Hyundai Equus - Click above for high-res image gallery

As part of its product and marketing development process, Hyundai has reached out to owners and enthusiasts to create a network of consumers with which to discuss everything from future models and technologies to advertising tactics, polls, and so on.

Autoblog has learned of a communiqué issued to members late last week where Dean Macko, Hyundai's Manager of Brand Strategy, appealed to focus group members to help come up with a name for a new "Advanced Technological System" - a telematics package likened repeatedly to General Motors' OnStar and Ford's Microsoft Sync.

According to Macko, the system Hyundai is pursuing focuses on "four buckets of service": Safety and Security (including theft immobilization and automatic emergency service notification in the event of a crash), Infotainment (wireless connectivity features for telephone, music, etc.), Navigation (like OnStar's turn-by-turn direction service), and Vehicle Diagnostics, a tool for both owners and dealers that could help track the need for maintenance and potentially even notify one's dealer to order parts for a forthcoming repair.

Macko admits Hyundai has come up with a number of possible names on its own, including In Touch, Ring, Fuse and Emerge, but the company is reaching out to its network for suggestions. Calling them "naming experts," Macko indicates that this focus group has already helped come up with titles for future paint colors.

To be clear, in Macko's video message, he only says that Hyundai is "thinking about" introducing such a system - he does not commit to a product, timetable, or price. However, given the tone of his message and the nature of the group that Macko is appealing to, we have to believe that this new technology is just around the corner... perhaps tied to the launch of the Equus luxury sedan?

Hyundai apparently needs these naming suggestions by this Wednesday, November 4, and while most of you probably aren't part of Hyundai's focus group, we know that top company officials trawl these hallowed precincts on a daily basis. Thus, if you have a suggestion of your own, why not drop it in 'Comments' - who knows, they just might pick yours. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

California joined thirty-two other states today when a new law banning unlimited cellphone use in automobiles went into effect at midnight. The new rules prohibit drivers from holding cellphones to their ears while talking, yet they are still allowed to dial the phone to place the call... and freely text message. While the law won't likely have a huge effect on many adult drivers who have become accustomed to using speaker-phones and hands-free devices such as Bluetooth-enabled earpieces (as if that really helps), it is the young drivers who face tough new rules. The law in the Golden State now bans drivers under the age of 18 from using any kind of mobile device while driving. All drivers face the same slap-on-the-wrist if caught. The first offense is only $20, with the fee bumped to $50 for additional convictions. Of course, that number will rapidly increase if other infractions or penalties are applied.

Audi's next-gen Multi-Media Interface (MMI) technology will debut in the new Audi Q5 compact crossover arriving later this year. Built by Harmon/Becker Automotive Systems, it is reportedly going to set benchmarks for automotive navigation, communication, and wide-screen entertainment. (We'll just pretend we've never heard that before.)

In any case, the system utilizes a high-performance NVIDIA(R) graphics processor for smooth map transitions, even while underway. Vehicle orientation is enhanced by a three-dimensional view with true-to-scale terrain, and photorealistic depictions of key landmarks. They've even gone so far (too far?) as to include commercial points of interest complete with brand logos for easier driver identification. The new MMI will include support for external USB storage media (iPod or MP3), satellite radio, and it contains an integral four-band GSM cell phone (SIM card ready) with Bluetooth connectivity. While we welcome a faster processor, let's hope the additional complexity comes with a simplified interface. Having spent hours futzing with the current-gen MMI, and the competition's COMAND and iDrive infotainment systems... we are crossing our fingers, but still reserving judgment until we actually use it.

Mazda intends to be a serious player in this burgeoning segment and will unveil the Mazda1 concept in Paris this fall, expected to look like the sketch above and influenced by the Nagare design language.

Mazda promises that the production vehicle will be more "radical" in production trim, though it likely won't carry fuel cells and batteries like the concept. The automaker does plan on offering amenities like navigation, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and the micro will have sliding doors and seats to make getting in and out easier. Mazda engineers are also working hard to make sure the Mazda1 is environmentally friendly, which means low emissions, small powertrains, and low weight. Fortunately, those very same attributes will also help keep costs down, which should help Mazda offer the vehicle everywhere from India and China to more developed regions like Europe and the US.

[Source: Auto Express]
Details on Mazda1 revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 May 2008 16:27:00 EST. Let's face it: most of us use Bluetooth-enabled phones, and as more manufacturers incorporate Bluetooth connectivity into their cars and trucks, GM's apparent lack of action on this front makes it look bad.

