Among Bryant's hard stance anti-racer policies was a law that gave the police the right to crush any car that was modified for racing - even if the vehicle had no complaints against it. If a report from The New York Times is true, Mr. Bryant could ironically spend the rest of his life behind bars for a brutal hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist.

The incident reportedly began as a minor event and quickly escalated. Bryant allegedly brushed the bicyclist while he was driving, who then held on to the driver's side door of his black Saab convertible. Witnesses told a local Canadian television station that Bryant was heard swearing and swerving in an apparent attempt to shake the biker from his door. Bystanders told police that Bryant was driving on the sidewalk near lamp posts at a high rate of speed, in an apparent attempt to knock the biker off.

The incident ended with the bicyclist, Darcy Allen Sheppard, striking a mailbox. Sheppard later died due to injuries sustained from the accident. According to the NYT, Bryant went to a nearby hotel after the incident where he was later arrested for what appears to be a most heinous hit-and-run incident. It looks like Bryant was right when he said that cars could be as dangerous as explosives...
The hope is that seeing their expensive toys flattened by a compress will deter street racers from endangering the lives of others on public roads. Judging from the news coming out of Canada, it appears that the province of Ontario is prepared to go one step further. Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant has stated that the authorities in his province will confiscate and crush vehicles built for street racing before they even put rubber to pavement on city streets.

"Just on the balance of probabilities if we can establish that a car is being used for the unlawful purpose of street racing, we will seize it and you will never see it again. We will crush your car, we will crush the parts."

The report from The Star in Ontario tells us that Bryant's fiery edict was given just a few days after a truck driver was killed after being cut off by three youths street racing on Highway 400. The driver, David Virgoe, drove his truck off the road and down an embankment rather than cross the divider and risk colliding with oncoming traffic.

More after the jump.

[Source: The Star]
Continue reading Ontario threatens to crush street racing cars before they hit the street

Ontario threatens to crush street racing cars before they hit the street originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 14:26:00 EST. An article in the newspaper points a finger at Attorney General Bill Lockyer, the man leading the filing. The OCR slights the suit as a political move in Lockyer's election bid for state treasurer next month. The article cites studies that show U.S. gasoline use accounts for only 1.5-percent of greenhouse pollution, hardly enough to affect the environment worldwide. The Register concludes that 'rational consumers' have already taken gas prices into account, and are migrating to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Related:
Hybrid sales inelastic despite surging gas prices
SUV buyers waiting, not abandoning their beasts of burden

[Source: Orange County Register via Desert Dispatch]
Ten state lawsuit just another political ploy? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 May 2006 09:05:00 EST.
