé are being pegged at around £25,000 ($47,400) when it reaches showrooms next year.

[Source: The Car Connection, Auto Express]
Spy Shots: Nissan Altima coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Nov 2006 12:57:00 EST. She not only reached her goal but exceeded it by 50% with a lot of help from generous Autoblog readers. Brenda has decided to be extra generous and is opening up her spy coffers to thank each person who donated with a token of her gratitude. The list of who donated and what each person will be receiving is below. Ya see, you give a little and you get a little. Isn't it nice how things work out like that? If you'd still like to donate, you can do so by clicking on this link and opening up your wallet.
That time of year when designers roll out their most extravagant, over-the-top Spring fashion ideas so we can have the Target knock-offs next April when the weather actually allows us to wear them. While Y3, Vera and DK may be the stars in NY, here at Autoblog we turn to that well-known and well-loved spy photog fashionista Brenda Priddy. Brenda's line of casual wear was recently unveiled with much less fanfare on cafepress.

We were slightly disappointed by the lack of camouflage or black garments in the lineup, but the HHR SS and Mercedes ML spyshots and "Espionage" in many languages look good on the T-shirts, camis, jerseys, Baby Dolls and even onesies that are available. And for those who don't want to necessarily wear their passions on their sleeves, there is a whole range of gift and desktop items available with the same designs.

[Source: Cafepress via TheCarConnection]
Brenda Priddy's fall collection originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Sep 2006 16:28:00 EST. Today we bring you video by Brenda Priddy & Co. courtesy of Streetfire.net of the R8 in all its glory. Priddy and her cohorts followed the car everywhere, capturing shots of it in just about every possible state of operation.

The R8 is fully disguised for a brief time at the beginning of the video, but it sheds the veil of secrecy pretty quickly and Priddy treats us to an eyeful. In addition to the mundane -- refuelings, parked shots, etc. -- we see the engineers turn the car loose (it sounds great) as they make hasty departures with the hammer down and scoot along mostly deserted highways with the spy photogs giving chase. Props to the R8's handlers, who make cursory attempts to block the camera's view with their bodies (when the car's parked) and a pair of SUVs (when they get ready to roll), but for the most part accept the fact that Priddy's going to get her shots and mug playfully for the camera.

Thanks for the tip, Omar!

[Source: Streetfire.net]
VIDEO: The Audi R8 - undisguised and unleashed! originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Aug 2006 07:02:00 EST. Check out the extended rear fender flares and raised gas gap, both both clear indicators that the 6's sheetmetal will be expanding. While it's difficult to make out a face through the front camouflage, the front end is also clearly larger. That's a good thing, as Mazda needs to make room underhood for Ford's new 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6 that will be available on the Mazda6. The platform on which the car will ride is reported to be a variant of the one underpinning the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner. This lends credence to the rumor that all Mazda6 models will be available with all-wheel drive, not just the MazdaSpeed6. Expect Mazda's family sedan to still be offered in sedan, wagon and hatchback form, and a hybrid will join the group at a later date, likely after the Fusion goes semi-electric sometime in 2008.

[Source: Winding Road]
Spy Shots: 2008 Mazda6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Aug 2006 14:37:00 EST. He stumbled upon a 2008 Ford Super Duty F-250 Powerstroke in a parking lot and started snapping away. The driver eventually returned and this is where Doane's day took a sharp turn towards the bizarre and frightening. The driver in question, who our sources tell us is indeed a Ford employee, snapped a synapse and chased Doane on public roads for a half an hour, including following him in and out of parking lots, tailgating him while running through highway traffic, and nearly swallowing his car in the gaping maw of the F-250's grille at stoplights.

To hear it in Doane's own words is a treat, and you can do so here. As for the Ford employee who lost control of his 'roid rage, it's just a 2008 Super Duty, man. Chill. We've got three posts up linking to spy shots of the next F-350 here, here and here. It's not like you were driving a C1 Focus or next-gen Mustang.

Thanks SobeSVT for the tip!

[Source: Cheers and Gears]
Ford employee chases spy photographer in 2008 F-250 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Jul 2006 20:01:00 EST.
