We've learned to take "scoops" from Auto Express with a grain of salt. But Britain's car tabloid says they have it on good authority that Audi is working on an even more extreme successor to the current range-topping R8 supercar.

Dubbed the R10, the heart of the new four-ringed exotic is listed as a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V10 mounted amidship and pumping out 600 horsepower - through all four wheels, natch. The platform is tipped to be shared with sister company Lamborghini's upcoming replacement for the aging Murcielago, crafted from aluminum and supplemented with carbon fiber.

While such a performance beast would encroach on Lamborghini's territory and, from the sound of it, even approach Bugatti's, the Volkswagen empire has proven particularly adept at packing segments with its own products, so anything's possible. AE says prototypes are already lapping the Nurburgring and could be ready for delivery by 2012.

With the 12 hours of Sebring right around the corner, all eyes are fixed on the 2009 ALMS season. The ultimate primer to ALMS, Audi's ground-breaking Truth in 24, airs on ESPN tomorrow at 8 pm EST and now we have the ultimate primer to the ALMS primer that is Truth in 24; a ten-minute interview with the NFL Flims team that made the documentary. We know ten minutes is a lifetime in the web world, but Garage419 makes it worth your time with some good interviews and even better b-roll straight from the documentary. Also, if you haven't read the Alex Nunez review of Truth in 24, you can do so here.
Continue reading VIDEO: Garage419 previews Truth In 24

VIDEO: Garage419 previews Truth In 24 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 19:32:00 EST. Audi has dominated the annual event since 2006 with its revolutionary, diesel powered R10. Truth in 24 (Autoblog review here) is the story of the 2008 race as seen from the pits of team Audi. The four-ringed automaker commissioned the visual masters at NFL Films to produce the documentary, and the resulting film is a must-see for anyone even remotely interested in racing.

ESPN is airing the brilliant documentary on Friday, March 20 as a kickoff to the ALMS season. The Friday airing of Truth in 24 is the perfect precursor to the world racing debut of Audi's new R15 at the 12 Hours of Sebring the next day. This documentary has fast become one of the best racing films of all time, and it's definitely worth your time. Thanks for the tip, Horst!

Gallery: Audi R15 TDI - studio images

[Source: Truth in 24]
Catch Truth in 24 this Friday on ESPN originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Mar 2009 17:07:00 EST. So far, it looks like the 24 Hours of Le Mans has managed to remain relatively immune as the Automobile Club de l'Ouest received 82 entries for the 55 openings for this years race. The top LMP1 class is set to be another battle royal with 12 factory supported entries from Audi, Peugeot and Aston Martin. Peugeot will be trying to finally win Le Mans and has increased its squad to four by entrusting one of the 908s to the Pescarolo Sport team. Audi will have three of its new R15 TDIs and two of the old R10s which will be run by the Kolles team.

In the P2 field, a trio of Porsche RS Spyders with will be leading the way along with an assortment of Lolas, Zytek and Radical prototypes. In GT1, the factory Chevrolet Corvette C6R will make its final trip to Le Mans before being replaced by a new GT2 car. The GT1 field will be filled out with pairs of private Chevys, Aston Martins and Lamborghinis. Finally, the GT2 class is mostly Ferrari F430s with a few Porsches, and an Aston Martin and a Spyker. The festivities get under way on June 10. Check out the full entry list here.

[Source: LeMans.org]
24 Hours of Le Mans invite list released originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 12:59:00 EST.
The self proclaimed leader in "green racing", the American Le Mans Series, will be losing one of its premier teams for 2009. After winning nine consecutive LMP1 championships with the R8 and then the R10 TDI, Audi will no longer have a works team in the ALMS in 2009. The only official Audi appearance in North America will be the debut run of the new R15 TDI at Sebring in March. After that, the R15 will go to Le Mans and Audi will be represented by the new A4 in DTM and the R8 LMS in GT3 racing.

Audi hasn't indicated whether it will make the R10s available to Champion Racing or any other team. Champion has been operating the Audi Sport North America program for several years. The current economic conditions have been cited by Audi racing boss Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich as part of the reason for withdrawing from ALMS and also the European Le Mans Series.

