Hold on to your Budweiser coozies: Details are scarce at the moment, but Pickuptruck.com is reporting that Pontiac has quietly euthanized plans to introduce the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST. The muscular G8-based trucklet was to signal the re-emergence of the unibody pickup in North America, a genre once populated with vehicles like the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero, along with smaller front-drive moppets like the Volkswagen Rabbit pickup and Dodge Rampage.

The Austrailian-built rear-drive G8 ST was to arrive with V8 power, a 74-inch cargo hold, and a 3500-pound towing capacity, making it less capable than full-size body-on-frame pickups like General Motors' own Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, with the predicted trade-off of markedly better handling and fuel economy.

The ST was to launch as a 2010 model later this year, and prices were rumored to start in the low $30k range. Although we are unsurprised to learn of the truck's cancellation (as GM is actively slimming down its portfolio and the baby muscle pickup was expected to serve as a small-volume niche model), we can't help but get a little misty-eyed at the loss of what promised to be a truly epic donut-making machine. G8 ST, we hardly knew ye...

Two 2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Trucks were recently spied in Australia loaded on the back of a transporter. Although seemingly dipped in camouflage decals, the profile of this not-going-to-be-named-El-Camino is easily distinguishable, even without a clear shot of the obvious Pontiac grill. Previewed at the 2008 New York Auto Show, the G8-based Sport Truck will be powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 361 horsepower. It should scoot to 60 mph in just over five seconds. Those of us in North America can expect this cargo-bedded Aussie import to arrive on our shores in late 2009.

Sorry Pontiac, but who could've guessed that your big unveiling at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show would've been foiled by a simple webcam? We had our money on Car and Driver spilling the beans, but an eagle-eyed member of the G8board.com forum managed to grab these screen shots of the jumbotron erected in Pontiac's display at the Chicago Auto Show. The huge screen was running through its video of the Aussie-sourced, rear-wheel drive G8 sedan right in front of a webcam that is set up to capture images of the South Hall at McCormick Place. There are more than a few pics, most showing little bits here and there of this most highly anticipated Pontiac sedan... except for the one above, which shows the car in all its glory. Other pics, including one of the car's rear that show taillights creeping up onto the decklid, confirm that the G8 is a rebadged version of the Commodore SS-V wearing wheels from the ultra high-performance HSV GTS model.
