<br />
BMW isn't taking any chances with its reputation for dynamics with the 7 Series Active Hybrid. To its 449-hp and 479-lb-ft 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 heart it adds a 60-pound, 35-cell lithium-ion battery in the boot. The battery doesn't take too much away from the trunk since it replaces the rear-seat air-conditioning unit from the standard 7.<br />
<br />
The battery boosts maximum torque to 516 lb-ft when everything is really humming, and that gets the huge-ish hybrid to 60 in 4.9 seconds rowing through the eight-speed automatic. The battery, a judicious foot, and hybrid stalwarts like brake energy regeneration can get you 25 mpg. Until Brad and Angelina finish with their Hydrogen 7, this is your best bet for a caring Bavarian luxo-barge.<br />

<br /> "High performance hybrid" - an oxymoron? Not according to BMW, which has two new hybrids coming to the upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/frankfurt-auto-show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a>. One of the two, the X6 Hybrid, promises to be the most powerful hybrid vehicle ever offered with 478 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque from its twin electric motors and 4.4-liter V8 engine combined.<br /> <br /> According to what appear to be <a href="http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=291513">leaked specs from BMW</a>, the X6 Hybrid will scoot to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds while returning a 20% fuel mileage improvement over the standard X6 with its twin-turbo V8. To set the hybrid apart from its more conventional sibling, BMW will bestow the new fuel-saver with a power dome hood (musclecar elements on a hybrid - HA!) and a bespoke metallic blue hue.<br /> <br /> Quicker yet will be the upcoming 7 Series Hybrid, which will reportedly be able to cover the run to 60 in under five seconds flat via the 459 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque provided by its V8-based hybrid powertrain combination. BMW predicts an X6 Hybrid-matching 20-percent increase in fuel efficiency from its 7 Series Hybrid.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/">BMW X6 ActiveHybrid Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/bmw-x6-hybrid-large_7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_7" title="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_7" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/bmw-x6-hybrid-large_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_6" title="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_6" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/bmw-x6-hybrid-large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_2" title="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_2" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/bmw-x6-hybrid-large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_1" title="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_1" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-activehybrid-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/bmw-x6-hybrid-large_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_3" title="bmw-x6-hybrid-large_3" /></a></div><br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/">LA 2008: BMW 7-series ActiveHybrid</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/11/7-hybrid-1280-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/11/7-hybrid-1280-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/11/7-hybrid-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/11/7-hybrid-1280-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/11/7-hybrid-1280-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/242409/">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/12/bmw-x6-hybrid-to-be-worlds-most-powerful-gas-electric-vehicle/">BMW X6 Hybrid to be world's most powerful gas-electric vehicle?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 15:57:00 EST. <strong> <br /></strong>With BMW investing heavily in its Efficient Dynamics program, the next stage could be unveiled at its home-turf Frankfurt show this coming September. Reports out of France suggest that this is where the Bavarian automaker will unveil its 750Hi, a hybrid version of its latest 7-Series flagship sedan.<br /><br />Previewed by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/22/paris-preview-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/">7-Series ActiveHybrid concept</a> in Paris last fall, Munich's assault on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/08/not-live-not-in-nyc-mercedes-benz-unveils-2010-s600-and-s400-h/">recently revealed S400 Hybrid</a> from arch-rival Mercedes-Benz and the Lexus LS600h is expected to pair an electric motor with its highly-rated 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, providing over 400 horsepower in the unassisted, gas-burning version. While there is no word on how big the electric motor will be, but if Mercedes' solution is anything to go by, look for something in the neighborhood of 20 horsepower, while the new eight-speed automatic that debuted on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/09/bmw-announces-new-v12-powered-760i-and-760li-in-europe/">the new 760i</a> in Shanghai could see duty in the production hybrid due to potential packaging benefits. If the reports emerge as genuine, we should have more for you over the course of the summer as more details emerge.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.automobile-magazine.fr/actualites/scoops/bmw/bmw_750hi">L'Automobile</a><a href="http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-750hi-coming-to-the-frankfurt-motor-show/" />]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/30/bmw-to-debut-production-hybrid-7-in-frankfurt/">BMW to debut production hybrid 7 in Frankfurt?