Gallery: Detroit Sports Car Challenge 08

Photos Copyright (C)2008 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading BREAKING: Audi withdraws from 2009 American Le Mans Series

BREAKING: Audi withdraws from 2009 American Le Mans Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 06:00:00 EST.
Pirro piloting the Audi R10 TDI at the Detroit Sportscar Challenge

After 15 years of hustling factory Audi race cars around tracks the world over, Emanuele Pirro will have his last run in the R10 TDI this weekend at the American Le Mans Series' final race at Laguna Seca. The Italian driver first hooked up with Audi in 1994 running in the Italian and German Touring Car Championships where he won titles three years in a row. Later he moved over into sports cars where he has spent the last decade driving the R8 and R10 TDI. Over that span, he and his teammates have conquered the 24 hours of Le Mans five times including the first victory by a diesel-powered car in the 2006 R10. Pirro's most recent victory came just two weeks ago at the Petit Le Mans where he teamed with Alan McNish and Dindo Capello to storm back from two laps down to defeat the Peugeot 908 HDi. Pirro is also an avid pilot, so he'll probably be getting more of his thrills in the air now.

It's not known if Pirro is retiring completely from competition or just leaving his team, but he will continue to be a brand ambassador for Audi, a task at which he should excel. Having met the man on several occasions, I can say first hand that he is very warm, friendly and personable and almost always has a big smile on his face.

Gallery: Detroit Sports Car Challenge 08

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi R10 driver Emanuele Pirro stepping down after 15 years

Audi R10 driver Emanuele Pirro stepping down after 15 years originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Oct 2008 12:57:00 EST.
It was a record setting day yesterday at Road Atlanta, with all four classes setting qualifying records including a blistering 1:06.242 by Stephane Sarrazin in his Peugeot 908 HDi to take the top overall spot. Peugeot has continually proved that it has a fast car, taking the last two pole positions at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it was Audi on top at the end of that race. Allan McNish will be putting plenty of pressure on the Peugeot team, who qualified just .085 seconds behind the Peugeot in his Audi R10 TDI. In P2, Penske racing not only captured pole with a record qualifying time of 1:07.061, but also grabbed the top three spots. It was all Corvette Racing in GT1, but it will be a close race between the two Corvette who were separated by only .047 seconds. Finally, Risi Competizione qualified first in GT2 for the second straight year.

Coverage of the event starts today at 11:00 AM EST on SPEED TV today, with the green flag waving at 11:15. A NASCAR race splits up the coverage from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. EST, but you can still watch the race on AmericanLeMans.com (as well as look up live timing and scoring) or listen in on XM channel 166. Full details of the qualifying and driver quotes can be found in the press release after the jump.

If Audi was a greater beneficiary of the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" adage, they would have trounced Mercedes and BMW in sales long ago. The house of the four rings took the 24 Hours of Le Mans, then they claimed the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), and now Audi extends its arms once again to grab the European Le Mans Series championship (LMS) trophy.

In fact, by finishing first and fourth at Silverstone with two Audi R10s, Audi takes the driver's title (Alex Prémat and Mike Rockenfeller), the manufacturer's title, and the team title. It's only real competition was Peugeot, which walks away empty handed even though it won four of the five LMS races, had two cars on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and had pole position for every race. Next year's battle for Franco-German supremacy should be even better. Make the jump for Audi's press release.

Gallery: Audi at 2008 Le Mans

Continue reading Audi wins everything... add European Le Mans Series to the list

Audi wins everything... add European Le Mans Series to the list originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 19:58:00 EST.
Them's fightin' words, but when we're talking about a V10-powered version of the Audi R8, you'd better be taking them seriously. According to an Audi insider as reported by Auto Motor und Sport in Sweden, the more powerful R8 will set a new lap record for a production car at the Nurburgring. That would mean coming in under the 7:26 lap time claimed by the Corvette ZR1 (and taken by the Pagani Zonda F), and faster than the Nissan GT-R's 7:29, but the big question remains whether it could out-gun the GT-R V-Spec's purported 7:25.

The R8 V10 - with whatever name it will adopt - is expected to make its production-guise debut at the Paris Motor Show this coming October. That'll make for some delicious eye-candy, but the real treat will be to see how the German supercar holds up against the Americans and the Japanese on the 'Ring.

The Audi R10 is a proven race machine, both durable and fast, but the Peugeot 908 has often times proved faster. Late yesterday at the first qualifying session for the endurance race, the 908 proved to be the fastest by far when it shattered the lap record at Le Mans by 7.8 seconds! The car was being driven by French driver Stephane Sarrazin, who man-handled the 908 around the track in 3 minutes and 18.513 seconds. A truly amazing feat, though what's more incredible is that the next five fastest times also beat the previous lap record, two of which were Audi R10s. Unfortunately, the second and third fastest times behind the fastest Peugeot 908 were two more Peugeot 908s. The Peugeot cars are clearly faster than the Audis so far in qualifying, but that was the case last year and Audi pulled out a win just like it has the past four years in a row. Unlike the Le Mans Series races where Peugeot has won the first three races so far this year, Le Mans is about endurance and Audi has proven seven out of the last eight years that it can last longer than the rest.

