Bentley hasn't let much slip about the V8 that will be available in the 2011 Bentley Continental GT. However, each article that appears about Audi's use of the engine has one more little bit of information on it. According to what has been written we can piece together that it will be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 550 horsepower. Bentley, though, hasn't given any indication of power output yet, though the 550 number was mooted in reference to next year's RS7 Sportback. If that were true for a V8 Continental GT, it could be uncomfortably close to the base V12 output.

Regardless, the latest news has the V8 will reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent compared to the W12, listed as 396 g/km. Bentley said during the release of the second-gen Continental that the V8 would have "a class-leading CO2 emissions-to-power ratio," but even with that in mind, 40 percent is still a huge jump. Unless they're talking about simply piling on a huge amount of emissions equipment, there figures to be a serious rise in the Conti's EPA mileage rating, currently at 13 miles per gallon. It still wouldn't break 20 mpg, but it would be close closer, and not inconsequential.

2011 Audi R8 Spyder 5.2L V10 - click above for high-res image gallery

The Audi R8 Spyder was introduced at Frankfurt with a stonking V10 powertrain nestled snugly in its boot, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the righteous 525-horsepower mill will be the R8 droptop's only source of power. Our West Coast friends at Inside LIne insist that the more reasonable 4.2-liter V8 that powers the "base" R8 is going to be offered as well... eventually.

The availability of a V8-powered Spyder could drop the price of entry by $30,000 or more, and it could prove to be an attractive option to potential customers who are more interested in the R8 Spyder as a fashion statement than as a near-supercar with outstanding performance. IL estimates that a V8-powered, topless R8 could arrive in showrooms sometime next year.

Who knows, perhaps Audi will find it in its collective heart to utilize the updated, better-breathing 450-hp 4.2-liter that is scheduled to arrive under the bonnet of the RS5 - not a bad consolation prize for a luxury car buyer looking to become part of the 500 Horsepower Club.
However, Audi is actively considering keeping the FSI V8 into the 2011 model year and possibly beyond.

According to our sources inside Audi, the reason for the decision is the 4.2-liter's continued popularity, both with enthusiasts and everyday consumers who enjoy its output and entertaining audio. If Audi decides to keep the V8 around, expect it to be used primarily in the S5 coupe, with the S5 cabrio using the all-new supercharged six.

Audi 4.2-liter V8 could continue in S5 through 2011 and beyond originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 14:03:00 EST. Apparently, the firm is working on a new model said to be "less powerful, more relaxed, and less track-oriented." The brief mention is in the March 21 issue of Autocar, and quotes Apollo builder Francois Sittler. No details about whether the car will be based on the current Apollo or not. We're sure we'll get more details before the car shows up three years from now.

For those who might not recognize the name, Roland Gumpert was a big part of Audi's Motorsport department in the '70s and '80s. That was the period during which Audi managed to snag four World Rally Championships with its awesome Quattros. The company that bears his name, Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH, uses Audi mechanicals to power race-type supercars developed with help from the Audi supertuner MTM's Roland Mayer. The griffin-badged Gumpert Apollo started production in late 2005 and was joined by the "Sport" edition at Geneva. Both feature Audi's 4.2-liter V8 but with twin-turbos boosting horsepower to around 800. Price on the Sport starts around $400,000.

[Source: Autocar via Winding Road]
Gumpert looking to build a new model: More luxury, less power originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 09:26:00 EST.
