The current generation BMW 6 Series has been one of the company's more controversial designs of the past decade, along with the previous-generation 7 Series and Z4. Like most of the rest of the lineup, it will be getting a re-work in the not-too-distant future, and judging from some new photos, it will be following a similar design direction to other recent introductions.

It looks like the bustle back trunk lid (a.k.a. "The Bangle Butt") is being given the heave-ho, although the convertible that was spotted looks like it might be sporting a two-piece rear lid similar to the 5 Series Gran Turismo. It also appears as though there are two cut-lines, the lower one being the one that goes along the side to open for the top to go up and down. The second smaller one higher up might be just for cargo access.

Another element that some will be to see go are the flying buttresses on the top. Thankfully, it appears that BMW has decided to avoid the unnaturally long rear deck that would come with a hard top and retained the fabric variety. At the front, the 6 gets a more vertical grille and headlights that look much like the Z4.

Underhood, the current 4.8-liter V8 will probably be replaced by the newer 4.4-liter twin-turbo and the six-cylinder will probably be the new 300-horsepower single turbo unit just announced for the 5 Series.

[Source: AutoExpress]
Spy Shots: New BMW 6 Series cabrio caught, reveals no more flying buttresses originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Nov 2009 10:56:00 EST. But these days a product cycle over five years is growing long in the proverbial tooth, so the Bavarian automaker is preparing to launch the third-generation 6 by 2011.

Although it is hard to tell much from the spy shots of this heavily disguised test mule, the 2011 6-Series is expected to follow the same form as the current model, although like the new 7-Series and Z4 roadster, it will feature toned-down styling to minimize the controversial "flame surfacing" technique and the so-called "Bangle Butt" that characterizes the current model.

While this convertible test mule appears to be wearing a soft-top, sources point out that the new 6 is expected to go with a folding hard hat in its next iteration (remember that mules for the original Z4 were initially spied wearing a faux canvas roof, only to have the production car carry a retractable hard-top,). It is too early to tell if that means that a hard-top convertible will be the only version offered, but given that the two-door 3 Series is offered in both coupe and cabrio bodystyles, our money is on the 6 Series continuing down both paths.

[Source: CarScoop]
Spy Shots: 2011 BMW 6-Series Cabrio getting swirly-whirly originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 18:30:00 EST. The reason for the recall is that low temperatures coupled with dry conditions can create a static discharge in the fuel line, which interrupts fuel delivery. The fix for the problem is both free and easy, as a BMW dealer will install grounding cables to your engine at no charge. BMW may create the ultimate driving machines, but if you've got a vehicle that meets the description above, we'd suggest hitting the dealer for a fix before the cold weather puts a shock in your fun.

[Source: Bloomberg]
BMW recalling 5 and 6-series, X5s due to stalling originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 08:27:00 EST. The motor in the 635d should produce about 286 hp and 428 ft-lbs. of torque. Motor Authority expects a 0-60 time of about six seconds combined with what will likely be the best fuel consumption of any 6-Series model.

These spy shots show a slightly updated 6-Series model with a revised front bumper, but we know there's a diesel underhood because the spy photographer managed to get a pic of the car's gauges, which show the word "diesel" above the fuel gauge.

Along with the TT 3.0L diesel, the 6-Series is also expected to replace the 630i's engine with the award-winning twin-turbo 3.0L inline six from the the 3-Series. While we may see the new 635i in the U.S. soon enough (currently only the V8 650i is offered), the way things are going we don't expect the 635d to make the trip over anytime soon.

[Source: Motor Authority]
Spy Shots: BMW 6-Series diesel originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2007 18:49:00 EST. Expect to see a revised front and rear fascia on its 6-Series Coupe and Cab in Frankfurt this fall. That's the latest rumor going around, supported by spy shots like the ones we have for you today. Besides a slightly revised new front bumper, there will also be revised taillights and what appears to be a slightly exaggerated rear decklid spoiler. The changes are minimal and easy to miss unless the old and new ones are lined up side-to-side. A new interior is said to be in the works as well, but nothing is expected to change underhood. Not that they needed changing, mind you, but the engines will apparently remain the same: The 258-hp straight-six in the 630i (not available in the U.S.), the 360-hp 4.8-liter V8 in the 650i, and of course the 500-hp 5.0-liter V10 in the M6.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Spy Photos: BMW 6-Series gets nip-tuck originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 14:31:00 EST. The force-fed oil-burner is the same one BMW uses in the 5-series sedan and the very same 535d that AB Green's Mike Magda got to drive (if briefly) during the LA Auto Show last year. That 535d sibling hustles to 60 mph from a standing start in just 6.5 seconds, thanks in large part to its 413 lb-ft of torque. That's even more torque than is found in the range-topping M6 (a measly 383). Although horsepower is considerably lower at 272 vs. the 500 found in the M6, we expect the fuel mileage benefits to appeal to many with gas prices holding high. The 535d gets a combined 35.3 mpg on the British standard rating. The M6 manages just 12/18 on the EPA cycle. CAR anticipates that we'll hear more about the car later in the year. And as a sidenote, we know tuners like Hamman have already worked that mill up to 350 hp/487 lb-ft of torque, so this could get very interesting.

[Source: CAR Magazine]
BMW 6-series to get twin-turbo diesel originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 08:27:00 EST.
