If you're in the market for a high-performance BMW and you live in Europe, you've typically had two range of options at your disposal: you could go for one of BMW's own M models, or turn to Alpina. Though technically independent of BMW, Alpina is about as close to the manufacturer as a tuner can get, and many of its models are offered through BMW's own dealer network.
Alpina is hard at work on a new version of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Spy photographers spotted this machine out on public roads, and while the iconic Alpina wheels, reworked fascia and rear spoiler are the the most obvious tweaks to the long-nosed four-door, we're told the machine will also boast a 100-horsepower jump over the stock 650i Gran Coupe. There was no teasing and no build-up, just a "Boom!" and there appeared the Alpina XD3 Bi-Turbo. Said to be in response to customer demand, the XD3 Bi-Turbo uses the twin turbocharged, 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel from the BMW X3 xDrive35d. But where that engine in standard guise gets 313 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, Alpina ups the specs to 350 hp and 516 lb-ft. The result, through the eight-speed ZF transmission tuned for the application, is a 0-62 mile-per-hour run of 4.9 seconds.
Anyone that's spent some time behind the wheel of the Alpina B7 probably knows enough to understand what Americans are missing with this, newly launched Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo. We've got no lack of M models to choose from, it's true, but the Alpina touch offers a completely different driving character, with almost as much performance. A pity then that Alpina has no plans that we've heard of to bring this one across the pond.

Nice as it may be, the BMW 6 Series convertible doesn't really make our heart beat any faster. It's a soft, plush open-top tourer, and though the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 underhood certainly doesn't skimp on the power, it doesn't really make for an enthusiastic driving experience.
Alpina is adding a ragtop BMW 6-Series to its lineup of muscle-bound Bavarians. Set to debut in Frankfurt, the 2012 BMW Alpina B6 Biturbo Convertible should have enough muscle to hustle to 60 in just 4.8 seconds. The big droptop packs 507 hp and 516 lb. ft. of torque thanks to a twin-turbo V8.