Consider the new CTS. It's a fantastic car that can be had with full iPod integration, the Gracenote database for your CDs, a 40GB in-dash hard drive, but not Bluetooth integration for your phone. It's a glaring omission in a car that otherwise uses technology to good effect. This applies almost everywhere -- Escalade, Malibu, Denali, you name it -- with the notable exception of the Cadillac STS. If you're not rolling in the CTS' big (and less appealing) brother, you either have to use a headset or the OnStar phone system. This is stupid. Thankfully, it's going to end.

In a reader Q&A session at the GM FYI Blog, Phil Colley of GM Performance Parts responded to a question about GM's dearth of in-car Bluetooth offerings, saying that the General will soon undertake the "broadest rollout of Bluetooth in the industry," with the technology appearing in 30 vehicles across the GM range by MY '09. So, if you want Bluetooth in your new Chevy, you still have to wait a little longer, but at least you know the General's going to get with the program soon enough.

[GM FYI Blog via The GM Source]
Finally! Not Ford, as its new Sync voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system can be optioned at a relatively low $395, or you can get it completely free with any Lincoln product. All up, Sync will be available in 12 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products this fall, and, it'll eventually spread to nearly all Blue Oval products within the next two years. Some high-spec Ford models such as the Ford Edge Limited or Ford Focus SES will also get Sync as standard.

For the $395 asking price, you get the ability to connect digital media players such as an iPod and Bluetooth cell phones to your car and control them with your voice or steering wheel mounted buttons. According to Ford's own research, up to 70% of new car buyers are looking for the ability to use such devices in their cars, and there's not much else out there that's as easy and convenient to use as the new Sync. Considering some luxury carmakers charge exorbitant rates for such technology or don't offer it at all, it's nice to see one of the domestics taking the lead and making it affordable for the average consumer.

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading Ford lets you Sync for just $395

Ford lets you Sync for just $395 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Aug 2007 13:28:00 EST.
Nissan's new 2008 Pathfinder hit dealerships yesterday, boasting a new design on the outside, more gadgets on the inside and more power under the hood.

MSRP on the '08 Pathfinder starts at $25,700 for the Pathfinder 4x2 S V6 and $27,700 for the Pathfinder 4x4 S V6, jumping up to $30,600 for the Pathfinder 4x2 SE V8 and $32,850 for the Pathfinder 4x4 SE V8.

All engines are mated to a standard 5-speed transmission, and Nissan's 5.6-iter V8 engine is tuned for more towing capacity with an additional 44 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque over the 4.0-liter DOHC V6. The truck shares its platform with the Titan and Armada.

For the technologically inclined, the Pathfinder comes with an optional navigation system and 9.3-gigabyte hard drive, dubbed the "Music Box," for MP3 storage, along with Bluetooth capability.

Unfortunately, that hasn't been possible during the tuning process of our new project car. Between the handheld control module, our cheap, serial-equipped laptop, the yet-to-be-mounted standalone ECU and the wire connected to our wide-band 02 sensor, the interior of our project is beginning to look like the rats nest behind our desk.

Innovate Motorsports seems to have the answer, with a new line of Bluetooth adapters, co-developed by BradaTech, that allows the entire Innovate line of wares to be connected wirelessly.

The suite of products can transfer information to laptops or Pocket PCs and have a range of up to 100 feet, expanding the possibilities of what we can do both inside and outside our ride. Now if we can just get that damn idle issue fixed, our world would be complete. Heads-Up Displays (HUD) have been around for eons, most effectively employed in aircraft, but with some automotive use, as well. But the system has pretty much been limited to high end models or a few GM models like the Corvette and Pontiac Grand Prix. Now a company is about to start offering HUD for the masses, via a little box that uses GPS and Bluetooth to calculate and display speed and speed warnings, as well as navigational directions. GlobalTop Technology, best known for its GPS systems, is introducing a GPS/Bluetooth HUD Speed Meter that will project that info onto your windshield.

No price or release date was reported, but the GlobalTop GPS HUD Speed Meter will be reviewed by the guys at DigitalReviews in April, and hopefully we'll get more info about it then. Sounds like a great idea if the price is low enough and the info is accurate. We'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the tip, Bill!

[Source: DigitalReviews.net via Devicepedia]
A HUD for all occassions: GlobalTop GPS & Bluetooth HUD Speedmeter originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 16:31:00 EST. Chinese toymaker Marsilli has come up with a fun way for us to amuse ourselves as we pass files back and forth. Their 512MB flash drive that doubles as an RC car comes with its own race track, though the first thing we'd try is zooming these little buggers around from room to room. They're controllable with your cellphone, though we're not sure if it's via Bluetooth or some other scheme. The USB port jutting out the back of the New Beetle is also just about the correct scale to match some of the inane drainage-pipe exhausts we've seen on clapped out rides around town, too. It's too bad we don't have an office pet, as we bet these zoomy little cars would do great on smooth surfaces and drive cats and dogs absolutely bonkers. We know we'd giggle like schoolgirls for a good half hour, maybe more. We're not sure where to find these in the US just yet, but we haven't looked terribly hard, either. We've been avoiding actually finding them because they're just what we need, more excuses to be unproductive while we hold out for that dream job of GranTurismo beta tester.

