<br />
Yup, even your family, you Yankee wagon-hater you. Sadly, this is not only true, but we've known about it for some time. Americans, it seems, are so in love with all modes of transportation that are slightly raised up off the ground that we have no appetite for station wagons. Even sporty ones. So says <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>. Instead, we get the rather mutated looking <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/28/2010-bmw-550i-gran-turismo-review/">Gran Turismo</a>. Just sayin'. With that out of the way, allow us to introduce you to the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/5+series+touring">2011 BMW 5 Series Touring</a>, "Touring" being the preferred BMW nomenclature for station wagon and/or station wagon you can't have. <br />
<br />
We know, we're bitter and it shows. But listen to how BMW describes the 2011 5 Series Touring, "The new BMW 5 Series Touring is the perfect symbiosis of driving pleasure, efficiency, versatility and sporting elegance." We want that, right? After all, there's really nothing new here except the fact that it's a station wagon. One, we might add, that we can't have! Again, there's nothing really new here.<br />
<br />
At heart, we're talking about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/25/2011-bmw-5-series-first-drive/">new BMW F10 5 Series</a>, a car we like very much. And if you click through <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-5-series-touring-0/">the gallery of the new Touring</a>, you'll notice just how easy it is to fit your dog into the back of it. Well, not <em>your</em> dog, if you know what we're getting at. Once again,<em> *sigh.*</em> Full press release <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/10/officially-official-2011-bmw-5-series-touring-is-too-cool-for-a/#continued">after the jump</a>.<br />

<br />Autoblog road test editor Damon Lavrinc is in Spartanburg, South Carolina to drive BMW's new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/08/new-york-bmw-pulls-sheet-off-x6-m/">all-conquering X6M</a>, and in between bouts with the monster-motor'd crossover, he has had a chance to bend the ear of Martin Berkmann, manager of product planning for BMW North America, about another new capacious Bimmer - the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/2030061/">5 Series Gran Turismo</a>.<br /><br />Given the Bayern brand's increasingly crowded stable, it should come as no surprise that the boundary-blurring 5GT may result in the death of the sole 5 Series Sports Wagon model offered here in the States (a 530i model is shown). While the company's Touring variants carry a lot of water for BMW in other markets, the 535i xDrive SW makes up but a sliver of U.S. sales, and apparently BMW officials reckon the 5GT could just about extinguish what little demand there is.<br /><br />By our measure, that's something of a shame, as the 535i xDrive wagon is a nice package all the way around. Further, the 4,100-pound wagon's more compact form, coupled with what figures to be a lower center of gravity ought to make for significantly better handling than the 4,800-pound 5GT. That said, our man Lavrinc is about to get a bonus preview ride on the company's test track in the Gran Turismo, so perhaps we'll learn otherwise very soon.<br /><br />In any case, the official word hasn't come down yet, but judging by the fact that top officials are even willing to engage in discussions with us, this strikes us as a likely move.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-5-series-sports-wagon">2009 BMW 5 Series Sports Wagon</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-5-series-sports-wagon/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/bmw-5-touring-official-_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-5-series-sports-wagon/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/bmw-5-touring-official-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-5-series-sports-wagon/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/bmw-5-touring-official-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo">2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/5_gt_ab_gally20090522_49_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/5_gt_ab_gally20090522_48_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/5_gt_ab_gally20090522_44_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/5_gt_ab_gally20090522_42_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/official-bmw-5-series-granturismo/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/p90045867_imagea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/08/bmw-5-series-gran-turismo-may-write-epitaph-for-model/">BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo may write epitaph for range's wagon bodystyle in America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 08 Jul 2009 15:58:00 EST. <p>While BMW's 335i Touring has been spotted testing in the California Desert, don't expect to see the 300-hp five-door in showrooms anytime soon. BMW has again confirmed that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/04/19/official-bmw-3-series-touring-images/">328i Sports Wagon</a>, with its 230-hp powerplant and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, will be the most powerful 3 Series wagon in the States in the immediate future. We are not surprised, as this follows BMW's trend initiated when they launched the E46 3 Series Touring to the U.S. market in 2001. That model, like the current version, was never fitted with anything but the entry-level six-cylinder engine. Those who crave <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/09/bmw-wins-third-international-engine-of-the-year-award-in-a-row/">BMW's award-winning twin-turbo six-cylinder</a> under the hood of their family hauler can opt for BMW's 535xi Sports Wagon. The engine, and all-wheel drive, are standard.</p>