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 10:29:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2009 BMW 7 Series</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />We already knew pretty much everything there is to know about the U.S. 2009 7 Series, but BMW pulled the covers, both literally and symbolically, off its new range-topper right on schedule anyway. In person, the new 7 has much more presence than it appears to have in photos, with an eye-catching crease that runs the length of the car and incorporates the large protruding door handles. The only engine option at the time of launch is the twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that's capable of launching the big 7 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, but we'd be surprised if a force-fed 3.0L gas-powered inline-six didn't make an appearance sooner or later, as well. The Bavarian automaker also revealed that it has production plans for a hybrid 7 Series as previewed by its Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid and believes it can get it launched within a year. What's more, BMW made a big deal about its upcoming diesel technology, so we could definitely see an oil-burning 7 Series on our shores before too long.<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/">LA 2008: BMW Concept 7-series ActiveHybrid</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/01_bmw_active_7er_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/02_bmw_active_7er_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/03_bmw_active_7er_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/04_bmw_active_7er_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-bmw-concept-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/05_bmw_active_7er_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/">2009 BMW 750Li</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/101_750li_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/105_750li_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/106_750li_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/107_750li_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-750li/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/108_750li_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/">2009 BMW 7 Series ActiveHybrid</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/bmw_7_activehybrid_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/bmw_7_activehybrid_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/bmw_7_activehybrid_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/bmw_7_activehybrid_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-activehybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/bmw_activehybrid_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <span style="font-weight: bold;"><small>Live Photos Copyright (C)2008 Jeremy Korzeniewski, Sebastian Blanco, Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/19/la-2008-2009-bmw-7-series-and-concept-7-series-activehybrid-unv/">LA 2008: 2009 BMW 7 Series and Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid unveiled LIVE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 16:26:00 EST. <br />BMW is launching its latest 7 Series flagship in the United States here at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> and has decided to whet our appetites a bit before the official unveiling by releasing an early press release about its latest offerings. As expected, the new 7 is equipped with a direct-injected twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as its sole engine option here in the States. That's not really a bad thing, though, as the force-fed mill pumps out 400 horses and an impressive 450 lb-ft of torque. We've <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/11/first-drive-2009-bmw-x6-xdrive35i-and-xdrive50i/">driven the X6</a> with this powerplant in the past, and are confident it'll have no problem whatsoever getting the big sedan moving at a very brisk clip.<br /><br />Also new for 2009 is BMW's first ever use of a multi-link double wishbone front suspension, which breaks from the German automaker's usual habit of front struts. As you'd expect, there is a long-wheelbase model of the new 7 as well, known as the 750Li, for those who wish to be driven rather than to drive. Perhaps the Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid, which will also be unveiled in just a bit, will foretell a production hybrid version of BMW's range-topper. Stay tuned for live shots of the new 7 in just a few hours.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/">LA 2008: 2009 BMW 750i</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/01_bmw_750i_live_la_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/02_bmw_750i_live_la_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/03_bmw_750i_live_la_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/04_bmw_750i_live_la_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/la-2008-2009-bmw-750i/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/05_bmw_750i_live_la_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/">2009 BMW 7 Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><small>Live photos copyright (C)2008 Jeremy Korzeniewski </small></strong><small><a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/"><strong></strong></a><strong> / Weblogs, Inc.</strong></small><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/19/la-2008-twin-turbo-v8-slated-for-bmw-7-series/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LA 2008: Twin-turbo V8 slated for BMW 7 Series</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/19/la-2008-twin-turbo-v8-slated-for-bmw-7-series/">LA 2008: Twin-turbo V8 slated for BMW 7 Series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 11:58:00 EST.