[Source: engadget.com]
Wacky USB remote-controlled car provides minutes of fun originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Jan 2007 19:32:00 EST. That company from Redmond developed a system called Sync that includes not only a hands-free Bluetooth wireless system for cell phones, but also an in-vehicle operating system. Hooking up your RAZR to your car is one thing, but talk of an in-car operating system implies that the Sync system will become much more robust in what it can do at some point. Talk in the industry points to functions like not only dumping you MP3 files on a car's hard drive, but also connecting your car's computer system to local area networks or even mobile broadband networks so that a driver can check his email on the fly.

Ford wil be debuting the Sync system at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas simultaneously in early January. The system will later be rolled out across Ford's entire lineup.

We're curious to see how far beyond communications the Sync system will go, so we'll report back with details when they're available. Now, you may begin joking about Microsoft crashing your car.

[Source: Automotive News]
Ford and Microsoft offering Sync connectivity in 2008 models originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Dec 2006 18:01:00 EST. And an iPod. Perfect stocking stuffers that when opened and the laser engraved Jaguar logo noticed, could lead your loved one to rush outside to see the real present in the driveway. What a cute image. If it shows up in a commercial, we want royalties.

Besides the customized looks on the phone and pod, the iPod even comes pre-loaded with Jaguar content including XKR: 90 Brand Film, XK "Attractive" TV commercial and a Jaguar history film. The phone and video/MP3 player are part of the new XJ Holiday Technology Package, which will be standard on all XJ sedans sold between November 13, 2006 and January 2, 2007.

Making the gift even better is the fact that the XJ features Jaguar's Audio Connectivity Module, which integrates the iPod seamlessly into the car's stereo. The now standard Bluetooth on all 2007 XJs will also allow most basic cell phone functions to be handled through the on-board vehicle controls. That includes the steering wheel buttons, audio system keypad or navi/info touchscreen.

[Source: Jaguar]
X-Mas XJ X-tras from Jaguar originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 18:57:00 EST. Reading, grooming, and even listening to MP3 players or iPods were on the list with significant support.

A few interesting results of the survey is that more Blackberry users favor government legislation banning their use behind the wheel than non-Blackberry users (65 to 58 percent, respectively), and 28 percent of the population says that even hands-free cell phone devices should be banned.

It's no surprise that a whopping 79 percent of people favor banning reading behind the wheel, 72 percent favor banning texting, and 68 percent favor banning grooming, but a surprising number of people are also all for banning eating, smoking and listening to iPods or MP3 players (36, 34 and 28 percent, respectively).

Thanks to Jamie for the tip.

[Source: Response Insurance via Yahoo! (IMS) has unveiled a new device called the iLane that enables a driver to access his/her email in a hands-and-eyes free way. The iLane is designed to handle all incoming information, including emails, phone calls and even text messages. The voice-based interface means that one can listen to, compose and forward emails just as if they were accessing an email account on a computer. The small device works by interacting with your Bluetooth-enabled phone or email device and can also route the audio into a vehicle's audio system or Bluetooth headset.

Though IMS bills the iLane as a way to safely access and manage emails on the go, undoubtedly people will question the safety of a device that encourages such activity while driving in the first place. Vehicles today, however, are moving ever closer to becoming fully functioning mobile offices, and how long will it be before Windows or Mac OSX are factory installed options? While we can personally wait until we're parked to check our email, the iLane might be helpful for that white-collar up-and-comer on the go. Though not yet available, the iLane is currently being shopped around by IMS to distributors and even automotive OEMs.

(Check out a full press release on the iLane after the jump and the iLane website here)

[Source: iLane]
Continue reading iLane first hands-and-eyes free email solution for driving

iLane first hands-and-eyes free email solution for driving originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Jul 2006 18:16:00 EST.
With Bluetooth hands-free phoning trickling all the way down to the options lists of inexpensive motors like the Nissan Versa, high-end car manufacturers are searching for new points of differentiation in the telephony wars.

BMW has taken the battle to the back seat, as rear seat hands-free will be an option on its 7-Series lineup in the not-too-distant future. The Peikar Acustic wireless phone will allow storage of 100 speed dial numbers.
