<div align="center"><em><strong><small>BMW X5 M - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />According to a post on the forums at <em>GermanCarZone</em>, BMW is currently working on a new version of its 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine, which puts out 286 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque in its current, twin-turbocharged guise. To bump that power peak a bit higher, those crazy German engineers are rumored to be adding a third turbocharger that would boost horsepower to around 350.<br /><br />This new tri-turbo diesel V6 would see its first application in a BMW X5 Performance Diesel. In a bid to maintain the oil-burners fuel efficiency, BMW would add hybrid componentry that includes stop/start and regenerative braking. These bits would earn the big SUV entrance into the automaker's Efficient Dynamics club.<br /><br />In addition to the high-performance engine, the X5 Performance Diesel would reportedly get a unique body kit that includes subtle lips around the wheel arches along with revised air intakes and a front spoiler. It's too early to verify any of these rumors, but we'll be sure to keep our ears to the ground for more.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/">BMW X6 M</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/000_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/001_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/002_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/003_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/004_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.germancarzone.com/x5-sav/29012-performance-efficiency-next-level-bmw-x5-performance-diesel.html">GermanCarZone</a> via <a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/04/10/rumor-bmw-x5-to-use-a-tri-turbo-diesel-engine/">BMWBlog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/10/rumormill-bmw-looking-at-triple-turbo-diesel-for-new-performanc/">Rumormill: BMW looking at triple-turbo diesel for new performance X5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 14:29:00 EST. <p>The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/03/detroit-08-preview-bmw-does-diesel-will-show-us-specx5-xdrive/">BMW X5 xDrive35d and 335d</a>, both <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/13/detroit-2008-live-reveal-of-bmws-335d-and-x5-xdrive35d/">revealed live</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>, will be coming to the States in mid-October according to the latest rumor. The common engine will be BMW's dual turbocharged 3.0L inline-six diesel, good for 265 hp and 425 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, these two vehicles will be among the most fuel-efficient and best performing in their respective classes. In addition, with their urea injection system and particulate filters, they should be among the cleanest too. </p>
<p>We called our contacts within BMW to confirm or deny the rumor, and as expected, our sources could only reiterate BMW's previous official statements that the cars would be "out by fall." </p>

Over at the BMW stand, the automaker will be showing off its Vision EfficientDynamics Concept that's packing a twin-turbo, 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel that's mated to a hybrid motor. The diesel mill alone is making 204 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, but the addition of a compact generator increases power by another 20 hp and 154 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent through an eight-speed gearbox developed by ZF that features longer ratios to make the most of the miserly mill. BMW cites mpg figures in the 43.5-range, with 172 g/km of CO2 being shot on the tailpipe. Additionally, BMW has fitted a regenerative braking system to the X5, along with roof-mounted solar panels and aerodynamically enhanced 19-inch wheels.<br /><br />All the details are available after the jump in BMW's press release.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/">BMW X5 Vision EfficientDynamics Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/bmw_vision_hyb_gen01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/bmw_vision_hyb_gen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/bmw_vision_hyb_gen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/bmw_vision_hyb_gen04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/bmw_vision_hyb_gen05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/21/geneva-08-preview-bmw-twin-turbo-diesel-hybrid-x5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Geneva '08 Preview: BMW twin-turbo diesel hybrid X5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/21/geneva-08-preview-bmw-twin-turbo-diesel-hybrid-x5/">Geneva '08 Preview: BMW twin-turbo diesel hybrid X5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 16:31:00 EST.
