American muscle. Italian design. Cadillac Allanté notwithstanding, that right there is a recipe for success. And few were ever as capable of straddling that divide with one foot in each of the best of both worlds as De Tomaso. Like modern-day Pagani, De Tomaso was founded by an Argentinean based in Modena, and the small automaker created some of the most exotic machinery of its day. Chief among them was the Mangusta - its Italian name means 'mongoose,' which might not seem as ferocious an animal to name a sportscar after as, say, a jaguar, viper or stingray, until you realize that the little rodents are known for eating cobras. Then the Mangusta's mission statement becomes a little clearer.

Like the later revival (which was subsequently sold under Qvale and then MG badges), to say nothing of its prey, the original Mangusta packed Ford V8 power: From 1967 through 1971, 400 Mangustas rolled out of the De Tomaso factory with 289s or 302s installed, out of which fewer than 200 are believed to still be around.

So it's not every day that one goes up for sale. And what you see here is no ordinary Mangusta, either. Its Boss 302 engine was retrofitted with race-spec cylinder heads and intake manifold sourced from Dan Gurney's legendary Eagle racer. The body, which comes on an original chassis separate from the engine in this eBay auction lot, has a touch of rust despite a restoration by celebrity garage Pino's Auto Body and it's painted Ferrari red. The stunning rosso exterior is complimented by a tan leather interior that even has a sterling-silver nameplate. This particular Mangusta once belonged to cosmetics heir and noted car collector Jack Nethercutt before passing into the hands of Vector founder Gerard Wiegert, giving this exceptional exotic an even more interesting pedigree. Today's evidence: the just-announced FPV Cobra, a limited-edition Boss 302-powered tire incinerator that comes in both sedan and ute form. (Oh, the Boss 302 moniker stands for 302 kilowatts, not cubic inches, btw.) All Cobras are white with blue stripes, and the 5.4L Boss 302 V8 dishes out 404 horses and 398 lb-ft of torque. All that juice is directed aft via a standard 6-speed manual or a ZF 6-speed auto that's available at no additional cost.

Other baubles include standard leather, spiffy 19" wheels, Brembos (which can be further upgraded as well), all the expected badging, and in the case of the sedan, FPV's track-ready R-Spec suspension. Total Cobra production is limited to 500 vehicles, with 4-doors outnumbering utes 400 to 100. Pricing will start at $65,110 AUD for the sedan and $61,200 AUD for the ute. In other news, US customers have the new Focus to look forward to, which looks almost as cool as this Aussie Cobra, assuming you're wearing a blindfold.

Follow the jump for the official press release. We just told you about the one-off Roush BlackJack Mustang convertible that will be going across the block, and there was the pair of bitchin' OCC Eleanor GT500 E Mustangs that set Westworld rockin' in January, only to be topped by the pair of black Bosses a little while later. And who can forget the other Shelby specials that have brought outrageous amounts for the right to get car number one? The first GT500 went for $600,000 last year. The first Shelby GT matched it. In all fairness, those bids were more about giving to Carroll's charity than getting the car itself, as good as those 'Stangs might be.

And now we get word that Ford is going to do it again. It plans to debut a new Mustang special edition at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach this weekend. The only details we have right now are that the car will be limited to just 500 copies and that the rights to car number one will likely bring a huge number for the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. We're guessing it will be a Shelby GT convertible, but wouldn't be surprised to see a Boss 302, Mach 1, Bullitt or even a GT350 roll across the stage on Saturday. Any predictions?

[Source: Mustang Evolution]
New Mustang to debut at Barrett-Jackson Auction March 31 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 15:28:00 EST. After a brief drive in a Shelby GT500, we were longing for more. Then we had a Roush 427R that Eric subjected to some serious instrumented testing. It performed well at the dragstrip and backed up its horsepower claims on the dyno. We also had some fun for a few days behind the wheel of a Saleen supercharged convertible, as well. That Saleen S281 SC Mustang was a 2006 with 435 hp and a lot of "hey, look at me" add-ons. A real kick in the pants in a straight line, but not our first choice for the twisty roads we enjoy so much. When we returned that S281 to Saleen, they mentioned that their newest special edition product would be available soon. When the words "Parnelli Jones" escaped the rep's lips, we felt a surge of adrenaline that led to an involuntary, "How soon?"

The 2007 Saleen/Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang was first shown at the New York Auto Show last year. It promised 370 hp and a beefed up suspension that would emulate the performance of the 1970 championship-winning Boss 302 that Parnelli Jones helped make famous back in the golden era of Trans-Am racing. With retro touches like the Grabber Orange paint, black stripes, rear wing, jutting front lip, chrome surrounds on the grille and rear lights, rear window louvers, Minilite-like wheels, and the Shaker hood, it instantly became our favorite Mustang.

Follow the jump for the rest of the review and do yourself a favor and check out our high-resolution gallery of pics. One of the pairs being offered included two 1969 Boss Mustangs. The pair of black 'Stangs both have white stripes and 4 speed gearboxes. One is a 429 while the other has the high winding 302 that ran in the halcyon days of Trans-Am. Each engine features the dual four barrel Holley carburetor setup (you do remember what carbs are don't you?). The pair are fully restored and sold for a gavel price of $530,000.

The Barrett-Jackson press release is after the jump.