[Source: Reuters, Photo by Ker Robertson/Getty]
Peugeot destroys Le Mans lap record in qualifying originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 19:31:00 EST. In the world of alternative power, not all fuels are created equal. This fact is true with ethanol, where the alcohol can be made using fairly inefficient processes, some of which involve corn, or using more advanced cellulosic methods which do not use a foodstock. Diesel too can come from either petroleum or from non-dino sources. You're probably aware that Audi has been assaulting various race tracks using its advanced diesel powered race cars, specifically its two-time Le Mans-winning R10 TDI, which has so far been running on what is known as gas-to-liquid (GTL) diesel fuel. With the 24 Hours of Le Mans just around the corner, Audi and Shell, the fuel provider for Audi's race team, have announced that the team will be blending a small amount of biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel into its secret mixture. Shell's BTL fuel is made from materials such as wood chips and will make its on-track debut on Sunday, June 1, as Audi's R10 TDI begins its official Le Mans testing.

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi R10 TDI using biofuel for the first time

Audi R10 TDI using biofuel for the first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 May 2008 15:17:00 EST. But today, we received the most definitive proof yet; engine-bay shots and a video of a white prototype shot in Florida. According to members of AudiWorld, a few V10 mules have been handed out to current, and supposedly trustworthy, R8 owners for evaluation, sporting oval exhaust pipes and a revised fascia. While that's a rather unconventional move on Audi's part, it's proof that the automaker is getting ready to launch the new RS8 (or R10) in the near future.

Hit the jump to hear the V10-powered R8 stretching its legs.

Gallery: Spy Shots: V10 Audi R8

[Source: AudiWorld via German Car Scene]
Continue reading VIDEO: God's ringtone is a V10-powered Audi R8

VIDEO: God's ringtone is a V10-powered Audi R8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 May 2008 15:31:00 EST. From a manufacturing standpoint, both automakers could benefit from shared development and production costs, while consumers would get their hands on some very compelling product.

The cornerstone of Audi's confusing salvo to "put old luxury on notice" is the expansion of its lineup to fill every conceivable niche. The extension of the "R" line of products - beginning with the R8 - is rumored to include a convertible version of Audi's midship V8 super coupe, along with an R4, R6 and an R10.

Details on the R6, which could slot in between Porsche's Cayman/Boxster and 911 range, and the R10 are scarce, but the next generation Boxster will share a platform with Audi, allowing the four-ringed crew to offer a midship coupe of its own. The R4 is expected to sport the TT's 2.0-liter TFSI four producing 268 hp or a 2.5-liter five-cylinder making upwards of 300 hp. Porsche and Audi are also likely to share everything from aluminum space frames to high-output diesels, torque-vectoring AWD systems and dual-clutch transmissions.

The only concern is how this massive amount of cross-pollination between brands could affect the sales of both automakers. Choice is good, but only if the market can sustain the amount of product being offered.

[Source: EGMCarTech]
Rendered Speculation: Audi R4 coupe in the works? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 16:45:00 EST. It is well known that Audi holds extreme displeasure for ALMS regulation changes involving weight that were aimed at keeping the LMP1 vehicles like the R10 in close running with the less powerful LMP2 vehicles. Audi believes that the adjustments went too far, as the Penske Porsche RS Sypders won 8 out of 12 races in the 2007 season. For 2008, a 50 kg (110 lb) weight penalty will be imposed on the LMP2 cars for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, and Audi hopes to see IMSA implement the same weight penalty before it decides it will return to ALMS. When asked, Audi would also not go into detail on whether they would accept the rumored compromise of a 25 kg (55 lb) weight penalty. Come on, IMSA. The ALMS without Audi is a lot less attractive.

[Source: Autoweek]
Audi may still not compete in ALMS next year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 18:32:00 EST. Both the diesel-powered R8 and R10 TDI LMP1 race cars have dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series, while Audi A4-based race cars have also been champions in DTM racing. For 2008, Audi is going whole hog into motorsports, investing more money and cars into these two successful series. Audi will be going for its sixth victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June with three R10 race cars, and in addition to entering another two R10 TDIs in the American Le Mans Series, it will also field a pair in the Le Mans Series in Europe. Aside from the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, this will be the first time the Audi R10 TDI and Peugeot 908 HDi, both powered by diesel engines, square off on a regular basis. Lucas Luhr, who previously could be found driving in the DTM series, will also make the switch to the Audi R10 TDI in the Le Mans Series.