[Source: Frank Filipponio]

Gallery: 2007 Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale: Boss pair

Continue reading 2007 Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale: Boss pair Sold at $530,000

2007 Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale: Boss pair Sold at $530,000 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 08:27:00 EST. Taking a page out of automotive history, Galpin Ford in North Hills, California is one of those dealers known for adding some of their own tuning magic to factory performance cars. Just like the Yenko and Baldwin-Motion Chevys, Royal Pontiacs, and Grand-Spaulding Dodges, Galpin has built a reputation for doing things to their showroom vehicles to make them stand out at the local dragstrip or cruise night. They've been doing these specials for a long time and eventually built Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) in nearby Van Nuys to handle all of these tuner car projects.

At SEMA this year, they showed another new version of everybody's favorite tuner blank canvas, the Ford Mustang. This particular pony car was cloaked in the same Grabber Blue paint, shaker hood, rear louvers, jutting front lip, flat black hood and stripe package that defined Ford's Boss 302 back in 1970. And what self-respecting Mustang would be caught dead showing off all that Boss 302 garb without something under hood to back up the promise? Not this Galpin 'Stang, that's for sure. Galpin searched through the Ford performance parts catalog and picked out a new 302 crate motor for this project. Mated to a Tremec 5-speed, it should give modern mod-motor Mustang mourners something to brag about.

This particular car is for shows only right now, but shows an outside the box kind of thinking that makes Galpin special. Sort of a reverse resto mod. We liked it when we saw it in Vegas, but with approximately 6,000 other custom Mustangs on hand, it was hard to single this one. Especially when it was sitting next to the display of GT500s.

[Source: Galpin Auto Sports via Jalopnik]
Galpin's Boss 302 Mustang massage originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Jan 2007 17:01:00 EST. The car features the brand new BOSS 302 crate motor producing, from what we hear, a relatively modest 340 out of a potential 500 horsepower. Aside from that, we can only go on what we see since no information was accompanying the car. What extra info do you need? It's got the BOSS 302 graphics, louvers, a deep chin spoiler, wood-rimmed steering wheel and T-handle shifter. We have to seriously knock Galpin, though, for those GAS (Galpin Auto Sports) wheels that make the retro muscle car look too tunerific.

Just as the BOSS 302 crate motor is a precursor to the return of the BOSS production engine, the Galpin BOSS 302 paves the way for a production BOSS Mustang that's due in 2009. The production version of the BOSS engine, which will share virtually nothing with the crate motor besides its name, will first debut in the F-150 (remember the Hurricane engine? same thing) before showing up in a BOSS Mustang suitable for mass consumption. Until then, if you're jonesing for a BOSS Mustang you'll have to hit up Galpin.
Continue reading SEMA: Galpin's BOSS Mustang heralds return of production version

SEMA: Galpin's BOSS Mustang heralds return of production version originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 21:31:00 EST. There are a lot of hardcore enthusiasts and gamers, however, who go to great lengths to modify and personalize their computers. Craig Tate (aka Tech Daddy) is recognized as one of the premier modders out there today, and his latest creation is something the staff here at Autoblog would pretty much kill for: The BOSS FX-57.

Craig is a big fan of the 1969 BOSS 302, and used that car's styling cues as the design inspiration for his new PC. Painted in that familiar orange, and sporting custom BOSS striping, the FX-57 designation goes where you'd normally find the "302," replacing the car's displacement with the name of the AMD Athlon 64-bit processor that gives this BOSS its horsepower.

A custom hood scoop mounted on the top of the case acts as the exhaust port for an "blow hole" fan. "Supercharged 6800GT" adorns the sides, a reference to the machine's video card. Around back, the exhaust fan grilles are made of RC car wheels (brilliant), and the open side panel shows the world perhaps the coolest (and simplest, according to Craig) mod of all: a real air filter mounted atop the CPU heatsink fan. We're not worthy.

Custom lighting adorns everything, and the mouse and keyboard are also painted to match the case. We'll admit to not knowing of any other auto-themed custom PC's, but we're going to go out on a limb here and say that Craig Tate's one-of-a-kind BOSS FX-57 is the benchmark against which all others will be judged.

Check out Craig Tate's complete photoessay on the build at Bit-Tech.net.

[Source: Bit-Tech.net]
BOSS FX-57: PC modder's tribute to a classic Mustang originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Aug 2006 14:03:00 EST. Motor Trend is reporting in its September issue that the Boss Mustang is definitely a go for the model year before a refreshed Mustang bows in 2008. Our own Eric Bryant reported it will likely be powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.4-liter V8 version of Ford's Mod motor architecture, while Motor Trend claims it will be a V8 of about 5.0-liters in size. Eric and MT do agree, however, that the Boss Mustang will make 390 horsepower.

MT also reveals that the Boss Mustang will get the Shelby GT500's complete suspension set up and that the interior will be stripped out to reduce weight. It sounds like the Boss Mustang will be a great pony car to purchase before the muscle cars are renewed in a few years. It'll likely be as light as a V6 Mustang, more powerful than a GT, and less expensive than a Shelby GT500.

[Source: Sept. issue of Motor Trend]
Boss Mustang will be stripper with GT500 parts originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Jul 2006 08:02:00 EST.