While we spent the entire last season of the American Le Mans Series watching the Audi R10 TDI duke it out with the entire LMP2 field, the Le Mans Series in Europe featuring Audi versus Peugeot will be where the best racing can be had. Too bad SPEED hardly shows anything but NASCAR now.

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi entering European Le Mans Series in 2008

Audi entering European Le Mans Series in 2008 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 15:56:00 EST.

At last year's SEMA show, one of our favorite booths by far was the one from Michelin, which brought together the world's fastest supercars for one massive display of speed. We eagerly anticipated what they had in store for us this year, and we headed straight for it. It would have been virtually impossible for Michelin to top itself, but they sure made a stab at it. While last year focused on production cars, the display this year was broadened to feature tuner cars as well as race cars. Taking the unique approach of having a production model, tuner version and race car from three prominent manufacturers, Michelin showed us that they build a tire for all sectors of the automotive kingdom. While we were particularly fond of the Audi R8 by APR, there was also a Champion Motorsport F77 Turbo and out back a Lingenfelter Corvette sporting 1,100 HP. Race cars included the R10 from Audi, an RS Spyder from Porsche, and a Corvette C6.R as well. While a production R8 and GT3 RS represented the stock crowd for the German marques, the Corvette slot was left suspiciously vacant, perhaps giving us a preview of what shoes the ZR1 might be donning for its debut. Nice follow-up, Michelin.

For the last race of the ALMS season at Laguna Seca, the P1, P2, and GT1 championships had already been wrapped up since Petit Le Mans. Still, the Audi team was out to better the Penske camp for the second race in a row after a close victory at Petit Le Mans. GT2 was the most exciting class, with the driver, team, and manufacturer championships all up for grabs. Risi Competizione came in as a heavy favorite, needing only to finish 70 percent of the race to clinch the team title.

The two diesel-powered Audi R10 LMP1 cars have been saddled with restrictions by the ALMS organizing body to keep the season competitive, and pesky Porsche RS Spyders from Penske Racing in the LMP2 class have been beating the Audis consistently all year long. That ended last Saturday in a fitting way at the 10th Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, though it wasn't easy.

Dindo Capello piloted his R10 across the finish line after 1,000 miles of racing just 0.923 seconds ahead of Penske Racing's Romain Dumas in his Porsche RS Spyder. Dumas had a 30-second lead over Capello with a half hour left of racing to go, but a caution period allowed the Audi to work its way up through lap traffic after falling behind. Once behind Dumas, it reportedly took Capello eight minutes to pass him with 15 laps to go. With the win, Capello and co-driver Allan McNish also secured their second straight LMP1 drivers championship, and Audi earned the distinction of sweeping the three big enduro events of the year: Sebring, Le Mans and the Petit Le Mans.

Follow the jump for results of the top ten finishing cars and check out the gallery below for pics from the race courtesy of Audi.

[Source: Americanlemans.com]

Gallery: 2007 Petit Le Mans

Continue reading Petit LeMans ends in Audi's favor

Petit LeMans ends in Audi's favor originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 14:31:00 EST. The No. 7 R10 won the LMP1 class during last weekend's 9th Round of the American LeMans Series race at Mosport. With the win, Audi has clinched the LMP1 championship with three races left to run. Unfortunately, Audi has yet again failed to claim an outright win despite dominating the entire race ahead of those pesky LMP2 cars.

The Audi driven by Alan McNish had inherited the lead late in the race when Timo Bernhard pitted his LMPS Penske Motorsports Porsche RS Spyder. Things were going well, with the McNish building a comfortable 22-second lead. Unfortunately, the R10 then experienced some kind of gearbox malfunction with ten minutes to go that left McNish with only the higher gears. Every tight corner of the track gave Bernhard another opportunity to close the gap. Bernhard caught McNish with about five minutes left to go, and went on to build a 19.575-second lead.

Check out the rest of our recap and VIDEO of the last five minutes of last weekend's race at Mosport after the jump, courtesy of SPEED.

[Source: ALMS]
Continue reading Audi R10s lose a heartbreaker in Mosport

Audi R10s lose a heartbreaker in Mosport originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 17:31:00 EST.
